  • Why this Joker story is kinda the best possible outcome.

Stuff I (probably) stole from Wikipedia:
The fictional superhero Batman, who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics, has appeared in various films since his inception. Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger,[1] the character first starred in two serial films in the 1940s: Batman and Batman and Robin. The character also appeared in the 1966 film Batman, which was a feature film adaptation of the 1960s Batman TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward, who also starred in the film. Toward the end of the 1980s, the Warner Bros. studio began producing a series of feature films starring Batman, beginning with the 1989 film Batman, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton. Burton and Keaton returned for the 1992 sequel Batman Returns, and in 1995, Joel Schumacher directed Batman Forever with Val Kilmer as Batman. Schumacher also directed the 1997 sequel Batman & Robin, which starred George Clooney. Batman & Robin was poorly received by both critics and fans, leading to the cancellation of Batman Unchained.[2]
Batman has also appeared in multiple animated films, both as a starring character and as an ensemble character. While most animated films were released direct-to-video, the 1993 animated feature Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, based on the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series, was released theatrically. Having earned a total of U.S. $2,407,708,129 the Batman series is the fifth-highest-grossing film series in North America.[5]
Gotham is an American crime drama television series developed by Bruno Heller, based on characters published by DC Comics and appearing in the Batman franchise, primarily those of James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. Heller and Danny Cannon, who directed the pilot, are executive producers. The series stars Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon, and premiered on Fox on September 22, 2014. In May 2018, Fox renewed the series for a fifth and final season of 12 episodes, which is set to premiere on January 3, 2019.
Originally the series would have relied only on Gordon's early days with the Gotham City Police Department, but the series subsequently included the Wayne character and the origin stories of several Batman villains, including Penguin,[4] Riddler,[4] Catwoman,[4] Poison Ivy,[5] Scarecrow,[6] Mr. Freeze,[7] Hugo Strange,[8] and Solomon Grundy.[9]
Jerome Valeska is a fictional character created by producer and screenwriter Bruno Heller for the television series Gotham, and played by actor Cameron Monaghan. The character acts as a tribute to the Batman supervillain the Joker,[1] as well as exploring the mythology of the character.[2]
Cameron Monaghan has garnered critical praise for his performance, particularly from actor Mark Hamill, who voiced the Joker in the DC Animated Universe.[3]
Jeremiah Valeska is a mentally deranged and dangerous terrorist, criminal and murderer. He is also the more intelligent and more dangerous identical twin brother of the anarchistic cult leader Jerome Valeska. After his brother's death, Jeremiah takes over the role of main antagonist for the final arc of Season Four.

Jerome and Jeremiah, I believe, are two pieces that together form the Joker. Jerome's got the insanity and gritty humor, Jeremiah has got the elegance and brains of a top tier criminal. Merged together, they may as well form a Joker very similar to Heath Ledger's interpretation - chaotic and messy, but also weirdly grounded and, dare I say, serious. His smile is engraved on his face - he himself rarely smiles. He is not giggly, but has moments of absoloute insanity. He tells jokes, but does it in a monotone voice. That, I believe, is how Jeremiah's going to be once he wakes up from his coma. Only... Scorched hairless. And I'm here for it.

    Great video.
If I'm honest, both Jerome and Jeremiah are great incarnations of the Joker.
The way I see it, when it comes to insanity, both are insane. The difference is that Jerome embraces his insanity, proof of how crazy he shows himself meanwhile Jeremiah ignores his insanity, convincing himself that he's sane.
Jerome is Unstable Madness, Jeremiah is Blissful Ignorance.
They are the Valeska Brothers, and they are one of the same.

The difference between the two is Jerome is the crazy maniac who wanted to plunge Gotham into madness. As with Jeremiah, he’s the calm-ish sadistic maniac who is extremely intelligent and able to manipulate and destroy people, while also maybe twice as capable as doing what Jerome wanted to do. Jeremiah is the joker, rightfully so in my opinion.

