I can really tell Dr. Okada really takes such good and attentive care of these animals. That salamander was so calm the entire time, it never panicked or lashed out defensively, even despite the fact that it was once hurt by people accidentally. It knew it was safe and didn't seem stressed in the slightest. The littler ones seemed to be very similar in behavior! It's good to know that such a magnificent and potentially vulnerable creature is so well looked after and respected.

It's a nice shelter and they won't notice a difference between a natural river or an artificial pond, it is much safer and water quality is well controlled (they are very sensitive to water pollution). Seriously the research facility wants to PROTECT this vulnerable species.

Hello fly crap, it's a dump and nothing else. There are even car tires amongst many other crap decomposing in this so called institute . Keeping rubbish out has nothing to do with renovating.

And believe me when I say some "institutes" I have seen, are nothing more than a small Camper. People think of research institutes as what they see in movies as pristine buildings with art and beautiful architecture... Most research is done in places like this because scientific research is so poorly funded world wide.
At the end of this episode it showed me how it truly awesome the salamander can be and that made me feel very special to realize that the salamander is not what most people would have thought

I sought out this salamander and found your video because I found what I believe to be several young ones, living in the water near my house. I bought an old Japanese kominka style house in Hiroshima Prefecture's countryside last Christmas. Since then, I have found quite an assortment of interesting things -- just like being on a treasure hunt. Most recently, I found a WWII officer's katana and discovered these little salamanders living in some water in front of my house, which is always there whether there is rain or not. Currently, a friend's mom, who works at Hiroshima university, is going to show my video of these critters to the science department to find out if they really are the unique Osan Sho uo. If they are, then I am concerned for their safety as they are exposed in their current location, and will take steps to have them properly relocated. Very exciting stuff!
