Dude I have been riding for years, I mean YEARS I'm 62 had my 1st mini bike when I was 6 years old. This was the best explained training video I have ever seen.
I did not start learning to ride until 61 years old. I didn't even know how to shift. I took the MC safety course here in Homestead Florida and still was intimidated. With this I have learned Light years more!
This is awesome, your explanation is simple and direct. Thank you for sharing. I'll be honest with you, I don't have a bike yet. It won't be until 2023 H.D Sport Glide. Need to pay my truck off first but I am putting money aside as well. The last time I rode was 44 years ago. This will be my first bike, everything you show on your videos I plan on doing, practice, practice and practice. Thank you so much for your videos Sir. 👍
@@locoocho2415 Thank you very much! Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 You will definitely be ahead of the game if you keep watching. You will hear me in your head as soon as you sit on the bike. 😁
Wow, I've been riding since 1974 and I just learned plenty from watching this instructional video. I retired from the Army in September 2017 and was diagnosed with stage four cancer just one month after retiring. My deployments up until my retirement and my treatments for cancer following retirement has basically kept me off of a bike for several long years. I am now however cancer-free after 4 years of brutal treatment and I'm back on my Harley and I'm starting to enjoy my retirement, finally. I'm not going to call this a refresher course I'm going to call this excellent information and knowledge for any Rider no matter what experience they have. Thanks for what you do, I've truly learned more today as one should always do to keep their head on a swivel, literally.
Mark this is the best news I’ve heard all day!! I’m so happy you’re cancer free!!😊 Also, thank you for your service! I’m happy that my channel has been helpful to you! That makes all the time and effort that I put into this so worthwhile!
@Mark Lee - Congratulations on being cancer-free! Also thank you for your service in the Army. Your comment was awesome to read and I felt inspired to tell you so! Always continuing to acquire new knowledge is my favorite part of motorcycling, and drving big trucks for work. Here's to your many more cancer free years with your knees in the wind and a smile on your face! Cheers Brother!
@@nesanders311 Thank you for your remarks, much appreciated. I truly wish more new riders would get trained up first and that dealerships would sell bikes based on a riders experience rather than the size of the wallet. Take care sir and thanks again.
I’m a novice rider returning after being away from riding for 16 years. I only rode three seasons when I WAS active. This is the kind of instructional video series I’ve been looking for, and really, really appreciate your thorough explanations and your super positive attitude/encouragement. Thank you sir! New subscriber here!
I didn't even finish watching this video yet...but he's already proven to me that he is not only extremely knowledgeable and skilled but most importantly, he's an amazing instructor who is still seeing it and explains things from the other rider's perspective perfectly. I'm 55 and have been riding for 30 yrs. I'm an Ok rider who is looking to improve his slow maneuvering skills on a Road Glide. His explanations are detailed and describe the order of events perfectly, with just enough emphasis on the key points. Great Job!
For the countless hours you have spent helping people learn via UA-cam AND at your practice sessions (not to mention the hours spent editing) FOR FREE, you deserve to be compensated. If monetizing your knowledge at $4.99 a month is a deal breaker for some, there are other UA-camrs they can continue to watch for free 99. Keep up the great work Mr. Simmons. Stay blessed
Thank you Tissa for your kind words, but my husband is continuing to make his practice session videos accessible to all PRELOADERS and those that are finding him through various groups-he is still Paying It Forward!!
This is golden advice ! So glad I found you. I am a re-entry rider and boy do I feel like a newbie. I haven't ridden a bike let alone a bicycle in over 20 years, so the first three days were admittedly embarrassingly terrifying. I was wobbly and shaking, but when I followed an old school Harley rider and followed his movements it started coming back to me. I went out today and there was a ton of road construction going on, so I got good stop and go, slow and go riding in. Turning slowly is my biggest obstacle today. Oh, and I hardly use my rear brake, so I need to, I see.

