- When Ford announced a new Mustang - an all-electric crossover Mustang called the 'Mach-E' - the automotive world didn't quite know what to think. Some screamed 'blasphemy', and some saw a true Tesla rival. So, we sent Top Gear magazine's Head of Car Testing Ollie Marriage to find out what the newest member of the Mustang family is really like.

Ford's plan is to make the Mustang a stand-alone brand; like Lincoln, or like Dodge did with the Ram. There will be several models (electric and otherwise) under the Mustang badging.
Funny how many people have forgotten this information. Thanks for reminding folks!
I still think they should have left the Mustang name alone and just called it the Mach E SUV, then they can make the Mach E sedan, Mach E coupe etc. Calling this thing a Mustang is almost as bad as when the Mustang II was considered a Mustang.
@@breakingcycles741 Agree completely.
Mustang Pickup when
I hate that idea, I wish they leave the precious stangs alone 😞
Good to see Brian Cranston making a comeback since Breaking Bad
Good spot. 🤣
He is the one that drives
Did a decent review as well. Liked him.
Oh, I thought he is Ollie Marriage (per the explanatory notes below the video). But, yes, such a clear review. Anyone but Rix.
It only took stealing an English accent to do it!
Ford missed a trick in not calling it the Galax-E
that would actually be a much nicer car i think
Screw that, call it the THUNDERBIRD

@@dukebop Ford Thunderbird GT sounds soooooo fucking good
Ford Model E
Saw one 2 days ago here in San Diego. I was taken back right away as I never heard about Mach E. It was pretty slick to say the least.
Calling it Mustang got people (including _Top Gear_ ) to pay attention. If it were Mondeo or Taurus would it be all over the review sites as it is today? I doubt it.
Yep, it worked perfectly well for Porsche with the Cayenne, petrolheads hated that at the time, and now look how successful they are.
@@TheRichardHonor the problem with that is Porsche is actually a brand so adding an SUV to the brand doesn’t really matter. Mustang is a model, not a brand. It would be like Porsche calling the Cheyenne the 911 instead.
@@KCViner well in the same manner the taycan has a turbo badge on it
@@danalexandru5935 Exactly. Branding and marketing is simply that. Each product ultimately succeeds or fails on its own merits. e.g., Mustang II
If it were called Taurus, it won't get a single review in the UK. Even as a bath tub, it was godawful.
I can understand them making an electric Mustang. I just don't understand them making it an SUV.
I can understand them making an electric SUV.
I just don't understand them making it a Mustang.
It's a more practical shape when the floor is covered with batteries. It means the whole vehicle has to sit up a bit higher (like an SUV). The Crossover trend is highly convenient for EV development.
@@TimLucasdesign Oh okay. Well that makes sense
@@barsaldemir5091 I think it's because they know that calling it a Mustang will bring free publicity
money, greed, survival. that sort of a thing.
What a great review, well produced. Seems like a pretty good car, shame I can’t afford it. Don’t give a toss that they’re using the Mustang name.
After the first few catch on fire, there will be big discounts.
@@divadriver oh we've got a comedian, how delightful. 🙂
And you are a bullshit. I will buy a fully loaded Mustang Mach-E 4X Premium anyway.
@@RichardJoashTan He said that he doesn't care that they're calling it a mustang. Read properly and improve your grammar.
Ford had said they called it Mustang because they wanted to find a way to keep it alive even after ICE engines are long gone. And they used the CUV layout because it’s the most efficient way to have the largest battery possible without compromising the sportiness, and a way to compete with the Model Y. There are plans to have a traditional coupe layout as an EV, but it would have to have a smaller battery due to being smaller. It seems to make more sense why they did the name (other than marketing) but calling it just Mach-E would’ve sufficed
I actually quite like this reviewer! I know he isnt Chris Harris but i like bis style. He gets his points across and Shows really well what the car is About.
That is one good looking Mustang Mach-E. Love the new pony in the stable.
its a bit of a fat pony

I'm glad Carol Shelby didn't have to see this thing with a Mustang badge.

