After seeing a lot of your comments I did more research and it’s hard to find the information, because a lot of people do say it’s good but it does in fact make it harder for them to breathe and is NOT GOOD! There are other methods like aquarium salt, epsom salt, different leaves, and other items that work well for different infections/diseases and depending on what it is. - You need a microscope to show the cycle :P In all seriousness, you set up a tank and wait, there is not much to "show" really. You can ofc measure your water for ammonia and nitrites, but basically thats it. - You can help cycle a tank(basically instanty cycle it) if you squeeze your filter sponge in the water and use used aquarium water to start it. Ofc It works only if you used a declorinator before, because clorine kills all the bacteria. The only downside to it, is if you dont have anything living( plants) in it, than the bacteria will die off because they have nothing to eat. You can keep the rescued fish in a plastic container, all it "really" needs is a heater and a filter.
You set up a temporary tank for the fish and use already cycled aquarium water you can buy at the store, wait about a week(7days) for the tank to cycle, the fish will be very stressed if the tank isn’t fully cycled and will most likely not survive
I have the Walmart 5 gallon kit, I found that filling the aquarium up higher than usually made mine gentler, and I also replaced the cartridge thingy with a cut piece of imagitarium replacement sponge material- and it works really well now.

Thanks so much! This was very helpful. I used to have a betta for 5 years. Sadly last year he passed away. His name was Carl. BUT luckily on Friday, I am buying a new betta and supplies!
From my experience with the 5 gallon kit, I totally agree that the filter is way too strong for a betta for a 5 gallon, but I actually have one right now in a 10 gallon for my betta on the lowest setting and it works perfectly fine! So I don’t know how well this helps, but just keep in mind that’s how strong that filter is- love your videos!

I prefer pellets in general. Easier to know how much food your betta eats and prevent lots of extra food falling to the bottom. Most pellets also float longer than flakes. I don't like bettafix as it can coat their swim bladder and kill them. I use antibacterial medication for fish and aquarium salt. Much safer. I have purchased a few silicone plants to replace the old BAD plastic ones I had and honestly they are great. 👌 Their soft and many move around with the light filters making em look really realustic. Ive had two in my 5 gallon tanks for months and my babies love em
My boys were rescues from a pet store that they were literally starved in. They are now happy healthy boys. Got one at a time. After I moved and gave up my other 3 Betta fish. I've been following you for a long time. Your videos are ok. Your Betta videos are much better than most peoples. I have my Betta fish in nothing more than 3 gallon tank or bigger. If necessary for a temporary tank I use a 1.5 gallon tank until I get a better one. But they are happy Bettas.
I love this channel it has helped me with taking care of my own bettas which I didn’t completely know how to take the best care of my bettas I also have had silicon plants in a tank and the betta fish seemed to do alright with them but he was doing a lot better before I added the plant so it’s best to just use silk and not silicone
I got a half moon Beta and he’s currently in the most generic plastic fishbowl with only navy blue gravel T-T I’m working on getting a glass tank and a moon rock hide. My house is a tropical climate and always warm so I don’t really need a water heater but I will get him a bigger bowl and hides. Thank you for making these videos it’s so wonderful to see someone concerned with the aquatic life(I feel as if it doesn’t get that much attention).
I was in both of those stores getting betta stuff today lol. I say the rainbow decoration and thought it was super cute but I prefer a more natural looking habitat. I actually bought the hammock and the floating log today.
Thank you so much for telling me the products that are recommended and the products that are not the best for your betta. I am a new betta owner and I now I feel like the items in my tank are way better so thank you 😊
I tend to go all natural with live plants and rock hides. Favoured plant by my bettas are java fern as the leaves are better for resting on. As substrate tend to use aqua soil as have live plants nd works amazing for keeping tank balanced.
Your awesome! The way you care and take the time to do these videos for those of us still learning and telling pet stores to care better for their bettas! just because these fish can SURVIVE in such small places doesnt mean they should or should be left with out so much as even a siphone in water change. :( Thanks for keeping it simple and real!!!
