I'd give these tones a solid 6/10. great job!
haha, well done ;)
LMAO
KKKK I get the reference
Hell yeah, awesome generic tones.
🤣

Still aint better than 10 Metal Zones at once. Nice video as always
We hooked up six Metal Zones together and it opened up a worm hole in my basement where we were jamming. The cops came over through the wormhole and told us to stop....
I’m my music lesson we hooked up a TC Eyemaster, EHX Metal Muff, EHX Big Muff, TC Fangs and 5 Metal Zones; all through a shitbox of an amp and all at full gain and max volume. Either (somehow) no one heard it we instantly deafened them to the point where they wouldn’t notice it
Oh man, FINALLY SOME OLD CHANNEL's CLASSIC SHOOTOUT!!! I was missing you, Ola the testererrrrr!!!
Honestly they all sound nice. and that's because you're using a mesa boogie amp.anything you plug in to that monster will spit out metals of fire.try using a 15 or 30 watt solid state amp. then you'll hear the big differences between those pedals.specially if you chain them with an eq,noise gate and comps if necessary.
Truth. The TS9 is a completely different pedal when played through a Roland Jazz Chorus as opposed to a Peavey 6505+.
I don't think this is the point of the video. If you play metal and you want an OD, probably you already have a metal amp and need to put an OD boost (the point of the video). If you want to do metal and dont have metal amp, you dont need an OD, you have 2 options: 1) an metal preamp in the return section; 2) distortion pedal in the input of the clean channel
Precision Drive absolutely killed this test, without question - Mooer sounded fantastic too!
Thank you Sweden. You have given us death metal, black metal, Hagström Swedes, and Ola Englund
Tampa Florida gets credit for death metal. And Norway gave us black metal. Not Sweden. sorry buddy. lol
The boss overdrive sounded best to me for some reason
it's gnarly in a good way
The Boss SD1 is best for boosting.
Boss pedals just sound good in general lol, even the ds1
I used to plug my ds1 straight into a peavey vypyr 15 ( love you ola for making a video on that amp) and use it kinda as a boost and get some nice tones for death and black metal
Real shame I plugged the wrong ac adapter into my ds1 ;( rip my first pedal
@@bedofroachesofficial4958 I'll admit to everyone that I'm plugging a modded SD-1 into a '97 silver stripe Peavey Bandit, and it sounds effing brutal.
monstercadaver I’ve been thinking of buying a peavey bandit but there isn’t a lot of metal demos on the bandit
Would it be cool if you could demo your time you get it with and without the sd 1? Also what mod do you have on it?
Hell yeah ola! The Swede! Love your work and it's really inspiring my upcoming stuff. Been watching you for a whole, keep it up!
That Fortin grind was the best, big beefy sound. Woke up a already badass amp, which was already alive on it's own. Great vid!
Perfect! Gonna watch it and drink my morning coffee 👍🏼
I love you 🙏💘👍 Jen..
I love you Jen
Hi Jen!
I prefer to watch with a nice beer can!
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘
The Boss OD-1 was honestly my favorite
I have a Fortin grind and I agree, it does all the right things. That precision drive does sound fantastic. Great video!
Alexander hot pink sounded pretty awesome.
I kept coming back to this video and well i just ordered the Ibanez ts9 and the Alexander hot pink drive. 😊
video starts 0:00
video ends 7:44
Thx man.
Wow thanks, you are an absolute godsend
I found this to be very helpful. Thank you
thanks bro!
I tought it started at 0:01... but who am i to argue with you??
It sounded like the TS9 wasn't even on. You turned the knobs and the tone didn't change.
I immediately thought that, too. Own a TS-9. The TS here didn't really seem to be doing much of anything
Light wasn't on either I don't think
I thought the same thing during the video
@Mendozer01 that's the most annoying part of using it tbh, everyone should mod their ts9 led
The Led is shoddy... But it was on. I can hear the changes...
Nothing like coffee and a new Ola video. 🤘🏻
I have a TS9 and a Precision Drive and, to me, they sound very similar. I really liked the sound of the Boss OD-1 in this video. The pink one sounds nuts too.
I use an AKAI 3 OverDrive. It came with four different chips. Each chip three sounds. Including the famous JRC4588D chip. In total 12 different sounds. Easy to change, great sounds, beautiful shiny mirror design and just perfect for metal. Quite surprised its hardly seen on metal pedalboards.
Torn between two.
Unsurprisingly the Horizon Precision Drive and surpringsly the Sugar Drive. Both added that typical metal boost.
Joshua Batch yeah same for me
Yea, that sugar sounded real good. The parts I was listening to were the pick attack and the tightness of the palm mutes and the Sugar just seemed to overall sound better in that area then the others. The TS9 was really good too and can see why people buy it.
