When Bruce first sang his part during the recording session, he sang it smoothly in what he thought was his best voice. Quincy Jones, who produced it, was a bit taken aback and said,."No, sing it like Bruce, man!" Bruce then did his rough sound, and Quincy said, "Now that's what we're looking for!"
The one you missed after Willie Nelson is the legendary Al Jarreau. You need to check out "We're In this Love Together", "Moonlighting", and "Mornin". His voice is like silky butter! The one after Bruce was Kenny Loggins, who did "Danger Zone". Your next of his should be "Footloose" or "I'm Alright". After Steve Perry of Journey was Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates. Right before Cyndi Lauper was Huey Lewis (without The News). Congratulations, Jay & Amber, on the first anniversary of your musical awakening!
before Danger Zone/Top Gun Kenny Loggins teamed with Jim Messina and their greatest hits album is the soundtrack of my childhood. any song on that album is reaction worthy. especially important to me is House at Pooh Corner.
Netflix’s “The Greatest Night in Pop” brought me back here again. I remember like yesterday, hearing this song on the radio back in 1985. Still hits hard in 2024.
Literally just got done watching it! I have to say, I didn't expect to discover that Stevie Wonder was basically an agent of chaos through the whole night of recording.
After all these years wondering...I was shook at how it all came together. A night to remember for sure. and a side note I had no idea Dan Akroyd was there.
Such a great documentary. I had no idea they did this all in one night! Sad thought to know so many are no longer with us. And how they did Sheila E was wrong too. But this song was and still is one of my favorites. Gives me chills to listen to it.
That is James Ingram. He and Linda Ronstandt did a song called Somewhere Out There from the movie American Tail. You should do it, it is beautifully done by those two artists
Love that song, both versions. Prefer the in-movie version, though, only because it’s Fievel and his sister, Tanya, sweetly singing it slightly off-key.
I would not suggest that the song I am about to suggest is better than We Are The World, but when Haiti had its earthquake, Canada did a tribute song, Wavin' Flag as done by Young Artists For Canada. It is quite a good song - but I am in no way saying it is as good as We Are The World - but is certianly worth a listen. Check it out.
James Ingram sings before Tina, Al Jarreau after Willie Nelson, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall as the trio, Huey Lewis and Kim Carnes on either side of Cindi Lauper. James Ingram did a duet with your girl Linda Ronstadt for an animated movie “An American Tail”. “Just Once” is one of his songs you should check out.
J doesn’t like slow jams, but they should listen to Secret Garden by Q. Barry Whits , El Debarge. Ingram and Al B Sure. There is a live version somewhere on UA-cam.
Harry Belafonte is briefly seen. Check out his song Day-O ( the banana song). Who Jay called Billie Ocean is Jeffrey Osborne. Check him singing Oh Holy Night if you can find it or any of his hits, maybe Baby Stay With me Tonight. And Dionne Warwick(Jay was close)
When this song came out, I was working at a radio station in Seattle. There was a thing where every radio station in the country was supposed to play it at a specific time. When the time came, we plugged it in. IO went to a radio and acanned all 44 radio stations in Seattle. Every one of them was playing We Are The World. Rock, pop country news/talk, sports/talk, Christian, every one of them. I still get shivers when I remember it.
Which radio station? I was owning and operating an independent record store in Seattle in 1985 (and for ten years before that and for 10 years after that) and, of course, "We Are the World" was our best selling 45 of that year and probably of every other year as well.
Same here. I was at Q107 in Charleston, SC and we took part in that. We checked the other stations in town also and they were all playing it. It made me tear up a little bit but I was only 17 so everything made me emotional. LOL
James Ingram is the guy you keep asking about. Listen to Just Once or I Don’t Have the Heart. He also did a great job with Linda Ronstadt on Somewhere Out There. He has a solo for a reason!
Ahhhh, THAT’S why I know his voice! I was at the perfect age to have seen An American Tail several times and be obsessed with “Somewhere Out There. “ 😊
The guy with the soulful voice (10:44) is James ingram, very very humble and underrated artist. He wrote arguably the best song on Michael's Thriller album, Pretty young thing and a has few solid hits of his own, he was a force in the 80s, he also did the soundtrack for the American tail animation cartoon in 80s, check out the song, somewhere out there. - he just passed away few years back but he was an amazing artist
Here is a list of the artists that sang in the correct order as well as everyone who sang in the chorus. Hope this helps: Lionel Ritchie Stevie Wonder Paul Simon Kenny Rogers James Ingram Tina Turner Billy Joel Michael Jackson Diana Ross Dionne Warwick Willie Nelson Al Jarreau Bruce Springsteen Kenny Loggins Steve Perry Daryl Hall Michael Jackson Huey Lewis Cyndi Lauper Kim Carnes Chorus with all artists Bob Dylan Chorus with all artists Ray Charles Stevie Wonder Bruce Springsteen Chorus with all artists James Ingram Ray Charles Chorus with all artists Ray Charles Names of all in the chorus Chorus (alphabetically) Dan Aykroyd Harry Belafonte Lindsey Buckingham Kim Carnes Ray Charles Mario Cipollina (of Huey Lewis and the News) Johnny Colla (of Huey Lewis and the News) Bob Dylan Sheila E. Bob Geldof Bill Gibson (of Huey Lewis and the News) Daryl Hall Chris Hayes (of Huey Lewis and the News) Sean Hopper (of Huey Lewis and the News) Jackie Jackson La Toya Jackson Marlon Jackson Michael Jackson Randy Jackson Tito Jackson Al Jarreau Waylon Jenning Billy Joel James Ingram Cyndi Lauper Huey Lewis Kenny Loggins Bette Midler Willie Nelson John Oates Jeffrey Osborne Steve Perry Anita Pointer (of The Pointer Sisters) June Pointer (of The Pointer Sisters) Ruth Pointer (of The Pointer Sisters) Lionel Ritchie Smokey Robinson Kenny Rogers Diana Ross Paul Simon Bruce Springsteen Tina Turner Dionne Warwick Stevie Wonder Producer Quincy Jones
The guy you said was Billy Ocean, he is Jeffrey Osborne, one of the great artists that actually had success with a group and great solo success. He was the former lead singer of the legendary R&B/ Soul group LTD, with many funk hits and love ballads from the 70’s, and he went solo in the 80’s and had great r&B and pop success, and he is still performing and touring today.