I’m planning on getting a 29 gallon! I’ve watched to many videos of your and many more others.. so I think I’m possibly ready for my betta and some other fish. I can possibly get it next month!
I currently have a betta names Poseidon he is turning 4 this year and the hammock he absolutely loves! His food is a mix of frozen shrimp blood worms and plankton. He has been living in a glass vase and I just recently upgraded him to a 5 gallon tank and he absolutely loves it this video helped so much with his new tank!
I’ve had tanks for a while but a few weeks ago I got some bettas and they were in their own quarantine section for a while. Yesterday and a bit of today I set up the tanks (they’ve been cycled already!) and I’m trying out new plants. They have three live plant species right now, soon to be four. I’ve got big rocks from the beach an a piece of wood from the beach too for natural stuff. As well as sand and the other necessary.
So glad I found this channel.. 2 wks with my betta and love him. I have to move him to a different location because I have him in from of the window but use a stock paper where he is to keep the heat off and his temp stays good. But the store told me I don't need a heater *which I got anyway* or filter.. which I don't have.. water is staying pretty clear. I hear you don't need LED either because they promote algae.. I've been constantly research and get conflicting info.
Ive been binge watching your betta videos and i decided to get one recently, its doing so good and all thanks to you!! Please make more of these ''What to get for your betta'' videos etc i wanna make sure my betta will be the happiest fish out there!
In England, most of our aquatic shops aren’t chain stores and are ran by people who actually take care of them and sell good quality things only, it makes me really sad seeing them sold in cups in Walmart

I got a new fish yesterday and I got a little silicone flower and it has been in there since yesterday and my tank , water and fish look perfectly clean and healthy so I think silicone flowers are good for fish tanks 🎉
I bought 2 bettas in the 99 cent store , I put them in 1 gallon jars , i had them for a week in those jars bought a 2.5 gallon jar with a divider they were there for there for one week now they are in 3 Gallon tanks with filter and heater 😭😭😭 they made it that far im so happy they were injured too so I bought some medicine Ill do my best to make them happy 😭 THANK YOOOUUU I needed this
Me too ! I bought a betta in the 99¢ he was dying already. I have a 10 gallon tank and I honestly didn’t think he was going to make it Bc he wouldn’t swim at all nor be able to go to the top he would just lay in the bottom and had no color and his fins were not right but I didn’t gave up and now I’ve been having him for 7 months ! He is so much happier now than he was before.
My fish absolutely love the Fluval Bug Bites! My blue betta, for the longest time, it was the ONLY thing she would eat. My orange betta will eat literally anything I put in her tank, so I have to be very careful what and how much I give her, but the blue betta is very, very picky about her food. Although I just a few weeks ago discovered these Top Fin Betta Crumbles which she actually really likes, and in forums everybody seems to agree they are pretty good on the nutrition, so now I can finally give my blue betta a daily alternation in foods. And that cave you showed, I got that same cave for each of my bettas, and they definitely appreciate having it! The log is worth a shot, but it will depend on the fish - my orange betta loves, absolutely LOVES, the log, and most nights will sleep inside it. My blue betta has only ever been scared of it, flaring at it constantly whenever I put it in the water, and she never got used to it, so I eventually had to give up trying. The Top Fin silk plants are also big winners with my fish. I got that leaf hammock too, but my fish never showed any interest in it. That said, I have silk plants which have leaves that reach all the way up to the surface of the tank, and they very much like to use those leaves to rest on (or sometimes, to rest under).
@@vibinaddie2003 2.5 is a bit small i’d say the minimum is a 5.. in a 2.5 though do not get any tetras or guppies like the comment says because 2.5 is way too small for all of those things and the betta will attack. i’d try to upgrade soon to at least a 5 if i were you !