"The leaning of the motorcycle and the fear" You nailed it with this video. I finally can confidently perform a U-turn because of you and this video. I spent time on and off practicing Paladino's videos and could never get it. I even reached out to him and he suggested I be in 2nd gear when performing his routine. But I was confused, no one starts in 2nd gear from a complete stop especially at a traffic light when attempting a U-turn. Also I could never get the whole "feather the clutch". I dropped my bike many times because I was riding to fast with his method. I love how you called out "its not necessary to make a U-turn within 18 ft. and not necessary to lean". I actually searched You tube "how to execute a U-turn without leaning" and this video came up. I first practiced the slow crawl , exercise #2; then continued with slightly turning the wheel, then I jumped into slowly performing the U-turn (while dragging the brake). Got it within 5 minutes! As you stated, just focus on the rear brake. Stayed within friction zone and preload/keep throttle loaded while dragging the brake. I got sharper turns the more I applied more rear brake. So freakin' easier with your method, so awesome. Wish I found this video while back. I actually only watched your videos about your Motorcycle Jack. Those were the only ones I watched (start to finish). I'm firm a believer now with the preload/friction zone/and dragging the brake. That worked perfect for me. Was like a dream, not having the fear of the bike falling over. Thank you so much
ROBERT! I went back to watch this today 12/19/21. LOVE IT. I went out and practiced u-turns for an hour (of course in the process i go through Exercises 1 and 2). After 30 minutes I thought I should get a tape measure and understand the lengths I was working on. I can definitely do the 27 foot day in and day out (keep it loaded, cover the brake, keep throttle where it is, head and eyes, handlebars) BUT TODAY I REALIZED I HAD BEEN PRACTICING IN A STREET ITSELF CURB TO CURB WAS 27 FEET. GREAT. So I laid out a tape measure at 16 feet and then went around left and left then a u turn then rights and rights and each time kept my wheel just outside that 16 ft tape. OUTSTANDING. I felt for the first time I really understand the POTENTIAL of being the boss of my motorcycle. WOW the confidence. I wasn't leaning the bike. I WAS NOT LEANING THE BIKE. No need to do that. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Thanks again.
oh man, this gives me hope! I went out and practiced last night from watching just a few minutes of Robert's suggestions. I just found the channel. the 3 P's is right! I dont have my license yet, I am so excited.
I'm 43 years old and just getting into riding. Thank you for sharing your experience with me and others. I am definitely the kind of person that you made this video for. I am going to take your lessons for a spin tomorrow.

Slow speed manuevering is probably the most valuable skill on a bike on the streets. Thanks for this, just got back on a bike and i really need to repractice this.
This is first video I've come across that explained the basics of making a u-turn without leaning. Tight u-turns have always scared me because I thought I needed to lean my bike. You've done an amazing job explaining the basics and mechanics of slow speed riding and combining it with a u-turn. Thank you.

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Tight u-turns have always scared me because my bike weighs almost 600 lbs wet and is top center heavy (Sports bike) and there is no way that I know that I could pick this up if I dropped it. And since I have dropped it once and it took 3 people to get it back, I am not in a hurry for a repeat. That said, I want to learn more and I have been riding on and off since I was 9. But I was fearless then, I am 60 now and know better.
First THANK YOU!! I have been riding a motorcycle for decades yes I'm that old. I purchased my first bagger last October and became depressed as I didn't know if I could Ride it right, it was so heavy and hard to make those U-turns. I told my wife I might want to sell it and just keep my sport bikes, that would've been a mistake. I found you on UA-cam when you were new at it and you didn't even have a microphone, it was hard to hear you sometimes, but I've stuck with it and now I ride my bagger with confidence. You're doing a great job and I appreciate your help and next time I'm on the East Coast I need to come and find you and take one of your classes. Keep doing what you're doing, there's a lot of us out there that Appreciate your Time and Commitment to us.

Off the physics of a motorcycle utilizing your back break makes sense at points as I was taught when I was riding to only use 10% of the back break, but the front brake is going to want to make you fall if you're over utilizing it in a turn, makes so much sense. Thank you.