On The Wings of Love - Jeffrey Osborne. Another amazing singer part of this group. This is a gorgeous love song from the 80s and Jeff Osborne has a rich baritone voice that really is displayed in this song. Love to see you react to him also.
My personal favourite song of his is “You Should Be Mine”. Still have my dad’s original mixtape collection from my infant years in El Salvador & that song has always resonated with me since then.
Here is the complete list of all the artists! Lionel Richie 0:25 * Stevie Wonder 0:32 * Paul Simon 0:42 * Kenny Rogers 0:54 * James Ingram 0:59 * Tina Turner 1:05 * Billy Joel 1:12 * Michael Jackson 1:18 * Diana Ross 1:32 * Dionne Warwick 1:48 * Willie Nelson 2:02 * Al Jarreau 2:08 * Bruce Springsteen 2:14 * Kenny Loggins 2:21 * Steve Perry 2:27 * Daryl Hall 2:35 * Michael Jackson 2:41 * Huey Lewis 2:48 * Cyndi Lauper 2:53 * Kim Carnes 3:01 * Bob Dylan 3:48 * Ray Charles 4:41 * Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen 4:53 * Bruce Springsteen 5:31 * James Ingram 6:13 * Ray Charles 6:27
Hey Jay! Hey Amber! You guys did a great job! You've already had some good help with naming some of the other artists, but I'll try to add some further help, if I can: At 2:38 & 10:15, that's James Ingram. Some of his hits are: JUST ONCE, ONE HUNDRED WAYS, and I DON'T HAVE THE HEART, along with a duet with Patti Austin: BABY COME TO ME, and a duet with Michael McDonald: YA MO BE THERE. @ 4:12 Al Jarreau, @ 4:26 Kenny Loggins, @ 5:10 "Journey" was Steve Perry, @ 5:18 Darryl Hall (Hall & Oates), @ 5:28 Huey Lewis (Huey Lewis & The News), @ 5:40 Kim Carnes, @ 6:15 John Oates (Hall & Oates), @ 9:53 "Billy Ocean" is really Jeffrey Osborne. Other artists seen: Dan Aykroyd (The Blues Brothers), Harry Belafonte, Marlon Jackson, LaToya Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Sheila E, Bette Midler, The Pointer Sisters, Lindsey Buckingham, and more.... The conductor was Quincy Jones!
He managed to make a room full of egomaniacs sound like a church choir. 😝 In addition, each artist was allowed to make their own trademark stamp on it.
I think Michael Omartian was the vocal producer. And I don't know if he got a nomination for it.....but he needed to! Cuz these pairings are so unexpected and worked so well. We would have never known how much we needed a call and response from Bruce Springstein and Stevie Wonder!!
This was literally the biggest music event of the '80s. You'll never see the collection of talent that assemble back in 1985. It was like the Avengers of Music Assembling.
Actually the biggest event of the 80s was Live Aid as the live summit of all the songs, artists and bands from all over the world contributing. Certainly the biggest live music event ever.
I cry every time I hear this and now it's also for the ones that are in this amazing group that are no longer with us in earth. Thank God we'll always have their music!
One of the guys in the background crowd was Harry Belafonte. Definitely recommend checking out some of his songs, they're fun! Some options include "Shake Senora" and "Day-O".
“Jump in the line” not Shake Senora. Not tryna be a jerk, just hoping to make it easier for them to look it up with the correct title. Love both of those selections.
So, I’m old enough to remember when this happened. I think it’s really important for you, and everyone else of your generation to research what was happening in Ethiopia, Africa in 1985 to create this. It wasn’t just about music, it was a massive effort to raise money to save people from starvation. Children were so malnutritioned and so dehydrated we saw their skeletal bone structure. It was horrific.
Yes Jordan, that was Steve Perry from Journey, and right after him was Daryl Hall from Hall and Oates. After Cindy was Kim Carnes who sings “Bettie Davis Eyes” which you’ve reacted to.
People could react to this song a thousand times and I'd watch it and love it every time. James Ingram was absolutely amazing. I feel like he should have been way more popular than he was because his voice was definitely something special.
This was recorded after an awards show. Instead of going to an after-party, they all headed directly to the studio to record this. It turned out to be this inspiring song.
Yep, and MJ skipped it all together to lay down the guide track for the chorus so they could get through that part quicker. And the awards show was the 1985 American Music Awards, (where Prince cleaned house from the Purple Rain album, man I miss the 80's)
I was a young teenager when this was created.....and it STILL makes tears roll and my heart sing with love for mankind. This one song proves that when we come together with love, we can create magic.
*I was surprised to see Hall & Oates being one of the ones you missed. He was right after Steve Perry from Journey. Great reaction and happy Anniversary!*
This was my childhood. I was 10 at the time, and I already knew so much about many of these artists. Not long after this song was released, my family took place in “Hands across America” where we drove to an pre-determined section of the interstate outside of our St. Louis home to join hands as part of a human chain across the country.
