Knowing that Geddy knew during this interview that Neil was sick is heartbreaking. He and Alex honored Neil and his well-deserved privacy for 3.5 years, all the while knowing he was in failing health.
You beat me to it. I've said more or less the same.
I thought the same :/ heartbreaking
This is exactly what I was thinking and why I wanted to come here.
Tight knit band/family!! Respect to Geddy and Alex for allowing Neil to his privacy!!
Based on the latest news, by this point in time in early 2019 Neil was already confined to a wheelchair and had limited speech. So Geddy is keeping the most awful and painful secret to himself here. The loyalty that Geddy and Alex showed to their colleague and friend is astonishing, and heartbreaking.
"Neil is retired and he's living his life." That line hits so differently now. Kudos to Geddy for being a class act and protecting his friend's privacy. RIP Neil.
I wonder if they knew Neil was dying at that point or not
@@jeffkahl yeah, I would imagine they did. It's likely the reason they stopped touring/retired when they did.
What Geddy couldn't tell us at this time is that Neil was secretly battling a terminal illness. He knew Neil's life was coming to an end. So sad.
I remember seeing this just after it came out and wondered, at the time, about the change in Geddy's tone as he spoke about Neil. It's just so sad.
It all must have been excruciating, and torturous for Geddy!
Well, it's possible that everyone was still seriously holding out hope that he would beat the cancer at this point. That's usually how it goes with cancer. Especially when death is still a year or more away..
@@patrickmcleod111 Glioblastoma is 100% fatal. There is no cure. His death was an absolute certainty. There was no hope. It is always terminal.
@@neilpeartspurplenose8739 - I know someone who fully survived Glioblastoma. I realize how insanely rare that is, and they will be on special meds for their entire life. But they are about 5 years in and living a full life.
Geddy knew in this moment that they would never play together again. He most likely knew that Neil was battling cancer. They were very successful in protecting Neil’s privacy during the last few years.
Thank you Geddy, Alex and Neil for giving us fans so many years of wonderful music and touring the world.
100% spot on... has been a lifetime of joy for me.
Stank Nugget well this comment sure didn’t age well. Feel better about yourself? He was dying of brain cancer.
TimmyK916 What comment?
@@stanknugget The person deleted it. It was a comment from a week ago saying essentially thank everyone but Neil since he retired and was the reason the band was done.
TimmyK916 Hmm... I don’t remember a comment like that. Are you sure you weren’t drunk?
So sad seeing the truth on Geddy's face as he talks about Neil's retirement.
Geddy just needs to play drums while singing, playing bass and keyboards at the same time
LMFAO!!!
Genius
If anyone could do it's Ged
And guitar
@@iaminyourwalls107 Right. Enter the double neck :)
Watching this interview now, I realize that you can feel the pain in Geddy's voice while he answered these questions, carefully choosing words to protect Neil's privacy, yet knowing that Neil was failing and getting close to the end. All my respect to him for handling it this way, but the tone in his voice reveals the pain inside.
Geddy's words have new meaning today. "Neil has stopped drumming." Sad day. :(
Geddy knew of Neil's illness, but couldn't share the info. So sad.
Props to geddy for leaving it as “he’s retired from drumming and enjoying his life” keeping it class
He probably could play at the time of this interview, the illness must have progressed over some time.
Actually the band had just seen all of Canada react to Gord Downie's lass show and his passing in recent years, so why do that all over again.
Like a punch to the heart after knowing what Neil was going through.
Feel sorry for Ged and Al, they both knew and still had to deal with these bs questions.
RIP Niel
Eddie Trunk is an idiot, too.
@@Excalibur2112 I would have debated you on that 15yrs ago, but my older wiser self is inclined to agree with you
Well with Neil gone,a reunion will never happen,So Rush is officially gone.Thank you guys for being part of my life's soundtrack over the years.
Geddy has the unique quality of actually answering the question that is directed to him. It's a rare thing in the entertainment business as well as sports, media, politics and so on.
When Geddy said Neil was enjoying his life,he knew Neil was literally enjoying his final days on earth.
It's over for good. Thankyou Geddy, Alex and Neil for 40 years of music and memories. A true farewell to kings...
They knew and now it’s all so clear why they always visited.
"Well, you know, I gotta jump in there a second..."
Yes, please, Eddie...because we haven't heard you speak in the last 20 seconds or so. By all means, "jump in."