I think people including myself (yet) preferred Jerome as the joker because he felt like the perfect Joker since the first episode where he showed up, because he reminded us so much of Heath Ledger version of Joker. But I'm getting more related to Jeremiah too because Jerome was just psycho who wanted to turn people insane and kill. Jeremiah's goals are much deeper. I hope that while Jeremiah is unconscious Jerome will show up in his dreams/nightmares. Something like "Whats up little brother? Your destiny is to continue my legacy, just greater"

What I love about Jeremiah is that he had such a soft start with Bruce. That the first thing Bruce said to him were kind words was really touching? That Bruce was fond of him and seeing the potential they could have together. That made Js drop into insanity even more heartbreaking to me.

  • @daliborjovanovic510

If Jeremiah was introduced a lot earlier, that certainly could have helped flesh out his character a lot more. Especially if the show took the time to have him befriend Bruce and we saw them as friends for a longer period of time, it would have made Jeremiah turning heel a lot more tragic, with the show duping us into thinking Jerome was definitely the Joker while his "poor, innocent" brother suffers because of him, only to slowly unravel that Jeremiah is not what he seems to be, and it would have made Jerome's eventual death followed by Jeremiah getting gassed and having his skin bleached more shocking, instead of just one or two episodes of "Jerome has a twin brother! He dies! Sykes, twin brother reenacts iconic Killing Joke pose!".

I love Jeremiah for the reason that he is a unique take on the Joker that only Jack Nickolson really touched on, Jeremiah also reminds me of a couple of animated Jokers rolled into one like the dark Knight returns or killing joke. I accept the fact that Jerome is the more iconic Joker is some minds and whatever other reasons they like Jerome more is also valid. I do wish with Jeremiah they had introduced him in the half way point for S4 so they could build Bruce and Jeremiah's friendship and Jeremiah as a character, since Bruce is Jeremiah's motivation and all. As a side note you had said in one of your previous videos of Joker on Gotham that Jeremiah is a Gary Stu and that doesn't make sense to me, maybe you can explain it but in Gotham everybody is basically a Gary Stu because most of these people would just be killed on sight or arrested a long time ago but yet they aren't. And to me Jeremiah's intelligence is explained and he doesn't take unnecessary risky so he's the one of the least Gary Stus on the show at least to me.

Something I love about season 4 is that at the end of Jerome's arc he actually win, yes he died but he wanted revenge against the city and his brother, both that made him who he was, and he accomplish that, he knows that Jeremiah could've been like him if he has a bad day too, he just needed a little push to go insane so he made the gas for him to set free his insanity, taking away the so called sanity that Jeremiah desperately hold onto and giving Gotham city another nightmare, the death of Jerome was the ultimately joke and the rise of Jeremiah was the punchline

Anyone else notice how simple Jeremiah's makeup is (before the acid)? Other Jokers have something unique with their makeup, Nicholson had the deformed face, Ledger had the cut smile, Leto had tattoos, Phoenix had the unique face paint... all Jeremiah had was white skin, green hair and red lips. That's it. And yet, I think he might just be the best looking Joker.

A quality new look at the character is always better than the same 80 years. This allows the character to go through time. And Jerome wasn't so canonical. He only had a part of the Joker character, and Jeremiah had both, they just pushed what Jerome had into the background and what Jerome didn't have into the foreground. Jeremiah is something new. It's a challenge for an actor to play his own version of the Joker, and not just laugh and shoot again. This is much more valuable than just showing the old things well again.

Jeremiah grew me on pretty fast and I'm sure Season 5 was not meant to be the final season. The network cancelled the show but gave them a heads up. Hence why it comes off kind of rushed. Who knows, they may have had 8 seasons in mind, giving us plenty of time to get to know Jeremiah. That being said, I do think he was always the endgame. Keep in mind, it was revealed by Cameron M. himself that they were going to kill of Jerome for good in his Season 3 story arch, beheading him, but changed plans, probably for fan service and because of how great the actor was. Their idea may have been, "Lets give the fans a bit more Jerome to tie them over, get rid of him, and then BAM, out of no where: twin brother." Eh.