Same, I was also 10/11 at the time....and only about 2.5 hours north! Glad we took part in this era/event together! 80's/90's were the greatest times of my life! ✌
@@tommykirkland3140 The world was smaller then. As a kid, the music and all the events surrounding it was just so big. When you turned on the radio, it wasn’t just background. The music was almost family, and the songs became part of the fabric of who you were. I’ve spent decades building a productive and meaningful life, but man, what I wouldn’t give to just go back for a few days and just hang out in my room with my radio and MTV.
My favourite parts are Springsteen and Wonder duetting together and James Ingram’s last chorus. The part were he says “so let’s start giving” always gives me chills.😊
🌎 J & Amber: Of all your reactions, this is my favorite and here’s why: I’ve watched your journey on this channel and seen SO much growth in your appreciation for music. You’ve brought an abundance of joy to so many of the RSR family along the way. When you first reacted to We Are The World, you did fine. But “just listening” to a song versus deeply understanding & appreciating the nuances of the artists behind it are two different things. The contrast between the two reactions for the exact same song are palpable just in your body language alone. It’s a wonderful thing seeing you enrich your lives, your kids’ lives and our lives with your musical journey. Wishing you continued success and happiness! 💞
I couldn't agree more with you. As I was watching this video I thought exactly the same. J has become an expert in 80s artists and was able to name most of them. Btw, Amber's reaction on Bruce part is priceless (in both videos).
I never get tired of watching this. I was 10 when it first aired on MTV. I remember my school collecting money for Africa. It was a huge deal at the time. Thank you for re watching this masterpiece. Also, there is a newer version but it was for Haiti after that massive earthquake. Its pretty good too
our canadian school also collected money specifically for the starving children in Africa. They disappeared but this amazing infrastructure somehow got implemented lol XD
All the comments are right. Also, MRS siblings are there, Jeffrey Osborne who started with LTD, (check out Love Ballard). MOSTLY though, James Ingram is who you stopped the video for, (One Hundred Ways), and AL Jarreau. (Any song previously mentioned, lol). Last but not least, the composer of this song was the producer of 1000s of acts, Quincy Jones. CONGRATULATIONS on your one year anniversary! ❤
When everyone sings with their heart, it’s beautiful! When Bruce Springsteen sings he does it with his heart and his guts: and it becomes big! Respect for the Boss!
Makes me cry, their was Kenny Logins and Hall and Oats in the group, sooo emotional right now!! Almost recognized everyone, A blast to the past WOW!! Thank you guys!! 😊💓🤘✌️
I loved the documentary about this song! Michael skipped the awards show to start recording before the other singers; they all came directly from the show late at night; they recorded the chorus first and the individual voices later; they all sang Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) from Harry Belafonte just for fun; they had to stop recording when Cindy Lauper sang because her necklaces where making too much noise; they all asked for each-others autographs, etc. All in all an awesome night!
BILLY JOEL!!! More than just Piano Man. You need a deep dive into one of the greatest songwriter/singers EVER!! You’ve reacted to some of his “subpar” stuff. Try- “She’s Always A Woman To Me”, “New York State of Mind”, “Innocent Man”, “The Stranger”……the list goes on and on.
Don't forget Just The Way You Are, Honesty, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, For The Longest Time , Goodnight Saigon. And this is still a short list considering all the great songs he had.
I remember when he was the first American artist to tour the former USSR after the Berlin Wall fell... He drew the second biggest crowd behind Metallica's epic performance there.
There are several videos on UA-cam that show "the making of ‘We Are The World’" & what’s interesting is the amount of time it took to record this. It had to be done in one night, after the Grammy Awards so they could grab so many artist’s that they wanted to participate. It’s been told that every person was told to leave their egos at the door ✌️☮️ Happy Anniversary! You two are my favorite’s, so hopeful there are many more years of your channel ❤️
There is also a clip from after, the singers sang a Harry Belafonte song to honour him. Some of the artists came back the next day, to do parts to fill out the spaces, they wore different clothes, so you can get a good idea of whom they were. The conductor was Quincey Jones, and Bob Geldorf from Boomtown Rats, "I don't Like Mondays," who set up "aid for africa," was in the room.
@@donnagutierrez5740 You’re right, it was the AMA’s, not Grammy’s. Thanks for the correction, I should’ve caught that lol, it makes so much more sense ✌️☮️
If you watch Bruce during his later solo parts closely, you see him tearing up and blinking then closing his eyes to hold them back. I think this just shows how emotional both the song is and some singers can get.
If you watch the BTS, it’s here on UA-cam and hosted by Jane Fonda, Bob Geldof (he was the one behind Band Aid the Do They Know It’s Christmas) told a 1st hand account of the famine in Ethiopia before they started recording. Also Stevie Wonder brought in an Ethiopian woman who had gone through it.
My dears, now in 2024, when I write to you, I am approaching 68 years old. When USA for AFRICA appeared, I was 29 years old, I was young. We had very good music
I've got a lot of respect for you both for learning and going back and applying your knowledge to videos. Smart. You may want to begin exploring Kenny Loggins. Tall, bearded gentleman. "Danger Zone", "Footloose", "I'm Alright", "Meet Me Halfway".
OMG YES! I’ve been dying for this re-reaction since you know the artist so much better now! Whole different perspective right?! Amber’s pop quiz nerves 😂 love it, and Happy Anniversary Rob Squad ❤️
I have been asking you guys to react to "Stars" by Hear ' N ' Aid for months now Same concept as this song , but all Rock/Metal guys. You have done enough Rock reactions that you should recognize more than a few names. Guys from Motley Crue , Quiet Riot , Journey , Queensryche , and Blue Oyster Cult to name just a few of the participants in the song. The project was written and put together by the late great Ronnie James Dio ( may he Rock in Peace )
James Ingram was an amazing soulful singer. He had a MASSIVE hit during my childhood with his duet with Linda Ronstadt for the animated movie An American Tail. The song was Somewhere Out There.