I love your channel, I had neck surgery and quit riding for a few years. I was so ashamed of myself because I had such fear and never did that before. After 40 years of riding, I couldn't believe I was afraid. You are helping me and confidence
I’m in a similar situation. I was doing reasonably well with my low speed maneuvers. Then I had shoulder surgery and couldn’t ride for a while. Now I feel vulnerable and afraid to lean it far at low speeds again. I gotta get back to the empty lot to practice and regain my skills. I already took my bags off and put on some crash bar protectors

i have seen a lot of videos that just say lean the bike ride the brake and clutch turn your head and go.. this guy actually goes through the steps of how to get there.. great video. well done sir.
Tight slow turns is what I've been practicing. First bike this summer. Feeling much better lately. I need to get to the local h.s. parking lot and practice this. You've got awesome balance and control.
Robert, Memorial Day is for my brothers and sisters that paid the ultimate sacrifice. Memorial Day is never Happy. Veterans Day is for Veterans that are no longer serving. Armed Forces Day are for those currently serving. Thank you for acknowledging Memorial Day and its importance.
My dad (also a Robert) served in Vietnam and I observe both in memory of fallen and living soldiers. He may do the same. What really matters is he is thankful and tipped his hat to those that have and do serve. Still, thanks for the note. Great channel and viewers.
I think Memorial Day is ALWAYS happy. It is possible to simultaneously morn those who lost their lives fighting for our freedom AND being happy about the freedom that their sacrifice provides us. I am pretty sure that you understand the sentiment behind his message.
Robert, I was turned on to you by a brother named “ Tall” and he has his own channel. You are one of the only instructors that does not insult your students. The fluidity of how smoothly and easily my dude right here makes these small little turn in the beginning of the video tho!!! Wow. I wish everyone who watches these videos knew how extremely difficult it is to make full turns and U turns in such a tiny little area like half a parking space. Insanity!!!
2 years ago after riding a sports bike for years I decided to go with a Harley. I must say this is what I needed to see as I found that my confidence in turning at slow speeds was very shakey with a bigger bike. All I can say is thanks man 👍🏽

I'm a minute and 30 seconds into your video and I'm impressed already. Great presentation, and great skills. I'm a 59 year old USMC veteran and I've been riding since I was 12 or 13. Thank you for caring enough about the rest of us to spend the time & effort to present this information. God Bless you.
This really is the best explained video for U turns. I’m a new rider and when I took the class they never explained how to keep u to our foot in the rear brake and ride the friction zone. My foot kept going to the ground. Thank you for explaining this and I will practice this.
I began riding mini bikes when I was a child and rode regularly on cruisers until I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. The treatment left me unable to ride because I was so sick, so I just got back on a bike for the first time in 4 years only this time, I’m riding a street bike - something I’ve never done. I can’t thank you enough for this video because I’ve been having a tough time with those slow turns and watching you make that maneuver was literally an “ah-ha” moment. Thanks for debunking the common - and contradictory - myths about leaning -YES and leaning -No. You’ve explained that 5 (as I see it) variables are at play: throttle, rear brake, speed, leaning (bike and/or body) and circle radius; it’s up to me - in learning and practising - to play with these 5 and find my own ‘balance’. Especially helpful are the four steps in building up the tight turn/U-turn routine and overcoming fear. Step by step.

I just spent 42K, with extras, on a new Indian bike that is over 1000lbs. Not ridden in 20 years and even back then never had a bike this heavy. I was terrified to ride it. Almost dumped it in the dealer parking lot so refused to drive it home. I just lacked the confidence. My motor cop buddies from the patrol told me to just go out in a parking lot and practice the basics and take a class. That's my plan but still afraid. Bike is being delivered sometime this week. After seeing this video I am FAR less afraid to get on it and practice. Still worried about damaging the bike if it falls so I may purchase some police bars that go around the bags but will see. Well done. This is so helpful. I can not thank you enough. If you collect patches I would be happy to send one. ;-)

I really appreciated your comments about duck walking. Unlike the other retired police officer videos who makes you feel like your an idiot if you duck walk, your view is realistic and spot on. I try to avoid as much as possible but from time to time I find myself in a situation when I just feel I have to. UT the approach here can reduce those times even further. I have always felt 27 feet u turns was enough. Those other videos seem to stress 18 and if you can't do 18 then you shouldn't be riding. The feeling I get from them. Not yours though. You truly are a blessing to the motorcycle world. I am happy to join!!!