@Kristian Angelov Did you know him well?
And have you seen all the Chrysler products he put his name on in the 80's?
I'm sure he'd be fine with it.
Shelby did come up with the mustang so why would he care.
"settings go on and on"...then page doesn't even scroll... Come on man. That was like 1 page of settings.
Seems pretty standard in cars in the 30 grand range. Nothing really new here.
Who else wanted a Chris Harris review on this
Too true
Yeah bit of a shame
Will probably get it on top gear next year 👍🏼
That's why I clicked!
He would have stated what he thought of this car by taking a poop in the "frunk" and walking off, review over!
I did'nt noticed up untill mid video i was watching top gear 😄😄 miss the trio
It's not even close to the same. It feels like a boring youtube car and driver episode. Clarkson, May, and Hammond made you feel like you were watching a moment
the thing I hate about the car is that I don't own one
And that it's called a Mustang, why do that?
@@Александр-у8й6д idk just because I want one even though it doesn't look like a mustang
Nice to see Mr Bronson from Grange Hill working again. Great reviewer he is too 🤟🏻 Really like the car and would take this over either of the two mentioned
"But at least, is doing some interesting". The future of automovilism.
Sad, boring, silent, uniformized future. At least we will have piston cars a couple times a year, in old school meetings and Goodwood.
3:22 “it’s a Mustang right so the most important thing is how it drives”. No. It’s how it sounds, how it rumbles, how you can feel the soul of the car from the engine through the transmission, how you feel you’re driving an icon. Not just another electric SUV, which is what this looks like, making a cash grab.
Completly true .
This is not a MUSTANG!!
@@gregdales4701 true .
Even more general than that, its not a fucking SUV. This car shows how lazy ford has gotten and its disgusting.
Speaking as an American, "Untamed" seems much better than "Unbridled".
Definitely...
I like unbridled a lot more. I think it plays to the mustang brand a lot better. An untamed horse is simply wild, while an unbridled horse has been let loose.
@@brofist1959 Agreed.
But electric cars are tame.

Heisenberg is alive after all!
Why they didn’t bring back the “Thunderbird” name for this, we might never know...

Where did 370 mile range come from? Car & Driver Mustang Mach E rear wheel extended range is 300 mile EPA range. The Mach E AWD standard range model is 211 miles. Tesla Model Y range is still the most in the small SUV class of 326 mile EPA.
I am on board with this over Tesla.
I am with you
Ditto
I have a Tesla, and this Mach E looks quite good. The one thing, for me, that holds me back from a lot of the other brands, is how good the supercharger network is. If third-party charging infrastructure expands to be as cost effective, abdundant, and convenient as the superchargers, I think my options will certainly expand.
Well, if I was in the market for an ev I would take this over the crap build Tesla anytime.
I mean you've got a point
And Mustang is an iconic name that people will look at anyway, even put it on their short list to test drive. Those people that mentally shutdown at the word Tesla and wouldn't even consider that, but this they will.
Atleast body lines are even and no mismatch body lines and orange peal paint job..crappy craftsmanship..yes talikng about tesla
It looks quite nice. The Tesla looks like a 1990s Toyota.
The first electric car that feels like it has a soul.
Hopefully first of many. Personally I had interest in the upcoming Ariya, Ioniq 5 or EV6, but I keep coming back to the Mach E...it doesn’t feel like an appliance
Electric cars never get a soul ha ha!
1st electric car from Ford not bad. I can't wait to see F-150 :)
So a door lever isn’t a door handle? I never knew that.
It’s a lever in England.
Seems a bit unnecessary. Wait until it goes wrong.. And being a Ford it will... And you'll want a simple door handle.
It's nice to see another electric car choice! Love the idea of a crossover SUV as there aren't many electric car choices in that category. And the price is pretty good for this category.
Where is the Mustang Mini Van?
Just next to the stationwagon...
Don’t worry there’s a mustang sedan and fighter jet too

I've owned three Fords and all of them developed electrical problems. Excuse me if the idea of an electric car from Ford doesn't excite me.
Just imagine if Lucas had anything to do with it!
I actually like this car, even with the Mustang name.
I love mustang
Mach E is also good
Cheap price in india at 34lakh to 48lakh