Here's the breakdown of all the participants: Conductor - Quincy Jones Soloists (in order of appearance) Lionel Richie - 0:26 Stevie Wonder - 0:39 Paul Simon - 0:43 Kenny Rogers - 0:53 James Ingram - 0:59 Tina Turner - 1:06 Billy Joel - 1:13 Michael Jackson - 1:19 Diana Ross - 1:32 Dionne Warwick - 1:48 Willie Nelson - 2:02 Al Jarreau - 2:09 Bruce Springsteen - 2:15 Kenny Loggins - 2:21 Steve Perry - 2:28 Daryl Hall - 2:36 Huey Lewis - 2:48 Cyndi Lauper - 2:54 Kim Carnes - 3:02 Bob Dylan - 3:48 Ray Charles - 4:27 Chorus (alphabetically) Dan Aykroyd Harry Belafonte Lindsey Buckingham Mario Cipollina Johnny Colla Sheila E. Bob Geldof Bill Gibson Chris Hayes Sean Hopper Jackie Jackson La Toya Jackson Marlon Jackson Randy Jackson Tito Jackson Waylon Jennings Bette Midler John Oates Jeffrey Osborne The Pointer Sisters Smokey Robinson Instrumentalists David Paich - synthesizers Michael Boddicker - synthesizers, programming Paulinho da Costa - percussion Phil Collins - percussion Louis Johnson - synth bass Michael Omartian - keyboards Greg Phillinganes - keyboards John Robinson - drums
Hands down the greatest collaboration of iconic singers in the history of music videos...There isn't even a 2nd place...None of them were paid, but they happily came together to lend their immense talents to a great cause.
Not only did they come unpaid, but even more had to be turned away because there wasn't room for all of them. I can imagine even the B team would have knocked it out of the park.
Footloose - Kenny Loggins (He’s the one who Amber first paused on with the beard who you didn’t know.). It’s his most popular song, and just an energetic 80s fun banger! Love to see you react that one!
Funny story about Cyndi Lauper in rehearsals they kept hearing noise when she sang. Turned out it was all her necklaces clinking together. If u notice in the video she took them off. 😆 I saw her in concert when she first came out in the 80's.
There will never be another moment like this in music. The talent that came together on one song. It still wows me -- and makes me emotional. And hearing it, I'm 25 again.
Congrats on 1 year!! Soooo much talent in a room. Stevie Wonder, James Ingram and Ray Charles absolutely smashed that last part. Ugh so good! All of it. Phenomenal. My favorites here are Huey Lewis and Kenny Loggins (this didn’t really showcase his voice here) but please check out Huey Lewis sooo many bangers. Start with I Wanna New Drug then Heart of Rock and Roll!! Amber might be a fan of their instrumentals!! 😉😉👌🏼
They've done Heart of Rock and Roll and Power of Love. I'm surprised they didn't recognize him. To me he has a very distinct voice. He's one of my favorites on here too
Huey Lewis and "the News" was actually Elvis Costello's back up band for Costello's album, "My Aim is True." Though Lewis did not appear on the album either as a singer or playing his trademark harmonica, he once said that "All the harmonica that isn’t on the Elvis Costello record was played by me."
Remember when Paul Simon said, "If a bomb dropped on this place, Bob Denver is back on top"? That was real because all the top artists in the US were there.
Can you imagine walking into that room and finding yourself surrounded by this amazing talent? I hope they were all humble enough to recognize how amazing that must have been and, at the same time, feel honored to be included. Never has such an ensemble of talent been in one room and it probably won't ever happend again.
I recall reading an article that said that Quincy Jones posted a sign at the entrance saying “ Check your ego at the door”. Of course Quincy was and is still respected in the world of music even in 2022.
Younger people never recognize Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates, the most successful popular duo of all time. His voice was my favorite from not just the era, but perhaps the last 60 years.
To be Fair - Daryl Hall doesn't look like that Anymore - I came to him "backwards" via Live from Daryl's House and it took me a second to recognize him.
I was 15 when this song came out. It was HUGE! This song and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid were were written to raise awareness and money for the starvation of the people in Africa. There was also Hands Across America which was a day that was planned when the American people all formed a human chain by holding hands from coast to coast. If i remember correctly, that was also to raise awareness for Africa.I was a part of that chain along with my family and some friends. It was amazing how we all came together then. Such sweet memories.
So many amazing singers with their own approach to their lines makes this song legendary! Especially the combo of Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder is amazing - it always brings tears to my eyes.
Back years and years ago every radio station played this song at the same time.. I remember sitting in my car in the parking lot of my job just to hear this song crying. And was late for work. Such a powerful song!! Thank you!!
You did a reaction to James Ingram’s song two months ago titled “One hundred ways”. You said he was too smooth and he definitely was that. Under appreciated given his talent. He had great hits with Patti Austin (another vocal legend) “Baby Come to Me” and “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”. One comment below said that you also reacted to his duet with a Linda Rondtad “Somewhere Out There”. He had that old school R&B (can really sang for real) soulful voice that I grew up on and loved.
Being born in '69 (arguably the best year ever for music) and being a teenager throughout the 80s, I just feel so lucky for all that I got to experience musically. And don't miss Dan Akroyd singing in there! The original Ghost Buster!