Another Helpfull advise. I just wish you can make a video with a passenger on and do those slow speed turns. Thats one of my weakness right now or im not confident when I have my wife as my bike ride. Whenever were going to make a tight u turn I always ask her to go down first. My bike Is GS rally and im only 5”9 in height so im tip toed. I think a lot of riders will appreciate if you make slow speed exercises with a passenger on. More power to you sir and thank you so much. P.S. I anit doing push ups no more coz practice makes perfect. Its been 1 month for me and I practice 3 Times a week. Im lock and loaded of confidence! Cheers
Hey Ed. Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 I actually made a video regarding riding 2-up while slow riding a few months ago. These kinds of videos have been extremely helpful…. As a kid, I grew up on dirt bikes, I had an enduro, trail bikes, 3 wheelers and all that is a great base for knowing how to shift and use the clutch…. But those are smaller bikes.. if you make a mistake , you can usually compensate with strength… and you’ll be ok.. but it allows you to learn bad habits or at least less likely to stick to the actual proper techniques… Once you get on a heavy bike, that all changes..
This is why I keep watching videos. Knowledge really is power. Hearing you say I don’t even really need to learn tight u-turns just made a world of difference for me. I just bought my bike, and it will be my only means of transportation, so I need to get road read very soon. I’ll learn tight u-turns some other time, but for now I just want to work on getting it down enough to not disturb traffic cause I’m messing up on a u-turn. Thank you for your kind, and patient approach. There’s another UA-cam biker I won’t mention that feels like an angry dad. Hard to listen to. I feel like watching your videos will have me ready sooner rather than later. Thanks again.
You are a great instructor brother I appreciate it more then you know more practice for me to do I love having homework from you means i get to ride an practice some more take care an god bless brother
I just started riding aPCX 150, yesterday a scooter, too much to learn to shift gears and to ride for this 65 retired gal! I find it hard to get education to ride a scooter like this so I am adopting it to my bike! Thank you so much for the way you explain and demonstrate each exercise!!
Robert, again, thanks for your time and all that you do for our riding community. For the price of 2 cups of coffee a month, I am very pleased to support your efforts here on your channel. I have spent much more and learned much less elsewhere.
Thank you. I've been riding for almost 60 years. Many track days, riding clinics, Cal. superbike etc., etc. This is the best slow riding advice I've ever had. Both psychological and technical skills. THANKS
Finally someone talking REAL LIFE stuff ... There's so much youtubers / bike vlogers that are constantly telling people the have to lean, make tight turns and all that stuff. They even kinda blame people for having fear and some even encurage people to things they are not comfortable with and eventually force them into crashing. I'm not saying that you never ever should consider learning to make tight turns or that it doesn't help you not BUT you should not take a risk that's not necessary, especially as a beginner or someone who's riding for quite some time but without ever trying to do such things You need to start slow and work on your skills until you feel confident, if you go step by step your confidence will build up and you'll eventually reach the next level automatically. When I made my bike licence about 23 years ago, nobody was even talking about making tight turns or stuff like that. You need to turn around? Fine, stop somwhere you have enough room and do it however you feel comfortable. You usually won't have to u-turn in the middle of traffic so there's no need to do it fast or tight. What you need to learn is how to lturn left/right from a stand still if you want to turn at any intersection, that's a requiered skill for sure but even there is NO NEED to do it super tight or super fast. Rob Great video. Everyone else is always saying a lean is a must, good to hear there are other ways to accomplish the same thing. Of course having the confidence to lean and make a u-turn within two parking spaces is a good thing also. Thank you again. Definitely gonna be become a VIPreloader. Ride Safe

Good morning Lt. from the Philippines. It's difficult for me to find a parking lot to practice, so everyday I go out into the real world and practice on a small street but most of the time I actually use all the practice session on ALL of your highly motivated videos. The one skill I use is the Slow Ride in traffic that is very crowded with no stop signs or stop lights. Again I can hear you in my head when I am out here in some of most crowded streets in all of Philippines. I truly thank you for that. I was pissed the other day when I grabbed the front brake then I realized I pressed the rear brake the same time for a control stop to keep from hitting the car in front of me. I said to myself damn I almost had to do sit-ups lmao. In addition, last July when I got my first big bike I felt like my motorcycle was my pimp, lmao But as of yesterday I am the mack of motorcycle and I thank you. I kind of show of when I am making u-turns in front of so many other bikers watching me..... I sometimes say aloud I wish Robert can see me now. I download your videos on my phone so I can use them to practice when I am outside. Thanks for all you do and stay blessed my brother.

After watching this video 2x, I will simplify my mental u turn practice. I’m either making 2 left turns or 2 right turns linked together. Trying to make shorter and smoother u turns.

