No, she was poor. Dolly Parton grew up dirt poor in rural Tennessee. This song is a 100% true story about her mother not being able to afford a coat for her.
The actual coat is on display at her museum.
And she never forgot where she came from. She has done so much for the people of Sevier County. She even has an amusement park there called Dollywood. Not long before the pandemic they had a big wildfire in Gatlinburg near Smoky Mountain National Park and Dolly donated millions to people affected. Her child literacy program is called Imagination Library and it sends a free book every month to children in the program. She won an award from the Library of Congress when they gave out their 100 millionth book. And she gave $1 million for Covid vaccine research. She is a national treasure.

As a Tennessean, Dolly is our queen! She started the imagination library for every child in Tennessee. Both my girls got a book every month in the mail until they were 5. She started it cause her dad was illiterate ❤️ she is a gem.
Great post Liz. I'm also from Tennessee and my grandsons also got the books when they were little. We also had season passes at Dollywood. We got to meet her once. She was so awesome and down to earth.

@@lizs.5046 Yes she did. Dolly is from Seveirville so that's her home and her people. The park was orgionally called Silver Dollar City. Here's a quote from Wikipedia: In 1986, Dolly Parton, who grew up in the area, bought an interest in Silver Dollar City. As part of the deal, the park reopened for the 1986 season as "Dollywood". In 2010, Parton said she became involved with the operation because she "always thought that if I made it big or got successful at what I had started out to do, that I wanted to come back to my part of the country and do something great, something that would bring a lot of jobs into this area."
Dollywood has approximately 4,000 people on its payroll, making it the largest employer in the community
This song always makes me cry. It’s based on a real event that happened to Dolly. My mom grew up in Tennessee in the 50’s (dirt poor), and literally the exact same thing happened to my mom. Every time I hear this song, I think of the undying love of my grandma. Such a beautiful and touching song.

What flies under the radar here is the sheer perfection of Dolly's musical performance. This was filmed in the 70s, before pitch correction and fancy effects were a thing. She filmed this in one take in a studio in the UK, no backup musicians or ANY editing. Just her on the guitar and her singing. Every note on the guitar, every pitch of her voice, every storytelling element is flawless. Dolly has long been known for her ability to recreate studio-quality performance in live concerts. Very few of her time or since have been able to match her.
I know a lot about Dolly. This is something I didn’t know. She came from a very large family!
Her guitar skills are unreal! I can’t believe they didn’t catch it. She’s playing rhythm & lead simultaneously with perfection. No one today can do that

My Aunt was a reading tutor. She passed away last year. Since there was no funeral, I donated to Dolly's Imagination Library in her name. $25.00 sends two books per month for one year all over the world. Best money I ever spent.
My favorite Dolly story is when she got her statue in Pigeon Forge. She asked her dad what he thought about it and he said something like, It's nice but birds still poop on it. Just to kinda keep her humble a bit I guess. Yet Dolly didn't know for a while that every evening her dad would clean the statue as best he could.

I made a sweater for one of my nieces, and she got laughed at the same way, because it was "made, not boughten". This wasn't down south, it was northern Ontario. There are small minded people everywhere. She'd gone to school wanting to show off her new sweater and came home in tears. My heart just broke for her.

Hello, I was going to mention that movie. I didn't know that there was a second part I saw the first one and I loved it. And Dolly was in it. Was there a part two? I know that the last few years it's played around Christmas time and it's a real sweet movie I think Amber would love it. 😊

This song touches so many people, and all so differently. I watched a young girl crying while listening, mom asked her why and she said she wanted a coat of many colors. Mom said i'll make you one, and the child said I'm still going to cry. Mom asked why,and she said because her voice sounds like love!
Dolly Parton - what can you say? She is one of a kind. I love her music so much and have listened to her for about 50 years. My mum took me to see her in Glasgow in 2011 - she had no support act, did both halves of the show herself. I've been to a lot of concerts over the years and seen artists that do so many different styles of music but she has got to be right up there with the best I've ever seen. She explained the significance of the songs without being a time waster. She plays so many instruments and is so bubbly, her personality is infectious.
15 seconds into this song and I'm already welling up with tears. This woman's voice is one of the purest sounds I've ever heard.
They weren't lower class, Dolly's always been very clear that they were dirt poor but that they had each other's love which sustained them. Many of her songs are autobiographical but she said this one was probably the most so.
That's why we down here love Dolly. Most of us grew up that way.

