The audio gets out of sync around 14 minutes but is fixed about a minute later. It's fine in the project file so something happened during export or UA-cam processing *shrug*. Sorry!
To learn how to charge more efficiently on road trips follow Bjorn Nyland (especially his 1,000 km challenge series) and Tom Moloughney on this site. Short answer: arrive at charger with less 'in the tank' and leave with just enough to get to the next charger. (and don't block 350 chargers w/ a car that can only take 150)
It happens and boy did that happen in the best spot. Because you are right, range is masking another problem with the EV discussion and that is infrastructure and maintenance. That is a hard ass topic at the best of times because I am a 90's boy and all these gas stations just exist, there was a time where that wasn't the case and EV's are at that starting point, which doesn't help when one maker uses a proprietary plug for its charging network but that is another topic.
A cheap tesla3 fixes the TWO problems mentioned in this video. Autopilot + charging network. At $32k cpo (and depreciating) its hard to beat for an errand boring daily driver. I also agree they should never be referred to as “M3” or “Mustang”
Ive missed Matt doing this format so much. This is how I knew him as a teenager in the late 2000s, sadly things changed around 2013 and he had to quit with the film making. Like you said, He may have just been too ahead of his time, or maybe the pendulum has just swung back in our favor.
I'm liking this format. I know you guys said on the podcast that it isn't bringing in the dollars you'd like, so here's me doing my part to up your engagement numbers. The storytelling aspect is great, makes a nice compliment to the free-flowing nature of a podcast discussion. BTW "Totally logitech" took me by surprise and made me laugh out loud. Cheers.
You're 100% correct that if you have a non-Tesla EV relying on the CCS network, it's charging anxiety. I'm not even going to say infrastructure anxiety, because even if the infrastructure is 100%, you still have to deal with people at the charger. Be that lines, people done and not moving their car, using the wrong charging apparatus (i need 350kW because it's fast...even though my car can only charge at 150kW max), etc. Thanks for the full review of your car.
"using the wrong charging apparatus (i need 350kW because it's fast...even though my car can only charge at 150kW max)". Yes Matt, this. mach-e should never be blocking a 350kW dispenser.
Infrastructure Anxiety is 100% spot on. I had a 300k trip in a Nissan Leaf which turned into a total disaster. Chargers missing from where they should be, chargers vandalised or not working, it was a total nightmare and has put me off switching until Ireland has a reliable charger network.
People used to be so idiotic about charging ports. When they started putting them in Texas, grown men were destroying the ports and laughing about it because they thought EVs were lame. I’ve been on the fence about getting one, but I’m really leaning toward getting a used Mach E this year.
Great watch. One thing - I noticed an audio/video de-sync start around 13:30 and get real bad by close to 15mins. Not sure what happened there, but great informative video otherwise!
As a long time fan I enjoy this long form/story content and the one takes equally! I understand YT is a business so whatever you guys decide to proceed with, I'll be watching! Thanks for making great car content for so long.
Hey, quick tip from own Mach E ownership experience (22 AWD extended range). If you find an EA station with a 350 charger that has the reduced power screen, but there are 150’s available - take the 150. I started on the 350 with roughly the same state of charge as you, and was getting about 80kWh - then switched to a 150 station after a few minutes. Rate shot up to 120kWh for a while. Was glad I swapped. Thanks for the video! Loved it.
If the Mustang Mach e accepts 150kw and you plug into a potential 350kw charger you will never realize that level power. Even if the charger is rated at 150-350 kw it also depends on your state if charge. Max charging speeds is only possible at lower levels if charge and it will throttle back as the charge level in the battery builds. But this video is a yr old so I guess you've figured this out by now. Further you charged to 86% it's likely not the most efficient level to charge to. You need to plan your trip where it's likely charging what you "need" is possibly faster than aiming at really high levels of charge. It could be,,, stopping twice for 15 min is better than once for 40 min. Use A Better Route Planner and the route creation is really good. Also set a charge location in your car nab system and then set a backup nearby in your phone. Sounds like a hassle but the backup provides for less stress. Finally while it's nice to go 80mph and just power on if you can see your way to the speed limit or a tiny bit less you will likely get there faster if you need one less stop. Convenient? Nope, but a routine makes EV use not as frustrating while the infrastructure evolves. 👍
Great video Matt! One major gripe though. As a Taycan owner, there’s nothing worse than pulling up to a charging station when multiple 150kw chargers are free and there’s a Mach-E (which tops out at 150kw) or an iD4 (which also tops out of 150kw) taking up one of or both of the 350kw chargers. PLEASE, I beg, EV owners out there- you need to know the charging profiles of your cars so you don’t inconvenience others. It’s not as cut-and-dry as a gas station.
