it just shows how horrible disney was with its stars during that time. they had to be perfect. they had to become adults overnight. once the contract was signed they weren't allowed to be kids, to make mistakes and learn from them. that time in your life is when you make mistakes and learn whats right and wrong. but how can you do that when your entire life is being watched by the public and a giant company like disney? you can't. theres a reason why so many child stars went down bad paths... the industry destroys them, abuses them, milks them for all their worth and then throws them to the curb when they aren't good enough anymore. it's sick.

Not really sure what you’re talking about. Once Miley turned 18 and became said adult she was free to do as she pleased. She never chose her status as a child. She didn’t ask to be a role model. Once she was of age she became herself. It’s incredibly ridiculous to assume someone would continue to play pretend because kids like her show.

One of the things that upsets me about the whole Vanity Fair photo is that no one questioned why Annie or Vanity Fair thought it was okay to use the photo. Miley should have faced no backlash, but the magazine and photographer should have been criticized for sexualizing a 15 year old. I do think that the sexualization of child stars (as in under the age of 18) is a major issue and it's not their fault, but the media's fault. You can see it in the comments surrounding the photo by the media where one of the talking heads said that someone in Miley's position would have the maturity of an 18 year old.
Miley shouldn't be ashamed of the photo, but the photographer and media should be questioning why they are shaming and sexualizing child stars, particularly female ones. And then why they are blaming those child stars for their actions.

Same. I was 12 or 13 when Can't be tamed came out. I loved the song, and my heavily christian mother forbade me from listening to it. I listened to it in secret, put it on my little mp3 player, had it hidden under a religious song name in my computer files, and deleted it off my mp3 player any time she asked my sister and I for our devices to 'make sure the devil wasn't misleading' us. (I also did the same with Eminem, and a bunch of screamo/emo bands.)

It always makes me so sad to see how much these young girls who were so full of spirit and life in their earlier interviews look in later interviews. Maybe it’s just me but you can see it in their eyes. How being a child star, the paparazzi, the media, and constant criticism really did drain them. The toll it must take on a teenager to constantly be told that you are a disappointment because you didn’t live up to outrageous expectations. I just hope Miley and the others can all find peace and happiness now.

I never really stopped to think but they heavily framed her as a a wild, uncontrollable woman back then. As someone who was young and deeply into Hannah Montana at the time, I’m ashamed to say I did buy into it. But upon reflection Miley was out here literally just existing as many teens do, she was just unfortunately in the public eye.

Unfortunately I bought into it as well back then, but as I grew older I understood more of the pressure that these stars go through to be presented as “perfect” role models at any age, but especially for child stars growing up for other children. Disney really sells that desire to become a star on their channel, but what these kids don’t see is the abuse that comes with being one of their “stars”, they only see the fame and unfortunately the aftermath of when someone wants to unchain themselves from the company.
I do regret my reaction to the story that the media sold about Miley, however like she said we can’t go back in time to change it, but we can go forward with a more open mind and learn from our mistakes. I honestly am proud of her, throughout everything, she still has her head on tight regardless of what the media or anyone else seems to think. In the end it is her life to live, not anyone else’s and she’s living a pretty damn good life.

It was so common to make these child stars look bad as they became adults and no longer acted childlike, we didn't bat an eye to it. Now I see it for what it is, the media trying to spin a narrative and make money off of someone else's misery. It was disgusting behavior I'm glad I'm old enough to see now. She was the IT girl of Disney and on top of the world as a teenager yet a lot of adults and parents in the world was shaming her which reflected on the younger audience who did the same because of how the media fed those words to people. I remember when I stopped being a Hannah fan and finally grew out of it. It was a few weeks before Christmas. I was living with my gramma at the time. I went out to the living room, went over to my Hannah Montana stocking, and looked at my gramma. I just kind of held the stocking and told my gramma "I don't think I like Hannah Montana anymore."
It was pretty much around the same time that Miley, herself, was done with Hannah Montana. So as Miley got older and matured out of the Hannah persona, I also got older and matured out of the Hannah fandom.
But as for Miley Cyrus? I am a HUGE fan and will always be a fan of hers and support her. I adore her so much. I'm just so happy she is able to be herself.

