Tommy showed that there's an important difference between having to fight "to be a man" and having to fight "when you're a man". Such a subtle switch in the words of the song conveys a very different meaning.
You ever see the movie? It basically shows the fight I LOVE IT as the father had step in to help the gaitlin brothers and so Tommys uncle who Kenny Rogers steps in and prevents him from helping them
Also, in his father's words, "walk away IF you can" implies there may be times when he can't
I always cried for Becky in this song. To have three men force her must have been terrifying. Tat her gentle Tommy was willing to lay them all out on a barroom floor, that's a real hero.
Always amazing to see reactors boppin' along until "they took turns at becky" and the whole mood changes

He didn't walk in on her being 'finessed'. He walked in after the fact, yes. And his daddy died in prison asking him to always try to avoid trouble. But the end of the song is Tommy realizing, sure you don't ALWAYS have to fight to be a man, but sometimes yes, you do have to fight to defend what you believe in.
And I always took it that she was forcibly "finessed".

I have heard this song all of my life. It is another example of a good story telling song. I have mentioned a few times about Marty Robbins. He is another legendary country storyteller. He also was a pioneer in Nascar. He has an entire album titled "Gunfighter Ballads". Any song on that album is awesome. I recommend "El Paso" to start with, but you could also do "Big Iron". All of those songs are Western and have a strong Mexican influence. You will love them.
Start with El Paso, then Feleena, then El Paso City. A great trio of stories I know you will thoroughly enjoy

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs. You've done a few of them already. He had so many hits "Lucille", "She Believes In Me", "You & I", "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town", "Reuben James" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight". He also did quite a few duets with Dolly Parton & Dottie West.

One part many don't catch... Tommy's dad said "walk away from trouble IF you can". He never expected his son to never fight if it was called for.
My favorite reaction to this song so far! I love the head fake that Kenny does making us all think Tommy might back down and then, Aww, just kidding, LOL, still gives me chills at the "...when Tommy stopped and locked the door..." I was raised on country music and Kenny has always been my favorite (along with Dolly). I cried when I found out he died. This song has always given me chills in the best way possible, and I always smile when he says Tommy turned and locked the door, because I know the Gatlin boys are about to get what's coming to them. The greatest thing about Kenny Rogers was the story delivery. He made you listen REALLY and it was some pretty good lessons. I know my Dad would make sure that my brothers understood the meaning and took it to heart. Not just the being a coward, or the treatment of someone weaker, or women, but also to make sure you take care of your own. Thank you again AB, every time you post one of these older country ones I’m flooded with memories of Dad and he’s been gone over 5 years. I hope one day soon you will do Merle Haggards “Silver wings” for me, that was a favorite and it’s a beautiful song.