Agreed! .. and especially, 50KW max Bolts, and also VW id.4 charging up to 100% on free charging... use the slow chargers, for the benefit of others! (curious, if the slow 80kw first charge stop, might have gone faster on the 150kw stall if existed?)
Yes, it's very frustrating with people like this UA-camr who doesn't even understand that he doesn't benefit from a 350kw charger and that the 80kw he is charging at is due to his battery, not the EA charger!
As a Ford sales consultant... the window issue is very easy to reprogram yourself. Just hold the button until it stops at the top, then release and hold it again for 5 seconds. Then repeat the same process going down. It trains the motor to recognize what fully closed and fully open are.
Drives back & forth from northern to southern Calif show that Ford’s charging network is FAR superior to Teslas.. hours loooong lines for the teslas. No wait for Ford’s Electrify America super chargers & level 2 chargers
One thing I'll add is that living in the middle of the northeast conurban sprawl, the charging network is not bad. And the Ford plug and charge system has worked more or less flawlessly the few times I've used it with EA but with a couple hiccups with EVGo and Blink. Like Matt we do 90+% of our charging at home.
I loved your point about “infrastructure anxiety”. It’s the number one thing I’m researching. I want and EV but I’m terrified that I’ll be caught in some kind of nightmare trying to find a charger that works.
Yes, that's the best way to put it. It's not about range, it's about charge access (both finding them and time/availability when you do). I'm looking at a Mach-E as a possible right now, and very much impressed with the vehicle. I'm just not sure if a pure EV works for my lifestyle.
Much prefer this format. Very obvious that the more lengthy editing process permits you guys to be painstaking/precise with your choices in presentation (though it makes stuff like the audio sync problem even more frustrating). The most significant part of this video is the intellectual leap from 'range anxiety' to 'infrastructure anxiety.' Matt is absolutely correct about this and the enthusiast community needs to push that message. Great video!
The 81kw is not necessarily due to EA throttling....since you are charging your battery at 40% SOC, more than likely the 81kw is due to the Mach E programming preventing too much juice from getting to the battery and overheating/hurting it. EVs like these have a pre-determined charge curve algorithm to maintain battery health.
It's not perfect, but we love ours. I'm definitely glad we chose the Mach-E over other options. We've done several road trips and it has been fantastic.
This was a good retrospective and road trip experience. There really isn't much content out there of RWD ERs so it was cool to see. Matt's road trip needs pretty much mirror my own in as much as I don't usually do more than 200 miles at a time. His recommendation at the end was spot on: Get the car you want. He'd get the MME again.
We have 43,000 miles on our Mach E , and 24,000 miles on our model 3. Both are a little over 2 years old. The Mach e has become our preferred vehicle. We love it.
@@Cruor34 my wife has a 110 mile work commute and we road trip a lot. It adds up. FYI just got back from a 4400 mile road trip visiting Yosemite NP , Olympic NP Victoria, Vancouver, Whistler, Jasper NP, Banff NP and Yellowstone NP. Life’s good!
@@irfanhusein1445 Ok I do not intend this to be mean but how does she tolerate a 110 mile commute? I would actually choose death before that. I can't even imagine the agony. My commute is 13 miles and I am getting grey hair over it. People texting while driving, driving slow in the passing lane, cutting me off THEN going slower than I was going, eating and doing makeup while driving, taking too long to go when the light goes green and accelerating at the pace of sap moving down a tree. Its a nightmare. Why not just move closer to work? I am as close as I can get, I work on a base surrounded by farm land, but the road to and from is horrible. The road trip I could do, but daily commute is horrible. I liked driving through New Mexico at 3 am, was just 90+ mph the whole way through a desert no police no other drivers. Just me and the full moon. Thats ok, but East coast/west coast driving is a nightmare.