@@gaylecole9777 1984 was the greatest year in music just go look at the billboard charts and you can pretty much sing the first 200 songs by memory! In terms of album sales it also still holds the record!
I was born in 2001 but my mom (born '77) would play a lot of 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's music growing up. I am so thankful for that, for knowing these absolute legends. It really began my love for music.
This song just gets better and better with every passing decade. These artists are all legends, and the message is timeless. Hopefully one day we will have ☮️ on 🌍
Don't leave out the great Quincy Jones conducting the crew. I think he has the most Grammy's of anyone, and he had the clout and influence to bring this crew together and direct through something special. I love that they had a sign "check your egos at the door" to make all this work. What's even more amazing is the ones who did not get solos like Lindsey Buckingham and a few others. The stars aligned on this one.
The guy you asked about is James Ingram. You've heard him sing with Linda Ronstadt on "Somewhere Out There" if the kids have watched "American Tail" The bearded guy you didn't know was Kenny Loggins, and the blonde lady was Kim Carnes. Yu also saw many members of the Jackson family as well as Bette Midler, Harry Belafonte and The Pointer Sisters. I'm sure I missed a few....but...there you go.
The first one you missed was James Ingram!!! I have to suggest some of his songs. "I Don't Have The Heart" and "Just Once." He's no longer with us on Earth, but his amazing voice still resonates!!! Wow, neither one of you recognized Huey Lewis!!! Before that, you missed Kenny Loggins. Jay almost got Kim Carnes. You both missed Darryl Hall at 5:14.
Agreed. YOu also should do James' duet with Patti LaBelle, "Baby Come to Me" as well as his duet with Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers, "Yah Mo B There".
Suggestion: do this again on your second YT anniversary, but do it live. It’ll help you fill in gaps with the “lesser” known/unknown and not-solo’d artists, like Dan Aykroyd isn’t a considered a professional singer, but a widely-recognized comedic actor (Ghostbusters as an example) who sang in the chorus.
Dan Aykroyd was in The Blue Brothers and you reacted to Soul Man. John Belushi did most the lead vocals, though. Check out Sweet Home Chicago, Who's Makin' Love, Hey Bartender, or Rubber Biscuit. When the movie channel gets up and running, you need to react to that movie!!!
It's still so POWERFUL, 30+ years after it came out! I was when it came out - and it's nostalgic now ALONG with the message it sends. I'm glad you came back to it. Oh and "Do They Know It's Christmas" - the original song like this - still hits me right in the feels when they start playing that for the holidays. *Usually in July, since that's when Christmas seems to start these days!* :P
We must remember the cause was for starving people of Ethiopia & East Africa this is why these wonderful artists gathered. They did an amazing thing for humanity, more than we see today. I remember when I first heard this, my heart was in despair for the starving but my heart also was filled with joy for what the singers accomplished 💔❤️🩹☮️🇨🇦. We are the World - we have to do better, we are one 🫶🏽
The singer you didn't know was someone you have reacted to: James Ingram (100 ways). Right before Cindy Lauper was Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis, and Kim Carnes. You might want to react to Kenny Loggins" "This Is It". Also there was a very smooth crooner: Al Jerreau.
This song ALWAYS make me cry - the emotion & rawness is still there - the love that flows from all the artists is wonderful!! Thanks for re-doing this one!!!
The year has passed by in a rush! I envy your trip through recorded music. It took me most of 60 years to listen to the music y'all have experienced in the last year! But I have good news. You still have a huge amount of wonderful music and great bands that you haven't listened to! Please keep up the great work and broaden your horizons even more. There is so much more out there! Don't stop now. Congratulations on your anniversary! I wish you could know how much you and your little family mean to all of us, your larger family. We love you all SO much! Peace.
Hope this helps you guys…. 😊 thanks for the video! 2:35 James Ingram 3:50 Dionne Warwick 4:12 Al Jarreau 5:01 Kenny Loggins 5:07 Steve Perry 5:14 Daryl Hall 5:26 Huey Lewis 5:40 Kim Carnes 7:00 Dan Aykroyd / Harry Belafonte 10:01 James Ingram
I'm so glad you revisited this song. Now you can see how huge this was back in the day. So many of them are gone now. You really need to check out Al Jarreau! He sang Moonlighting and a few others. Hughey Lewis is another one you should check out. I think that was James Ingram. He sang "Somewhere out there" with Linda Ronstadt.
This song touches so deeply. I'm a big fan of so many of those artists, but every time I hear Ray's voice, the already big lump in my throat triples in size. He appears a few seconds later and I totally burst into tears. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I'm not even mad about it. It's good to feel so deeply. ❤️
Lionel Richie - 0:26 Stevie Wonder - 0:39 Paul Simon - 0:43 Kenny Rogers - 0:53 James Ingram - 0:59 Tina Turner - 1:06 Billy Joel - 1:13 Michael Jackson - 1:19 Diana Ross - 1:32 Dionne Warwick - 1:48 Willie Nelson - 2:02 Al Jarreau - 2:09 Bruce Springsteen - 2:15 Kenny Loggins - 2:21 Steve Perry - 2:28 Daryl Hall - 2:36 Huey Lewis - 2:48 Cyndi Lauper - 2:54 Kim Carnes - 3:02 Bob Dylan - 3:48 Ray Charles - 4:27
If you ever get a chance, you should react to Phil Collins' with the band Genesis and their video to the song Land of Confusion. Its a great song, also very powerful meaning, but the best part is that its a tribute to all things 80s using puppets, even a reenactment to this music video.