If Eddie Trunk had any talent or personality he wouldn't be working for a dying music format.
I say Geddy, Alex and Neil "ENJOY" your retirement and live life :-) Thank you for "ALL" of the great music RUSH produced :-) ROCK ON!!!!!!!
@The Albatross Ha ha.
Shall we say, "A Farewell to Kings"
Here sits Geddy, knowing but not saying that Neil is fighting cancer, honoring the talents of one of the most gifted musical groups ever. Rush was a class act from the beginning to the end... God comfort those in the Rush family who are mourning a loss today. We knew Neil, but we did not know Neil...and that's the way he wanted it.
J Read That’s all I could think about while watching this, how incredibly difficult it must have been for him to talk about this stuff and maintain composure knowing full well that Neil was most likely headed for his final journey.
I remember watching this months ago and remembering two things Geddy said that concerned me . " Neil is not just retired from Rush , he has retired from drumming " and " we were just up there to see him " . Neil loved the road and playing / composing percussion. It just sounded odd , and Geddy said it with such finality. At the time my wife said I was being pessimistic. I wish I had been wrong. RIP Proffesor Peart .
neil famously *hated* touring.
I hadn’t seen this before. When he says “he didn’t just retire from Rush, he’s retired from drumming, he’s not drumming anymore” is just so painful to hear.
It scary to think that Geddy and Alex knew that Neil was dying. It's amazing how he keeps his composure through this radio interview.
if its the ONE band that deserves retirement its definitely RUSH....they gave the world such great music....RIP RUSH...
I can see Geddy misses Rush and playing , so do we Geddy .
I would volunteer.
I could actually play a certain amount of their songs.
But mostly not.
No one could.
never in the history of bands has a band served its fans and represented a nation as well as these three gentlemen
classic boys... just classic.
Untrepid One fuck off. From all RUSH fans
Triumph another 3 piece Canadian band is like that when mike Levine the bass player passed away they ended it like that cause they wanted to do 1 last album but it never happened cause the passing of mike Levine
I’m in a stoner rock band but Rush was a huge inspiration and part of my life. I love Rush man the true power trio!
True Rush Fan Sense late 1970s when I was a Kid. You all truly inspired my life as I am a professional drummer.. Thank you guys for so many great Shows and albums that transcend time and bring me back Your music has truly blessed my life ...
Title should have been discusses the lack of possibility. Neil was going to play the drums at the highest possible level of performance on the instrument, or he was going to retire, and physical health issues dictated the latter. We still have the music, and the live DVDs to capture some of the live experience, and it remains and will remain the best that popular music ever produced, or ever will produce.
I suspect it was more than physical with Neil. Although he somehow returned from his awful family tragedies of the late nineties, I got the sense that he emotionally had one foot out of the door despite remaining a consummate professional.
Amen, bro
Clearly the power of the Friendship, and the Hardest secret to keep is clear, here if you listen. ie Geddy talks about him, Alex and Neil, still being friends, wining, Dining hanging out enjoying each others company, but just before the turn of a minute, geddy says I'm sure there more Music to come from me and Alex, no mention of Neil at all. they all knew Neil was fighting a battle, and they all knew what time he had left, no matter how long it was, neil was going to spend it with his family, and his two best friends who kept his secret right till the very end. Well done guys, you did Neil proud, I still Believe Neil was the greatest drummer that ever lived. Rock on Neil RIP.
With Geddy's mention of Neil "not drumming anymore," I can confidently say that his brain cancer was a major reason for his retirement going to that extent. He (and Alex) knew about it, but held up his end of the bargain to keep Neil's illness a "closely-guarded" secret. And he did so by keeping it to himself in this interview.
No shit Captain Obvious....
From what I've read, the decision to retire happened before any cancer diagnosis. Neil was suffering with other physical ailments that cause him intense pain while drumming. He had said he would see all these happy faces filling a concert hall watching them play and he knew he was the only one in the room feeling utterly miserable. Another reason for retiring was because his little daughter was missing him being away so much. Then unfortunately, he got seriously ill within a year or so of retiring and passed away 3 and a half years later. My sister died from the same type of brain cancer that Neil had and her doctor told us that if you are to get a brain tumor, that is the worst one to have. Brain cancer is not an automatic death sentence. Some types can be treated and the long term survival rate is very good, but Glioblastoma is always fatal. Living with it for over three years like Neil did is actually longer than most.