Some audio sync issues between 13:30 and 15:30 just fyi. Doesn't really impact the video but thought id mention it in case you can fix it easily. Great review!
Electrify America sucks. You nailed it with infrastructure anxiety. I've taken my i4 on a few short trips that require charging and it's maddening. Chargers that randomly lose connection after 1 or 2 minutes, chargers that are supposed to deliver 150+Kwh and they deliver 50-60. Just ridiculous.
Great video, Matt! I always enjoy long-term reviews like these because you get the kind of info that is truly useful if you are looking to own the vehicle in question. I'm glad to hear it's held up pretty well, though I am surprised by the buttons rubbing off. Probably some kind of supplier issue that hopefully has been improved. Shame about the chargers, but we all know how that goes...I do wonder how long it will take for the charging network to become as reliable as putting gas in a gas tank.
The window up and down issue is not just a Mach e issue. I’ve owned 3 mustangs, a 2013 v6, a 2014 gt, and now a 2013 gt500. My wife’s 2019 escape has done it intermittently as well. They ALL have this issue, particularly if you time the roll up with an electrical event (AC compressor turning on, ignition turning off, radiator fans turning on) my more mechanically inclined friends pointed out it’s the window triggering a high/low load/voltage on the motor, basically simulating someone’s hand being stuck in the crack while rolling up so it panics and rolls the window back down to prevent harm. Strange they still haven’t fixed it
Some Teslas have reported similar issues as well, after NHTSA or whatever made them adjust finger-pinch settings... may just be too sensitive? or dual-pane front windows are heavier and motor works harder? My older 2018 Tesla has no issues.
Thank you for the great video. I really appreciated how you separated range anxiety and infrastructure anxiety despite the best efforts of Electrify America. The pacing around at the charging station was a great way to show how lame the charging time can be in real life on a out-of-town trip even with a well planned route. Meanwhile there was a shot of the ICE cars smoking you time-wise even though you were speeding excessively. You just hook your ICE to the pump, go into the gas station to do #1, and come back to a fully fueled ICE car and go while you laugh at the Teslas stuck at the charging stations. EVs are for home charging and driving around the city.
Just wanna thank you because I was going to buy this vehicle back in 2021 and I remember watching your videos and it swayed me against it. What I thought then still holds true. This car and EVs in general, require a certain lifestyle which they can fit well in. That isn't my life because I do a ton of long distance travel and charging scared the heck outta me... as you so eloquently explained... it's an infrastructure problem and the vendors have to step it up. Thanks for all of your work on this Matt!
Matt I felt this one on many levels... I own a 2022 VW ID4 and had put 21K miles on it in 7 months. I totally agree with 10/10 with the infrastructure issues. Luckily I do the majority of my driving in and around Baltimore as well as up and down the i95 corridor and don't have as many EA charger issues.
How do you put on 21k miles in 7 months (unless you are a traveling salesman?) My 5 year old F150 which I bought in Maryland btw, has 26,000 miles on it. I can't even imagine the nightmare of driving 12k miles a year never mind 35-40k. (I assume from 21k in 7 months) especially in that area. I95 can be 95 mph or it can be gridlock traffic.
My wife and I just bought a 2023 model Y. Their interface (even though we were disappointed with no Apple Carplay) is quite superior and i don’t miss having CarPlay. We have also used multiple Tesla super chargers that worked flawlessly. I think for now, Tesla has the upper hand. Build quality is the definite negative of Tesla, which we still saw in a 2023.
I’m rather impressed with 16k miles in two years given your range of cars you and your wife can choose from and general commute distance. That’s impressive.
I like the Mach E as a value proposition vs the model Y because: higher quality build, availability of siriusxm, in 2024 access to Tesla Supercharger network + Bluecruise availability/subscription with all trims! And yes, the issue with non-teslas in infrastructure anxiety not range!