Dunno, always felt weird how she was treated, she’s fucking great.

It’s really gross to me that a panel of grown adult women (I’m speaking specifically of The View) think it’s ok to shout “I made Miley Cyrus promise to wear underwear!!!!” when she was like 15. Barbara Walters and Rosie O’Donnell should be embarrassed and ashamed.

15:14 is no one questioning why Annie chose to photograph her like that? Miley was a child. Annie was a professional photographer who knew those photos would cause a stir and that’s why she took them.
I really feel for Miley. Being ‘agreeable and easy to work with’ are the very qualities she was praised for but then crucified for when following the artistic direction of a very famous artist.

I am SO ASHAMED for thinking that way!!!! I absolutely love Miley and everything she stands for now, I am very proud of how she has handled her life.

It’s crazy even as a kid when I was 10/11 who was a big fan of Miley, I didn’t see a huge deal or freak out with what Miley was doing in this era. It was mainly adults. Can’t be tamed is still my fav Miley album.

She’s been to hell and back with Disney, and I’m so happy to see her living her life on her terms. This video series is incredible, Deep Dive never disappoints! the best doc channel on YT imo :)

I vividly remember the day of the can't be tamed tv premiere. I watched it live in front of the TV and my parents were shocked and appalled, it really was so real how everyone wanted her to be kept in that Hannah image. I saw her on that first tour and everyone was there for "hannah" half the audience had left before Miley came out as herself for the final song. I can only imagine how that kind of shit affected her

Yes! I took my niece to see a miley concert in 2009 I think it was at the London o2. She had just left hannah montana pretty much but had released a miley cyrus cd. So many kids were there for "hannah". I remember parents there being disappointed. Oh PLEASE! So sad

I grew up watching hannah Montana. I looove miley, i know her story, but we didn't received details about what happened behind The scenes. Extremelly sad! But at the same time it's incredible how strong she was and still is!

Britney, Selena, Gaga, Miley, all were essentially crucified for anything and everything but during that time, Bieber, Timberlake, and all the boys band singers were partying just as hard, probably even more, and effing around and none ever got shamed for it. No one ever questioned their sanity, or career choices, or called them derogatory names. The state of society we live in is just sad. Live and let live. You don't like what an artist is doing? Then it's just not for you. No need to trash said artist because they don't appeal to you. And can we stop with the double standard please?

You need to open your eyes more. Justin Timberlake was often rumored to be the gay one of NSYNC before Lance Bass came out and Bieber was *destroyed* for looking ultra youthful by the general public that is the same age. He was often called a lesbian or gay and Baby was at one point the most disliked video on UA-cam history. Boy bands were often criticized for being 0% art and disposable, like industry crap meant just for teen girls

    • @lucasessman1910
      @lucasessman1910 2 роки тому +1

Not true at all lmfaooooo. If you don’t remember Justin Bieber, Charlie sheen, etc, being crucified relentlessly for their crazy partying choices, you either have your head in the sand or you purposely left that out to serve your point. Not to mention, the rampant homophobia that plagued all of the boys in the spotlight around that time as well. As a queer man, there’s things you haven’t paid attention to, due to the fact that it isn’t a relatable struggle for you, but it doesn’t mean you should act like these boys don’t go through their own issues regarding toxic masculinity and the patriarchy. I notice this a lot honestly. Women talking about women’s issues and completely ignoring that queer men exist or that men aren’t forced into boxes too🤷‍♂️

I could understand that she apologized because she had young girls who were majority of her fans and had this pressure to be a role model. But at the same time she was a teenage girl who raised by fame and media shamed as a kid for pictures of typical teenage stuff that was never meant to be seen by anyone but herself or close friends. She and other former Disney channel stars should never had to be shamed for growing up.

I agree with her defending her clothing choices at her age. I’m the same age as Miley (meaning I was 16 at the same time she was 16), and it was not uncommon for me and all my friends to wear things like short shorts and tank tops/things of that nature to school. She was picked on because media outlets saw an opportunity for profit off the heels of other stars like Lohan and Spears. Also at that age (and my sister, 3 years younger), we were very much aware of the grooming that took place with Disney stars and how their mental health was probably affected as a result.