@@btgiv6009 It was 80s music not political philosophy. It didn't have the breathing room to be challenging the political status quo as in the 60s and 70s. Genesis were very risque in creating Land of Confusion as big record labels were steering away from politically sensitive material at a time when powerful political zealots in many Western nations were not above threatening to have radio stations boycott that type of material so artists often alluded to the issues rather than smack the public in the face with it.
Brilliant choice. Phil Collins played his last ever live performance at The O2 Arena London (brilliant venue) a few nights ago with his band Genesis, was delayed concert due to covid. Congratulations on your channel's one year anniversary!! You are absolutely adorable. Our kids are about your age (perhaps a wee bit older) and it's been wonderful to follow your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 😎. You've really got to give Quincy Jones A LOT of credit. Not just for keeping all those egos "checked at the door", but also for figuring out how to place these varied voices and styles together to get the best out of each of them. I mean, Bruce and Stevie? Whoodah thunk it? Q! That's who🤣 Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
Interesting little piece of trivia, this was recorded immediately following that year's American Music Awards ceremony and most of the musicians went from the ceremony right to the recording studio. All told 45 artists were involved with the recording with another 50 having been turned away at the studio door.
Prince had a personal invitation from Quincy Jones, but Prince declined; but then later on in life he stated that he regretted missing out on such a wonderful fundraising singing experience.
Knowing these artists, and what they represent before listening to this song makes it that much more meaningful, as you now know. Amber's reaction to Ray Charles was touching and priceless. 🥰
Wow love how well rounded ur music taste. All of the legends up on ur wall. Just awesome..I love the we are the world song. Love all of the participants in this song but my favorite of all time was is and will always be MJ!!! It still just doesn't seem right how he passed so quickly. I remember the day it happened. I was working as a RN and in between seeing my patients I saw it on the news. Omg I cried off n on all shift. I know I sound nuts but I have always love the Jackson 5 and MJ as an independent artist but I also loved how much care he had for those less fortunate financially and the earth...and feeding the poor ect. How much he loved people and especially the care he had for feeding children abroad ect. There will never be another MJ..
Happy, happy anniversary!!! I don't think you guys know just how much joy you bring to us. Y'all are my personal stress reliever on tough days and you bring happiness every single time I watch y'all. Its amazing to watch y'all learning about all of this wonderful music and talent. Keep up the good "work". Again, happy anniversary!
"Hear 'n Aid" is the 80's heavy metal supergroup that also put out a song for famine relief in Africa. The song and video are fire. It's called, "Stars." It has everybody you've been learning about in the video
I was just about to recommend that myself. The way their different parts of that long guitar solo will definitley give them a smile on their faces. Jay and Amber wants to give the people what we want. And we want to make them smile by recommend "Hear 'n Aid". 😊

Sometimes i hear him sing and the raspy voice isn't there which i find disappointing nevertheless he sounds great.
I agree his raspy voice is his trademark and it's what makes him good, ironically he doesn't have it in one of his best songs, Glory Days. @@AH-sl2je
Well the documentary said other history
it's so dramatic haha
The one you missed after Willie Nelson is the legendary Al Jarreau. You need to check out "We're In this Love Together", "Moonlighting", and "Mornin". His voice is like silky butter! The one after Bruce was Kenny Loggins, who did "Danger Zone". Your next of his should be "Footloose" or "I'm Alright". After Steve Perry of Journey was Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates. Right before Cyndi Lauper was Huey Lewis (without The News). Congratulations, Jay & Amber, on the first anniversary of your musical awakening!
Yes! Thank you! I was like, is that Al Jarreau? I turn 44 years old in a week and I’m already forgetting the artists of the 80s 🤦🏼♀️
Al Jarreau's version of Take Five is spectacular, too...
They also missed James Ingram (he was the guy you asked about at the end, Amber) and Kim Carnes (right after Cyndi Lauper).
“After All” by Al Jareau and “Meet Me Half Way” by Kenny Logins are definite musts!
before Danger Zone/Top Gun Kenny Loggins teamed with Jim Messina and their greatest hits album is the soundtrack of my childhood. any song on that album is reaction worthy. especially important to me is House at Pooh Corner.
Netflix’s “The Greatest Night in Pop” brought me back here again. I remember like yesterday, hearing this song on the radio back in 1985. Still hits hard in 2024.
OMG - That would be a great show for you guys to react to!! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT!!!
@@StardustKevinwatching Netflix now 🎉🎉🎉
Literally just got done watching it!
Kinda painful to see kenny rogers and James Ingram next to each other knowing they are just one year apart passing away.
Love that song, both versions. Prefer the in-movie version, though, only because it’s Fievel and his sister, Tanya, sweetly singing it slightly off-key.
James Ingram. Just once. One of best all time songs.
Am I the only one who sees a passing resemblance between Jay and James Ingraham?
I would very much suggest "I don't have the heart" from the "it's real" album, not the new version
U will never see so much talent in one studio like this again, ever!!!!! This song/video is something special
I'll be surprised if there's ever this much talent in the entire industry all at one time again.
@@gregorymoore2877 agree 1000%
I would not suggest that the song I am about to suggest is better than We Are The World, but when Haiti had its earthquake, Canada did a tribute song, Wavin' Flag as done by Young Artists For Canada. It is quite a good song - but I am in no way saying it is as good as We Are The World - but is certianly worth a listen. Check it out.
@@davidkeech9738 will do, thanks so much for the suggestion
@@tiacalhoun3841 Let me know what you think of it once done. It is quite a good tune, when all is said and done.
James Ingram was a protege of Quincy Jones's, so it's no surprise Q had him on the song.
J doesn’t like slow jams, but they should listen to Secret Garden by Q. Barry Whits , El Debarge. Ingram and Al B Sure. There is a live version somewhere on UA-cam.