Precision drive is having more control over chugging I guess.i'd pick this one
Love the video as always Ola! I’d definitely have to go with the Horizon Devices Precision Drive. Love that pedal man!!! 🤘🏻💚🤘🏻💯
I like the format, the personality, the humor and the directness
They all sounded the same through that rig
Precision Drive for modern metal.
For everything else, the old TS9 is good enough.
The best sounding over drive was the band aid on Olas thumb.
He probably cut himself on someone's face.
@@monstercadaver #olathebleed
I just assumed you were going to create the sickest nastiest metal riff ever to demo and of course you pulled thru and did just that! Wow.
Dude! I’ve NOT been lovin my OCD lately so I went and found my Boss SD1 (same as OD really) and WHAM!!! So after a few min of jammin 2nite I plopped in front of the smart tv and looked up some comparison vids... THIS ROCKS Ola! Love it buddy! So many colors and through a classic Trem o Verb? Killer tones and that thing is just beautiful w the tweed face plate
Hell yeah!! Make this a series!
(Boss sd-1 and some Klone would be nice addition to the next wankathon)
MXR Sugar Drive is Klonish.
@@ontheroad579 Oh... So it seems. I was thinking more in the lines of Mythos Mjölnir or Desibelics, but anyways.
Where's that METAL ZONE pedal plugged into the FX loop on the back of the amp head? That thing had bone crushing crunch for real.
Precision drive for me also. It shapes all my tuning 6-8 string guitars. All of them do sound good! But like you said,, you can tweak that pedal so well with everything
Thank you Ola!! You are the best!!
Yeah, the Horizon Devices Precision Drive sounded the best with that type of Riff/Sound
greetings ola! how about old school solid state amps from 80s and 90s crate leave etc.
Awww got excited thinking it was the new Fortin pedal. The pedals sound so much better through your setup though!
I thought they sounded very similar but I agree with the PD... I think they all will work & depending on how you use them they inspire different kinds of playing. That's why I love overdrives & playing & stacking different overdrives.
Ever since I bought a precision drive I refuse to try any other brand. It's my favorite pedal of all time.
I must just suck at using mine - I feel like it’s the hardest pedal in the world to get a good sound with. It’s always way too much all over the place and super shrill and almost single coil sounding when you turn the attack all the way right... no?
I believe the Boss SD-1 would sound better than the OD-1.
The Tone knob from the SD-1 would help to shape the amp tone much more.
While everyone has different opinions on tone, and as much as I love the SD1, I promise if you can get your hands on one of these silver screw OD1s that Ola has here (with the extremely rare quad op amp), you might reconsider. It adds a particularly unique type of bark to a high gain amp that I've never been able to replicate with anything else. It's not like an SD1 that adds gain, it actually makes your amp work hard as if youve cranked the preamp but without the added volume. There is almost zero fizz especially in the high mids, which the TS9 and SD1s tend to have. Try one out if you ever get the chance to. Unfortunately they fetch stupid amounts of cash (like 400+) for them, but they were THE pedal to have in the studio for almost every metal player in the 80s to get massive headroom on the track without the extra hair and fizz.
Or just get the JHS Bonsai
Traduz essa conversa aí mano Leonardo 🤣😂
man I needed this video so bad, a ton of thanks !
That mxr sugar drive was gnarely! Damn that thing chugged liked a freight train haha. That one was my favorite that bottom end sounded nice and smooth
I personally use an Electro Harmonix Soul Food for my overdrive, which lends itself well to punk rock. Not sure about how well it works for metal, though.
heard lot of good things about Soul food, I will probably buy it shortly ...
@@stanislavmigra it's a good little pedal, I'll say that. Even at full drive it doesn't break up your sound too much, allowing a lot of clarity in the signal, which I like. It also has to do with how you have your amp and the pedal itself dialed in I personally dial in my tone on my amp, an Acoustic Lead Series G20, as on the "lead" stage, gain on 0, volume varies, bass 5, mid 10, treble 5, mid shift on, and then on the pedal, I like the volume and tone knobs on 5 and the drive on 10, but that just works for me. Hope this helps!
"A lot of people own Rectifiers"
*sad look towards my Bugera Trirec*
Never heard of the channel but as soon as i heard that riff i was like wait ive heard this guy before. Cool to see the face to the strings
some very conqouring dystopia style riffs in there, love it, need to see some more ola,Keith and Jeff colabs
Is it just me, or IBANEZ TS9 isn't even turned on?
Станислав Гордеев thats how it goes with tubescreamers
I thought the same! Red led not visible but maybe just camera angle....
@@johnmurphy5739 ts9 LEDs pretty much aren't visible unless you're straight over them.
@@johnmurphy5739 you have to be right over them to see the light
It's just you.