I love that line "One is only poor only if one choose to be." Dolly is such a treasure and her songs are little windows into her soul. This one hits me right in the feels! Especially because my mother has passed on and I have very vivid memories of her knitting a scarf and mittens for me and my twin sister. And as she knitted, she talked to us about the Bible and laid that foundation. I'm so blessed that my mother was engaged with us. So many kids today don't have that.
I have always loved the way you can hear her nails clicking on the strings as she plays the guitar. This song was about unconditional love and still brings me to tears.

Not only is Dolly a great song writer and singer, but she has also starred in many movies and t.v. specials. She has a very sharp sense of humor, is always incredibly positive and is just an all around wonderful person. The world could use a whole lot more people like her!

I met Dolly in 1983 I was 13 all I could do was cry in joy. In the 60s Dolly called my mom to thank her for the flowers my mom sent her.
Being an elementary teacher, you may have seen the book that goes with this song. I used to impress the kids by acting like I memorized a whole book and I would say the words while they read along in amazement!

Literally cry every time I hear it. I lost my mom to cancer when I was 23 and everything she made for me is still treasured so much. Dolly is amazing.
Several years ago, Dolly made a movie about her Coat of Many Colors. Three movies hoping you watch someday with Dolly, Coat Of Many Colors, 9 to 5, and a real tear jerker Steel Magnolias. Dolly shines like the beacon she truly is. Thanks for playing this sweet tune.

You can actually see the Coat of Many Colors in her museum located in her theme park Dollywood in Tennessee which is actually the largest ticketed attraction in the state. :)
Such a good , good song. She grew up dirt poor and what I love about her is she doesn’t shy away from talking about it. She’s humble and kind and pure class.
I saw Dolly once, a number of decades ago, at LAX as she was walking through a concourse. Someone asked her to stop for a picture with their child which she did quickly. She also responded and waved to people who said hello. I still remember being impressed by how cheerful and sincere she seemed (beautiful smile); nothing forced or phony about her.

Dolly is an international treasure. If more of us acted like her what an amazing world this would be. Love her program of giving books every month for a child's til they are 5 yrs. old. Think how many children will be able to read because of her foundation. Jordon, she's worn a wig ever since she started singing professionally. She grew up w/her family as dirt poor as you can get. No bathroom, no inside water, no electricity, no refrigeration. Wood stove for heat. Now you know why so many of us wanted you to hear this song.

Being a mother/grandmother myself, my thought came from the female body's perspective after giving birth..... there's never a time a woman is more maternal than after giving birth (no matter how many babies you've had) so this where my thought came from. I'm 65 and have listened to Dolly my whole life (thanks to my Dad) and I totally agree with you about the depth and beauty of her songs and their meanings. Take care. Peace.
Dolly grew up dirt poor, literally. No indoor plumbing and no electricity in those mountains. Paper on the walls to keep the winter cold out. Seeing snow through the floors and walls. One bed for too many kids. This legend is very humble and has given so much back. Her theme park is in Sevierville that employs a lot of her kin. She started the Imagination Library to combat illiteracy and it has grown tremendously through the world. When the wildfires destroyed many homes in 2016 she helped organize a benefit that raised millions and gave out checks for six months and than a final check for much more. This woman truly never forgot her home. She purchased the land her parents had their cabin on and she built a a little cabin on it. She will retreat to that when she wants. She took care of her parents, family and hometown and continues to do so.

I live only about 30 miles from where Dolly grew up. She is definitely the real deal. She has contributed amazing assistance to people in the area, from storybook hiking trails and age appropriate books monthly to EVERY kid living in the area, to many jobs at her Dollywood theme park to help raise folks out of poverty! She has good roots and hasn’t forgot it.

