As one of those Canadians that's fortunate enough to pull in 30 inch Pike all day long, it's really nice to see there's a good healthy population of fish in urban rivers like this.
Wouldn't necessarily call them "healthy"... Its New Jersey after all
If you can't eat the fish, the system isn't healthy. Kind of shows just how far our standards have fallen that we are excited about the mere existence of fish in some rivers.
So glad to finally see this episode, which felt inevitable for HS back in the day. Love this new show and can’t wait for new episodes.

I grew up in newark, NJ. I moved to and live in Alaska and never looked back. If theres one thing NJ taught me, is i didnt realize how unfree i was until moved away.
Went back to visit once. Got a ticket for driving down a dirt track to go fishing at the musconetcong. I vowed to never step foot there again.
I drove my ATV to work today in Alaska. Id be arrested for doing that in NJ

Rules, Restrictions, taxes, laws, massive amounts of people crammed together.
To be able to get on an ATV with a gun over my shoulder and drive 20 miles into the woods and fly fish a beautiful alpine mountain creek all to myself sure beats pulling up to a designated parking spot on Manasquan river and pulling ticks off me at the end of the day.
Im from that place. I know it. When you leave it, only then do you realize how much personal freedom was missed.
@@cliffisfree100 I couldn't agree with you more, I was trying to say there's no reason to look back once you leave something as depressing as New Jersey. They destroyed all my hunting fishing areas. I left 16 years ago and I'll never look back

I LOVE the Passaic! For all the reasons you mentioned. Grimy, not heavily trafficked and always a new challenge or curveball.

NEW JERSEY FOREVERRRR
This is my neighborhood, lived and worked around this river most of my life and have never fished it due to the pollution. Turns out the sport is worth it. Now I need a partner with a boat, fishing off the shore is a no-go.

I fished this river, the exact same spots! Get skunked most of the time. For lodging may I suggest the Gem Motel, or La Mirage Motor Inn on Rt. 1 in Rahway (they have hourly rates).

Joe, being you're from Jersey, have you had a chance to fish Adirondack State Park in upstate NY? my favorite fishing comes out of Tupper Lake, one of the best ice fishing destinations in the northeast. Smallies, pike, walleye, lake trout, largies, etc. Feel like you would absolutely love it
I've fished the Au Sable and a few other streams up there. Also Champlain. It's definitely a region I'd like to spend more time in!

Weird to stock a river that is so polluted. You'd think they'd address the illness before curing symptoms. In Amsterdam and Rotterdam there's 40" pike and 30" zander in the canals in the city centre.

@@phoult37 I figured that from the video. Rotterdam used to be the largest commercial port in the world and still is one of the largest. With vast areas of petrochemical industry. The estuary used to be seriously polluted. Somehow they cleaned their act up and nowadays it is one of the best spots for European bass and even the native sea run brown trout have returned.

Ive caught tons of fish in the passaic, definitely dont want to eat it unkess you have good health insurance and are content with meeting your maker. Stripers run all the way up to the dam in garfield, big catfish, pike, bass, smallmouth, even some bowfin if yiure lucky

There might be one or two left in the Tuckaseegee around Bryson City. Maybe in Fontana Lake. I stopped at a gas station between Bryson City and Franklin years ago and there was an absolute monster Tiger Musky hanging on the wall behind the counter. Best of luck.

What the hell… I just learned that what we call pickerel up in Canada aren’t even pickerel. I was like “why is he calling that fish a pickerel?” Turns out he knows what he’s talking about.
This watches like reading a great magazine article about a destination journey, only this isnt the generic BaHaMAs, but a place with character.
The biggest pike ive caught out of the passaic are much further down river. And the area has easy access.
