hahaha, that reminded me of a scene from Hot Tub Time Machine when Craig Robinson mentions the name of the movie and makes direct eye contact with the camera for moment.
Uncle Larry, I’ve been playing for over 20 years, and someday I hope to be able to invoke one tenth of the emotion you do when you play. Those chords, man. You’re an incredible inspiration.
I'm an engineer. Never going to be a great guitarist. I enjoy the process of the hobby. Never wanted to make my hobby a job. Relearning to play after a couple strokes made it all the more precious. Every once in a while someone will mention some great guitarist who overcame some malady to be even better and that I have no excuse. Well, I wasn't good to start, lost the use of my left hand/arm for a decade. Feel blessed to be here...will die a guitar hack. I'm okay with that. Thanks for the forum to chat, Tom
I love the way the whammy detunes your chords when you start with it depressed as you hit the notes so they sound like they’re falling apart, then you release it and everything’s in tune. Hell then heaven.
Uncle Larry is a servant of the music. He is a champion FOR the music (and the listener), and serves selflessly, with true caring, dedication, and devotion, and sends the music straight into your heart. REAL LOVE. . . . . . top that MFs !
If I had to describe Tom Bukovac with a single word it would be the word real. Real meaning that his demeanor is down to earth, humble and sincere, with a refreshing lack of pretension. There are as many life lessons here as there are music/guitar lessons.
Many thanks uncle larry for being such a beacon of light to all of us working class guitar slingers...i may never see the mainstage, but everytime i learn something from ole tommy..it makes me feel accomplished as if the whole world was watching cheering me on.
Damn near every song/tune I ever learned ( I started in 1974 ), was totally by ear, listening to records & tapes, with the help of Budweiser beer. The beer literally helped me get the vibe & groove of all of those songs. ( I've always played & sang at the same time. Still do. )
Tim Pierce tipped me off to your channel, and I’m so glad he did. Now I get up mid-morning, grab a coffee and check out what’s happening with you-a great way to start the day. Stay cool, bro.
I started coming here a few years back for the playing but as time goes on I’m coming here for the chatting. Power and respect to you Tom. Greetings from Brisbane Australia.
By accident I stumbled onto this channel during the covid sessions day 1. I had no idea who this guy was/is. Ever since Tom has not only given us "free lessons" but most importantly has given me and others amazing insight into to his life while maintaining the most humble of attitudes. Thank u !
I got a Music City bridge for my 62 LP/SG Jr and it works perfectly. The guitar actually intonates well now, and sounds amazing. Awesome video and thanks for the gold on using the bar and the slide.
Your music, teachings and way of seeing life are the best example of the benefits of technology for those of us who live thousands of kilometers from Nashville. Don't you ever change!
Long time viewer, first time commenter, but thank you Uncle Larry. I love sitting across the table from you on YT, and soaking up your wisdom & humor. And by all means, go get Plexi Soul. I turned my wife onto it, and it never fails to set the mood, hubba hubba. It’s so good. I know, it’s only rock n roll, but I like it!
Uncle Larry! Firstly, thank you for everything! Your wisdom and guidance has brought new life to my passion of playing music. Secondly, back in late March I had the opportunity to go to Nashville (from Canada) to play on a project with Pat and Kalmusky at Oceanway and Curb. The whole experience was life changing, but Kalmusky dropped your name in a casual conversation and since then I've become a huge fan and follower of yours. It took 2 weeks to obsessively catch up on every single Homeskoolin' video. You're a massive inspiration Man and I hope I can buy you a Rolling Rock the next time I'm down there. I will be back LOL. Cheers!
May I ask which part of Canada you’re from? There’s a woman in my town , in Nova Scotia, who has an audition next month in Nashville. It’s for singing.
Soooo glad to have stumbled on to this UA-cam channel back during the not-so-great distancing. Tommy Emmanuel was the first to truly leave me gobsmacked while watching/listening to him play....Uncle Larry is definitely on that very short list of musicians that ooze musicality when they play...that can bring me to tears or make me cheer as they do what they do sooooo well. Fan for life Uncle Larry...
I have been trying to steal the blues turn around that you played at 1:06 since I first heard you play it with Trapp! I got it now and thank you! Flipping awesome
Tom.. thank you. You’re an inspiration to us all. I wear you homeskoolin shirts with pride! Thanks for the videos. Been watching since the beginning and am grateful for your time

I used the whammy to wiggle and shimmer chords, and with a volume pedal, used it to play fake steel guitar in the variety band I was in for 27 years. Talent is real, as is the lack of it. :-)
The good Uncle dropping knowledge in-between knowledge. "In many ways in life". Brilliant, as always. Uncle Larry always keeping us on our toes and learning. Thank you!