And Yah Mo B There with Michael McDonald!
James Ingram was an amazing singer. His two biggest hits as I recall were his duet with Patti Austin "Baby Come to me" and "I don't have the heart" .
Wow amazing
I remember that in the Bay Area of California too!!
Same here. I was at Q107 in Charleston, SC and we took part in that. We checked the other stations in town also and they were all playing it. It made me tear up a little bit but I was only 17 so everything made me emotional. LOL
I remember that! So cool to hear it on every single station.
James Ingram is the guy you keep asking about. Listen to Just Once or I Don’t Have the Heart. He also did a great job with Linda Ronstadt on Somewhere Out There. He has a solo for a reason!
Oh I love these songs! Yessss
James Ingram also did a great duet with Michael McDonald: Yah Mo Be There.
Absolutely. Been ages since I've heard his songs.
I don’t have the heart is awesome
Ahhhh, THAT’S why I know his voice! I was at the perfect age to have seen An American Tail several times and be obsessed with “Somewhere Out There. “ 😊
The guy with the soulful voice (10:44) is James ingram, very very humble and underrated artist. He wrote arguably the best song on Michael's Thriller album, Pretty young thing and a has few solid hits of his own, he was a force in the 80s, he also did the soundtrack for the American tail animation cartoon in 80s, check out the song, somewhere out there. - he just passed away few years back but he was an amazing artist
I love that song on the American tail album and I didn't know he wrote pyt

Jay & Amber, that wasn't Billy Ocean, it was Jeffery Osborne.
@@LibraKing3121 yes, you are correct.
As I recall, they recorded this after the Grammys. Basically, staying up all night to record it. It still moves me after all these years.
American Music Awards.
They were all told to leave their egos at the door. And they did.
after the AMAs - and theres a documentary on UA-cam on how they did the song - its really good and fun to watch them together acting silly and whatnot

I caught a couple of these artists! Good job!
The BRILLIANCE of Quincy Jones and how he put the specific voices together that he did is genius.
Yes I agree 👍💯
The pairing of Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder is just genius. Their voices play together so well even though they are so different.
Quincy, MJ and Lionel Richie! Amazing production!
Among all these legends, the one that gives. me chills is Cyndi Lauper
This was literally the biggest music event of the '80s. You'll never see the collection of talent that assemble back in 1985. It was like the Avengers of Music Assembling.

One of the guys in the background crowd was Harry Belafonte. Definitely recommend checking out some of his songs, they're fun! Some options include "Shake Senora" and "Day-O".

Except when Jimi Hendrix walked on stage by himself
There absolutely has, we are stars, when rock stars did this exact same thing
You’re a Vet, Patty 👏👏 I’ve been a MASSIVE Hall & Oates fan for years and never realized that was Daryl

New York State of mind, Italian restaurant, for the longest time, still rock and roll to me, moving out.
There are several videos on UA-cam that show "the making of ‘We Are The World’" & what’s interesting is the amount of time it took to record this.

OMG YES! I’ve been dying for this re-reaction since you know the artist so much better now! Whole different perspective right?! Amber’s pop quiz nerves 😂 love it, and Happy Anniversary Rob Squad ❤️
I have been asking you guys to react to "Stars" by Hear ' N ' Aid for months now
Same concept as this song , but all Rock/Metal guys.
Here's the breakdown of all the participants:
Conductor - Quincy Jones
Soloists (in order of appearance)
Lionel Richie - 0:26 Stevie Wonder - 0:39 Paul Simon - 0:43 Kenny Rogers - 0:53 James Ingram - 0:59 Tina Turner - 1:06 Billy Joel - 1:13 Michael Jackson - 1:19 Diana Ross - 1:32 Dionne Warwick - 1:48 Willie Nelson - 2:02 Al Jarreau - 2:09 Bruce Springsteen - 2:15 Kenny Loggins - 2:21 Steve Perry - 2:28 Daryl Hall - 2:36 Huey Lewis - 2:48 Cyndi Lauper - 2:54 Kim Carnes - 3:02 Bob Dylan - 3:48 Ray Charles - 4:27

Dan Aykroyd Harry Belafonte Lindsey Buckingham Mario Cipollina Johnny Colla Sheila E. Bob Geldof Bill Gibson Chris Hayes Sean Hopper Jackie Jackson La Toya Jackson Marlon Jackson Randy Jackson Tito Jackson Waylon Jennings Bette Midler John Oates Jeffrey Osborne The Pointer Sisters Smokey Robinson
Instrumentalists
David Paich - synthesizers Michael Boddicker - synthesizers, programming Paulinho da Costa - percussion Phil Collins - percussion Louis Johnson - synth bass Michael Omartian - keyboards Greg Phillinganes - keyboards John Robinson - drums
Great job!
Missed James Ingram, All Jarreau, Kenny Logins, Daryl Hall and Kim Carnes
I didn’t know about the instrumentalists, particularly Phil Collins.
Sadly some are no longer with us. May they RIP.
Footloose - Kenny Loggins (He’s the one who Amber first paused on with the beard who you didn’t know.). It’s his most popular song, and just an energetic 80s fun banger! Love to see you react that one!
Love his "Danny's Song"
Funny story about Cyndi Lauper in rehearsals they kept hearing noise when she sang. Turned out it was all her necklaces clinking together. If u notice in the video she took them off. 😆 I saw her in concert when she first came out in the 80's.
There will never be another moment like this in music. The talent that came together on one song. It still wows me -- and makes me emotional. And hearing it, I'm 25 again.
