The take-away from all of this is, in spite of years jamming with Rob and Rabea, Lee still can't dial in a METAL sound to save his arse.🤣
I was going to say. Now let Jamie dial in the eqs too. With all the options that some of them had, he didn't experiment much.
yeah sucks in dialing :)
@@larrydj549 yeah without trying to be mean jamie isnt a very exciting or interesting host its like all he knows is generic cliche metallica vibes sometimes and he talks like his wife just left him for his dad half the time
@@Glamosapien that’s mean 😂
@@waitin4winter sorry the end of my comment even threw me off cause i forgot about it im surprised he didnt delete it .
“Mean but true “
5150 really is an awesome pedal. Built in gate is great
Ya this video really makes me want the 5150
I’m only 3 minutes into the video at this point but it’s set the bar pretty high! Love that sound
More pedals should have a gate....I got a full bore mxr it has one ,,it's great.
im looking for my first distortion pedal.
that 5150 looks like a no brainer for pedal to the metal genres right??
More pedals should have noise gates in em,,,I got a mxr full bore metal and its all you need,, with the gate pushed in.
For a man that has only ever talked about guitars and West Ham, Lee has a surprising amount of boxing knowledge.
London club rivalry is pretty serious stuff!
Loads of boxing knowledge but not a clue how to set a metal pedal lol
He didnt include Manny Pacquiao tho.
@@apuadofrancisco Or Ivan Drago.
Metal Zone isn't a pedal it's a way of life 🤘
Cringe
Dude, metal zone into a solid state amp as an eq slays
R u sure, cause I just bought this AND ITS A PIECE OF SHIT
@@Diego_Lemon16why ? I was just considering buying it
So is homelessness
Mike Tyson suffered a minor concussion when his eq was changed, and never fully recovered.
Funny enough, Lennox Lewis beat Mike Tyson in real life.
The reason the RAT sounds weird is because I think he's overloading the input (I'm guessing high-output pickups) which causes it to cut out like that. If he turned the volume down on his guitar it wouldn't sound like that.
I’m a bassist that doesn’t even use distortion and I still spent 40 mins watching this. Love your work guys!
Me too.
But you could try, i sometimes use Fuzz or Overdrive on Bass. But it's sort of hard to find a drive pedal which works fine on bass without loosing too much low end.
@@zwidawurzn9423 oh yeah, I’ve used OD and distortion many times. My first pedal was actually a ODB-3 lol. Heavy dirt is just not something I’ve really used for a long time, though I do like to add a bit of drive - currently using a Sick As into a Broadcaster for that, which are both guitar pedals really.
But yeah I’ve tried a lot of them over the years - I used a Russian big muff for quite a few years before we got the bass Big muff. Things are a lot better today. The early fuzz and distortion pedals are really the pedals that gave the idea that you can’t use guitar pedals for bass, as all those early ones just cut the bass and muddy the mids. But nowadays there’s so many dirt boxes that can handle bass frequencies, you’ve got loads of choice. It used to be a ‘bass’ distortion pedal would be one that didn’t cut the lows, now I would say it’s a distortion that has a clean blend really.
But yeah you could probably use a bunch of these for bass. I just don’t really use it nowadays.
@@zwidawurzn9423 The trick is to find a pedal that has a mix knob, cause then you can dial the wet/dry, to keep the low end.
@@zwidawurzn9423 also look into the Boss LS-2 or KMA tyler. Both offer ways of splitting the signal and allow to to leave one loop unaffected and the other tinkered with further before bringing them both together before sending it to the output.
I love how Lee completely ignores anyone else's opinion about how they want a pedal to sound and just goes with how he thinks it should 🤣
Not a criticism, makes me legitimately laugh 😆
Anything metal-oriented on Anderton's makes me laugh :)
@@reverendtos4271 well, it's not Lee and Pete's thing, no lol. But at least they acknowledge it.
@@reverendtos4271 their demos with Bea were the best.
I have the EVH 5150 Overdrive, it's a monster. The gate is the icing on the cake.
Yeah imo by far the best sounding pedal here.
I also like the boss metal core but it has a ridiculous amount gain. Everything more than just 2-3 in gain is almost unplayable
Most Metal guys dialing in their gain: As little as possible while still able to get chugs from palm mutes
Lee dialing in gain: Too gainy and compressed sounding? Turn it up even more
If you don't always automatically turn the gain up to max then I feel like you're not cut out to play metal 😅
That Proco Rat sounded broken lol.
Never heard a Rat sound like that before
That’s because no one who uses a rat, myself included, turns the filter all the way to the left. Filter should never go left of noon on a rat.