Fun video .... Just one tip on the CarPlay issues: Ford appears to have fixed these bugs with the latest UX update it looks like you just received. CarPlay launches much more reliably after the 4.1.x OTA. I found no issues after unpairing phone and car and then re-pairing CarPlay with the new UX. Prior to the new UX (the one with the "home" button in the upper left) CarPlay connectivity could be flaky, and sometimes it would find one phone and not another one.
@@ryandoyle4344 I don't think so -- CarPlay connectivity bugs were known issues with the Power Up 3.5.x software OTA updates -- Ford seems to have fixed them with the 4.x updates, but I found they require you to unpair / repair your phone to work reliably
@@TheSmokingTire bummer, mine's been solid recently. when it was misbehaving, rebooting the system got it working again (hold vol down + top fwd seek button that's pealed off on your steering wheel for 10 sec) -- of course you shouldn't have to do this, but maybe your earlier build than mine has a part in this one
Matt, I'm 7 months and 6000 miles into my 2022 Mach-E GT ownership. I use CarPlay with a cable, and the only issue I've had has been occasionally needing to manually trigger the connection from the Phone menu. I also haven't had the same issue with emergency braking. Not doubting your experience, just adding a bit of anecdata. I have yet to take mine on a road trip where I've needed public charging, but since my roadtrips will generally be in the Boston-Washington corridor, I don't expect problems. Thank you for the detailed ownership report. Use it in continued good health!
Great review. For comparison, I do a ~780 mile round trip every few months with my Model Y and its essentially boring. No range anxiety, no infrastructure or charger anxiety. It all just works perfectly every time. I'm a huge EV fan in general and want all the OEMs to succeed. But there is no denying how much better the supercharger network is in the current EV landscape.
This entire video was one big ad for the company that shall not be named. They couldn't have paid for a better ringing endorsement of the vastly superior Supercharger network and Autopilot.
Great video. I LOVE legit, honest long-term reviews. With respect to Carplay, I have 3 cars, all different makes, and all with Wireless Carplay. All three have intermittent problems, some more aggravating than others. My BMW (my daily) is probably the worst offender while my 2022 F-150 has been reasonably solid. I have noticed that when I migrated to the iPhone 14, those problems did not abate. In fact, they feel like they've actually worsened. I would be curious if Android users have had problems with Android Auto. I'm beginning to believe it could be a problem w/iPhone internals more than anything else.
We bought my wife the premium, long range, AWD Mach E in November. All in, a great car. She loves it. Her work has her driving 40-80 miles a day and we just charge it overnight on a 240V outlet in our garage. No issue. We have my ‘20 Explorer ST for actual road trips. Same issue with CarPlay on the ME. 1/10, maybe more, it struggles to connect. Plugging in USB seems a bit better. Interestingly, the one generation older system in my Explorer is a bit more reliable.
I 100% agree with Matt on range vs infrastructure anxiety. I know Matt doesn’t like Tesla much (lol) but that’s one thing I’ve never had with my Tesla model 3. I’m excited that Ford and GM have struck a deal with Tesla to use their chargers. It opens up the choice to consumers tbh. Now I can venture out and try other EV brands.
If all these electric cars are soulless appliances for commuting and to serve a utilitarian purpose, I would 1000% get a tesla on the basis of charging infrastructure and quality alone. I drive a 328d touring and can add 1000 km of range in sub 5 min, this would be infuriating.
As a viewer from the early days of this channel and Garage 419. I'm so glad to see the long form content back. This is what I know you for. Not saying the one takes werent good, they are. But this stuff is my favorite stuff you do. Its absence was greatly missed.
For all of Tesla‘s issues, the fact that they focused on and built out their own charging net work, because they didn’t want to rely on someone else doing it for them is forever their own advantage. Their prices are way cheaper than all the other charging companies, I can’t believe that some of those charge more than it would cost to fill up a tank of gas. And I cannot tell you the struggle that I’ve had showing neighbors on the new Volkswagen ID4 how to charge their car - and so many of the Chargers are out of service, don’t charge anywhere near the advertised rate or you can’t get it to work/pay
They were very heavily subsidized and given opportunities by the American government that other Brands could not avail of. Elon is a master of "convincing" and/or political chess behind the scenes to get what he wants without actually paying for it. Exactly what a Con does best. I personally do not like a infrastructure that only caters to one brand. If gas stations did this, it would have hindered ICE considerably. Tesla isn't very good at building cars, and that is evident within 5 mins of driving one. But they do have the infrastructure nailed down and if they were to focus on that, the one thing they really are good at, they wouldn't even need to sell cars.