So fitting that you chose a Paul Simon tune to learn off a record. I just learned One Trick Pony and Nobody from the One Trick album! That recording, and many more of his songs are an exercise in harmonic excellence. Funny note to include in a message to you, a former Cleveland native is: when Richard and Paul, in the film of same name, are talking as Paul is bathing, the camera then looks out the window across Brookpark Rd. including the marquee of the hotel they’re in. On the marquee it reads “ Vince Harrison and the Naturals “. The band I was sideman with at the time. Playing at Joe Finan’s Four Seasons Lounge. Not long after I met your guru, Bubba and had the pleasure working with him and remaining friends to this very day. Sorry about the meandering grammatical extravaganza herein but a bit of Cleveland mini history. Love Home Skoolin’!!
Hey Tom... I'm from Uk (no idea who Teddy Boy is though! Lol) ... not sure if there was more, but can tell you that the comment you read out in this vid would not be considered as "going after someone" here ... In fact, I would have read that as a general conversation starter rather than a personal slight toward you... We British are WAY less filtered when we speak than Americans! ... I hope this helps diffuse any tension! ... Would also like to say that I think you're doing an amazing job with this channel, and honestly, I still enjoy all the content you share as much today as I did back in 2020 when you started... Not one bad video yet... May you long continue to find inspiration, both for your music and your channel!!! 🤘😊
Tom, reach out with your feelings, yes you can smack down your haters with the success you've had, but keep growing, keep improving you have the gift. May the force be with you always.
I'm one of the guys that asked about pickup height in the past. Thanks for answering. I'm also a fan of low pickups for similar reasons and wanted to hear your views on it. Another one that drives me batty is people obsessed with having all the pickups at the same height on a guitar. It makes no sense. I set mine where I like the sound of them and don't worry about whether they match each other except for similar volume.
Man, I love you. Thanks the lesson on vibrato bar, and pickup height, and ignoring the gear page, and practicing. You described exactly what seems intuitively obvious to me. But know-it-all big-mouths in other places spout off like they are the last word in everything. So thanks!
Uncle Larry - love your videos. Helping folks get through the day - its much appreciated. Ignore the noise out there...if they have an issue w/you or your content they can go pound sand.
While I'm no Uncle Larry, or even remotely close, when people comment positively on my playing at gigs or wherever, I generally say, well, I try to suck a little bit less everyday ;-) Thanks again Tom for all you do.......
I watch several guitar channels and you, Uncle Larry, are at the top of the list. I learn so much from y'all. Triads, CAGED, but I know that I'm desperately lacking in certain areas. When is one of you guys, and I'm assigning you, going to do the video on guitar face? 😩😟😖😵💫 This is too important a lesson to be left neglected. ✌️
Tom, in the few short weeks that I've been watching your videos I have been inspired, intrigued and very much enjoy what you provide so freely for everyone. I especially enjoy your digressions on so many gigs, sessions and general guitar playing guy shit that you've done, it's very hip, please continue brother!
Uncle Larry... I've been subscribed to the channel since the early beginning about volume six (6), early on when COVID had everyone locked down. I've always enjoyed your work and each volume you've posted. I'm sure you've been a big influence on many of the viewers as well. Thanks for stickin' to it and hangin' in through all the pains of life! P.S. Please make sure to post the session with you on drums and Marshal on guitar!
Love your cast. I've been playing so much more since I started watching. I used to be a session bass player in LA back in the late 70's. There were too many shitty whammy bar guitar players , I switched to bass.i stopped playing for a living in the late 90's. Love that opening song. Sweet
Uncle Larry the 3 years or so I’ve been watching you has helped my playing improve and I’m so grateful to have found homeskoolin your guitar playing has changed my approach and made me inspired to practice daily and really work on implementing the skills I’ve learned from you! Thank you for HS lessons. I’m looking forward to the new 11 song album from Guthrie and you. The black and white wearing pants #10 is so good I’ve watched it at least 20 times and have been working on playing it…also really looking forward to new Trip the witch and Plexi Soul projects? This current HS episode is excellent the wang bar and slide are areas I’m looking to improve upon and this was very helpful. Thanks again for what you’re giving us it’s appreciated greatly!
You know I have been watching you since the beginning, it has been one of the most enjoyable times i’ve ever had! I sit with my guitar in my lap and guffaw every once in a while. Before you it was a Brit ( deltabluestips). What you’re doing is special. Back in the day you had to get around, you had to look for other guitar player and when you found them we were immediate friends. You would drive hundreds of miles to hear someone of you r quality. It’s this whole age we now live in. This Brit more than likely loved your vids at the beginning , then at some point he went sour man. I appreciate the fact you even tend to read some of mine, and reply. I never get to serious here unless I have a question concerning guitars and this is the place to go for people who love playing guitar. Thanks Dave, dug your vid today.
