I m from SJ and fish all of these locations. This maybe a parody but this character is absolutely based on several ppl that exist. And the lingo with the nicknames absolutely are based on real people. I fish with plugs and fish technical but always have bait and chunks on hand just as a back up. But when u go on that Ac jetty more than half are using chunks and there are always guys just like him. This is highly accurate.

I think the best joke, is that it's not really a joke. Yes it's an actor, however he's portraying an actual surf fishing legend(obviously embellished, but also maybe not) The guy did his research. He also probably personally knew the guy, or guys the character is based off. Great job of paying homage to the time and region. These are fishermen the likes of which will never be seen again. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the nicknames are real, but that's beside the point. The comedy and made up parts are just a tool used to explain the truths of striper fishing. To this day, most of the biggest fish caught come from a beach, at night, and off live or chunk bait. The truth is you don't need top shelf gear, and a tackle box filled with 25 dollar lures. The only thing needed to catch the fish of a lifetime is dedication, patience, and good chunkin buddy.