For real. I'm a blubbering mess all over again
He's one of my favorites on here too
Huey all the way. I wish they would react to "Walking a Thin Line", "It's Alright" and "Giving it all up for love"
Huge Huey Lewis and the news fan. Homegrown boy, he did lot of great music.
I died at ," Paul Simon's so little. "😂 Happy Anniversary, you guys are the best!! I got my ' Make someone smile' tee in the mail!!😁
It's so neat watching Paul Simon sing in such a calm voice. That's how he usually sang with Garfunkel. Just a quiet, soothing voice. LOL
steve WINWOOD wasnt in there, you must be mistaking another guy like JOEL wth the beard or kenny loggins for him
I love that Amber lit up at Paul Simon this time around. They both blew right past him, the first time.
I meant D. Hall so I changed it. ✌🏻
I was gonna comment on that too, that cracked me up !
I don't think there has ever been more talent in one place at the same time ever
Of course Quincy was and is still respected in the world of music even in 2022.
try watching the video for "Do They Know It's Christmas". it has more stars than whats assembled here!!!
I was thinking about how crazy it would be to be in that room.
My good friends sister in law is married to John Oates....
Never is a strong choice of words.
.. and they've reacted to several Hall & Oates songs and don't recognize him.
Youngs do not even recognize Steve Wonder, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles etc...
This brings tears. I was in my early 20s, I remember all of these artists. I love seeing younger people experiencing this for the first time
So many amazing singers with their own approach to their lines makes this song legendary!
Thank you!!
I was in college when it was played, and walking around campus with windows open at the dorms and hearing this song coming from everywhere was epic
We are the world… we make a better day!
I had to go back and watch the first one... and then watch this one. Goosebumps every time!
I think you are now, not only the best music reaction team, but have now become peace and kindness influencers. MAKE SOMEBODY SMILE!
Being born in '69 (arguably the best year ever for music) and being a teenager throughout the 80s, I just feel so lucky for all that I got to experience musically. And don't miss Dan Akroyd singing in there! The original Ghost Buster!
Actually, 1967 was the best tear for music; then 1968, and finally, 1969. You were close, though. LOL.
I was born in 1967, and to me 1984 was the best music year.
This song just gets better and better with every passing decade. These artists are all legends, and the message is timeless. Hopefully one day we will have ☮️ on 🌍
Would be wonderful to get todays top artists to sing in harmony to a song, part II of this composition....
LOL - yeah this is like the final exam for a music reactor! You 2 are so fun. Thanks for everything you do!!
Yes!!! Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram together is pure bliss!
The greatest moment in music history. Once in a lifetime. Blessed to have been able to see it when it happened.
I agree...Just Once was my favorite by him.
They missed John Oates too
Have they reacted to Huey Lewis & The News?
@@chrismcelligott5462 Yep, he came in later. :)
Great idea!
And he was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live.
Ruuuubber Biscuit . . .
@@eurofritz4617 Bow bow bow!
So many didn't get a solo, they all were met at the door with a sign that said "Check Your Egos"❤
No egos at all, just a huge amount of talent in one room. They spent a whole night to make this incredible Record and Job.
They left em at the door... 😁
Jay and Amber, thanks for giving us, yourselves and the music a year! You have given so many great smiles, and brought back great memories!
Peace.
The "who is that?" guy is James Ingram. He' was phenomenal! Check out "Ya Mo Be There" with James and Michael McDonald. :)
"If I hear 'Ya Mo Be There' one more time, I'm gonna ya mo burn this place to the ground!" - Paul Rudd
That one, yes
I was just a kid when this came out. I recall holding hands across our school for Africa. We raised money and were proud to help.
The one Amber asked about was James Ingram, "Just Once" is my favorite of his songs.
Hope this helps you guys…. 😊 thanks for the video!

If you ever get a chance, you should react to Phil Collins' with the band Genesis and their video to the song Land of Confusion. Its a great song, also very powerful meaning, but the best part is that its a tribute to all things 80s using puppets, even a reenactment to this music video.
The "powerful meaning" was little more than typical low-information rock star political posturing. It's about as deep as a puddle.
@deniserodriguez Yes!!! Great song!!!
@@btgiv6009 "Two men looked out from prison bars, One saw the mud, the other saw the stars."- Dale Carnegie
Massive Phil Collins fan, esp his 80's early 90's music. His tickets are like Rockinghorse sh!£,sold out in minutes, and rarely on sale unless ticket touts. Even tho his body is failing Phil, his mind and voice is still there, whitty as anything.
Q! That's who🤣
Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
Absolutely! 🌺✌️
I remember watching this on MTV …. I feel privileged for that……..❤
Interesting little piece of trivia, this was recorded immediately following that year's American Music Awards ceremony and most of the musicians went from the ceremony right to the recording studio. All told 45 artists were involved with the recording with another 50 having been turned away at the studio door.
Prince had a personal invitation from Quincy Jones, but Prince declined; but then later on in life he stated that he regretted missing out on such a wonderful fundraising singing experience.
Fun fact: Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles said that if they didn't get this in one take, they'd be driving everyone home
That was such a genuine and emotional song. What's sad are alot of the stars there are no longer with us.....THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US...!
His name is JAMES INGRAM and you NEED NEED NEED to hear more of his vocals. You can start with "Ya Mo Be There" a duet with Michael McDonald 🤟🏼
It truly upsetting more people in these comments didn't lead with this. At least "Baby Come to Me" or Secret Garden.
This was so fun to watch! You guys have grown so much, your reactions when you recognized the artists was great. Love your channel!!!
Cyndi Lauper is so adorable ❤. Love this song.
I checked it out on your recommendation and OMG!!!! Thank you!
Yep, Loved "Hear 'N Aid."