BigHeadConnor
A) He had formally announced his retirement from Rush in December 2015 yes, assuming that is what you’re talking about. Missing his daughter was also cited as a reason indeed. But in an early January 2016 or so interview of Geddy Lee with Kylie Olson at Abbey Road Studios, she asked him about Neil’s retirement, and he said: “whether that reluctance to perform extends to the studio is something we haven’t talked about.” That’s why I maintain his cancer prompted that extension to be the case. HOWEVER, I also have no doubt that even if it had not been for the cancer diagnosis, he probably would still be retired to the extent of not playing drums period.
B) My sincere condolences for your sister 😢 That is never a good thing, so again I am so sorry for your loss! And Neil’s athletic perseverance and tough skin showed in battling that aggressive brain cancer. He had the same mentality with drumming, thus how and why he lasted longer than most other drummers. So of course that same mindset applied to his battle with brain cancer, thus how and why it lasted longer than for most other patients of that illness.
really, you can confidently say that? are you new here? thanks for keeping us so informed on that matter. you pick up on things so differently than us.
If it was just up to Neil, they would have not even tour in 2015. He didn't like to tour anymore, he said it many times in different interviews. He taught that his playing was not up to his own standards anymore. He got sick less than a year after he retired.
It's Not happening guys. Stop asking them. It breaks my heart too but they've given us everything and it's time that we just leave them be. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
Rush wrote the book on how to collaborate and say friends... I don't have words for how much I look up to them for staying grounded despite their success.
They have given me so much happiness throughout their career. They have been the “soundtrack” of my life.
Me too.
Me as well.
Me three they have been the soundtrack to my life since my senior year in high school.
Every album is the story of a part of my life
Hold Your Fire is the best album ever, in my view.
And Prime Mover is the best song, say whatever you like.
I try to listen to these on very special occasions to not wear them out.
We all retire. Some just leave a bigger void than others to fill. These three guys left the equivalent of the Grand Canyon.
How about apologizing for not letting the man complete his sentences? Anyone else remember when interviewers didn't dare interrupt an interviewee?
Deejays are the biggest jackasses in the business. You can just see the weariness in Geddy’s face. You know he’s had to deal with thousands of these guys .
you think eddie is bad.try listening to Gregg and the morning buzz from NH.them guys are awful.
I grew up in Ontario and Rush played my high school - I think they played every high school - but it was just before Peart joined. Years later, I worked part time at a Canadian Tire store in Toronto and saw Geddy shopping there all the time. They never played up their rock star status. Its sad to see Geddy saying in this piece that he and Alex had gone down to Santa Monica to visit Neil together that we now know what was going on. Rest in peace Neil.
All after the fact, you can see it in Geddy’s face. You can see how uncomfortable he is answering the question about Rush getting back together. He peers over his glasses, his eyes start to shift when talking about it. All very sad. You could almost hear the pain in his voice.
The best bad relationship in rush
Always admired how they had such a good relationship with each other
Reason they made such good music
My favorite band ever, superb messages for society on emotion, relationships etc. by the best individual and trio of musicians; fantastic chemistry & symphony of sounds, lyrics.
As a lover of their music, I wish them all the best. For me as a fan, though, I would love to hear more music from them. I know touring is hard. Most of the groups I grew up listening to have called it quits. All I want is for you guys to be comfortable with where you are in life. Thanks for all the music and (for me, just wish I could have seen you in Greenville) but nonetheless as a lifelong fan, I want you to know how much your music has meant to me, immeasurable. Take care and I only wish the best for you!!
So creative and so much class and humility!! The entire band!! If ever there was a role model on how to do it and present yourself!!👍🤟❤️
Impossible. RIP Neil, thanks to Rush for the music and the memories
THANK YOU GEDDY ALEX AND NEIL FOR EVERYTHING YOU'VE GIVEN AND SHARED WITH US. 🇺🇸 TO THE BEST DRUMMER IN MY LIFETIME ....WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU PROFESSOR 🙏❤🙏✌.
I wish i had a friendship like Alex and Geddy have
It's sad to see Rush go (particularly with a lack of fanfare), but Neil has more than earned his retirement. I'm just glad he's still with us and he didn't die young like Keith and John.
Too clever a man to follow such steps.
