Is RUSH reuniting?

- With the upcoming release of Geddy Lee's biography "My Effin Life," speculation has heated up that both he and Alex Lifeson may reunite as Rush, following their brief appearances at the South Park 25th Anniversary Concert and the Taylor Hawkins memorial concerts in London and Los Angeles where Dave Grohl, Chad Smith, Omar Hakim, and Danny Carey filled the spot for the late, great Neil Peart. Let's discuss.

no matter what without neil it will never be rush
I would love to see the two of them get another guitar player get a drummer and make another album. adding another guitar player so it just not replacing neil. go on tour play 5-6 old songs a few covers one song of alex and geddy solo album and the new album. you cant just replace neil just like you cant replace eddie VH@@zippydooda
yes i know that but i just would love to see them move in a different direction then just getting another drummer to replace neil@@zippydooda
Not "the same" Rush...but technically Rush was Rush even before Neil joined...And while they will never be that same Rush they were with Neil, they can continue to put out amazing music as Rush with Alex and Geddy.
I know what you mean because Neil had such a major impact in the band. Dare I say why they've been successful for so long. If no Neil they would've been done much earlier or keep playing for just being a Canadian local band
As Geddy writes in his memoir, Neil limited the run because he wanted to be a father to his young daughter. He also explained that Neil was at the very top of his game on that tour - notwithstanding the great difficulties he had with fungal feet infections for the second half of it.
Neil's other reason for retiring from music was a reasonable concern that he would not be able to play at his best going forward, which was what Alex was getting at. We also know this thanks to Neil's travel memoir covering the same period.
Geddy said its not rush if it's not the three of them
Geddy and Alex should go on tour with Rodger Hodgson and play easy listening songs and a few Rush covers.
There's a parallel here to the Jimmy Page and Robert Plant tours in the 1990s. I saw one of those shows, and although it wasn't billed as Led Zeppelin, the show was mostly Led Zeppelin songs, reworked a bit.
If Lee and Lifeson wanted to tour, I'd be happy to see it, and of course the expectation would be that they would play a lot of Rush music. What I wouldn't expect from any new incarnation is new music, recorded and released under the Rush name. Neil was such a huge part of their songwriting that any new music should be under a different name.
But as someone else said, it's their effin' band. Not mine. They can do what they want. Or nothing, they have earned a rest.
I've been lucky enough to see Rush live twice in my life. When I was a teenager, to see them live was a dream, something that I thought would never happen. But boy, it was worth it! While Neil Peart is such a crucial part of the band, humankind don't deserve to be without Rush music. Maybe there will never be new music as it used to be without Neil's brilliant lyrics. But I'd be happy with the same old songs being played over and over and over. I would go to as many shows as I could, just to see Alex and Geddy. And drums... well, there are many drummers who are Neil's "apprentices", who would do a great job filling up for Neil. Never the same, sure. The shoes are too big to fill. But guys like Mike Portnoy would make Neil proud.
So, please, even if you change your name to "2/3rds of Rush", please, keep playing!!!
In my humble opinion I don't believe they should tour again as Rush without Neil. Sure there are drummers out there that can play the notes, but there isn't anyone that has the chemistry with Geddy and Alex not to mention the emotional attachment to the music, Neil wrote the songs from the heart and from his and their life experiences. There isn't another person alive that could ever recapture the chemistry, emotion and atmosphere of those three playing together. 🥰🥁🎸🎹🇨🇦
No one will ever be Neil Peart. No one. Even taking off the Nostalgia Goggles and being as objective as possible, there's just no replacing that chemistry.
That said, I'd support Alex and Ged doing whatever they want, because who or what the band is, isn't up to us. It's their fuckin' band.
I respectfully submit that Brann Dailor from Mastodon would also be a great fit. Huge Rushie, great guy.
they could also just do a short acoustic tour ..that has been thrown around
@@timsears951 I wouldn't hate that. Not one bit.
@@CrashPK77 that would work too
I think Rush feat. (drummer name) would be fine, Personally i'd love a 6 piece live Rush with Geddy, Alex, drummer, percussionist, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist.
Just to be sure, it's not accurate to suggest that Alex and Geddy "finally" got together to jam last year. They're close friends who live in the same city. They see each other frequently. They just didn't jam together in the wake of Neil's death.
If you have never seen Rush live before guess what you'll never see Rush Live ever even if they get 50 million different drummers to play with them because Neil Peart is was and always will be Rush anything and Anyone else is just a Tribute band period i'm glad i got to see them live with Neil cause nothing will be the same without him and nothing i mean nothing no matter whoever they get behind the kit will never ever be close to Rush
A true bummer I missed the R40 tour!
@@LoganCrosland Last show I seen was Clockwork Angels, took my son- our first RUSH show together he was blown away- Rush is one of the only bands to create generational fans.
@@Mike-jv4rz what an awesome experience, and 100% agreed!
Neil Peart is irreplaceable. But there are drummers that can certainly pay homage to the professor . I would 100% go see them with a few guest drummers. Even if they decided to fly under the Rush banner. Alex and Geddy were in Rush before Neil came in. So they have every right to play under their own name. Will it be the same? No. Never. But I would certainly pay to see it.