IDK why but i LOVE Jeremiah more than Jerome. i think he is the better Joker. ik this video was made before the Gotham series finale buti love how they did J. like see person growing from sane guy really intelligent and dressed with the fashion and the time slowly transforming into guy thats half bald wears green suit with purple color on it( which i think it does look like only purple) yellow gloves and he is insane but sane at the same time. and i love his scenes. and he made chaos in the city, like blowing up the bridges and making something like apocalypse to the citizens of Gotham, blowing up the clock tower and make them think that James Gordon is dead, but he is not. then doing some torture to Bruce like shooting Selina, make him think that Alfred has lost his mind and recreating his parents death. so i think Jeremiah is Gothams Joker. and i like him more. :P

HA HA HA! Loved the intro, mate. Saturated with Jeremiah quotes. Perfect. Great video as usual dude. I suppose in a way, I am a fan of Jeremiah as well. Sure. I might have ragged the character a bit too much for everyone's liking but really, he's a good character. If he'd only been given a longer amount of time to expand. I get they were trying to do the whole thing where Gotham's Joker (much like the comic book counterpart.) had little to nothing for a background. I'm actually looking forward to seeing him once again in the final episode. As Joker fans, we're bound to pick out those things that we do not like. Keep up the great work, man. Love your videos.

  • @sizar9003

Fuck, I'm already writing a fucking comment, but still. Jerome wanted revenge on Jeremiah for ruining his life. In addition, at the end of season 4, there is such a kind of film adaptation of a Murderous Joke. Jerome is both the bandits who dragged the Joker to the factory, and here Jeremiah had to help the police because of him. And at the same time, he is the Joker's wife, whose death brings the Joker to the edge. And Jeremiah is also devastated by his brother's death, even though he hated him. And the Scarecrow's gas doesn't just release Jeremiah's true essence, but serves as an analog to a vat of chemicals.

  • @kimberlyterasaki4843
    @kimberlyterasaki4843 5 років тому +1

I think the issue is that the Valeska brothers each encapsulate one of Joker's two main philosophies; Jerome is "the world is joke so you might as well laugh as it burns" while Jeremiah is "the sanest man alive can go mad with just one bad day." I think both have their merits and offered a great challenge to Gotham and its heroes, but I think Jeremiah will work better as a potential future antagonist for the Batman because Bruce knew him before he had his bad day (and arguably a little bit afterward) and has a touch more of a personal connection to him (the creation of the bombs, the shooting of Selina, the destruction of the bridges and all of No Man's Land are all directly linked to Bruce and Jeremiah's relationship). But yeah, I agree that a lot of the frustration is due to Jeremiah's late introduction and Gotham (presumably) getting cut short, which is mostly out of the creator's hands. While it is great to imagine what might have been if we could have had both Valeska Brothers, we must accept the reality; Cameron Monaghan has other acting commitments that limit his time commitments (especially since Jerome's and Jeremiah's makeup would make playing them together much more complex), writers are not omniscient and could not plan out everything two or three years in advance, and even if they were, their plans probably would have been cut off by the reduced final season. In the end, I personally would rather have Jeremiah providing a contrasting presence than have Jerome be the only possible version of 'the Joker' on Gotham.

Jeremiah is more interesting than Jerome. I'm sorry, but it's true. Jerome was awesome and cool, but he didn't become the Joker in front of our eyes. He became one because the show needed ratings. He just snaps his fingers and becomes a psycho. Jeremiah as it was said in the series has always been crazy and it is he who is responsible for Jerome's wit. Jerome doesn't have the Joker's ability to create a completely crazy and well-thought-out plan for the sake of a mere trifle. Jeremiah started this game just to make friends with Bruce. Jerome and Bruce had nothing in common and he had no development, and when the series tells about the formation of heroes, it will be more interesting that the character who gradually becomes the one we know, and not at the click of his fingers became a recognizable stub from the character. As you did not twist it, Jerome is only a stub from the Joker, and Jeremiah brings to the fore the qualities of the Joker that are usually not noticed, but when they are not there, it turns out Jerome Valeska. It seems to be the same cool, but something is missing. At the same time, Jeremiah is not without these notable qualities of the Joker. It's just that now what used to be in second place is now at the forefront. Jeremiah is the best interpretation of the Joker I've ever seen. Everyone can transfer everything from comics, and in so skilfully it is necessary to be able to rethink it. And if you want the Canon so badly, then Jerome is going through the roof, so mark Hamill is here to help you.