I liked mooer and fortin
Hola Ola. finally subscribed. Uffff. Boss y Horizon sounded crushing. Definitely cut through the crowd! Awesome riffing! 🤟
The grind sounded the best to my ears. No bottom end drop out, yet stayed chunky. I thought the pink drive was almost up to par with it.. Good shit, Ola!
The TS-9 sounded the cleanest...
SCIENCE
I think the Horizon Devices Precision Drive sounded the best, and would be the best option for technical metal but, I also loved the aggressive tone from the Fortin Grind! I would probably use the Fortin to boost a lower gain amp.
Got to be the precision drive! Sound awesome! I use it in all my videos!
how come all sounds the same?
LMFAO More OD's!!!! Ever try the Airis effects Savage drive?
Here i really loved the sound of the Boss od-1 i own a Precision Drive pedal myself and with my Peavey 6505 it SOUNDS so amazing but on my Engl Fireball the Ibanez Tubescreamer fits the sound of that amp more still both amp with both pedal sounds good, but the amp says alot about the sound for the Overdrive Pedal.
Btw amazing video Ola been waiting so long for a good comparison video with OD pedals
Love that riff. I like the Sugar Drive. So sweet
Ola, OLAAAAAAAAAAA..!!!!!!! Add a clap counter on the screen, we want to know how many times you've clapped throughout the video till the end. Also, a great drinking game. Ola - the clappererrrr..
someone get me a tab on what riff hes playing. sounds sick. that his solo?
I really like that you used the Boss OD-1 which you can’t even get anymore except for those 40th anniversary box sets which are pretty expensive. Wish they would make them again, they really add a unique character to your tone. Of course it’s the one I like the most. I have a 1981 version coming this week. This gets me more pumped about giving it a go. Great demo.
Dude, that hot pink overdrive took me by surprise, I definitely am gonna get one
Precision drive seemed to have the most clarity .
Dare I say: the most... precision. hahahahehehe hohoho
@@mandrias hohoho
I think TS-9 doesn't need any knobs.
I liked the Mxr sugar Drive. It was clean and could fine tweak tone. The controls seemed to be honed to the sweet spots and not have all the over the top boosts that is not usable for most of us.
That Precision Drive is just absolute excellence when it comes to an OD pedal.
I still use my old TS9DX with my Laney Ironheart though, just because it's a wonderful pedal.
the only thing overdrive does on Distorted guitar amps is Cut a bit of lows : its just a fancy high pass filter: thats it all pedals will do exactly the same thing its just EQ shaping pre gain
They all sound very similar. But I feel like the Fortin has to win because it sounds sick with 1 damn knob! But that being said, it's 2019 we shouldn't have to use a drive pedal to tighten up an amp.
Even in the 90s you could buy a Savage ;)
5150 and savage have been around for a while. Not sure why the rest aren’t up to the task yet.
Guitar amp builders should just add an adjustable input gain. Bass amps have had it for years! Still, that wouldn’t sell pedals 😁
Tank Jon yup
mesa mark doesn't need a boost. plus it's been around since the 70s :p
Always love your sound sir...
Thanks for including us!
This is a good video. What I'm going to do is test my opinions by listening through this a second time tomorrow without watching it. I think I know what I like the most right now, but what if I'm wrong and completely full of shit?
My final top 3 favorites are Sugar Drive, Precision Drive, and Fortin Grind. That is in order of the chances of me buying one. The Sugar Drive proved that giving myself a blind test was the right thing to do, because it went from not catching my attention to being my #1 choice.
The BOSS OD-1 had a little bit of a digital-like fizz to it that I didn't like and cut too much of the bottom end. The TS-9 sounds like a tubescreamer (I use and OD-808 myself so basically same pedal, different name slapped on it). The Pure Boost sounded fine, not amazing, just fine. It did have a bit of high end hiss that I didn't like. The MXR sounded decent, but definitely wouldn't use it myself. Sounds too compressed. The Hot Pink drive sounded special, better than I expected. Would like to give it a swing myself, had a very pleasant mid frequency. The Precision Drive sounded great, tightest of all of them. Fortin Grind sounded fine, not my cup of tea. Overall I'd say if you want a more old school inspired tone go try the TS-9 or the Hot Pink drive, if you want a very modern and tighter than police handcuffs kind of tone try the Precision Drive.
Digital fizz on the od-1?
@@dantredogborsa7048 it's what I experienced through my monitors. It reminded me of something like a Line 6 spider or a digital effects processor.
@@CheesybiscuitStudios wow..never heard something like that about a OD-1 hehehe...
Fizz doesn't mean it's digital. Fuzz also not digital. Fuzzfizz is human
Fun fact, the TS series is a copy of the Boss OD-1, with the inclusion of a tone knob and because of patent reasons, switched to symmetrical clipping. Otherwise, basically the same circuit!