Ok I am a newbie purchased my first Harley Davidson 2021 Sportster 48 1200 cc and was like omg this bike is big. Then I took the CA CHP Riding Safety Course, which really helped. 4 months later, I purchased a 2022 Harley Davidson 2022 Softail Heritage Classic. HD delivered to my home, once the drove off and as I was attempting to turn it around; yes it fell over. I wished I had seen your video on how to lift a motorcycle up. Tha bike sat tipped over in my driveway for 15 minutes- not good at all. However, my male neighbors came to the rescue. This is my first time watching your videos and they are fantastic. Whenever you are on the West Coast (Los Angeles Area) be sure to send a shout out so I can get the word out you are coming to help us become better riders. Until next time; Be safe my friend!

Robert, In my quest to be skilled and confident with u-turns and low speed maneuvers, I came across this video. I'm committed to mastering the small u-turns, but now understand that leaning is not absolutely necessary to make reliable u-turns in real-world situations. Your comment around 22:14 "speed makes me _have_ to lean" was an eye-opener. And your example about making a u-turn toward an object such as a curb, car, or wall using a controlled, slower speed u-turn rather than a potentially riskier, leaning u-turn requiring speed is really an important point to consider. Awesome content backed up with great visuals. Thanks!!!

I didn't even finish watching this video yet...but he's already proven to me that he is not only extremely knowledgeable and skilled but most importantly, he's an amazing instructor who is still seeing it and explains things from the other rider's perspective perfectly.

That’s outstanding Mark!! Confidence is a powerful thing! Keep it up brother!
I practiced so much today doing U turns and figure 8's at low speeds that my rear brake started squeaking so I had to give it a rest...

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Tight u-turns have always scared me because my bike weighs almost 600 lbs wet and is top center heavy (Sports bike) and there is no way that I know that I could pick this up if I dropped it. If you collect patches I would be happy to send one. ;-)

I thought I was providing useful content on my UA-cam channel on bikes - but this is next level right here. I have never seen this much good info presented in any msf basic or advanced course. Is “MOTOBLADE” the name of your UA-cam channel?
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle I absolutely subscribed after seeing this video. And yessir, Motoblade is my channel on UA-cam. Thanks again for the great content. I'm enjoying catching up on your past videos.

Just bought an Ultra and realized I knew very little about slow speed riding. I watched your vids and started practicing and now can make that U turn in less than 18 and no more duck walk LOL. This great. My instructor never told us about using the rear brake on U turns and I struggled with my test because of it. When I realised it was OK to do so, I started practising by myself (just keeping my foot over it and “feathering” it where needed”) and it got me through.

Hey Lou. I’m glad it helped. It’s my pleasure. 😊
My name is Les Larios, and am a disabled vet. I have been on bikes the majority of my life, however mostly dirt bikes. I have been riding on the highways and back roads now for 20 plus years. I have always admired the smoothness of control motor officers exhibit. I have been working on u-turns for a bit, not that I need them much, but to have another skill set. One never knows what might occur. You are obviously well trained and present this material in a highly professional manner, so thank you for that. Confidence building was a big part of being a military leader, so I understand you well. Thank YOU for your service with the NYPD and motor unit...I know the sacrifices that servants of the people must make. God Bless.
Thank you very much! Also, thank you for your service! 👍🏾

Robert, I ride a 2002 Honda Goldwing. I’ve learned that while all of this applies, practicing this exercise in 2nd gear is much easier than in 1st gear. Not sure if this applies to other motorcycles. I don't know why I'm just now getting to riding videos. I'll be going through your entire collection one by one and twice on Sundays!
My advice is if you really don’t feel confident riding 2-up with your wife, don’t do it.

These kinds of videos have been extremely helpful…. As a kid, I grew up on dirt bikes, I had an enduro, trail bikes, 3 wheelers and all that is a great base for knowing how to shift and use the clutch…. But those are smaller bikes.. if you make a mistake , you can usually compensate with strength… and you’ll be ok.. but it allows you to learn bad habits or at least less likely to stick to the actual proper techniques…
Once you get on a heavy bike, that all changes..

Just stay in your skill zone and you will be safe!
Well said my friend! Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 Preload!!! And Keep It Loaded!!!! ©

Thanks!!!