About sand: Sand is inert, which let's deadly gasses that come from waste and rotting food get trapped and build up. Its a good idea to mix the sand around every so often and clean it really well to prevent this. If the gas bubbles get too big, they'll escape the sand dissolve into the water, which can kill your fish. Also, if you have live plants, the sand (like regular gravel) has no nutritional value so you'll have to use root tabs if you keep root feeders.
@@paigek409 Yes, unless you have plant substrate, you need root tabs for root feeders. If you have water column feeders, you don't because they use up nitrates.
I’ve been waiting for a video like this. I’m waiting for a new heater to coke to upgrade my betta from a 3.5 to a 5.5 gallon tank and want to make it ‘homey’ for him. I’ve added live plants and moss balls to his 3.5 when I got him, but I’m hoping to give him more in his bigger tank.
13.21 don’t mean to sound like rude just trying to spread awareness api betta fix is actually bad for the betta because when you put it in the tank it’s like a oily substance it’s tea tree oil once ur betta take a breath of air it’s labyrinth organ will be coated with oily substance which will make it hard for them to breath it also does not work fast at all
Oh wow, I didn’t know that. Thanks for commenting this. A lot of UA-camrs I watched and research showed it was a good product, I’ll have to look into this.
I've spoken to a few hard-core betta enthusiasts. (I lucked out and a woman with thirty bettas was working at the aquarium store I went to when I was dealing with my first betta health crisis) and her two cents are: betta fix is okay, but in your case it's like using essential oil instead of anti-biotics. Buy the anti-biotics for this illness and maybe include the betta fix occasionally, as like a supplemental preventative. Definitely did not say anything about the oil clogging the labrynth organ. I don't use it personally anyway, but I'll deffo do more research into that b/c I do use API betta safe.
I was so sad when I recently moved, because I loved the local pet store that I was always going to. They kept their bettas in pretty small temporary enclosures, but they would do twice daily water changes from this massive supply of cycled water that they kept along the back wall, where they kept some of their plants. Hopefully I find a nice store near where I am now!
@@spore8391 i would recommend nerite snails. they’re my recommendation because they do not reproduce asexually which is a big thing for me bc snails reproduce quite quickly given the chance. they also are a smaller snail which is beneficial because with some of the larger ones like a mystery snail, the antenna can wiggle around and the betta will sometimes attack them there. i also think they’re great because they come with many different shell patterns and overall are just my recommended snail. they also keep algae levels down and keep your substrate clean.
Wait... the package you showed that said “as seen on tv” I think it’s that weird fish tank with the plush animal thing around it..... I saw it on tiktok twice and I was watching betta vids cuz I’m getting a betta on Monday and I’m rlly excited
Im getting a betta fish soon this is not only helpfull! But fun to watch! I have a 5 gallon and a 10 gallon tank i got my five gallon today so im looking for prouducts and decor and fish to put in it.
My bettas never liked having companions of any kind. The only one that tolerated a small snail or crab was Blackberry (about 10 years ago), but all the others I had killed the crabs.
We always had a snail with our bettas. Kept the tank super clean. Made the mistake of having 2 snails and ended up giving the Betta a lot of eggs to snack on.
I'm glad you said something about the cups, I work for the company and would be ashamed if our cups looked like that. I do know right now the company let go of many people and associates are super overworked and understaffed so things don't get finished. However, they were really bad and if the Betta's were housed in tanks this wouldn't be an issue to begin with!.
6:08 it’s a good tank I have it for my sisters betta, the filter is like an overflow filter and doesn’t have a lot of movement for the water just like bettas like, I recommend for sure
I gotta question so i am a school nurse and i wanted to get a fish i havent had one since i was a kid.. i got a tank 2.5 yea i know i should have gotten a bigger one however i bought the water they recommend and they said i should wait 3 days until i actually buy a fish so that i don’t shock it. Is this true.? Any tips for me?
@just me yo yes i did his name is milo i have him in a 3.5 gallon but i just bought a 10 gallon for my home I’m going to get another betta i love him so much!