I was never against EVs but also wasn't excited about them. After detailing for a long time I've noticed that high quality interiors clean nicely, if a material starts disintegrating from the mildest cleaners it's basically cheap junk. After cleaning a Mach-E I was pretty impressed with the interior quality, it was a family car so it was pretty dirty but cleaned up nicely, and looked like a premium quality interior once cleaned. Also it was very simple and intuitive to turn off the touch screen to clean, and it stayed off while cleaning, I've noticed some new car touch screens are touch to turn on even in cleaning mode (BMW) which is very silly.
I appreciate this fair and honest review. I’m an EV enthusiast but I always tell my friends and anyone who wants to hear it that you shouldn’t buy one to save the planet. You’re buying one for other reasons or simply because you like it. I hate using gas. I hate oil companies. That’s my thing. I don’t care or judge if it’s not your thing. And I can see myself still buying an ICE vehicle because I really want a little 2 seat convertible. I also love the fact that you point out bigger batteries and better range is not the answer.
*Imagine pulling up to a Gas Station and they tell you "sorry the pumps are not working, your going to have to use a Teaspoon and scoop your fuel in from this shared Bucket"*
oh and P.S currently electric cars are predominately used by white collar relatively level headed adults... wait till the blue collars have to start using EV's.... think..WALMART level crazies
We’ve had our Premium 4X since Oct of 21 and love it. Unfortunately in the middle and southern part of the US, there isn’t the infrastructure needed to be able to road trip the car. You are so right about infrastructure anxiety. That is the problem. We have batteries. We need infrastructure.
Nope. I’ll stick with my well-maintained 2007 BMW 335i with JB4 tune, hydraulic steering, beautiful power delivery, and NO computer screens. We’re going through a transitional period now where a lot of things have gotten worse. Eventually things will get sorted out. I’ll sooner buy a 2010 Porsche 911 turbo before I buy some new garbage computer car.
If you are going to get an EV just get a Tesla. Yes Elon sucks but the car itself is superior to all other available EVs. This is because this is all that Tesla does this has been 100% of their focus since inception. Ford, GM, etc are just making EVs to not be left behind.
What about the build quality? The gaps in panels on every model? The 1-4 month wait time for absolutely menial maintenance appointments? No apple car play / android auto still in 2024? They too, are maddening. Just for different reasons
I feel like there’s a potential for someone to install legitimate 350kw chargers and actually make sure they work then charge a massive premium. 4x faster, make it 5-10x more money
My wife has a 2022 MachE with CarPlay has been seamless. Also, not sure if it occurred in an update after this video was made, but they came out with a software update to allow for better handling of multiple phones setup with wireless CarPlay. You can now set a favorite / default as well as easily switch between the phone being used for CarPlay connection. Plug and charge has also been seamless for me (only public charged around 10 times in the 1.5 years we’ve had it). Charging speed is more on electrify America, but I’ve gotten expected charge levels at my local stations here in NY (they are all relatively new though). Honestly the only thing I don’t like about our MachE is the ride quality. It’s very bumpy (standard suspension) likely because there isn’t much room for suspension travel combined with the heavier weight due to design of the vehicle. Other than that, really have no complaints other than cold weather / winter range loss is a bit higher than other EVs due to lack of heat pump for hvac heating in the car.
As someone who lives in Phoenix (and literally just made this drive today) I have wondered about making this trip in an EV. Good to see that although there infrastructure isn’t perfect, this drive actually doable. Phoenix to So Cal and Phoenix to Vegas are the two important routes any future EV I would get would need to be able to handle. Nice review, this Mach e looks very compelling
re EV battery power and phoenix I have wondered how expensive batteries will fare in in the blistering scortching heat compared with much cooler areas ....heat is a known batteru killer (at least has been historically for lead acid) ...my dad who lived near phoenix replaced sooo many car batteries like one a year....he always bought ones with the best warranties for that reason will be interesting to see how EV batteries hold up in place like Phoenix
first time watching this channel, but this video was super informative! I've been really curious about the charging experience for EVs, and I'm really glad I watched this.
