- It’s been more than 20 years since invasive snakeheads showed up in U.S. waters. Despite early fear about how devastating they would be, time and science have proven otherwise. Still, they are arguably the most hated fish in the country. But do you really understand what you’re hating? Joe Cermele joins snakehead zealot Grant Alvis in Virginia to prove that since we can’t beat them, let’s have fun catching (and eating) them.

Watching Grant and his crew catch these fish over the past few years has fully hooked me with the snake coolaid. Great episode and glad to see some focus on sneakhead this year with this series and Das Boat. The OG kayak fishing crew represented in proper fashion.
Thanks John!!!
The drone footage of the 11# catch is among the best fishing footage I've seen. Congrats on the catches and props to your cameraman.
As a professional Drone videographer I can say it’s below amateur at best 😂 what a wasted opportunity 🤦🏻♂️ He filmed a prime subject but with a high quality drone not a cheap mavic and a real camera that could have been an award winning clip
@@jeremyk5414 got to say that sounds a little bitter there.
Where are your award winning videos posted please? I'd like to see what you consider the difference between your pro stuff and this shows less than amateur stuff.
That drone footage of the big fight was ridiculous. So cool! I would have loved to hear the colorful commentary.
plus the music is awesome!
This was real deal Meateater material! Nice job on this one Joe
Nahhhh.... nobody ate any meat... maybe a McD's fillet o' fish on the drive home!
@@brngrofdeth they made tacos you fool
@@kdkulhanek Steve stopped in at Taco Bell for tacos... better than the McD's? You be the judge or the fool!
Virginia offers such a wide variety of species to target and Grant has taken full advantage of what the state has to offer to hone his skills. Grant has grown into an extremely dedicated and accomplished angler and is a fantastic representative of the sport. Great episode. Next up is Grant getting Joe and the crew in kayaks to target big striper in the Chesapeake.
Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate it!! And I agree... maybe some big Chesapeake redfish are in order...
@@GAs06tC We are always down with a trip no matter the place or target species. Big reds would be fun.
Best fishing video i think ive ever watched. Well done, spot on editing and music, a good message, and great fish! Love it.
"Excuse me sir. Are your testicles ok?" What a great gar eat that was amazing. Please more metal music this makes my heart happy. Nice double digit snakehead!
Big Snakehead Dreams! This was a dope episode! Great camera work Thomas! Way to shake that frog off the old nuts
God damn Joe Cermele this is some fishing tv well done!!
The drone shot when you stuck that 11 was heavy! Perfectly documented.
They are some pissed off fish when they get hooked.
Waited 7 years to bust the 10 nut and get an 11 and a 10.25 w/in 30 mins of each other. That's an epic day by any definition.
Fast forward 10 years and we'll have a video series of the Meateater crew heading up the Mekong River in a patrol boat to locate Joe's snakehead compound...
In for that trip.
The horror...the horror.....
@@benkizerboughner9678 Classic
Tigers. Just stay in the boat Joe.
@@jonathanmccormack3973 Never get out of the boat.
I love seeing dudes doing things different. Taking a Flats Boat up the river in Virginia, amazing.
These have to be some of the coolest looking fish out there! Love their coloration, fin, and body form. Really sweet footage there crew, awesome episode.
Your best episode yet, Joe. That was awesome!
Beauty fish Joe! Grant is now my favourite UPSer.
Lmao will Joe’s walleye slander ever end?
"Its also not some creepy Jim Jones shit!" Bahahaha 😆 AWESOME INTRO! Can't wait to watch the actual fishing.
Best episode yet. If I weren't out in Montana I would certainly be joining you in the Cult of the Snake
Joe, this ep is some of your best work yet friend. Keep it up.
Lol “10 lb snakehead, not that big of a deal” 🤣 A well played ending my man 💪🏻
Definitely one of the coolest looking fish out there.
Grant’s a good dude, glad you guys hooked some nice fish!
Ive been fishing snakehead in jersey for 9 years. And I'm also into large mouth bass. I have not seen any decrease in my bass and I can say I love my snakehead fishing. I keep some here and there but I release alot of them in hope they get bigger. I also hope that everyone starts to realize that the snakehead isn't a threat too the bass population.
Well lets keep them post coming was a Great video.
@Meateater please work with the Scott Rea Project to get him involved with American wildlife. The most passionate butcher from the UK. He has style and PASSION for bringing field to table.