Pretty sure Neil wasn’t abusing substance like Keith and John did
I know. If anybody deserved an official farewell tour it was them. The fans did, too but mostly them. Would have been a chance for closure, to say goodbye to a band we've listened to for our entire lives and for the Big Three to feel the adulation.
@@golf4ubacknine768 We sure wondered when the George Strom .. Interview was done ! 😤😤
This comment hurts like hell right now 😭 Rest in peace, Neil. You will be sorely missed
RUSH.....MY BAND... always will be 😊👍
UB40 was the only concert my son Ian (now deceased) and I ever went to in Seattle We both are big Rush fans. The music knows no age limit it was the best Band either one of us had ever seen. I will always cherish the memory.
I never got to see Rush but I'm grateful for the countless years of entertainment they have left us with. Thank you guys.
That would be a great idea! Look forward to hearing that band.
Consumate professional, kind and soft spoken, truly a great guy
THE most phenomenal rock band ever. There will never be a trio of rock musicians that even come close to RUSH.
Geddy was such an inspiration to my brother,he will always be a wonderful person.Bobby Bent
Geddy Lee:
Eddie Trunk: me
I agree. So incredibly annoying. Geddy just patiently listening to this fool ramble on and on about himself.
"I was in Denver for that concert during the R40 tour, and we talked backstage, remember, and I was talking to another guy who said that you and Alex should start a band, right. That sounds like a good idea. And the next day through the beauty of the internet it says, Eddie Trunk says Rush are getting back together, and I was like, oh god. But that does sound like a great idea." That was 80 percent of the video.
Geddy, I was introduced to Rush in high school 44 years ago and still listen to the music today! ENJOY RETIREMENT!!
Love you, Geddy. 19 times in concert. Signals was thee best.
At the time of the interview, Neil was being given palliative care for Glioblastoma. This type of cancer is100% deady , and grows horribly fast . I can't imagine how devastating such a diagnoses would be . Life can be shitty . He deserved another 20 years . RIP Neil .
So much amazing music. So many memories. Rush is no more, but the music is eternal.
Geddy is truly a class act!
Now that the Professor has left this plane of existence, I realize that at 0:17, Geddy alludes to Neil's inevitable demise. RIP Neil Peart.
Truck never misses an opportunity to blow his own trumpet. Look at the way he keeps pointing at Geddy - so RUDE!
And Geddy being the gentleman he is, just let's it happen.
Rush the Working Man's band. Their music is always going to be remembered.
What a great man and a great band. I grew up with you guys and I'm so glad we found each other many years ago. You guys are the true word of class! I wish you well in you future endeavors. Take off guys it's been a pleasure listening !!!
Love RUSH and will miss them. But I completely understand if they decide to hang it up! I’ve been working for 36 years and want to be done at 40!
Both Geddy and Alex, very loyal to Neil and protecting his privacy right to the end!
His solo album from 2000 is amazing. It was ahead of its time and needed to age like a bottle of his wine. You can hear vapor trails in it a little but the strings really add a lot.
Each word that Geddy spoke in hindsight was carefully chosen as to answer Trunks questions in a somewhat parallel reality as Trunk like the rest of us were unaware of the truth Geddy knew. Geddy seems to give the vibe that Rush is over due to some circumstance beyond their control and adds that not only has Neil retired from Rush he has retired from drumming. Also seeming to be a circumstance beyond his control that has made the decision for the reality of the here and now. Neil, was dedicating what time he had left to his family and physically unable to continue drumming. Why else would the worlds greatest drummer just stop playing altogether. Geddy, dealing with a maelstrom of emotions in his life. How do Alex and Geddy continue to collaborate and people not see it as Rush with a new drummer? It almost forces him into a fucked up situation of ending his career with Rush and losing a dear relationship with Neil and having to reinvent his next musical direction. Alex the same issues. What a sad and tragic conclusion to such a positive success story. Unexpected to say the least. I always thought Neil would live to be a very old and even wiser man. Geddy and Alex are true friends to Neil for respecting his wishes. We all grew up with Rush and now a big part of things is missing. 34 years ago on a school night my friend and I took the bus to the Forum to see them on the Power Windows tour. Had we not the sadness would be coupled with regret.
"I and this show inadvertently started a rumor..." Eddie Trunk "inadvertently" starts many rumors that wind up being completely false. Just ask Kiss, Van Halen, etc. Maybe it isn't so inadvertent.
Decades of pleasure and meaning at various times in life. Roll the Bones made a definite impact as it related to my job at the time. Then there was 2112 in the 70’s. Just awesome...