@@Wargasm54 Agreed- why not....
There is not a single Drummer on the planet that I will pay to watch with Rush if his name is not Neil Peart.
Saw them 9 different tours .
Almost certainly. The book tour then the concert tour . That said it will never be the same
The important thing is if they make new and good music. Rush already knows that there will be no better band. Never!
Carl Palmer could fit right in.
For me, Gavin Harrison is intellectually and technically the optimal choice as a new drummer. Another alternative would be Marco Minnemann.
I vote for Danny. Immensely capable. We can debate ad infinitum whether they should or shouldn't use the Rush name and both sides will have worthwhile arguments for and against but we have a limited amount of time that people of Alex and Geddy's generation will be ready, willing, and able to perform and for me as long as they are able and willing to play we should be ready to be there in attendance to support that endeavor and introduce them to a wider audience, whatever they wish to call it.
very , vely interesting
Geddy’s voice is gone. He cant hit the notes and with no Neil, we have to let them go. It was great! I am the biggest Rush fan, but this has to stop. Let them be….
Yep. Geddy should have hung it up long ago when he lost his voice.... it was long before they lost Neil. He just can't let it go. Can't blame him. It was his entire life and that's not easy to let go. Maybe tune down a few steps.
If they do anything it will be them doing something different and playing music and that's fine but don't ever create music call it Rush without Peart!! I don't believe they would do that...
Call it the Dirk N Lerxt show, or Rash even, or Exit Stage Left, we will all still show up. I think that Portnoy will be too busy for the next 2 years. How about Bozzio? Mangini may be busy too with his new album, but we shall see.
I'm one of those so called "rare female fans". I've been a fan since 1980, and I saw them 37 times. Rush has been my favorite band for almost 40 years now, and as much as I miss them no.... I hope they don't " reunite" as Rush. Without Neil for me, it wouldn't be the same.
A tribute to Neil and Rush by Geddy and Alex would be nice but please don’t call it Rush.
he suffered from carpi tunnel the last tour neil suffered tremendously but pushed threw it for the music/fans
You won't see Rush live now too. Rush without Peart is not Rush.
Agreed 100%
Sorry, I seen them without Peart and they were a kick ass band, and if they want to get a 3rd drummer I would be in there for it too.
Hopefully not. Rush doesn't exist without Neil Peart.
It's not going to happen. Neil wouldn't have wanted it. Rush retired with grace and diginity by not going on Kiss retirement teaser tours just to
milk more money out of the fans. I would rather see more solo albums from them as they have a wealth of talent to work with by performers
who will glady step in as a badge of honor. Alex and Geddy are 70 now, I don't think they would be up for lenghty tours for months at a time anymore.
They have done their tour of duty in rock. They don't ever need to prove anything to anybody.
Stewart Copland
Maybe with a new name like ,Rushed would be ok.
This is always the dumbest debate. We live in a temporary world. I’d they want to play as Rush they should. It’s not a big deal.
Dont do it his voice is gone
Love Dave Grohl, but he could never fill Neal’s shoes.
Dave has even gone on record of saying that.
I think it would be fine for them to tour as Rush, as they did without Peart in the beginning. Rush would of been a big band if Rutsey stayed, not the same band, yet they would of been a big band. I also come from that generation that when introduced to them, via Working Man and In the Mood when they first came out, it was without Peart. No dis respect to Peart or his legacy or work he did for them and how he changed them. I was lucky enough to see the original Rush live and the Peart version and if Geddy and Alex want to go out again, I will there to see the 3rd version of the band.
Mike Portnoy, Tim Alexander, I would also throw Bobby Jarzombek in there.
Bobby Jarzombek is incredibly underrated. Saw him with Bach a few times; still haven't seen him crush with George Strait yet haha. I almost went to a Fates Warning show awhile back and I believe he was playing with them at the time as well.
I say Portnoy, he befriended Neil and visited him a few times to play, Neil showed Portnoys son some things on the drums on one visit. But he JUST rejoined the Dream.😮
Please! Dont come back as Rush...if they wanna tour thats great! Just dont call it Rush..because it cant be Rush without Neil ,how bout calling it Geddy and Alex OF Rush?
I cant believe these guys are board all ready . yall need to find something else to do . yes i know an other tour sounds great from a fan pov . but i think yall should go and enjoy life and all it has to offer you . just my opinion
Touring and making music IS what they do to enjoy life.
I’ve seen RUSH 30 times… there’s no replacing Neil, but… if Geddy and Alex want to tour, they should use a variety of drummers. That would be the best way to pay tribute. And… let each drummer bring their own style to the songs rather than trying to do an exact technical reproduction of Neil’s playing.
Great idea
Somebody once suggested Alex Van Halen join Rush. I'd give it a listen
Terrible suggestion
AVH, it’s even a choice. Rush music is completely different than what VH played. How many songs can you remake so people will listen to you??
Well geddy can't really sing anymore and the drummers dead, so....
Get a no name like Journey did to replace the singer In this case the drummer, so the other two shine.