It’s gnarly to have some great fishing videos with awesome music! Great job Joe! 🤘🏽
Caught about a 12 pound northern while stationed in Korea, its what rejuvenated my love for fishing
I made it my profile picture for some evidence and the nostalgia this video gave me
been waiting to see this episode since seeing it on IG this summer... makes me want to get after a few of these.
Its not worth your time
Over here in their native range, snakeheads get the muskie treatment; the big native freshwater predator that only gives you about one shot a day, pursued by a cult following operating on catch-and-release principles willing to work their asses off for that one massive eat.
Is it a lake or river fishery in Korea?
@@briancook4248 both but mostly reservoirs. Still or slow-flowing water, shallow water, vegetation, use of topwater frogs, etc.
Haven’t caught any but have seen them on failed attempts.
How in the actual F does this channel not have over 1million subs. Its unbelievable
That contour pattern looks awesome!
Fully avowed fellow cultist here 👏😁
Congratulations on those snakeheads, that is some great fishing.
The music: *grindcore zombie apocalypse breakdown chaos*
The narration: "We saw a beaver dam"
Love your vids Joe, keep them coming!
Great video and great fish
God's Blessings on all your adventures
lets go joes the man! great ep
Hands down, best fishing show ever and best fishing show host ever.
Awesome video man!!!
You already did this. Got it. Snake Head .... GOOD!
I'm hooked can't wait for my first 10lber
As a VA resident, I say enjoy catching them but we should NOT be releasing them. I totally understand that it hasn’t had as many of the negative effects we thought but it’s still invasive.
I really enjoyed this episode! Thanks! Send a link where I can contribute to getting Grant a real net, please?
It's already been replaced! Lol
@@GAs06tC That's good! I will say it was pretty great watching you guys try to get those monster fish into the tiny net!
0:34 whaaaat! Trust the science!!!!!!!!
Hes just a UPS driver with good credit lol glad to know people eat em. Looks like you filet like trout and salmon
Great scene at the beaver dam.
Such a quality show
Joes storytelling style comes through from hook shots to this masterpiece of fish porn
JC is the best fishing host in the game.
Crazy how quick people got on board with snakeheads but still hate on Carp. They ain’t going anywhere, and they’re absolutely blast to catch. Get onboard.
We’re is Steven miss his video a lot the way he explain an do hunting is on another level …..GG
Absolutely love the show. Actually, all things Meateater . Having watched the 'genious', and talented gifts you all put out for us all to enjoy, relate to. I can't thank you enough. You all truly put your heart and soul into it. Love it. Joe , man, you were meant for tv dude. For real. Diverse. Educated. Whitty. HILLLLARIOUS. Can't thank you all enough. I am, a true fan.
This guy and or Meat Eater should link up with Oz Bangkokhooker. Hard-core Snakehead guy and travels when possible for fishing adventures.
Getting into some larger gar on custom flys made for them would be some great fun. Could probably get away with sneaking up on them while they are "rolling" during the spawn.
I love Joe. He looks like someone in a New Jersey fishing nut costume.
That looks like proper fun
Listened to your podcast today and you said the snakehead video was available. Watched it tonight and it was great glad you got on with a fellow lunatic fringe fisher. Give your video guy a big thumbs up for a cool video even though he got nut shot. Could have been worse if you were using 6 oz sinkers.
Also, bending the frog hooks up. Been doing that since EK told us to during a HCT segment years back.
Entire ecosystems will collapse, we have about 12 years before the snakeheads replace humans. I hammered the snakeheads this summer, made a video. Great episode!
So when your first videos came out I felt like they were a bit overly aggressive and in your face, and hate it when metal guitar riffs are slapped on top of everything...However...that aerial shot of the beaver damn incident?...GOLD...Nothing but chugs could have fit that moment
“Dot the lower cased j’s”
Nice Wayne’s World pull.
The authorities said that these fish could travel overland while breathing air to relocate themselves to a neighboring lake or river. I found that hard to believe until I saw two of them hitchhiking on Rt. 95 outside of Fredericksburg. Pass the cool aid please!
everything joe cermele is 🔥
Well said
Love music selection on this one! I live out west and currently, as far as I know, there are no snake head issues. But I would love the opportunity to head east and snag a line or two on some. Looks like really good meat!
