- To help us, as Christians, have a clear understanding of modern-day Israel and how it relates to the Bible, we have asked one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the subject onto the podcast.
Dr. Gary Burge (www.garyburge....) (Ph.D., from King’s College at the University of Aberdeen, and M.Div., from Fuller Theological Seminary) is a New Testament scholar, professor, author, and ordained minister. After 25 years teaching at Wheaton College and Graduate School, he is now Adjunct Professor of New Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary (calvinseminary...) .
Gary has written biblical commentaries and scholarly books on the New Testament. He has also tackled the theological and practical issues surrounding the people and the land of Israel and Palestine.
In Jesus and the Land: The New Testament Challenge to "Holy Land" Theology (bakerpublishing...) (Baker Academic, 2010), Dr. Burge meticulously studies the Scriptures to challenge the “territorial theology” that some Christians have been trained to believe due to the lingering effects of Dispesationalism and the political lobbying of Christian Zionists. He describes first-century Jewish and Christian beliefs about the land of Israel and offers a full survey of New Testament passages that directly address the question of land and faith.
Gary Burge’s other book on the topic is Whose Land? Whose Promise?: What Christians Are Not Being Told about Israel and the Palestinians (www.thepilgrim...) (Pilgrim Press, 2003, Revised 2013). This book explores the history and conflicts of modern-day Israel and Palestine and also provides a study of what both the Old Testament and New Testament teach about Israel and the promised land. In this book, he also tells personal stories stemming from his many years visiting the people who struggle to live in this war-torn land, including the friendships he’s made with the people of God found in Palestine, that is, the many Christians who have suffered under Israeli persecution.

At 23:10 - The nation of Israel, re-founded in 1947, is treating everyone equally. The nation HAS to be based on secular grounds or else it will end up like the Arab/Muslim countries were people who are NOT Muslim are discriminated against in rights and before their Law.
At 30:01 - No, the rest were not "Palestinians"; they were from everywhere in the Middle East, a lot came from Egypt, there were Syrians, Hashemites, Beduin, etc, as well as Jews.
There ALWAYS was a Jewish population in Samariah and Judea.
At 30:25 - It seems to me that Gary Burg has heard the stories mainly from Palestinian Christians in the area of Judea and Samariah who identify with Hamas?
Does he know that when Jewish people slowly came to trickle back to their homeland in the early nineteen hundreds there was an Arab/Muslim massacre of a Jewish village after which the Jews who already lived in the land retaliated; same pattern that has been going on ever since, including Oct. 7th 2023. The Jews did NOT PUSH the Arabs out, they fled with the intention to come back when the Jews were defeated, except that they were not defeated.
Muslims attack, Jews retaliate. Same old, same old. To this very day.
Those Arab famiies that decided to stay and NOT leave their land after Israel had declared independence, have received equal rights in everything, except that they do not do mandatory army service, that is voluntarily. And some indeed do. They even have an Arab Israeli Supreme Court judge. If that is not equality than what is?
Meanwhile, if Israel would NOT defend itself now, Israel with all its people, including Arabs (about 2000 of them) will be wiped out.
They are surrounded by 21 Muslim nations with Hamas and Hezbollah types bend on killing the Jews because that is what their prophet has told them to do.
Mohammed claims that he is doing God's work, since the Jews were not always obedient and if God punished them, well, Mohammed's visions told him he should finish the job!
Ironically the Muslim population has benefitted enormously economically from their Jewish neighbour. If Gaza is a basket case now it is not beause Israel did it; they did it to themselves.

At 53:00 - I think that the term 'The Chosen People' has to do with the fact that God had to start somewhere bringing the human race to a consciousness of there being One Source of Life and Love. God chose Abraham. Maybe because the Hebrews were a people that were tenacious when they had set their eyes on something, determined, curious, inventive....
The whole Old Testament is a struggle; they are constantly arguing with God and they get expelled twice from the plot of land he has allocated them. During their exile however they keep his laws, theys stick to the traditions that keeps them together while the Gentiles spread the Word of God. After all, Jesus was a Jew and He never overturned the Jewish Law.
Church hierarchies who got too big for their boots tried to get rid of those who did not follow the Church (Roman that is!), but ever since the Reformation when Christians began to read the Bible for themselves they genuinely developed an affection for the Jews. WHY? Because they actually did not go around conquering other nations, killing to become "martyrs", many people were were helped and supported by Jewish people who were compassionate and kind when no-one else was and in general they helped pushed humankind into the direction we were meant to go.
We have become more conscious, more aware. Humans are nicer people on a larger scale than those of 4000 years ago.

The Bible, your guideline to line, if you are Christian does not say “reinvented Israel” must be secular. Observant Christians, Jews and Muslims have very much in common, in that they share very many values and beliefs.
The people of modern day 'Western' secular democratic Nations have broken away from their religious foundational values, beliefs and traditions, and are therefore much further removed from Christianity than Christianity is to Judaism and Islam.
Read the Quran and the Hadith (commentaries on the Quran from other imams) and you might have second thoughts on saying that Jews and Christians have a lot in common. You may also understand why Israel is fighting for its life.
The Grand Mufti from the Jerusalem travelled to Germany before WWII and stayed there for at least three years and agreed with Hitler, he also went out of his way to rid the Arab lands of Jews, either killed them or drove them out. Check the statistics.

As an Australian the statement “this is about a nation that’s kllng its own indigenous population” made me cry. The fiction of a two state solution creates a schism in the mind as well. I’ve thought of Israelis as kllng the people they want to be.. no, they’re kllg their own, not another.
There are ex palestinians... if you hear how they were raised up to hate jews... it is horrible. Look up palestinian summer camps. Hamas is like Isis and they copy their prophet Mohammed. Do some history study on this.
Plus they are from Esau's... his grandson Amalek got cursed by God. Because they attacked the weak, old from behind... look up in bible.