"Fast and Loud. Is there any other type?"
Yes - Slow and Loud! 😆
Or fast and quiet.
This required someone who knew how to dial in metal pedals and a player that knows how to ask for more adjustments like Chapman used to do.
I love the EVH it's a mainstay in my board for my "All Purpose Distortion"
But you guys left out my most favorite Metal pedal, The Revv G3!
i've checked the website but they don't have it in stock, only the G4 on pre-order and a G2 in store
but yes, those things are BRILLIANT for metal
Isn't G3 designed to be used in the loop as a preamp, and not in front of the amp?
@@LevoDesnoBre It does both brilliantly well. At the moment, I've got mine running into the front end, usually on the blue setting. It's awesome. Especially when boosted.
Tighter than a gnat's chuff..
@@theorc9098 Usually it doesn't get high praise in front, but I should try it and see for myself. It was in my narrow selection, but in the end I went with the Keeley Filaments (awesome pedal too), since I always use it in front of the amp.
@@LevoDesnoBre I've not used the keeley.
My set up is a Fender "the bends" compressor (always on) then a ceriatone centura (klon clone) into the G3. I only use the centua for a boost during solos, or if I want to get super tight but saturated with a chug.
I use a Blackstar HT stage 60 Metal.
Most often, I'll run through the clean channel, but sometimes channel 2, but with the drive low, at about 8 o'clock.
It's very "chunky" and, most importantly, is very clear in a band mix.
I've long realised that what sounds good on its own is very different when competing with snare, hi-hat and a bass.
I set the gain between 12 and 2 o'clock on the revv depending on the P.A.
It really has a ton of gain.
I appreciate how Jamie plays similar riffs throughout. It's a pedal comparison, not a masterclass in s*** I'll never be able to play 😏, and I just really appreciate that he gets that. 🙏🤘
If it ain't the good ole Swedish chainsaw HM-2, we fucken riot.
Well... The Friedman BE-OD Deluxe just won a metal pedal shootout on the low gain channel... :) ^^
That 5150 pedal has made every amp insanely awesome since I bought that thing! Even the Esteban practice amp my girl's dad gave her!
I have Rabea's pedal and a Metal Zone and I can confirm, they both sound great.
Same here! Testify!
Given your profile picture, you should get the 5150 next, right? 😄
Bought the 5150 a few years ago. This pedal also does great lower gain sounds into a clean amp as well. There is something magical about its attack and response. The Friedman is probably its closest competition. It certainly could go either way imho. Surprised the Angry Charlie didnt fair better. That one is certainly a great pedal too.
Great video guys…. Thank you.
Satisfying. Wish more channels would do metal pedal comparison like this
I've owned a standard BE-OD for the past couple years, never looked back. Before I purchased it, I was between that and the 5150 OD. For the first part of the shootout, I was afraid the 5150 was better than I remembered, but then the BE-OD came and I was like "nah, I made the right decision."
Are you able to get a good old school punk sound out of the Friedman BE-OD?
I was there with you. I have a Mesa Mark IV, but I wanted a different type of distortion without spending too much and wanted the 5150 OD for a long time (I had a 6505+ and love the type of distortion), but I found a used BE-OD deluxe for $200 and yeah, best purchase ever, the thing sounds just so damn close to the real deal. A friend of mine has a Friedman BE100 and we compared them. It obviously isn't the same, but it's super close and for the money, you can't go wrong.
@@MichtersRyefan yes, absolutely, just roll the gain down and you got it.
@@MichtersRyefan what Juan said. Also, there is an internal trim pot to adjust the overall gain. The gain knob at 0 usually has a good amount of overdrive running through so you can adjust the internal pot down in case you want to clean it up.
@@TheProgGuy I have the bridge pickup of the jimmy page humbucker set from Seymour. Then I have the Fralin 2%hotter tele bridge pup. And a jazzmaster neck pickup I'll be using the Friedman be od with. So I would imagine I can get whatever punk tone I want with his pedal. It's either the BE OD or the Buxom betty..
I love the boss metalzone! It needs to be set up correctly. It has narrow sweet spots to find first but then it‘s great. Plug in and wow won‘t happen. But it will if you eq it right
So many gallops 🤘🏽🎸 missed opportunity to include the REVV G3 but amazing lineup nonetheless. Impressed with the 5150 and the Walrus Audio
Same thought. Think the Revv G3 would have won
Also should have been the AT+ if a JHS pedal was in the lineup
I loved the Angry Charlie and the Metal Zone, but also the BE100 was great and of course the EVH
Wow! This really woke me up to how awesome the 5150 is again! It’s simple to use, sounds killer, and has built in gate and boost. It’s SO versatile. And with the gain down low, I’ve heard people getting a real good overdrive tone as well from it. Oh, and ot takes other pedals very good into it also!