When Gentlemen look up the word Gentleman in the dictionary, they see a photo of Geddy Lee.
RUSH FOREVER !
Neil has been through hell over the years with losing a wife and a daughter. If he doesn't want to play drums anymore, he has earned that right. I got to see them live several times over the years and still have their entire catalogue on CD so I will enjoy the memories and continue to listen to their music until I am dead and buried.
Most guys would have simply stopped after that. Two enormous, soul-destroying gut punches in a very short span. Neil got up every day and went out in to the world and did his thing. More than the amazing percussion, the thought-provoking lyrics, the commitment to the music and playing it honestly, more than anything, that man has my greatest respect for that. Love to meet him one day but would respect him far too much to ever go up to him and disturb him in public.
I was hoping for a much different answer. I've loved these guys since I was about 15.
RUSH---Greatest Band EVER...
Been a fan since "Working Man"
Enjoy the retirement , guys...you more than earned it!!
Me too
Thought they lived to play !
Retire ? Hhmmmm🤔🤔🤔
I am thankful I saw all these bands pretty much in their prime back in the 70' s and 80' s. And for a tenth of the price.
rush tickets were never expensive, i saw them and paid like 20-30 bucks and it was nearly 3 hours long, i saw ween a few years after and tickets were like 60 fucking dollars, did van halen even charge that much? but rush has always had super strong album sales whereas ween has always been a cult band, a really amazing live band that were known for doing 3-4 hour sets but still a cult band so i kinda got the point.
It's called inflation.
I was so glad to FINALLY get my chance to see the band, before it all ended....particularly,since the first date here, sold out in a matter of minutes, and, the decision was made,to come back to town,a few days, and,a few hundred miles later,on,what would have been an "off day",for the band, and, crew.
Wow! I watched this months ago then watching now...
Soundtrack of my life!!!
Thank you Mr. Weinrib, for all the music in this 40 years!
Please, extend my thanks to your friends Alex Živojinović Lifeson and Neil Peart.
To my eternal happiness, I was able to assist them at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
One of the most important musical experiences of my life.
Thanks!
When and if ever Geddy and Alex were to do something in music again together I would be so up for it! Because I love these guys and I friggen love Rush!
We love you Geddy. Would love to hear something from you or Alex. Maybe kind of like a Rush sound from you 2?
RUSH FOR ABOUT ANOTHER YEAR!
I need to go watch a Rush video now!
Geddy is a true gentleman and would never admit it, but underneath I think he's pissed at Neil for calling it quits
Bless your heart . Love Rush one of the best bands of all time.
Eddie really loves him some Eddie
Well Lee and Lifeson are certainly taking their sweet time. No problem with that. Just give Stewart Copeland a call when your ready.
Maybe Peart would be willing to remain as lyricist, at least part-time. Perhaps that wouldn't work though, since he approached lyric writing from a hands-on drumming perspective, but who knows. Remember, in addition to being one of the greatest rock drummers, Peart is also a professional writer of both poetry and prose. It's pretty cool that he is collaborating with Kevin J. Anderson.
Neil could be a great science fiction author with interesting ideas...
I thought about it too, but i think that his contribution to the band was paramount.
As much as Geddy and Alex are amazing musicians, Neil is a true Goliath at his things, hardly believable.
It would just not be as good.
My biggest regret is that I never had the chance to see them play live. However Peart deserves the retirement for just how much he contributed. I'll still be forever grateful for the catalog that the band has left.
It's All Relative....What will be...will BE...Love to You Schnoz!!!! Peace
Somewhere, Neil and Eddie are jamming together. RIP
Great Band!!!
Thank you 2112 you guys are the best
RIP....My Mentor. So painful. Neil Peart, play those drums and write in the new world whatever it may be....rest easy. Your BIGGEST fan.
The pain in his face and almost holding back tears in saying they go to visit regularly
MIKE PORTNOY on DRUMS!
Geddy needs to get on the Joe Rogan experience!
I want to drink everything in Geddy's wine cellar too!
I grew up with Rush. I discovered them at Farewell to Kings and followed them after. It really does feel like they have been part of my life. No shit, honestly. Very sad that Neil is gone, especially since I just finished reading Ghost Rider. The world treated Neil unfairly. RIP.
It's all about trunk I my show started a rumor
Pure class.....