These videos are an amazing resource for guitarists, and so far it seems like every episode has at least one incredibly valuable diamond of essential knowledge or wisdom based on your experience.... Sometimes it's something you say directly, sometimes it's hidden in an aside/passing comment, but it's always there. And then there are videos like this one, where you're just kind of throwing handfuls of diamonds at us like a six-string slinging Oprah...
I set up my "Tremolo" Bridges floating. Like Carl Verheyen. He calls it 'balanced Bridge'. When I pull up, the g-String goes up a minor third, the b-String goes up a whole step, and the high e-String goes up a half step. It's very musical that way, not a gimmick. I can bend up a G minor Triad to an A major Triad for instance. My Strats are pre CBS and they stay in tune, even when I go crazy with the Bar. I hold the Bar between my Ringfinger and Pinky like you. My Name is Tom too and I'm 53. I'm a Guitar Player for 40 years and watch your Videos for Inspiration. It works every time.😊 ✌
I always feared I was making a mistake or something keeping pickups low. Everyone else's were way the hell taller. I would raise 'em to try again and always hate it and drop back down in the end. Guess I should have trusted my own ear the first time. Thanks for the affirming take on that topic & all you do and have shared with us here! Great player, teacher, and human being- that's you Tom.
Always enjoy tuning in. Getting to be a habit. Thanks for what you're doing! A couple things: The tip to practice chords and scales with an unused slide persuaded me - thanks! Also I'm pleased to say I use the "vibrato" bar just as you've described...never divebombing - just using it as a subtle beautification technique. I'm a Stratocaster player for the most part - but have many nice (Non-vintage) guitars. A recent acquisition was a Gibson '61 SG with the Maestro Vibrola. The vibrola purportedly not very usable in the official lore. However, for my purposes, subtle beautification, it's superb and steady.Great instrument!! Finally, I know you lament the use of modelers. I'm old, have had seven tube amps - all Fender...loved them - still have a Princeton and a Deluxe Reverb (reissues). I will say, amidst that amp history, I recently obtained a Fractal FM3 and am enraptured by the sounds - straight through a Mackie PA system. No amp. Just beautiful! I know the purist in us says "don't go there... it's artificial" but in my experience it's opened an entire universe. I'm still keeping my Fenders but had to comment about the quality I've heard out of Fractal equipment. (Didn't get paid for this). Thanks again for your help! Stay cool! Roger
I'll admit that most of the time I'm afraid to leave a comment or ask a question on here because it might seem dumb or somehow lost in translation. It would break my heart if Uncle Larry responded back thinking so. You can trust his knowledge of everything guitar so naturally you want to pick his brain. We get told a lot of bs on forums and local shops and after awhile you just don't know what to believe. It shouldn't matter... but when guitar is a passion it becomes more than just playing. You want to know everything down to every last detail. Uncle Larry knows these things.
Thank you for the tips about the whammy . I will practice on not “grabbing “ lol …. My apologies..my mind was in the gutter a bit . I dig your style and need all the tips I can get 😀🎶🎸❤️❤️. Thank you for the laughs too. I was busting up ..” Teddy honey !” 😂😂😂

Great message about learning songs without looking at someone is playing it. Learn by ears!
The dead stare at 9:11 is hilarious. As always, great content. Thanks for another great episode, Uncle Larry.

I always feared I was making a mistake or something keeping pickups low. Everyone else's were way the hell taller. I would raise 'em to try again and always hate it and drop back down in the end. Guess I should have trusted my own ear the first time. Thanks for the affirming take on that topic
& all you do and have shared with us here! Great player, teacher, and human being- that's you Tom.
thank you love...i appreciate these words
I now love my juniors because of you telling me about the music city bridge.
Thanks Uncle Larry 😁
Yes! Finally something i do exactly like uncle larry: proper holding and using of wang bar. 👍👊
He cracks me up..! “ I gotta have the stick exactly 1 3/4”…” but then…” This one’s higher..but that’s ok “…!! Whaaattt..?? 🤣🤣🤣
That smile when you said "we're gonna knock 'em dead". LOL
ain't no noodles in this stew
U said it..
Great phrase man!
Lol
As you said one time uncle larry, its amazing how just two fingers changes the sound.
Stay cool! Roger
Excellent information. Thank you so much.
Just another average Joe here but dang it man as I’ve said 1000 times thanks for sharing your gifts and HUMOR seriously .
Your pause at 9:15, so fracking good. I can’t thank you enough for doing what you do.
Such a great helpful episode! Really needed this info, won't even say how much. Thanks for sharing all your expertise as always! 😎
that's a lovely piece. It started somewhere and went to interesting places.
So was his, lol. Allegedly.
