What an amazing adventure steve! The scenery was amazing! Thanks for sharing this with us.
KLRs are the gold standard of adventure bikes. Keep yourself in one piece... Best of luck!
What a ride. Thanks for taking us with you!!
CV carbs like yours use a rubber diaphram (using engine vacuum) to raise the slide needle.this enables them to compensate for altitude much better rhan older carbs.Cheers..!
Thanks for taking us along 👍
I was stationed in Colorado Springs. I decided to ride my Yamaha R1 (crotch rocket) up the mountain one day. It was 80 at the bottom and mid 30's with some rough wind at the top. It was still half gravel back then. Going up was fine but going back down on that gravel with a sport bike was sketchy. But at least I can say I did it. I miss living out there.
Very cool. I feel your pain on the wool sock question- it's pretty easy down under to find a gumboot sock or tramping sock with 80% wool, but the rest is going to be some synthetic fibre. If you're willing to pay enough there are wool and silk blends without plastic in them that will have a bit of stretch and won't feel like tea cozies on your feet, but I don't know how hardwearing they are. I like a linen sock for fast drying from sweat alone, if you're not actually submerging your feet.
Stephen gads that bring back memories. last time I was in Manitou was crewing for a Pikes Peak hill climb event. That was in the early 1970s. Then, the road was fully packed and graded but NOT PAVED in most places. We were running a over glorified VW on a aluminum pipe frame with a front bucket. I recall splitting the halves to rebuild it once on the spot. We never did speeds like that. BTW I was not the driver. good show guy.
14:18 Grandpa needs to get out of the way lol
Don't know if you can find them now, but in the early 70's Full Bore used to have racing leather suits for MX and others they sponsored, sold them too, (They gave me a couple pairs as we used and sold their products) In 28 degree weather wearing a rain suit under it, and a Bell Star helmet (with a 'muffler' wrapped around throat to kill cold and noise) I was toasty warm even at 80 mph for over an hour on the interstate, and even got a bit warmish on way back when the sun came out. oh, yeah, my hands used to freeze in cold weather until a friend brought me some 12 volt heated gloves he found in Europe, Germany I think.
And the camera batteries lose capacity when cold - keep them close to your body, and keep camera warm while recording. That's also why a Tesla car can't charge up in cold weather.😁 😎
Get you an action cam. Don't spend too much. Key is to have battery interchange. Taiwan makes some nice ones.
Thanks for the footage. Never seen it in person, this is the first I have seen it other then from a camera mounted to a race car 😂
Nice ride going up pikes peak
Hi Stephen. Great trip you were up around 14000 ft must get pretty cold. It made for a really interesting video. Beautiful spot I like the rock formations. It makes a great bike ride . I noticed it’s 25 mph in places . Maybe the cold effects camera. I sold my bikes. CB900F. Honda & 1973 YAMAHA RD 350 . Greetings from Canada Trucker AL retired 🇺🇸👍🇨🇦
Good to see you back out there
Some cell phone batteries HATE cold weather.
There is another good spot to ride called the knives Edge. I’m not sure how far it is from Pikes Peak. My Brother lives in the springs
I tried to make it up Pikes Peak this summer. The wind was insane. Didn't help i was in a minivan with a bunch of crying kids and wife. So i had to turn around. They ended up shutting it down shortly after.
What a cool ride !!
18:44 finally can get some speed again
Classic bike! Here for it, always good to see you man. I am currently converting my old 1973 Suzuki TS185 2 stroke into an adventure bike like that. I am using several types of ammo boxes out back for saddlebag type storage system that also contains my brake lights and turn signals. Love all bikes, but especially that relic..
It great that you get out and go do stuff while you’re single. I’m not sure I could’ve done it
Wow - you are a lot tougher than me! Can’t believe you were able to do this ride in November. I rode to the top of Mt. Evans last summer and the weather wasn’t good that day above 11,000 ft, with cold, fog and wind. I froze, and that was in August! I wasn’t adequately dressed for the conditions though. Heated grips would have made a big difference but I didn’t have those either.
Oh, and you can use earplugs for the wind noise.

Great video thank you for sharing it
Take care👍
Get out there and fixed it

PIKES PEAK is 14,110 feet high unless you climb the tower, but looks like they took the tower down. They finally paved the road all the way up. When I was there in 1956 and 1961, the road above 12,000 feet was gravel. They have races every year in July up the road. Semis are even raced up the mountain.
I can’t remember what year I went up it as a kid with my parents but it had to be in the 1970s or 80s and it was still gravel at the top and I know my brother went up it with his family in the early 2000s and I think he said it was still gravel at the top
Me and my family went up to the summit 18 years ago and it was gravel then too!!🇺🇸
@@stacyreid5077 I lived out there until 09 and it was still gravel halfway up. They paved it all the way a couple years later.
@@SuperSecretSquirell awesome Thank you for replying back to me and letting me and others know that.

Interesting
Steve. I bought a triumph from my brother in Colorado last year. I’m in PA. Do I go up or down on the jets? And do I need to replace the main jet also?
I'm not quite sure honestly. My best suggestion is to find a Triumph forum and ask the guys with more experience than I have.
