I appreciate the concious effort to not have over weight salamanders. They have to hunt in the wild and really search out their prey. They miss more than they catch. I've never found a fat salamander in the wild. Even tigers are plump and round but not fat
thx for listening to my suggestion, I really love the new setup!
Thanks this was very informational, I am redoing my tigers 40 gal tank right now so this was very useful. I have a similar set up but I am trying to find a way to include a forest soil are for them to borrow in. I have been told by some tiger sally owners that are more knowledgeable then I that it is important to provide a soil substrate for them to dig and borrow. I am trying to figure out a way of doing this without them dirtying the water so much with soil when they take a swim after they burrow. I think I am just going to have to clean the water filters more often. ☹️ Thanks again it was a very good video.
No problem and thank you! Yeah, they are messy little critters! Having a rich substrate layer is key as they are fossorial. Typically they spend much of their time underground
Great video!. I have an axolotl that's morphing. Not intentionally but I hear once they morph, their care is equivalent to a tiger salamander.
Yes, I’ve heard similar things. I’ve never kept axolotls, but have seen morphed individuals and they closely resemble Tiger salamanders
Dope!
13:40 “I’m really…lichen…it.” 😏
Good job Mike. Question did you coat foam first with quikcrete cement and then add coat of drylock?.
We have wild tiger salamanders here (Alberta)and I've caught several .They are pretty well always near water but all caught on land. They do burrow into ground cover all the time, in fact I'd say that's there preference so make sure you have deep loose substrate .Gord
how do you do the in and outtake of the water i tryed to build something like this but i am always having leaks
Looks great. What's the difference between Drylok and Quickrete? Do they accomplish different purposes when painting over/covering expanding pond foam?
Quickcreat is a layer of quick drying concrete to help make it more solid and give it more of the rock look. Drylock is a waterproof paint/sealant that was created for house foundations, but I never thought about using it over aquarium rock to get the colors I want, I like that idea. They also make sand and texture powder that you can add to paints like drylock to give it a more rocky look.

Tried buying a couple tigers a few days ago, when I got them home found out they were Spanish ribbed newts. Hope I can get my money back and get some actual tiger salamanders.
If I did this with my old one he’d destroy it in a matter of days
It’s the struggle of having a cool salamander
Whats the purpose of the false bottom?
Drain water from the terrestrial area. You don’t want water to saturate the substrate otherwise it can become anaerobic and that’s a big problem.
How did you create the land portion?
Used acrylic sheets siliconed to make water tight, then built up rocks and used great stuff pond & stone to hold together and fill gaps. Also used coco fiber and put over smeared silicone in the e posed foam parts
I have a barred tiger salamander
Good video but would have liked if you so showed you doing the "boring steps" you completely skipped over. Those were the things I needed taught to me and now I still don't know what to do.
Thanks. Unfortunately, this was a rebuild. I didn’t ever film the original build which would have probably showed you how I constructed this one specifically. I have a lot of similar builds which I did create a DIY video.