Nice to see and hear the tremoverb again :)
I agreed with you, Ola. The Precision Drive gives you the most tonal options and lets you really hone in on what you want. But the Grind sounded really good despite the lack of "tweakability". The others were all a bit ho hum for mine. Great vid, mate.
Mmm.. I'll stick with my HM-2 thank you very much. For metal.. ^^
I just press like first and then watch the video...
me too
all im gonna say, Boss Ge7 used as a boost is amazing for this application. where you seem to just be pushing the level into the amp higher instead of using any real gain from the pedals
The ts9 is my fav. Simple, sounds great and makes anyone’s pedal board more green.
Cheaper more better!!!!! Hahaha
No Maxon?
Well technically speaking, the TS9 is a Maxon pedal since they made them for Ibanez.
Ola Englund truuuuu
@@OlaEnglund Technically speaking the TS9 didn't seem to be on for this test, though! :ο
@@dirtyharry1881 with a ts9 you have to be looking dead over the led to actually see it because the actual led is inside the pedal and just a clear diffuser is mounted to the chassis, unlike the others that have leds mounted to the chassis
@@bryand.5240 Point taken, I stand corrected, cause I don't have it.
There is so much overdrive on the Boogie that I can barely hear the pedals alter the tone. The horizon P was the only one that tightened up the sound to make it better in my humble opinion. Your new Boogie is stunning looking, I must say. It rocks and I agree with your 2nd pedal choice also.
That is1 of the sickest riffs I have heard from you ola
hmm they all sounds same...hm...
Butt! the amp is already saturated to begin with.
That's how overdrives are used for metal, for the most part. It's mostly for the hi-pass and some grit sometimes.
That's why this video is really helpful actually.
You're thinking of distortion pedals
Cool! Maybe a distortion comparison video also, preferred metal distortion pedals or something ^^ Love your videos! Cheers from Norway 🤘🏻
great video ! I love the yellow
SO no real difference at all....guitar players kid themselves about the differences in gear. All the while the companies laugh all the way to the bank...HAHAHA
Paul Kwaai Im just using a 20 dollar behringer overdrive it sounds great.
Nowadays, we're slowly walking into a "singularity". Most amps and pedals now sound very close, with minor differences in feel and some tonal nuances... Just get two amps: a british and an american voiced one, with as tonal shaping controls as possible (KSR, for example...), an OD or an EQ pedal, and you're pretty much set, basically speaking. At least in my opinion...
If you think the precision drive sounded like the others then yikes... lol
I love the TS9 and Precision Drive so much I put them both on my board!
I think it’s interesting at 1:20 you touched the pedal you most likely were thinking. Subconsciously or not that was cool as hell! I love the TS9DX. PLEASE REVIEW IT!!!
I've been really happy with my Amptweaker Tight Drive Jr. Has different eq and tight settings and a freaking awesome noise gate all into one pedal.
the Boss overdrive sounds gnarly as hell, but man. dude, bro. dude, the Fortin grind. so, so so good
Hej Ola! Gillar dina videor!!!
#1 Horizon Devices Precision Drive.
The attack on that pedal is perfect.
Hey Ola, When are you and Mario going to do another PanterA song? You two are the best!
To my ear, Mooer and Alexander were the clearest and most versatile... And wow, it's a pleasant surprise that this riff will be on your album, we've been hearing it for a pretty long time already =)
By the time it hits UA-cam and gets compressed I think many of the subtleties are hard to detect, but I like the smooth character of the TS-9 and the bite from the Sugar Drive. Mostly I think it depends on how it feels while YOU the player uses it. Thanks for the shootout!
Awesome video. I felt that the precision drive took away some low end gain which I would miss in my sound. Overall I liked the Fortin Grind, the Tubescreamer and the Boss was pretty cool too
The Boss OD-1 seems like a pedal that allows you to maintain a lot of the amplifier’s natural tone all the while adding the compression and the upper midrange grunt you need in order to achieve the tight and percussive nature of Metal guitar playing with primarily passive pickups. I’d go as far as to say in front of an amp like a Dual Rectifier or a 6505 you can use it most effectively and efficiently by using the treble and presence on the amp to dial in the exact amount of bite you’re looking to get out of the amp.
I agree Ola, the Horizon sounded the best. I personally use the TS9, but may check that one out. Thanks for the review.
Im in it for the horizon!!
Love this rif( I remember it back from your 50 watt Satan video) and it’s nice to hear the full version in your Solo album 🙏. You should try the JHS strong mod Ibanez tube screamer in the future. It’s brutal!
To my ears the boss sounded closest to how i would have it. A lot of the other pedals seem to add a little mud in the low end and the ts9 and fortin seemed to take a little too much bottom end away for my taste. Great video as always Ola, cheers.
How convenient, I'm in the market for an OD pedal. Nice timing, Ola! ;)