It’s, dare I say, perfect! 🤘😝
Between the EVH & Friedman it's a question of cost
Jamie needs another Marshall on his left for stereo
this one was absolutely fantastic hope you make more this boxing match style!
32:19 I TOTALLY agree the Boss Metal Zone is a fantastic pedal! I'll admit I don't know much about pedals, but that was the first pedal I tried that I really fell in love with. It maybe isn't meant to be played with a single coil pick up guitar, but I got some awesome tones out of it with my Strat
Biffy Clyro's Simon Neil famously used a Metal Zone with a strat for years!
@@user-oy7gz5bf2h oh, very cool, I just looked up the video for "Black Chandelier" and they sound great! Also, he uses a red Strat like me lol
Friedman BE OD for me! Although 5150 is darn close…. I did try the JHS AC, it works well with a clipping pedal before it. But Friedman BE OD is so awesome through a pedal platform clean channel.
Great video and I like the format - all the boxing references were fun! However, I would have loved to hear a Revv G3 and Diezel VH-4 in this mix. I have the BE-OD Deluxe myself but I'm really impressed with the MXR 5150 here too.
Non-Metal player here - interesting to see/here what some metal players want in their sound and how to dial it up. I agreed with the comments made and the winners had a certain clarity that I liked.
The 5150 sounded really fantastic! I'll have to try that one when I get the chance.
just want to say you got yourself a really good guitarist there. been following Jamie for ages now, really relatable and cool guy!
also dont compare with WWE, be a real wrestling fan and support AEW 🤣
Enjoyed that alot. Please do winner stays on again, great concept. Glad rabea tone city was up there. Thank you.
All the metal tones sounded like crap to my ears but this guy hears it blind and picks out a Boss Metal Zone 👏
Great video I just miss here few pedals- Revv G3, Abasi Pathos and Bogner Ecstasy Red Mini
did you all know hulk holgan started out as a musician. he was playing bass in a band when he was discovered. you can find pictures on line
The BE deluxe blue channel does have a lower gain circuit but it does depend on how the internal trim pots are set and the gain knobs set lower you can definitely tell, high gain not so much again depending on the trim pots. Cheers!
Plus: With the exact same settings, the green channel sounds a bit scooped from what I can hear at home. Was also mentioned in a few review videos I have seen/heard. Maybe it has something to do with the amp here, cause I couldn't hear it in this shootout.
Haha Jamie you went exactly the same way as I did over the years: I was looking for a pedalboard that could do it all and the EVH 5150 Distortion was on there most of the time until I found the Mooer Fried-Mien which essentially is the sound you were going for in the end. With a tubescreamer in front it sounds even tighter and better.
yeh totally!
I bought a tight metal and immediately sold all my distortion pedals. It is the best of the best!
I was torn between the 5150 OD and the BE-OD Deluxe until I tried them both and the BE-OD is superior in every way, except for the built in gate. The BE-OD is way more flexible and versatile. The 5150 sounds great, but it's a one trick pony and it does that one trick incredibly well, but the BE-OD can also do that trick and many more.
I really have to get my hands on the deluxe. I had the standard version, and it was like bees in a box. For metal though, my reference is still the G3.
@Xyrium the deluxe has the same circuit as the standard. Will sound the same.
@@jimx1696 the extra channel on the deluxe has a different voicing
One of these days I am going to get my passport renewed and fly to the UK to show Lee how to set up a Metal Zone. XD
I mastered my Metal Zone setup a while ago. 🚮
I've been following Jamie slays since 2017 and I'm so damn happy to see him here. He's moving on up. \m/
Fast and Loud is there any other type
*Doom Metal has entered the chat*

@@JAF2991 yeah Wurm gonna Wurm
They should have included the Diezel VH4. I have the BE-OD Deluxe and VH4-2 and I thought I preferred the BE-OD, but I've been liking the Diezel more lately. It has a lower noise floor (the BE-OD is pretty noisy) and more bottom end.
i'm sure next time they'll do it your way
>Volume almost maxed.. "Lotta compression there" lol yup. To get a smooth metal distortion you usually want to up the gain and turn down the volume.
I think the problem was the amp volume was too low so Lee kept having to put the volume/level way up past halfway
If you are a beginner or on a budget, the HM300 is truly a great pedal.
Don't just do the "chainsaw" sound with all the knobs maxed. As long as you keep the bass and mids past 12 o'clock, you can get a range of heavy tones.
