I think the American toad and the pixie frog are the best pet amphibians. I was given a spotted salamander 2 months ago and haven't seen it eat yet. I breed dubias and red runners so it isn't like I don't have plenty of food. I've been keeping reptiles, amphibians and arachnids for 32 years now and even have bred several species so I don't know why this salamander won't eat in front of me. I have over 100 fire belly toad tadpoles right now so I must be doing something right at least. I even breed my own mice for my snakes. I also have 5 eastern box turtles whose previous owners didn't care for them properly. I have 3 males and 2 females who live in my backyard. My fence in buried 2 feet underground and set in concrete because we used to have a beagle who would dig out. My turtles cannot be released by law because it's unknown how long the previous owners had them or where the collected them from. I do release their babies in protected areas though as soon as they hatch.
I think I can finally put into words what I love about this channel so much: Clint talks to you like he's talking to a child, but not in a way that is even remotely talking down to you. And because you get to see his awe and excitement, you get to experience what its like to be like a child again experiencing these STINKIN' RAD animals, but in way that ultimately shows you that it it is cool to be like that as an adult :D
I love that! Kids are full of such awe and wonder and excitement to learn about animals and the world around them. Somehow we tend to lose that. That is sad. There is nothing that makes me happier than being able to rekindle that excitement in someone. Thank you for putting it into words.
I admire how you're so enthusiastic about every animal that you own to the point that you say everything that you do a video on might be the best. You can really see the passion in everything that you push out and its amazing.
I live in Minnesota as there was one who lived in my back yard and he would let me play with him all the time. Loved him. He had extra toes so I knew it was him every time. So cool!
I was in school so I didn’t get to see it right away but the second I got out I clicked on it and I am watching right now 😃 I love your videos and you make my day great thank you!!
These and redback salamanders are usually what I'm finding while looking for ringneck snakes. Those are my white whale, I've found species on the endangered list, sars, eastern massey's but no ringnecks :(
Had one for a while. I caught it as a hatchling and brought it home. His name was Bitey, because when he was tiny I thought it was cute when he would bite my finger during feeding. He would almost ignore what was being offered, and hit my finger instead. It was cute when he was the size of a quarter.... not so much once his shell was 6". I released him once he was too large, and I could not provide for him anymore. For years afterward he would come and swim around me, giving me " the eye".
Salamanders are such charmers as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a frog or toad guy but I could definitely see myself having a spotted salamander or axolotl. Thanks for this one!
I caught and kept a yellow spotted salamander as a kid and he was a great pet. Lived well into my late teen years. He was just so chill, but definitely a machine when there was a cricket to be had.
I live in a place where it can be dry for several weeks at a time but I always see brown tree frogs at night, despite their dry skin they manage. But give me a salamander any day for a pet amphibian (owned an axolotl once in the past).
I've owned one of these cute fellas for just over a year now. Beautiful and charming animals. Mine is rather picky about what he eats though. Only goes for medium-sized nightcrawlers, which I've made a farm for, and slugs. Holy moly he loves slugs. He'll snap them right off my finger if given the chance.
I've just recently started watching your channel and am SO happy you made this. Salamanders don't get enough good credit! I took in a rescue spotted salamander years ago and instantly fell in love. "Morty" always seemed to be out or in his log hide and not under the substrate, he was sure to let me know when he wanted food, and just had the best little personality. My mom who doesn't even like "slimy/scaly" animals made him a Christmas stocking (its tiny!). He passed back in February and took most of my heart with him. Never would have thought he'd be my "soul pet". Tattoo of him coming soon too! So thank you so much again for this video!
You're not the first one to say that. In fact, it is because people started telling this to me that I first looked up ASMR to find out what it was. Feel free to add our videos to your playlist. SOUNDS good to me 🤭
I love how happy he is in the beginning XD its so cute lol. I just recently went on a hike and found many salamander eggs laid in some puddles, the next day they were dried up but luckily I was able to save a few eggs. Hopefully I can raise themand release them back in the area. Probably also one of my favorite species!
They've lived under my porch here in northern VT, found a big one once and a few smaller ones. It was always a cool find, and I made sure to put them right back after observing them.
I fell in love with salamanders when I was in high school and had to take care of them in a class that I took for a year. They are so silly and cute. Very easy to take care of. At one point in college, I had five salamanders, including tiger, spotted, and marbles. I am planning to get one again once I have a place for their setup in my front room. I think my 4 year old will enjoy seeing one as a first non-furry pet. I am also considering a whites tree frog.
Another awesome vid. Honestly you've talked me out from buying atleast 2 animals already. And I dont take that as a bad thing. Its just that Im not ready yet for them ☺ P.S i hope you do the red belly salamander too. I've been seeing them around in the philippines and I hope to own one someday
I live in Maine so we have a lot of spotted salamanders. I’d go herping and find these guys under and in logs. I’d find them sometimes 7-8 inches. Really cool animals