I have the 3.5 gallon betta flo cylinder tank. There's the column in the center that sucks water through slats at the bottom of the tank under the rocks/gravel, and filters it in the center column before it spouts out of the top and creates a soft waterfall at the top of the tank. I've never had any fish get stuck at the bottom or washed away at the top, and I attach the heater at the back of the tank no problem. The biggest problem I've had with the tank is making sure that the decorations actually fit, since the curve is pretty steep. If you've got a place to send pics, I can show you the fishes and set ups I've had for those tanks, since I have three of them. I'm sitting next to one of them now lol with my betta Nyx.
Love ur channel u inspired me to get a betta fish keep up the great work 👍 And I think top Fin makes a lot of good fish care products and some bad ones but I do like top fin tanks
6:08 I HIGHLY do not recommend this product. The inside edge is super sharp. I have had several and they crack if the water is heated. Mine cracked and cut up my betta pretty bad.
This is a great video... Sand is great but so hard to vacuum. I did not find it easy to clean at all. It is so sad they keep those in tiny bowls but they do that bc of the coat to bowl them separately. Bc they can’t be bowled together with most fish, that’s why they keep in those
One thing you can do is start teaching lid taps to your betta. My bettas have learned that two taps on the top lid of the tank means food and they all come rushing out so that may be something to help make sure they eat
I LOVE your vids!!! You are a betta cel eb! If that's appropriate lol I have 2 bettas in separate tanks, 2 2.5 betta tanks that I threw away the aqueon filters! And got a sponge filter for both betta tanks, now I know you did a vid about those cheap sharp plants from wal mart but Timofrey and Viktor loves them so I decided to keep them in their tanks! Keep up the good work and here is them! I hope one day you will comment on their tanks and give me pointers! Again keep up the good work and I want some of your merchandise!!!
My betta loves the betta log but after a few weeks the paint started to come off and float on top of the water and my betta would eat it so I took it out
I got a beta a month ago I didn’t know this but I neglected her I only found out because of your vids I got a 5 gallon tank, sand, and 3 hides thank you!
BTW anything with the name “fix”’ in it ISNT GOOD !!! Like betta fix etc. It is an oily substance that actually contains cheap and harmful type ingredients :)
It contains tea tree oil, which is an essential oil, and not particularly oily, and in such a small amount it's not harmful. The "oily" substance you speak of is probably the aloe which helps protect the slime coat fish need.
double check that the built in filter ( in the starter kit) does have a little slider on the back bottom. if it does u can actually restrict the flow through it and make it better for a betta.
I just changed my Berta’s tank to a 10 gallon and she is so much happier and before I had a like 3 gallon tank. You can see how much happier she is

The tetra heater that you showed in the beginning works so well. By far my favourite for my betta tanks
So glad I discovered this channel!!
He needs a filter
I was in both of those stores getting betta stuff today lol. I say the rainbow decoration and thought it was super cute but I prefer a more natural looking habitat. I actually bought the hammock and the floating log today.
Thank you so much for telling me the products that are recommended and the products that are not the best for your betta. I am a new betta owner and I now I feel like the items in my tank are way better so thank you 😊
I tend to go all natural with live plants and rock hides. Favoured plant by my bettas are java fern as the leaves are better for resting on. As substrate tend to use aqua soil as have live plants nd works amazing for keeping tank balanced.
i love your channel! you’ve really helped me with my betta fish, francisco!! thank you so much!!!! please keep posting betta videos! :)
And I still say this is the best channel at UA-cam and I hope that It's gets bigger and bigger ! Spongies is a good name
I love this channel too. If you like Bettas check out my channel too :)
“Little fishies”, or “Star-fish”, or “School of fishies” (and your like the “teacher”) I’m not sure, I’m not good with names lol 😂
Abi D Oh! Sorry, I didn’t realize someone else had star-fish!
Abi D Thanks for understanding! :)
Check my my betta fish videos 🐠 thanks!😊
Belmo Films oooh!
Lol
I’ve been waiting for the TO BUY!
Glad I could post it!
Why don't you call us the Betta squad 😂
Check my my betta fish videos 🐠 thanks!😊
Yessss why couldn’t I think of that genius!
