Yeah. Most of the time, good horror games rely on underlying horror that gives you a constant sense of dread. And not the “Oh boy I sure wonder when the jump scares gonna come” like with something like FNAF, but the ones that truly make you wonder what the hell is going on, like with the Silent Hill games and indie horror games like Omori and End Roll

FEAR is a really good example on how to do Horror in gaming.
It can be argued that it fits the FPS Genre rather than horror but even then you cannot deny that it had markings of good horror.
I don’t think FEAR is really notable as a horror game as much as it’s notable as a shooter.
Eh, Fear never clicked for me. As far as shooters go, Stalker had the best horror imo.

Before FNaF, most horror games just contain a player who would run around and find stuff while getting chased around by the killer. What made FNaF unique is that: It made the player completely defenceless and their only way of survival to was depended on how well they could save power and some light buttons it made the jumpscares more effective coz it's not SpooPY man attacking you at random; you're responsible for that jumpscares! I think FNaF did horror right (;
Also people should honestly shut the fuck up about the jumpscares. "Oh FNAF is juzt spokscare sim" like dude is that your only complaint. I've seen people call FNAF dogshit because of the jumpscares it has in them and literally nothing else. Have they considered the possibility that idk they were never meant to be scary in the first place. Like why would they play out before you die instead of literally every other moment. I like to think that the FNAF jumpscares aren't supposed to be to keep you on edge, but more of a sign of punishment for you playing the game. They aren't here to tell you "BWAHAHAHA we are SO SCARY! FEAR US!!!!!!!!??!?!" but more of "Uhm yeah you kinda died because you played bad, so let's transition over to a game over screen.". But people out there have the permanent thought in their heads that just because a game has jumpscares is considered bad and because FNAF has so many death jumpscare, they thinks it's bad. I think what scared people back in the day weren't the jumpspooks of bears and bunnies, but rather the ambience, atmosphere and innovative gameplay. But whatever people can have their own opinions, it's not in my business to change that. I just wanted to give people a new outlooks as to how they view the whole FNAF franchise.

Resident evil remakes are solid
In my honest opinion games that aren't horror can be scarier then the actual horror games, because they can utilize the horror pretty well as long as people not realize that. For example DDLC (Doki Doki Literature Club) used horror pretty well, because it fooled the player into thinking it's a visual novel, only to turn into a nightmare full of scary imagery, 4th wall breaking and genuine terror and I think it worked out pretty well in its favor. Unfortunately now that it's known to be a scary game, I think the effect is gone because people are aware of its scariness. My theory is that horror in games can be achieved when the player is being put into a complete sense of disorientation, thinking its a completely different experience, only to be greeted by the horror elements kicking in. You can say it's "fear of the unknown". No? Am I wrong? Maybe, but these are my thoughts on the subject matter. Thank you for listening to my TED-talk.

I agree, when you're playing a game while knowing it's a horror one you expect most things, but when it's hidden like that, it just shows up and absolutely scares you, that's when the true fear kicks in

This is why little nightmares 1 and 2 are the superior horror games. Instead of trying scare you right of the bat it slowly tries to make you uncomfortable with strange scenery. Also great video as always 👍
I think the problem with horror games is that they rely too much on jumpscares, and sometimes they’re scary the first time and after dying over and over again you just get used to the jumpscares.

I would reccomend playing Darkwood. It doesn't rely on Jumpscares, there's multiple ways to play and you can be good or evil if you want. Best part is its 15$

If you want an actually good Steam horror game, just buy the Resident Evil 1 remake when it goes on sale for 5 dollars. It’s perfection, one of the best in the genre.
Darkwood is a great one too from recent years, no (intentional) jump-scares, if a top-down view doesn't bother you.

Cry of fear for example was a good horror game
It had some cheap jumpscares because jumpscares were more popular when the game launched and even so, it uses horror elements flawlessly

I dont play horror games,but in my opinion little nightmares was mostly scary during your encounter with the man with long arms, then I got used to it while the game also tones down the scary elements, more like puzzle adventure type.

In my opinion, Little Nightmares 2 is a whole different story
There are occasional puzzles throughout the game, but whenever the puzzles aren’t there, it really lets the horror shine. The entire hospital section was utterly terrifying, and the Teacher’s mere existence is scary as well.

My favourite horror game has got to be Phasmaphoiba, the tension is super good, one time me and my 2 buddies were the on the high school, the ghost hunted, we got lost and separated, none of us died during the first hunt, then it hunted again, I hide in a classroom, then I hear a very quiet ‘HOLY SHIT’, then I find my other buddy, (Who was on VR). And we run to the exit, right as I walk out the door, the ghost starts hunting, and I turned back and saw my buddy banging on the door, then you just see the ghost walk up behind him, his screams of ‘HELP! OPEN THE DOOR PLEASE’ always make me laugh, Phas can be both scary, and funny, now that, is a good horror game
Quick edit: My buddy in VR also had a soundboard, before he died, he realised his fate, and played sound clips from RDR2 which was drunk Arthur just yelling ‘Lennah’