4:43 Ha! Arizona Mills mall charging station. :) Last time I went by there they were ripping out the old chargers and replacing them with the new ones. Looks like this was after they finished.
You are exactly correct about the infrastructure anxiety!!! I am so interested in the Mach-E, but I don't know if I'd ever not be panicked about the ineffective charging system. I used an EV Volvo loaner (after being a Tesla, Model S, P85D owner for 8 years) and could not get one single charger to work. I had to download an app to find the chargers. One was not there at all and the Harley Davidson dealership had no idea about the charger that was right in front of their facility. Across the freeway, there were four chargers. One had a guy sleeping in his car, one had no one in the car, one had a guy with a loaner from the airport in Dallas, Tx. heading to Houston, Texas (5 hour drive), and the 4th one had a cracked screen and was inoperable. I told the guy heading to Houston in an AVIS EV loaner that he should go back to the airport and get another vehicle that did not need charging.
I love that you guys brought up the fact that it is infrastructure anxiety and not range anxiety. I find it hard to explain that to people because they just refuse to understand. I've had an EV for the last two and a half years and I couldn't agree more. Although, I will still never go back to gas.
I'm old enough to have been subscribed to Matt since the year when Avicii was in his prime (which was ten years ago). I always appreciated the one takes, but watching those I couldn't help but miss the production value quality of the older videos with the voice-over narration and other nice touches.
Ive been watching matt since his Garage 419 days. I used to watch his videos before school started as a teenager, then stayed around for The Smoking tire. I'm glad this format is back, it gutted me back in 2013=2014 when he ended it and went to One Takes. Though I did still enjoy One Takes, Its just that they rarely made me feel content in the way this format does.
I recently had a Mach-E as a rental. Wow, I really enjoyed driving it. My hotel had charging for 6 vehicles, 4 of them being NACS and the other 2 were J1772 connectors which I used a few times during the week. I also used my EVgo account to charge up when the hotel chargers were not available. I could see myself buying a Mach-E. It is enough of a "normal" feel that my wife would feel comfortable driving it.
You can program the windows yourself. From the up position roll then down with the button the entire time. When it is fully down continue holding the button for a couple of seconds. Roll it up holding the button the entire time the for a few seconds after it is up. The auto up/down will now properly work. This process is the same for many vehicles.
I have the same exact CarPlay issue on my 4 series coupe. Honestly the best solution to CarPlay is just good old WIRED connection - damn reliable on my F-150.
The old blow on the connector thing makes me wonder, as an EV owner, should you just keep a few cans of contact cleaner and/or duster in the trunk? If it doesn't work, give it a spritz and blast out the plug?
Awesome video. My Mach E purchase was heavily fueled by Matt's ownership experience. And this reaffirms the fact that if you don't need to regularly rely on public charging for your charging needs, that there are lots of great vehicles out there that are not Teslas.
I have never had the window issue or the app issue. As for apple car play. In the beginning I did have issues with it. Now it seems to work all the time. But I always plug my phone in, I don't like how slow the wireless charging is. Also, there is a way to reboot your screen without turning the car off and on again. So if you don't connect, just reboot the computer screen by holding down the volume and the right(skip) arrow for a few seconds.
They really need to put some sort of awning over the chargers. Not only for the sun overpowering the screen, but what about shitty weather? When it takes as long as it did to connect that second time, if it was raining or snowing? Ugh. I appreciate the honesty about the button wear, but did you get the dealer to replace it under warranty? It seems like something most brands would cover.
HugenTesla advantage: far superior charging network, and better software (including Autopilot). I made the same trip you did in Model 3 and had to recharge only, once, which I did during lunch break. Simple and reliable.
2 years 50k in My model 3 it’s never spent more than a few hours at the shop (once). Car still looks brand new, no wear on the inside, and all but one “service” they have come to my house or work.
i think these videos deserve a better thumbnail, something that hints the high quality of the content if you choose to click. Please don't let the early numbers discourage you. You're killing it!