I had one, and after 5 uses the cheap plastic bastard broke. I've seen wet paper bags with better structural integrity.
@@Broccoli_Highkicks That's a shame man. I've had mine for 2+ years now and no issues, but I can definitely see that happening. Fortunately they are cheap.
I’ve got the Behringer Super Fuzz SF300 and it sounds great, it’s perfect for that old Electric Wizard tone
I was impressed with that one. Especially since you can pick it up for $30.
The Friedman BE-OD pedal ( the single channel , smaller one ) is a flat out killer. I can't really see too many metal players ( beyond guys that are just going for completely over the top death metal ) not at least enjoying the tones they get out of Friedman stuff. I run mine into the front end of a little 15 watt fender basebreaker head into a 2x12 and it's amazing.
In one of my past heavier bands, I (the bass player), showed the BE-OD to both guitar players and they're like "it's not a distortion, it's an overdrive, it says right there on the case." They're both under versed in the world of good guitar tones, so I can't really blame them for not knowing what a good distortion pedal sound like :)
Be OD is a must, the EVH and the tight metal pro are killer too.
I wish the Laney Ironheat pedal was in there. Thats my half stack setup and I love it. Never tried that pedal though. I've been looking for a good pedal to record distortion. I've been using a POD forever, for headphone type playing and recording. All the pedals sound so fuzzy. Like there's no body to it. In this video, I think the Friedman sounded the best.
Grab yourself a Mooer GE200 for headphone playing. The cab sims are absolutely brilliant! No fuzz, and you can dial in exact replica sounds so easily. From full Marshall stacks to dime'd Plexis and 5150's. Best guitar accessory I've ever bought
@@DizzyWombat Excellent! I will totally check that out. Thank you 🎸🎵🤟🤟
I purchased the Revv G3 over the EVH 5150 Overdrive. Friedman sounds amazing too!
Revv G3 is an amazing pedal
@@zwidawurzn9423 G3 lasted a week on my board. Not enough mid range,
@@paulgibbs6831 Really? I mean the G3 is basically mids only.
I believe that this is the absolute best video for beginners to learn about pedal choices. The blind test with an experienced guitar player 🤘. Unfortunately for beginners is that they don’t have the luxury of testing different pedals in this manner, who knows this might be better for them anyway for the art of creativity.
Where was the Diezel VH4 & Revv G4?
The EVH is still a fav of mine but a few of those like the Friedman were awesome.
There needs to be a video of someone teaching Lee how to get the Best Metal tone out of a Metalzone.
Great video! Would have loved to see some Revv though.
very well presented, thank you.
Great video, i'm slightly biased as i've got a 5150 pedal. Was the Friedman BE running as well as it could be? It needs an 18V power supply but you just swapped the power cable from the previous pedal which i'm assuming was 9V.
O Metal Zone nessa Versão Waza.
Está bem Feroz o som.
Bom trabalho em avaliar esse pedal.
Shoutout to the Wild Fro. Got that on my board and it’s a beast!
Well, always fun to have the only high gain pedal I own be crowned the winner, lol.
The mountain sounded badass when you started playing paranoid. Can definitely tell what they were going for with that pedal
Love the 🥊 analogy. More of that
This was really more a best thrash metal pedal. People who don't listen to metal don't understand the wide diversity of tones on offer across its various subgenres.
The 5150 overdrive is awesome, Angry Charlie is great too.
Victory Kraken pedal, Ksr Ceres, Diezel Vh4, Revv G3 pedals must to be in this comparision..... The 5150, the friedman beod and the tightmetal are awesome pedals!
Yeah, I have a tightmetal and it’s superb, but the Diezel Vh4 definitely needs to be in the mix. Maybe a Bognor too
I have an electroharmonix metal muff. The one with six knobs and both the bypass and boost buttons. Try that against the evh and the Friedman be100.
If u gave the EVH more gain and bass when it first got kicked out it wouldn’t have u can get so many different tones out of it. Such a great pedal 🔥
I would like to see a 2.0 of this with the Kraken pedal this time.
Where's the Revv G4? Can't have a metal distortion shootout without Revv IMO
Love the sound of the rat but it has a particular application usually a pedal for doom and stoner rock guys not so much tight metal sounds, its fuzzy character is its strength and weakness.
I like Lee’s approach here, all the tenuous analogies made it more entertaining. They gave clues away or at least would have influenced the perception of quality/reputation, but the results don’t matter anyway do they? It’s whatever, it’s the journey not the destination. More fun this way than a ‘fairer’ but more po-faced tight-lipped shootout.