I think you'll like Brandi Carlile's "The Story". It's been covered by other singers but she's the original as far as I know. It was used in the movie "Lucky One".
On the face of it a very odd song about a coat. In reality its a beautiful true story. So emotional as well. And Dolly was truly poor and lived in the mountains of Tennessee where everyone was poor beyond belief. Such a great lady

20 years ago I visited a good friend, Jim, who lives in Knoxville. I flew all the way from the UK to see him and also to see Robert Earl Keen perform. The next day Jim drove me up in the Blue Mountains and we went past Dollywood. It was closed for the season but hearing Dolly always reminds me of the 4 days i spent in Tennessee
Thanks for doing this song. Dolly is a queen & fairy godmother rolled into one. Her family was so poor they had no electricity, running water or indoor bathroom. Counting her 12 siblings and parents they were 15 people living in a two room "shack" in the Smoky Mountains of TN, an economically depressed area of the state. A replica of the shack, built by her brother, is located at "Dollywood". Dollywood is a theme park she had built once she became successful to bring jobs to the area she grew up in. Dollywood is the largest employer in the area and employs approximately 4,000 employees. Dolly has a long history of philanthropy. She is not only beautiful on the outside, she's beautiful inside too, talented and has a wicked sense of humor.
My grandson got books from Dolly's Imagination Library when we lived in North Dakota. He loved getting books in the mail. And the books always had great subjects, like getting along with siblings, going for walks with grandparents, etc. Dolly is a national treasure.
There are two movies that tell you more about Dolly’s life. One is “Coat of Many Colors” and the other is a Christmas movie called “Circle of Love” … Both are just amazing and inspirational!
You should do the Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton live version of "We've got tonight", the song was originally recorded by Kenny Rodgers and Sheena Eastern, but the live version Kenny done with Dolly is so worth watching.

You really need to react to the Trio singing The Sweetest Gift. The Trio consisted of Dolly Pardon, Linda Rondstat, and Emmylou Harris. Three beautiful voices together they were angelic

One of Dolly's newer albums, Little Sparrow, has some great songs...Little Sparrow and Shine are particularly good. Dolly always says, "It costs a lot of money, to look this cheap!" (Dolly giggle)

To the point of bullying: in this house bad words are mean words and curse words are more considered like impolite words. My kids will be in trouble anytime they call some one like stupid but not in trouble if they let a shit slip hy in a sentence as a cuss word

Dolly Parton owns an amusement park in Tennessee, alongside has she donated money to Tennessee when a storm hit them bad. Dolly also donated 1 million for the foundation of the vaccine for covid.

Dolly has so many great songs, I love your suggestion. Love the Judds too. It's too bad they don't get more recognition on these reaction channels. I took a car trip many years ago across 5 states, the only tapes (before CD's) we listened to was Bruce Springsteen, Bad Co, Led Zeppelin, Bob Seger & the Judds! Funny thing was we had a case of other tapes but didn't listen to any of them & just had these 5 tapes on repeat. I also read Stephen Kings 1138 page novel "The Stand" on that drive. The music we listened too was great background music for reading. lol. Thanks for jogging memories I hadn't thought of in years. And, the reminder about the Judds, I'm going to start suggesting some of the their songs! Beautiful harmonies.
One of the many things I love about Dolly is her capacity to love others and give with her heart. She started with her 'Imagination Library' so that every child has a book to read. And her organization ships out millions of books every year to children all over at no cost to the child's family. She was also one of the first big name stars to come out in support of LGBTQ Rights and encourages the Drag Queens who dress like her for their shows. She said in an interview once that it was the highest form of love and flattery paid to her. She was a big advocate of AIDS Research and gave a million dollars to the C-19 Vaccine Research Teams to develop a vaccine. She never had children of her own and said it allowed her to love and care for children everywhere. She is truly a remarkable and beautiful woman, inside and out. A national treasure.
