Honey has been used for millennia as a medicine. And even to this day, people swear by it for treating viral illnesses, espousing the antibacterial and immune enhancing effects. But is there any evidence to support this? And if honey is largely made up of just sugar molecules, how can it have these miraculous effects?
Todays episode is a deep dive into what honey is, the chemical make up of honey and a look at some of the studies that have examined gut health, immunity and metabolic health benefits. I’ll reveal whether I think it’s worth taking a spoon of honey every day.
On another episode for UA-cam I’m going to discuss how to choose the best honey, how to spot fake honey on supermarket shelves, as well as taste test different honeys available in supermarkets and online.

Excellent episode, thank you! Coming from a viewpoint where I've had to work really hard to restore my microbiome after treatment, including chemo & 6 months with a stoma, for a small tumour in my colon 5 years ago. Yogurt is one of the things I need to eat almost daily (others are sauerkraut/kimchi, lots of fruit & veg, & a home-fermented drink, usually water kefir, sometimes ginger beer or rhubarb champagne) and plain Greek yogurt works best with just half a teaspoon of honey added! Don't ask me why, but it feels almost soothing & definitely reduces gas & bloating. A couple of days without it & I can feel the difference! However mass-market honey (often half HFCS) doesn't seem to work so I buy locally-produced honey from small (usually back garden) producers, from our local butcher's or farm shop. It's more expensive at about £7 per jar but worth every penny. Even if that's just a placebo effect! It also keeps our neighbours' beehives & other backyard enterprises (beeswax, candles etc.) viable.

I'm allergic to dairy...so I can't eat cows yoghurt, cheese and kefer. It gives me a buildup in the throat phlegm. Wake in the middle choking in thick phlegm.

Hi I was diagnosed with pancreatitis a year ago. I'm not allowed to have refined sugar but I am allowed honey. I have been told that honey can help heal the pancreas to a certain extent and that refined/cane sugar will kill me. I was never told how or why this is but I can say I'm still alive and the honey has worked

Just because you don’t understand why, or it doesn’t fit into current knowledge base, doesn’t mean it’s not true!!
Remember the medical industry told us butter is bad and industrial oil is healthy 😂

Thank you for your studies shared. I am slim and active at 68, still surf a short surfboard now for 50 years. Have used single sourced raw unfiltered honey in my morning coffee for years. Just stoped using it less than a week ago and put cinnamon in my coffee now! I’m not craving sweets and do have vinegar in water before my vegi’s then savory meal at about noon. I don🎉 miss it and feel great!

Be good to know more about manuka honey. Just bought high grade Manuka 860 grade and had to sell a kidney to buy it! Hopefully it’s good to take a tea spoon a day to help inflammation and not just a complete waste of money.

If one takes cinnamon, make sure to get the real thing (Ceylon), not cassia; and be aware that it is on some high-oxylate lists.

I see a book on your bookshelf "Dealing with problem periods". I see it is a recent publication from Jan this year. Do you recommend it? My wife has been dealing with extreme "problem periods" since she was a teenager and we've found no solution. Her mother and 2 sisters suffer too, so it is definitely an inherited problem. She can't function for many days and loses a river of blood at period time.

In your opinion, is raw honey as good, or better than sweetening coffee with a bit of dark amber maple syrup? Both have a lot of sugar, but how do they compare for same amount (ie 1 teaspoon)

Hi Dr Rupy. The environment is very confusing when it comes to sugar. Granulated, raw demerera sugar, coconut sugar etc. It's a minefield of conflicting 'health' information. Would be useful if you could put something together to help ❤❤❤.

I don’t get it. Your recipe called elegant flavanol porridge in your first recipe book, very rich on cacao and flaxseed, has 2 tbsp of honey! I’ve always assumed it was ok because you ate a dr, and also perhaps because it was balanced by the many other nutrients in this recipe. Should j in keep eating this?!

i havs for a long time realized honey was not good for me and thought it might be because od the fructose in honey, which l can smell in my urine . when i was trying to reduce my sugar intake i used maple syrup which i had read had no fructose which l felt was better for me , interested in your opinion - i have now weened myself completely from sugar .-

Honey and dates have probably the highest fructose content, so at least moderation is advised, if not outright abstaining.

How can you compare a highly refined product, namely white sugar and something like raw honey? This baffles me when it comes to you Drs. Same goes for maple syrup which if full of minerals etc. Should we limit their use? Yes! That's why the two tablespoons of honey in the study kind of blew me away. It would have been more useful if they came down at least one tbsp. and compare the results. I would be hesitant to eat 2 tbsp. of honey every day. Loved the episode.