I have the evh overdrive and it's one badass pedal and it's my favorite
Damn, I guess I need to give the EVH a try...
Quite a fun video hope Jamie can show up again sometime
Love Anderson’s UA-cam channel. Love JamieSlays UA-cam channel. Both of you together are AWESOME! 🤘
There's a few pedals that do VERY well in all these type of challenges.
The 5150 always delivers a solid quality tone.
Friedman BE OD.
And crazy enough... the Boss always bring back a certain tickle from metal people. I think it doesn't sound as good as the two above, but it's soooo relatable and something every metal person has heard in famous recordings...
Video so awesome and useful!! thank you :)
Good Video,I like heavy metal ,thought about buying a guitar and a pedal, now I know what to get...
Keeley Filaments should have been in this. Incredible pedal with clarity to boot.
I'm surprised not one person talked about how Lee "took the balls" out of the EVH halfway through to match another pedals eq and brought it's awesomeness down a notch. If he had kept it the same since the beginning it probably would have won the whole thing.
Also, no Krakken pedal?!?
Not only that but he tweaked the BE a lot more to make it sound as good, told guitar guy that the BE was his pedal of choice and never touched the EVH again. The whole comparison between those two just felt biased and dirty and that's not something I usually get from Anderton's videos.
@@StormdriverOne lol, I don't know if I want to hate on them THAT badly - especially since Lee was saying for the rest of the video he really thought the EVH was better. You're right though, he barely touched the EVH, if at all.
@@EventHorizonPrdctns I don't think it was intentional but that comparison just doesn't sit well with me. After Lee told him that was the pedal he chose, I knew it was over.
@@StormdriverOne I think Jamie was leaning towards the BE and Lee wasn't so sure so he played around to see if there was a sound that Lee thought was better. I wasn't a fan of the format my self. Should've done a tournament knockout style rather than a challenger format
Andertons, you really need to pull a boss line selector pedal off the shelf to do the a/b switching on these videos. Then you can give the player control of the switching and level without seeing the pedal you are testing.
Captain, you have gotten very good at dialing in pedals quickly !
Nice pedaling
Brother I don't know about that.
Did you watch the video?
No
The Boss "Metalcore" is one pedal I really like and have owned in the past, but is almost never included in comparison/shootout videos for some reason. why the lack of love?
This brings a whole new meaning to the term "pedal to the metal"
Top channel of the BEOD deluxe has a more aggressive voicing than the bottom channel. They aren’t the same. And it’s also recommended to run it at 18v for more clarity and harmonics.
actually with 18v has a bit less clarity, but more headroom. I run mine at 18v for that extra headroom
@@themaggot8 I find at 18v I can turn the gain down just slightly and lower the noise floor a bit. It seemed “clearer” to me.
My best metal pedals are Boss ML-2 Metal Core and Keeley Filaments. None of them are in this shootout, I just wanted to tell my preferences
The beod deluxe has an internal pot for both channels and according to dave himself the blue channel is kind of lower gain than green channel. I had mine but need to sell for extra funds, wanted to get a beod deluxe again.
Clearly more gain with the green channel.
Jesus Christ. Captain even made the 5150 sound bad 🤣
I like this new Hairy Man with tonewood in his ears -- he is Metal AF 🤘💪
Thought the 5150 sounded most crispy and articulate on the solo riffs > probably due to the noise gate
---- the FRO sounded pretty good considering budget pedal
--- Amptweaker looks nuts - I want one
hha thank you! :D i hope to come back soon
@@JamieSlays Nice - subbed - PEACE
I was just listening and as soon as he said hm-2 and blend, I was like "Guardian" out loud at work. Then he described the picture on it haha
Haha when lee said “pig squeal” I couldn’t stop laughing
I played an 8 string Strandberg through a Mesa Lone Star using the Walrus Eras Distortion and it was the best distortion pedal I’ve ever heard through a tube amp. It sounded very natural.
Jamie been all over the place lately! Good for him 🤘
I'm currently playing through the Metal Zone MT and I like it.....BUT I want more distortion. Mind you my amp is a shitty Fender M80. My 4x12 cab is the EVH 5150 Iconic. I was playing though the MXR Fullbore Metal. After this video I really want the EVH pedal.
Needed to throw some KHDK in the mix. Mesa boogie pedals and Suhr Riot
Amp Tweaker, 5150, Friedman, properly dialed in, with the Marshall's controls massaged would all be excellent pedals for playing metal. My words of wisdom are to find an Amplifier that meets your tone needs without an external drive pedal, and you'll be much happier.
Gotta love Andertons shootout videos
The Wampler Dracarys is a pretty good pedal too.
