It reminds me so much of the old Heavy Metal magazine....well in the 80's. It is in my que of things I plan to buy. Thanks for giving me more fuel to purchase it.
D40: Roll 1d20 and 1d6 at the same time. If d6 result is 1-3 the d20 result stands. If the d6 result is 4-6 add +20 to the d20 result. 1-3 on the d6 gives you the 1-20 range. 4-6 on the d6 gives you 21 the 40 range.
I discovered the benefits to the board gaming "sequence of play" recently. I'm playing Sentinel Comics RPG solo and it has a turn pattern that is heavily influenced by the card game it's based on. The idea that every round each character does SOMETHING on their turn that impacts play really keeps the game moving and dynamic.
Glad you came back to it! UVG is one of my favorite settings, esp when mixed with things like Numenera, some stuff from Troika! (e.g. Acid Death Fantasy). Never thought about SEACAT as a solo system though...
such a piece of art! love seeing this book get covered. unlike troika, this single book does offer so much to roll on and roll with! love the coverage of the more strange and zany books!
Yes I have that game and have struggled to find a way to solo it easily, despite that unique mechanic. I planned a vid on it for a while but am unsure as to how to best present it. The book is lovely, however.
I already like the concept. It reminds me of my WIP novella series, a fantasy kitchen sink filled with everything that inspired me with a science fantasy twist.
I have this book. I haven’t played a game with it yet, but I am planning on it when I do a sci-fi campaign. I just keep looking at the artwork though, such a gorgeous art style.
Yehey! My most requested video has finally happened!:) Looking forward to seeing you do actual play with UVG in a future video. Happy Thanksgiving to you.:)
And a Happy Thanksgiving to you. I'm glad I got around to covering something you requested. It's been on the list for a while but I had to get over the loss of my first go at it.
I'd be curious to see the ideas around "board gamifying" an RPG for solitaire expanded upon into something one could use to create their own set of procedures/turn sequences to play their favorite RPGs that might lack one. I can think of several solitaire games with this approach to play: Zozer Games' SOLO (and the newer HOSTILE: SOLO) contains a set of several procedures for solitaire play using Traveller. Two Hour Wargames 5150 (and their Zombie, Pulp, and Fantasy lines) New Beginnings also has a set of procedures one plays through each turn. Corellian Smuggler (an old Dan Verssen game in Shadis magazine) also had a daily turn sequence for his Star Wars themed RPG. The Drifter is probably falls into this category. I've had much more success playing these games than just picking my favorite RPG off-the-shelf but I'd love to be able to abstract what these games are doing well and be able to create my own frameworks games that are lacking them.
I think you can make your own sequence of play for any RPG if that’s what you want to do… you’d just need to know the rules well enough and also have a rule set robust enough to handle it. I will be doing a vid in the coming weeks with an RPG r that has lots of subsystems upon which one could hang a procedure.
Thanks for the in depth look! I was also curious how it works so this has been quite helpful. In all honesty you probably sold a hard copy to me eventually. Looks beautiful and useful
One thing to give even more versatility is that you don’t need to, say 1d40, a whole table in one shot. You can 1d40 the first column. Then 1d40 the second column. Then 1d40 the third column. Not all of the tables make sense with this method, but most multi-column tables do. With this, instead of having just 40 options, you know have 64,000 options.
Just found the hardback version of UVG and love it 🥰 The artwork and writing are stellar - And it has soooo many tables to use for so many things 🥰 Ty ty for making this episode - Well done and really helps with ideas and questions Ive had 🥰 Love Geek Gamers - Ty ty so much 🥰 For the 'Other Voyagers' table - I rolled the d100 for EACH column to create the NPC - Works great 🥰
Glad you enjoyed the vid and I know how frustrating it is that things are sold out! That happens to me too but sometimes if you wait long enough you can find it.
Yes, I already had the PDF when your video came out and getting a print copy was on my "to do" list; I clicked the link but Exalted Funeral is sold out and it seems to be the sole source for print copies. I'm sure they will have another print run, though. I also tried secondary markets and other vendors. Hey that just means it's more likely to get a reprint! I was talking with some friends of mine who play the older "Mutant Epoch" system, which can generate some truly bonkers characters, and told them I thought UVG would be the perfect setting to go with it. Not Mutant Crawl Classics but Mutant Epoch. They have that at DTRPG as a PDF and you can order print on demand also.
This looks like one of those books that's incredibly hard to get a hold of. There's a ton of books out there that I'd be willing to pay handsomely for if they were just available.
@@exhead1972 I have done the same myself here in the States but the copying cost now is getting prohibitive. This has prevented me from putting things on the channel as I can't work with pdf's only...
Been loving my read through the Solo GM Guide. I was wondering if you where to get something a book or rule set for a solo rpg player for a Christmas gift what would you get them.
Well (hah) I would get them a copy of my solo GM guide. :) Other options would really depend on what they want to do. For something guided perhaps d100 Dungeon; for something “like” D&D but with oracles and solo support, Scarlet Heroes; for an actual solo-designed game maybe 12 Years, and for something a bit different where you play a small band of heroes, Rangers of the Midden Vale. I have vids of all of these on my channel.

I've seen it but don't own it. For some reason I decided it wasn't for me, but I can't remember why right now! I don't have plans to cover it but I will put it on a list to look up again to see if whatever reasons I had for not buying it are still in play.

I just played my first UVG session last night, and it's such an engaging system. Looking forward to my trip to the Black City.

Could just roll a d4 and d10, treat the 4 as 0 on the d4.

thank you so much for reviewing this. very very interested for me and my friends to group play
Drive Thru RPG has a watermarked pdf and the publisher, Exalted Funeral, has a non-watermarked pdf available for sale.
And as I mention in the vid description the designer himself is giving away about 70 pages of it as a pdf

Your comments about using gaming elements differently in solo RPGs is making my brain itch in an interesting fashion.
I have tons of solo RPG content on the channel… you can look thru vids on my solo RPG playlist for more -
(What makes Jack Vance so important to RPGs is that he depicts one situation after another that is intensely gameable. Gygax knew this.)
I love Jack Vance
There is a Japanese TTRPG called Ryutama that gives the GM a special character with powers that can be used in game.

The initial Kickstarter offered this in a hardback edition. So, yes, hardback is out there. Good luck finding it though.
I was thinking about Gamma World this week, for solo, but did want to go back to the old system. UGV is exactly want I wanted.
Great art in this. Still not sure how I feel about it as a game supplement. But I love looking at it.
The art and overall layout is extremely well done. The content and 'feel' of the world(s) may not be for everyone.
I can see where it's tables and point crawl nature might work well with solo.
@@GeekGamers01 the world, ideas and fiction are great! I pretty much enjoy it simply as a work of fiction.