Thanku for mustang
One day i have mustang car .
The thing about the lack of a Ford badge is a Mustang thing. I've owned the last two iterations of Mustang, and you have to work very hard to find the blue oval anywhere on the car.
I have one too. Only on the keys and hub covers
I can imagine some people will struggle with that awful door handle idea
True but it’s not terrible. I bet you open the door after half way using the side of the door anyways.
Dude just imagine if they made this with the 50 and cobra engines! Would be easier to explain to mustang faithful
They could've just called it Mach E and made everyone happy.
Agreed, love everything about it but the name. Mach E sounds great. Mustang sounds forced and cheap.
U all wont understand anything because U are all not paying attention.
The general trend of car buying has gone from hatch, sedans to compact and medium size SUVs
2nd the Mustang Mach E needs to have big battery. For big battery only range can be as high or at least competitive to Tesla Y. But if they are making a coupe the range will be lower as Fords CD4 that spawns the Mach E chassis does not have sufficient room for big battery. So obvious choice s make it a Mach E. So it ll ve competitive range.
3rd s Ford still plans to make V8 Mustangs. According to emission rules a car fleet should ve average 30+ mpg otherwise it ll be forced to be scrapped. So with Mach E having 98 mpge even if Fords V8 Mustang has 10 mpg the official certified fleet mpg of Mustang brand will be 40+ giving Ford considerable room to make V8 Mustangs in future
Best review I’ve read so far
Try out of spec studios
“When you’re driving along with a touchscreen it’s difficult...”. So true, and yet manufacturers seem to be engaged in an arms race to equip cars with assist/mitigation technologies and simultaneously provide enough driver distractions for those technologies to become far more necessary. It might look impressive in the showroom but as a driving enthusiast there’s far more information than I actually need to enjoy a good drive. EVs are already expensive enough, how about removing some of this unnecessary bling to make these things more affordable to the mainstream buyer?
Yeah, very true.
Hopefully by turning off some settings on this thing people can conserve power, like turning off wi-fi and lowering the screen brightness on a smart phone
I totally agree. On top of that I think these huge screens look not very good at all and they are horrible to use. Ever thought about why fighter jet cockpits have so many individual buttons? Because first of all it is much easier to hit a physical button or switch in a moving vehicle and second, it is much less distrackting if you don't need to dive through several menu pages to get to a desired setting. Especially with things like climate control. I don't understand why they have this huge 24" or so screen but no separate physical buttons and dials for the climate control, which is something one has to adjust quite often.
@@Blockbuster2033 - tactile controls for important functions win they day for me, if they’re well designed you can find them and use them without needing to look away from the road ahead. I don’t need an oversized iPad stuck to the dash to know how fast I’m going and when I’m going to need more fuel.
@@SurprisinglyDeep you do realize how much energy is stored in the battery right? You can power all the lights, screen and pumps without using HVAC and the car will run for 1 whole year. Imagine 5000 smartphone batteries.

This is one of my pet hates. Stupid giant touch screens. They look cheap, badly thought out and awful. How is it fine to be looking at that and pressing buttons but not a phone? It’s just a giant phone. I’ll stick to cars with nice simple elegant dashboards and instruments with real buttons.

I doubt it, 99% of the time in freezing conditions you need the door handles to "work" the doors open.
@@RW-zh7kl The Mach-E's doors have automatic pushers that extend to open the doors when the button is pushed (and keep the doors from closing on fingers). The pushers retract once the door is pulled open further.
I love my ICE cars but I’ve driven the Taycan Turbo S and like it or not, e-cars are going to replace everything. This is an obvious and insulting misbranding by Ford but I give them props for being the only one of the US Big 3 to challenge Tesla.
Someone with a brain, damn that took a while to find!

I own a Tesla Model 3. I love the car. But the Mustang Mach E is an excellent car also, I would definitely considered it if I needed a small SUV. Buyers will also get a total of 7500K tax credit depending on your income. I only got 2500K off my taxes, because I didn’t make 100K income. I’m very excited to see Ford make this EV. I just object to the name Mustang. Call it the Mach E Galvanic. It’s a way better name. Galvanic means, relating to or involving electric currents produced by chemical reactions. Mustang should be reserved for the gas engine car. Definitely a bonehead move to use that name on a total different model car. It just shows you how insecure Ford was on making the Mach E, having to use the Mustang brand to help sell it. Just like only producing 50K of them in Mexico. Ford definitely doesn’t believe in making all electric cars yet. That’s to bad. They will just end up bankrupt at this pace.

The original 64 1/2 Mustang coupe was a bargain-basement Lincoln Continental MK2. That was its style, and it sold in terrific numbers to young people who couldn’t afford a Lincoln. Young people today don’t want a budget Lincoln, but they would love a discount Tesla.