if i were to have been handling Jerome and Jeremiah in seasons 4 and 5, i wouldnt have killed Jerome in season 4, i wouldve made it so his 'death' was different, something that it would be believable that he lived, like, instead of falling off a building, maybe he gets shot in the gut, and we dont see him die, just fall over unconscious, then JEREMIAH is shown (either in the post credits of season 4s finale or at the beginning of season 5) to have captured Jerome and kept him locked up, cut the gas scene, and instead of Jerome transforming Jeremiah into the joker from the grave, hes actually in a cell, tormenting Jeremiah with his words, the reason Jeremiah keeps him there is because he doesnt trust anyone to not let Jerome escape, so he locks him up himself
so, then in Season 5, Jerome is the one fighting Jeremiah at Ace chemicals, and JEROME pushes him in, not Bruce, all the while Jeremiah is keeping up the facade of being a good guy to Bruce, further giving us some background on Jeremiah and allowing us the chance to get to know more about Jeremiah nefore the transformation, develop the Jeremiah and Bruxe relationship, while also developing the Jerome and Jeremiah relationship, Jerome starts seeding in these crazy ideas to Jeremiah
yeah, i feel that Jeremiahs transformation wouldve been easier to swallow if we had more time to get to know him before his transformation, and having Jerome there during that time would also make it easier for fans to pass the torch, obviously this would lead to big changes in the overall story, but i dont feel like typing for hours so ill just leave it at what i said
the only issue with these changes is that Gotham wouldnt get their '3 Jokers' which seems to be what theyre going for, because in my version, since theres no gas scene, Jeremiah doesnt get this 'in between' Joker time, he just goes from normal Jeremiah right into the chemicals, and thematically i think that makes more sense, but until we see the rest of season 5, we wont know if changing anything is even necessary, because they may have done the exact right thing by doing the 3 jokers, who knows, im excited tho!
    TL;DR
Keep Jerome alive until the first few episodes of Season 5, cut the gas scene, and allow Jeremiah to be fully fleshed out as a character before you transform him into the joker
Great video by the way m8, cheers

I think you could have moved some of jeremiah and jeromes story from season 4 to the later part of season 3, probably removing some of the court of owls story and maybe some stuff of jeromes return stuff. This would have gave us more time for jeremiah to run around the city like jerome did. Plus in season 4, we could get invested in jeremiah like we did his brother, maybe build on his interest for bruce, explain why he did those things to jerome. Then when he goes into ace chemicals, it at least makes you feel something, something I don't feel you could get with jerome going into ace chemicals.

I didn’t like Jerome in the beginning I was more interested in Oswald and Ed probably because I could see why they went trough but while Jerome tells his motives to murder his mother it wasn’t enough for me to empathize with him. But then they introduced Jeremiah and he became my favorite personage. Wouldn’t have been nice if Jerome didn’t die in the episode Jeremiah was introduced and we had more interaction between them I feel like I barely started to understand Jerome when Jeremiah was introduced, too bad they didn’t have time for that then again there are personages I didn’t care at all that appeared for one or two episodes that could have been easily cut to dedicate to a far more interesting narrative. Also it would have been nice to see more Bruce and Jeremiah’s interaction before he was exposed to the toxin because Jeremiah is obsessed with the idea of Bruce which requires previous interaction which we didn’t get to see. Even Ecco deserved more time I really wanted to see what made her shot herself, was it her idea or Jeremiah’s (would have been a very stupid and contra productive idea to risk the life of your secretary/bodyguard/nurse/right hand/and a big etc like this) so I just must assume he didn’t ask for this but I’m very curious to know what pushed her.
Sadly there are a lot of things we will never know for sure, too bad they had the idea of a twin far too late to dedicate more time to develop it properly.