I was at the exact same chargers at Indio in December 2022 and got 155 rate in my polestar. The Rivian next to me was getting 220. There was no message about reduced rate. Both coming and going got 150+.
@@TheSmokingTire I don’t mean to imply there aren’t plenty of EA Charging issues. You aren’t wrong. Quartzsite was a nightmare on our trip from Phoenix to Disney and back.
I'm not a Tesla fan by any means, but the DC charging infrastructure is the reason we bought a Model 3. As our primary car, we need something that can road trip well. My wife isn't a car person and having to fiddle around with a fast charger isn't something she'd enjoy.
I’ve had my Mach e x for less than a year 28k later still love it great car. The electrify America chargers still charge although the charger says reconnecting go inside the car it will show it’s charging or look at the blue glowing lights at the car connection.
Mach-E owner with Android Auto. I’ve been experiencing the same issues as described in this video with Apple Carplay. I haven’t found much literature on this issue but it’s heartening to see that others are experiencing these issues as well, at least. Not only will my phone sometimes not connect, or only connect are a long delay, but every drive, my phone will invariable disconnect and then reconnect after a few moments. It’ll happen at least once every 10 minutes. I don’t know if it’s interference, and issue but bluetooth or wifi (I doubt it’s any of these as I sometimes plug in my phone and it still happens), my phone, or the car. I just want it to stop.
The audio gets out of sync around 14 minutes but is fixed about a minute later. It's fine in the project file so something happened during export or UA-cam processing *shrug*. Sorry!

It happens and boy did that happen in the best spot. Because you are right, range is masking another problem with the EV discussion and that is infrastructure and maintenance. Nice, but the audio sync is messed up.
A cheap tesla3 fixes the TWO problems mentioned in this video.
Autopilot + charging network.
At $32k cpo (and depreciating) its hard to beat for an errand boring daily driver.
I also agree they should never be referred to as “M3” or “Mustang”
I'm liking the fact that you guys are trying different formats to keep content fresh. I like this as well as the Type R vs. GR Corolla video.
Enjoyed this format and shared it . Keep it up Matt. LMK if I can borrow that charger at WCCS sometime. I’m right up the street lol
I love this return to old-school TST form, I hope the investment starts to pay off again soon

This is definitely your strongest format. You might have been too early in the past but this is definitely the new way to go.
Just wait till people who hook up and go shopping for the rest of the day......lol
People used to be so idiotic about charging ports. When they started putting them in Texas, grown men were destroying the ports and laughing about it because they thought EVs were lame.
I’ve been on the fence about getting one, but I’m really leaning toward getting a used Mach E this year.
I’ve been watching TST since the beginning and I love the return of this style of video, it might not be as profitable but the true OG fans love it
Great watch. One thing - I noticed an audio/video de-sync start around 13:30 and get real bad by close to 15mins. Not sure what happened there, but great informative video otherwise!
Hmmm good catch. That is really weird considering this is a shot/audio from an iphone where it should be synced automatically.
I second this
A couple of UA-cam videos I've watched today have done this later in the video, I think it's a UA-cam problem.
Loved it.
Also, he doesn't need the 350 cuz the Mach E maxes out at 150.
And he shouldn't be charging at a limited station with over a hundred miles of range until 86% 😂
man these narrations give such an Anthony Bourdain vibe, loving it
Great video Matt!
It wouldn’t, but I also think 80kW was what the car requested.
The one touch window function is not an EV issue. Have it on my IE mustang with the same issue. Takes 30 seconds to fix.
@@mikev3518 never said it was.
Mach-e looks great, how are people liking it from your perspective?
The supercharger network is where Tesla is still so far ahead. A Mach-E with the Tesla Supercharger reliability would be fantastic.
Just the super charger network? What about the software etc
With the muscles of your thumbnail’s picture, he could crank his own power!
Drives back & forth from northern to southern Calif show that Ford’s charging network is FAR superior to Teslas.. hours loooong lines for the teslas. No wait for Ford’s Electrify America super chargers & level 2 chargers
Good, thoughtful, informative, fair review. Also an owner, wife got a premium in July 2021 and i got a base GT in Jan 2022.
For all their faults, this is something I never worry about in Teslas. I’ve never had issues supercharging Teslas on road-trips.