I would put only a few small drainage holes in the lid of a clear rectangular shaped plastic tub with coconut substrate to hold moisture with Clips on the top which are very inexpensive, and would establish a colony of dairy cow isopods as a cleanup crew plus a food source.
I find blue spotted salamanders and the yellow spotted ones in my back yard a lot. Under like logs and stuff. I was gonna use some campfire wood but I left it alone sense it is there home.
One of these somehow got into my house. It must have walked right in through an open door. It really did have the cutest little face. It makes me wonder how they manage to survive the winter in my area.
Spotted Salamanders tend to hibernate in found burrows during the winter. Usually they are content to relax under piles of leaves or abandoned tunnels and burrows from other animals.
I have one and he's badass he's probably around 8 inches and he has way more yellow spots than this one that your showing but also missing a few things the like it around 64 degrees and yes they do bite but not hard they are a very good pet and you don't really have to feed them near as often
I have one too and a beautiful marbled salamander but I can't seem to get them to eat but I've had them for over a month and they seem healthy...any tips?
Had a western tiger for years and years and it grew to 13" or so. low cost and easy care. Yeah they are cute. Sad so many get run over on the roads around here. 😢

Our basement used to be perpetually wet, and we had these guys in there all time. I thought about keeping one as a pet, since it was already in my house, but I ultimately decided against it. They're super cool though!
I found a much smaller version in my hallway two months ago, about 4" long, covered in cat hair and very dehydrated. I gave him a soak in rain water and set up a plastic container with soil, moss, etc. He's doing great on a diet of worms, slugs, isopods and small insects. I had no idea of the life span, a decade? I live in Massachusetts, I'm wondering if that's why it's smaller or could it just be young? Great video, I learned a lot.
i keep these animals in a half inch of coir over a screen with rocks and water beneath(vivarium) half land half water. heavily carpeted with plants and a porous foam background. this allows you to see the animal all day without it burrowing although it still has an opportunity to hide :D this setup works with all mole salamanders to keep them comfortable while also preventing them from digging and never seeing them.
Thanks Clint for commenting of my frogs page called stay chubby with chubs we do upload almost every day and starting next week we will try to have livestreams every Thursday. I love the videos also.
What did you find the most challenging when you were studying zoology? I want to enrol but I failed high school maths and a few of the core subjects are mathematics.
So awesome. As strange as it seems, I'm torn between a fire salamander in a bioactive set up and a black headed monitor when I'm done with my own postgrad labyrinth. What would you go with, Clint?

Funny story regarding these fellas getting out...
We were doing yard work, taking out old rotted railroad ties for the garden and replacing them with fresh ones that weren't going to fall forward. I happened to spot one of these spotted salamanders, and having taken care of many different pets i planned to keep it for a few days to show my nieces since they aren't the most outdoorsy.
Well... It climbed out. Had it in the basement, near my large aquariums. Searched for several days everywhere i could, finding dust bunnies and lost items galore, but never a live salamander nor a dead body. It was pretty sad. That was in June.
Just this December, 2020 the same year i saw him the first time, i am tending to my tanks and i see a large black thing moving along the wall. Look over and what do i find? This silly salamander, still alive, not looking all that unhealthy all things considered. Still alive after 5 months. Between the humidity of my tanks, splashed water, and random spiders in the basement i guess he was able to make do.
So now i have him as a permanent pet, with a proper enclosure, being fed and watered plenty. They are adorable and i am glad it didn't die.

i keep these animals in a half inch of coir over a screen with rocks and water beneath(vivarium) half land half water. heavily carpeted with plants and a porous foam background. this allows you to see the animal all day without it burrowing although it still has an opportunity to hide :D this setup works with all mole salamanders to keep them comfortable while also preventing them from digging and never seeing them.
Clint this was the best video you ever made great job 🐶🦎🐱🐢🐸
Hopefully that is because this video is great and not because the others are all terrible...
Hi love the vids, can you do a Schneider’s skink video
Thanks Clint for commenting of my frogs page called stay chubby with chubs we do upload almost every day and starting next week we will try to have livestreams every Thursday. I love the videos also.
Super cool! Say hi to that chubby frog of yours for me :)
i thought it’s eye went missing when it blinked 😂 so cute!
i've seen many of these guys, a few miles west of Boston, MA in a conservation area. You want to de-chlorinate the tap water used.
Hey clint luv ur vids and are thinking about getting a bearded dragon could u please do a how to care and put to gether a habitat or enclosure
We have a video like this one about bearded dragons.
Loved it!! Amphibians rock!!
They are pretty darn amazing!
Finding a captive bred tiger salamander is a struggle. There are a few of these and fire salamanders foo. But I want to go big darn it!
What did you find the most challenging when you were studying zoology? I want to enrol but I failed high school maths and a few of the core subjects are mathematics.
Could you please please please do a video on caecilians? They are endlessly fascinating! (PS What were you singing at the end there?)
This man is so wholesome
Objection! My sister's spotted salamander tried to eat me, weirdest feeling ever. It was like trying to be eaten by a living toothbrush.
Sarah it tried to EAT YOUR FINGER not your WHOLE body!!!
Love your channel, this video helped me A lot :)
Do tiger salamanders!
I have a pet spotted salamander named Spotty, I love him.
So awesome. As strange as it seems, I'm torn between a fire salamander in a bioactive set up and a black headed monitor when I'm done with my own postgrad labyrinth. What would you go with, Clint?
Both.
But as the owner of a tristis monitor, I would recommend an ackie.
Really? Why? I like the slightly bigger size of the tristis.
Nm I rewatched your video. What I'd really like is a V. semiremex......havent been able to find them here in the states though
Salamanders are so fun. They are so cute and will eat anything.
I love salamanders so much 😭💕
For good reason!
Last summer I found a salamander just like that one but the size of my pinky finger and its was one of the cutest things ever
They are cute when they're little... And when they're big.
I just uncovered a bunch of them in the woods!
Can you keep two of these in the same encloser?