*I think it would of been cool if we were introduce to Jeremiah at season 2 like what u said but instead of being interviewed he could of been working with the gcpd through the rest of series but still have jerome but with this we could get lot more emotional investment with him and see him grow more and more until who he is eventually gonna become therefor making the twist of who’s gonna be the joker a lot more mysterious ambiguous because you already have this crazy and zany character throw in this random guy in mix it’ll create a lot ambiguity*

If I was the show runner, I would’ve made Jerome fall into Gotham’s river so that we could see him crawling out of the river, then meeting Ra’s al Ghul at the river bank. Ra’s then puts Jerome in the Lazarus pits to heal his wounds, and they go steal Jeremiah’s bombs, but we still have Jeremiah being sprayed by the gas. Jerome and Ra’s blow up Gotham, and everything basically happens the way we saw, but with Jerome in Jeremiah’s place. Also Jeremiah doesn’t just immediately go crazy, we see it happen kinda like a slow burn, where sometimes like when he, for instance, is working with Luscious, he imagined Jerome telling him to kill Luscious with a scalpel or something, but of course he denies it. Jerome’s cult completely takes over the dark zone, and he becomes obsessed with Bruce when Ra’s dies, but unlike Jeremiah, he’s trying to make Bruce kill him to become the dark knight. Eventually we get to the ace chemicals episode, but instead of having Jim and Lee hypnotized, it’s Selina and Jeremiah. Thankfully, Alfred stops him and Jerome runs to the chemical plant with Jeremiah and Bruce chasing after him while Alfred and Selina try to stop the bombs (btw when Jerome stole the bombs he took Ecco hostage and drove her crazy). At the chemical plant Bruce knocks Jerome down and keeps punching him, and Jerome begs him to kill him, but Bruce doesn’t and starts to leave, but then Jeremiah takes out a gun and tries to kill Jerome, thinking that it will cure his madness. Jerome knocks the gun out of Jeremiah’s hand and gruesomely cuts up his face. He’s about to kill Jeremiah, but Bruce knocks Jerome off of Jeremiah, leading to Jerome falling into the chemicals.Jeremiah gets his face stitched up and becomes hush, and Ecco gets Jerome out of ace chemicals and Jerome becomes the joker

    • @X-Bones

So, although you can make the point that Jeremiah's transformation isn't over yet, all I have to bring up is 2 things:
    1. What happens if we compare Jerome in season 2 to Jerimiah of season 4.. Give both 3-4 episodes of development.. That way, if we're going don't that route, you could compare season 2 Jerome to season 4 Jeremiah and that should be a more app comparison meeting your standards. With that being said, Jerome would still out Joker Jeremiah and his Lector take.
    Furthermore,
    2. If Jeremiah changes to have more of those qualities that Jerome and or the typical Joker has, than one can ask what made him display them? Maybe i'll eat my words in a month's time when the finale airs; but as of right now.. He either:
a.) acts like he has, like Lector, which is a 180 from the Joker..
    or
b.) he acts more Joker-ish and in doing so pulls a 180 in the established character which is more Lector like..
So what do you wanna do? Move forward with a character exhibiting the wrong traits, or change traits later on confusing the viewers who would wonder why and or HOW he went from acting one way to the complete opposite? Either way.. they backed themselves into a corner.

They are doing this for the last time to do joker and doing this to help with batman get into the show and all because they're ending the show with a ending that they were not going to get but did get to do a ending to everything they have done and they knew that the show had fans and did it for them to look back on that they did a ending to work its way to doing batman who has not been on the show that the show ends with batman and not the way it started with Jim Gordon but end with batman and to be part of the other batman's that have been done so know one can say that he was not done on this show and the reason for keeping Bruce Wayne in the show because everyone else knows that he is to become batman and that you can not do a show with out batman then it would show he was never been born from the start of the season one
