@@matthewsawczyn6592 Binny’s has carried store picks of the rye , but I always see it at woodmans in Kenosha and total wine in Milwaukee. Worth the gas money and bonus … no tolls (yet)

I have a bottle of this that I bought almost 2 years ago. It started out pleasant and one-dimensional. After a few months it developed a sawdusty oak note and became two-dimensional. I’m at half bottle mark now and no additional dimensions appearing. A cask on its 12th refill and loaded with caramel colorant is my guess. But you can certainly use it to impress someone who knows nothing about whisk(e)y.
How much did you pay for it, if you don't mind my asking?

I also added water to this but I get more chocolate and dark fruit from this. I paid 87$ for this but my favorite is still the 23. Glad you still enjoyed the donations.

Costco is also one of the world’s largest retailers of alcoholic beverages. It’s also the single largest retailer of Scotch whisky in North America. Its Kirkland Signature brand of Blended Scotch Whisky and Single Malt Scotch Whisky ranks in the top 10 Scotch whisky brands, by volume, in the US. Recently, Costco released the latest Scotch whisky additions to its Scotch whisky core range.
In its 2022 fiscal year, Costco sold approximately six and a half billion dollars of alcoholic beverages. About half of those sales were wine, and the balance was roughly divided evenly between spirits and beer. Costco is the largest retailer of wines in the United States and is probably the largest retailer of alcoholic spirits.
The chain has 842 stores as of July 2021, 579 of which are in the US, 107 in Canada, and 40 in Mexico. Its retail footprint ranges from Iceland to New Zealand and China to Mexico. Roughly one-third of the US stores sell spirits, and approximately two-thirds sell wine and beer. Costco carries 45-60 spirit SKUs, 14-18 beer SKUs, and 150 wine SKUs.
Be careful with that reflux. A buddy of mine suffered a torn esophagus from too much alcohol.

They've explained this recently, but they used to do this and it just took so much more work to do a bit. And especially on a channel with minimal editing, it just isn't worth it.
I really enjoy this whisky. It is my favorite one of all the age statement single malts from Kirkland. I bought a 19 year single malt that was most recently available around here and it wasn't nearly as good to me.
I dont drink spirits much but i was very surprised to see that their wines are surprising not terrible..
For example they have a Barolo for under 20$ that is decent..
Interestingly,it was good but also lacked complexity.

There’s very few options for a 24 year old scotch whiskey under 100 dollars. Of course age isn’t everything by no means. Kirkland has some pretty decent bottling’s for the price point. Kudos. 🥃
I gotta wonder what would happen if the distillers filtered out the sherry left in the cask, distilled it and mixed it in with the new make, and then put that mix in the sherry cask
I've been adding water to Peaty
whiskeys and letting it sit for a day. Getting a scotch mist just a whole different flavor
It'd be good to know when the bottle(s) was purchased. Costco can hold these bottles back. I just found an 18 and 19yo at two different Costco's. It's hard to figure out when they release them.
1) agreed that 100-110 is my sweet spot.
2) doing A/B comparisons with different proofs is unfair because of the flavor intensity/ density. So it helps me to equalize them on proof. Level playing field
If you can find a bottle of 25yr. Kirkland Highland single malt, try that. It's really hard to find.

I honestly appreciate Daniel admitting that drinking high proof whiskies is not easy. yes they taste better but i feel like they burn my palate out and leave me craving lower proof pours.

About blending proof, if I recall correctly didn't you tell a story when in Scotland of drinking with a blender from a big name company that would just splash what would seen like alot of water in whiskey which at the time seemed surprising?
I have a bottle of cask strength Redbreast 12, and it is wonderful at full strength, but after adding some water, it starts to taste more complex and fruity. I wish they made a 50% abv version.
I think the taxes they would have to pay to release at that proof in the U.K. or Ireland, to say nothing of the tax the consumer would have to pay on the bottle keeps that from happening. I wonder if they could release it to just the American market and if that would make a difference?

46% abv is a very nice spot for me
I’ve found that I never like adding water to bourbon, but I always enjoy Irish & Scotch more with water. Seems to me the lower the proof the less the water affects the flavor and actually enhances it 🤔
One thing I have found is that sometimes it seems to open up more after a few minutes.
my grandma was old school (grew up in 1930s) and taught me whiskey is supposed to have some drops of water in it. It unlocks flavor. I personally would rather just straight and no drops of water.

As a foreigner, what do the guys mean then they say "tart" in regards to whisky? Is it tart as in sweet, biscuit kind of taste or the bitter/sour taste of certain berries?

I too don’t care for the high proof stuff. To me the alcohol overpowers the character. And I live in the Southwest and always drink my whiskeys or whiskys on the rocks

I think Rex is misjudging his appreciation of water in whisky. Being a serious Whisky Vault watcher, I would say both Rex and Daniel might like adding water 20% or less of the times.
