    Hey Tom, I've only played a couple of early Gibsons (55'-60'), and I was wondering what your experience has been as far as the difference in the P-90's of that era.

    • @501chorusecho
      @501chorusecho  8 місяців тому +49

      dude...general rule of thumb...if it was made by gibson, and it was built between 1935 and early 1965, there's about a 99 pct chance it's gonna be a killer instrument.

      @501chorusecho ya can't agree more the only Gibson of that era ever owned was the one pickup P90 Les Paul junior SG body from around 62/63.
      It was totally beat up and the neck and headstock repairs we're less than Pro so it never stayed in tune but my god did it sound amazing with that P90 and that wiring harness

    • @michaeldavis4969
      @michaeldavis4969 8 місяців тому +4

      I'm a firm believer that nearly every component of these vintage guitars contributes incrementally to the killer tone: tonewood (yes, don't argue); pickup magnets, wire and winding; harness wire; pots; capacitors etc. Modern Gibson and modern pickup winders can reverse engineer much of this stuff, but it is tough to fully match the tonal impact of old wood and aged electronics.

    I was just on a flight. 62 year old woman next to me told me her husband's uncle gave him a guitar. What is it? 'It's a Martin. Are those good?" She texted him for more info. It is apparently a D28 'from the 30s'. I told her to contact Gruhn's and set up an appointment to have the guitar checked. When I told her what the price range on those instruments is, she was quite surprised. I told her to buy the guitar a seat when and if she makes the trek to Gruhn's!

    Hey Uncle Lar, just catching up and maybe someone already answered this, but the screwdriver trick won't change the intonation at least of the strings to each other and definitely not to a degree that you're gonna notice playin slide. You're still suspending the strings pretty much along the same line like a nut does, but it becomes more 'relative' since that point is rounded and nut a precise point like a nut slot. It will raise the overall pitch since you're stretching the strings further, but you can just tune down a bit to compensate.

    One more question about the speed you are getting with that loose wrist action... are your fingers gliding on the pickguard, or floating? By the way, this guitar sounds STELLAR! You are a blessed man Tom Bukovac!! Glad to see you feeling better! ♥

    he also placed a piece of fretwire to raise the string height at the nut right in front of the nut before the first fret. homemade zerofret!