💯 agree with your comment.
People need to understand the charging curve of their EVs.
Overall a Very good video. 👍👍
@@stuck1n80s exactly on all counts
We love it.

Just bought a 22 AWD on my channel & enjoying it more than I thought!
Awesome to see you were rocking the two bears podcast on your way to see the machine.
You hit the nail on the head, it’s infrastructure anxiety.
Really enjoyed this and it is great to see more about the infrastructure requirements/charging part of the ownership experience
Wondering if it is something due to being an early batch?
@@ryandoyle4344 I don't think so -- CarPlay connectivity bugs were known issues with the Power Up 3.5.x software OTA updates -- Ford seems to have fixed them with the 4.x updates, but I found they require you to unpair / repair your phone to work reliably
@@ev_kimchi The latest UX update has not solved the issue, but thanks!
Would it be faster to drive the speed you won’t and not need to charge as much?
I’m really thinking of of buying this car.
Thank you for cleaning up the early bugs for us 😂.
Glad somebody is saying this. I try not to be a Tesla fanboy, but I just don't have these problems with Tesla. Now build quality on the other hand...
This entire video was one big ad for the company that shall not be named. They couldn't have paid for a better ringing endorsement of the vastly superior Supercharger network and Autopilot.
Combination of podcast talking skills + story telling. This is definitely your strong suit.

Zack is 40?! Wow, good for him. Must be some good genetics and clean living.
He looks 60. What are you talking about? I'm 37 and I look like I'm 29.
Whats crazy to me, is that chargers never have a roof to protect you if its raining. All gas pumps do.
Because its sunshiney day😂
Should have solar panels and lights set-up above...
I wanted the Ford but went with the Tesla for the infrastructure
Voiceover game is on point. The additional information is helpful, I'd welcome more of it in your videos.
Really enjoyed this review, loved the highlighting of how much of a joke Electrify America is.
I'd be curious to see a comparison to the Model Y
This guy is known to hate and bash Tesla. It would be hard to imagine seeing a Model Y comparison video without him being biased.
I kinda dig the format of this video. We're seeing the car while hearing the important details we came for. Very professionally done.
Thanks for this video. My girl has been looking at EV's but I think this video finally talked her out of it (thankfully) 🤞🏻
I put 20k miles on my Mach-E and it was a fun filled 18 months. Traded it for an AUDI Q5 PHEV to simplify our long distance trips.
Elon sucks? You must hate free speech and freedom
I feel like there’s a potential for someone to install legitimate 350kw chargers and actually make sure they work then charge a massive premium.
4x faster, make it 5-10x more money
Lol Bert kresichner is not worth a 4 minute drive...... 4 hours? lmao don't gas light me bro

No wonder everyone loves Tesla. It's much easier and all your issues that you discussed they have mastered for the most part.
Thanks for the Video. I just bought my second one. also a ER with RWD. I and the family love the car.
"Morally correct speed" Love it! I'm going to keep that phrase handy.
On Apple Car Play… just use the wired car play on the Mach E. Saves you the headache and less wear and tear on your iPhone battery.
Brand new to Mach E (2021, Red, Premium, AWD, Extended) and this video was great!
Great long term review and video, Matt. THIS is exactly the kind of review most drivers are going to want to see to even consider an EV.
I really like to new format, I think it brings the feel of your videos upto date and makes them more premium in feel.
Awesome video. My Mach E purchase was heavily fueled by Matt's ownership experience. And this reaffirms the fact that if you don't need to regularly rely on public charging for your charging needs, that there are lots of great vehicles out there that are not Teslas.
"IF"
I have never had the window issue or the app issue.
Love the old format coming back Matt! Hopefully the #s work out!
Both coming and going got 150+.
glad the issue wasn't present the *entire* time.
Loved the video especially because I’m from Phoenix. I absolutely love this video format. Please keep it up, the views will double
i’m glad TST is exploring some archived formats i hope it make it into semi regular appearance
Looking at many videos on the Match E. Been saving for 2 years and ready to buy. Not having range anxiety, having infrastructure anxiety.
I know nothing, but this guy speaks perfect English. And it is a tight, straightforward video.
