Hi Everyone! Over the past few weeks starting our van build we've hit some serious roadblocks and this week is no different. BUT we are learning more and more every obstcle and challenge we face. After all, we are just some kids with no experience. We are looking forwarding to the oppourtunity to grow from these future challenges. Thanks so much for being here with us 💛
First of all, drilling out bolts for your first attempt at drilling metal is like graduate level stuff. So the fact that you had problems isn't that uncommon. It is great that you had reinforcements to help you out. As said in other comments, 135 degree points help, cobalt drills help, but using that large of a drill bit in a hand drill on a hardened bolt is just tough. The smaller bits can run faster, and they require much less cutting pressure to form a chip and cut (less surface area). As the size gets larger that area get larger much faster and you can't generate enough downward pressure to make a chip. That is why it is called a drill press, you are literally using it as a press to create enough pressure with a large bit to drill a hole. Embrace the grinder, sparks are your friend. :) Good luck this week. We are all pulling for you.
Congrats on making progress with those bolts! When you need to drill through steel, you should look for drill bits that have a 135-degree split-point tip. Those will be difficult to find at most "big box" hardware stores. Most drill bits have 118-degree standard point tips. That's fine for wood and aluminum, but dulls quickly on harder materials like steel. The split point tends to keep the bit centered in the hole, which makes it less likely that the drill will "walk" when starting a hole or drilling on an angle. A little cutting fluid (a.k.a. cutting oil or tapping fluid) provides some lubrication and cooling. Bigger bits need slower RPMs than smaller bits, or they'll overheat and dull quickly. Looking forward to the next episode!
Awhhh thankyou so much! Shooting itself, that's really my strong suit - being on camera and all of that is where I am learning most! Thanks to taking the time to comment and watch 💛

What a blast! When I bought my drill bits for drilling through my saw bar I found ones that worked better for metal. Even that was spinning with no progress by the end! Great job you two!
Good late afternoon from the almost dry PNW… I thought I would change it up and start watching you before watch the Vanwives and Tyler and Todd! I can’t believe Pete actually ate that not so chewable gum … your van lay out looks awesome … you had me at “coffee bar”… can wait to see what’s in store next week… until then, stay positive and keep drilling away…
Looks like you are making progress, stubborn bolts, almost won that battle, you need some zip wheels for cutting steel, good quality drill bits , keep up the great work
If you don’t know what to do with that lift you removed I know Jeffie bear may be able to use it. He recently lost his legs to diabetes and is in van life who needs to rebuild a van for his new needs. I’m going to enjoy your build. I guess the girls gotcha interested. Cheers from Vancouver eh!
Thanks Susan. I'd be happy to connect to provide the lift. Yes, and I used to edit for Eamon and Bec as well. So I've been following this lifestyle for a long time!
Don't worry, it's not just you where everything is taking way longer than expected :). Were you drilling out the bolts dry at first? I drilled and cut through quite a lot of metal for my van during the past week and I used a lot of WD-40 or similar stuff for that. Dry nothing really happened... So would not be surprised if that damaged the drill bits.
@@colinandpaige I thought that might be it! My partner and I will be there too! We live in WA, but go to F1 in Montréal and Austin every year. I’m enjoying watching your van build. It’s going to be great.

Where's this week's video at Collin that's not a good way to start out a UA-cam channel you're almost up to 10,000 subs that's a big milestone. Sorry just trying to help you out at least give us a heads up or something.
Hi Rodney. I appreciate where this is coming from because it means you are behind us and rooting for our success. Unfortunately right now I am still transitioning from full time work and completing contracts, when those contracts expire, I will have the time and space to put towards this. It may not look like it, but it's a tremendous amount of work to put these together (which I love doing). After years of working 60+ hour work weeks, I'm burnt out, and I can't sacrifice my mental health right now just to then force poor quality vlogs out the door. But in July, I reckon we will be weekly and finally pursue this dream of full time UA-cam 💛 I hope you understand.
@@colinandpaige I understand totally I just thought that you guys should have posted something because you did before time when you guys wasn't going to put a video. I'm glad you're sticking out and finishing your contracts that would be bad thing to do if you would walk away from everything so I'm glad you as you are sticking to your guns and finishing your contracts. My wife and I just got done watching V:an wife's, they are kicking butt on that cabin. Enjoy this week.

Yep, angle grinder is faster and cheaper than drill bits for large bolts...if you can get to them with the grinder.

Ryobi is not the greatest quality for anything get Mikita or Milwaukee tools and accessories
Learned that lesson the hard way 🤣 I think it would be fine for aluminum or wood, but the bolts were tough metal