Come out anytime brother
Great vid brother. But if you really wanna be a part of the SH cult, you have to come down to south east asia. The Toman (Giant Snakehead) is what you really wanna try catching. A combo of size and power. 😉😉
I love this dude
Kill it before you bleed it... literally no reason not to... Leaving it alive wont cause extra blood to pump out, and will cause extra stress hormones. Not to mention it's pointlessly cruel :(. Coming from someone who has killed and eaten 1000s of fish
I think there are only two river systems in VA with Snakehead populations, not sure what is up with the secrecy. You are correct, I will not change my ways and pumping the tires of these fish will likely encourage the 5 gallon bucket crew to spread these to more bodies of water in VA, as many have already done. I will keep killing them and eating many and I won't do anything to encourage folks to spread invasive species that have an impact that we do not really understand yet. I did enjoy the show, other than the snakeheads swimming away part.
There's more than 10 river systems in VA with established snakehead populations. Not counting 5 others that have had recorded catches in the past 3 years.
@@GAs06tC Interesting, I looked it up and DWR says the Potomac (of course) and the Rappahannock. What are the other ten river systems that contain them in VA? Frankly, I would am having a little difficultly thinking of ten river systems.
@@overhead18 I suppose I shouldn't have said river "systems". Ther are 10 confirmed rivers with established snakehead populations. Some are smaller rivers feeding off major rivers. Don't forget about the Eastern Shore fishery as well
@@GAs06tC I am not aware of snakeheads on the eastern shore, but I don't fish out there. To my knowledge there are snakeheads in the two rivers I mentioned and tributaries that feed them. Va DWR still encourages people to harvest every snakehead caught, that was really my point here. I prefer people not be encouraged to catch and release and certainly not encouraged to spread them around to other bodies of water.
Best content out there #MeatEater
Awesome thanks
Man, I haven't broken 6 lbs on my favorite fish, the bowfin. I mention it because they're so similarly shaped. The 5 lb 12 oz bowfin that I caught was HUGE and STRONG so I can't imagine a 10 lb'er. I now have a new goal.
Bowfin fishing is awesome! They fight like hell too. Where you fishing for them at?
They taste good, especially with pickled vegetables
These snakeheads make it to the pnw they’ll do some damage
Seriously the salmon and steelhead have enough problems
Great soundtrack.
Glad to see a meat eater in the south again especially Virginia!
Good show
Its the Ploop... Plooop.. Booom!
Watching the old Hookshots videos and seeing the snakehead curse and now seeing you catch an 11 pound snakehead makes me full of joy👏
Didn't realize I was in a cult...but I'm here for it. Long live the SNAKEHEAD!!
Can we get some B-Side fishing merch? I need a new hat
cook the tortilla !! rookie !
Frogs are so frustrating when you don’t have them figured out I’ve had tons of hits from largemouth and I’ve never properly set the hook on one
When will rinella return with more meat eater episodes?
That was an epic episode.
My comment/question is for grant. How are you liking the power drive trolling motor vs a more traditional cable steer for working back through those tight areas?
Hey man, it's not too bad. There's a tiny bit of lag from the remote to the trolling motor but not so much that it's a problem. After a little use you'll get used to it. I've never had an issue
Woooo, first like!!! Keep killing it Cermele!!!
I'm a day later then usual. But its because I bagged a big 8 point buck here in southern Ontario. My belly and freezer are stoked
If I could wish these completely out of the ecosystem I would.
Lol silly to wish away a fish that has become such a vital part of the ecosystem. 20 years with absolutely zero measurable impacts. Yet the fisheries are healthier than ever for every species sampled by VDGIF and Maryland Fish and Wildlife
Current situation is fishing for walleyes while watching B-sides fishing. Perfect afternoon
Also who's gonna donate to getting Grant a net with a longer handle?
Lol already got a new net! That net was on its last legs
Great Video! Snakehead is on my bucket list! Come do my show Joe!!
They’ll eat a chatter bait when they’re being temperamental on top water.
Snakeheads are coming to Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana
umm due bought a $37 000 boat but has a walmart panfish net... i love it!!
Hook shots what was that again ? Lol
Over walleye? Any day??? Ok I have to try snakehead…
I've eaten the small ones from ponds in Thailand. Still better than most Freshwater fish in the US.
Did Mick Gordon do the music for this episode? I feel like I'm playing Doom: Eternal at 15:30
That drone footage over the dam was fake! Nicely done
Fake? Really? Lol
The fishing was great, but does anyone know the song playing when he caught the 11 pounder?
Was science proven wrong? Seems like science did what science does...ya know study things and adjust. Like a snake head its always a moving target!
