    I experienced a hard pedal yesterday. I just replaced my vacuum pump a month ago. I wonder of it is bad already. I'm going to perform these tests you suggest.
    Thanks for posting.

      I always recommend Motorcraft parts on these old Fords especially the vac pump, if you find your pump is bad go motorcraft.

    I have the same issue. It started as an intermittent stiff pedal, usually fine at higher RPMs, then it became stiff all the time. That new constant stiffness was accompanied by a new belt/pulley noise.
    I do have vacuum but it’s “choppy” would be the best way I could describe it. Assuming that combined with the grinding/clinking noise coming from the pump is indicative of a bad pump.

      The vacuum pump may have a failing check valve internally.

      What did the pulley sound like. My brake pedal all of a sudden got really hard to press then a small chatter came from the engine I got scared it was injectors

      @hermeztorres5867 the vacuum pump can make noise, usually the diaphragm inside fails but bearing failure is also somewhat common. Use a mechanic's stethoscope to isolate the noise and replace that part.

      @@RogueWrenching would the sound of a bad vac pump get faster/louder as you speed up then slower and quieter as you slow down because that’s what happens to me along with the external hard brake pedal

      @hermeztorres5867 Yes it could. Feel free to email me a video and I can maybe give you a better direction RogueWrenching@gmail.com

    I replaced the vacuum pump/pully about 5 months ago (because the pully was jacked) and my brakes became incredibly stiff with a lack of vacuum a few days ago. I thought it was the brake booster, however my AC went out today. Can a faulty brake booster cause a loss of AC? Thank you in advance for your help!

    • @RogueWrenching
      @RogueWrenching  2 роки тому

      Technically no, but the hvac in these trucks is run off vacuum, so if it only blows out the defrost vents that's a pretty good indicator you've got a vacuum issue. But the AC compressor / system that actually gets cold is unrelated to the vacuum system. But if that cold isn't getting put the dash vents that could be a vacuum issue.

    What if I only have have a hard brake pedal at idle? But the booster works when higher rpm? Driving around parking lot, hard pedal. On the highway get a few good applications before it goes hard.

    • @RogueWrenching
      @RogueWrenching  Рік тому

      Check the check valve on the booster. It's also possible your vacuum pump is weak, connect a vacuum guage to the vacuum manifold while driving, and see if you run out of vacuum at idle. Also, if your booster has a leak, this can also present in the same fashion.

      @@RogueWrenching So I did some checking today. Check valve is working. The pump is working but pretty weak at idle much stronger at 2000rpm (had the wife Rev it while I checked). Will try to track down a vacuum garage Monday.

      @@esTaleCSGO yup it was a bad vacuum pump. I guess it could make some pressure at high rpm but none at idle. Pretty easy fix. Need a puller to remove the pulley from the pump though.

    So what if you do have suction but the A/C is also acting up? Would it then be the solenoid that has gone bad?

    My vacuum pump is only putting out alil but I can feel it coming out of the check valve but it’s not much. Is that a sign of the pump, or check valve or should I replace both

      Most often proportioning valves don't cause a hard unassisted feel, they cause reduced braking because when they fail you're still using the brake booster but only braking one axle (Front or Rear), the RABS valve can cause a sinking pedal, but then a master cylinder can cause a sinking pedal also.