I like that name

awesome video Kayla! I love betta videos!!
Ive been binge watching your betta videos and i decided to get one recently, its doing so good and all thanks to you!! Please make more of these ''What to get for your betta'' videos etc i wanna make sure my betta will be the happiest fish out there!
In England, most of our aquatic shops aren’t chain stores and are ran by people who actually take care of them and sell good quality things only, it makes me really sad seeing them sold in cups in Walmart
that is why i went crazy and reasearched for 6 months before i got my betta
🙆♀️🐠... yes Flow ( males stars & stripes) gave me a reason to be on earth. Have Flow 3 months now but last 3 days hes off. Eating activities & hangout around heater. Hows your 🐠. Petsmart 1hr drive. No computer/ social media. 🎶🎵🎶🎶 & 🐠 mellow mostly.
@@sandraragole2411 my betta is doing great!
hows ur fish?(im pretty sure my betta ,spark,is a rosetail but im not sure)
I got a new fish yesterday and I got a little silicone flower and it has been in there since yesterday and my tank , water and fish look perfectly clean and healthy so I think silicone flowers are good for fish tanks
🎉
I bought 2 bettas in the 99 cent store , I put them in 1 gallon jars , i had them for a week in those jars bought a 2.5 gallon jar with a divider they were there for there for one week now they are in 3 Gallon tanks with filter and heater 😭😭😭 they made it that far im so happy they were injured too so I bought some medicine Ill do my best to make them happy 😭 THANK YOOOUUU I needed this
They should each get a 3g tank ot tub with filter
You could go bigger maybe 5 gallon? But nice job!
@@maybemaple4508 i already have ! They now have 5 gallons 😁
@@graphicdesigner4301 Good for you and them!
I recently bought the Top Fin 3.5 gallon tank and it has a really gentle filter and a filter guard so the betta won’t get sucked into it accidentally.
I love this tank. It was my very first and it was really cheap too
I only have 2.5 is that okay for a betta..?
@@vibinaddie2003 it’s a little small, but doable, you might also wanna consider tetras or a couple fancy guppies
@@vibinaddie2003 I tad bit small i would go for a 3 gallon
Yassss first fintastic video keep it up
About sand: Sand is inert, which let's deadly gasses that come from waste and rotting food get trapped and build up.
I have my plants in gravel, do I need root feeders for them??
@@paigek409 Yes, unless you have plant substrate, you need root tabs for root feeders. If you have water column feeders, you don't because they use up nitrates.
Actually I advise not mixing the sand but using a gravel vac. You can screw up your tanks cycle mixing the sand up.
I was unaware too. But I mix it with water first and wait to add it.
I don't use it personally anyway, but I'll deffo do more research into that b/c I do use API betta safe.
ahhh thank you ive been waiting for this video ever since you posted what not to buy! love the vids :)
When I first got my betta fish it was less than an inch long in a small box I saved it and now she’s happy and loves me
I got mine yesterday, he's really tiny so I'm hoping he gets more colorful and grows!
I've used the very few silicone plants, but what I do know from my experience is that they get dirty fast.
Thank you for the information, i imagine anything that isn't a live plant will get dirty quickly
What kind of snails?
@@spore8391 i would recommend nerite snails. they’re my recommendation because they do not reproduce asexually which is a big thing for me bc snails reproduce quite quickly given the chance. they also are a smaller snail which is beneficial because with some of the larger ones like a mystery snail, the antenna can wiggle around and the betta will sometimes attack them there. i also think they’re great because they come with many different shell patterns and overall are just my recommended snail. they also keep algae levels down and keep your substrate clean.
Yes a have a 10 gallon for my betta fish now I know the stuff to but it for sure thank you love your videos!!
I swear when I saw there was a koi betta fish design on they merch I was like, I need it😂🐟
This is definitely needed for people who plan to keep a beta, and never had research, this is spectacular 😊
Wait... the package you showed that said “as seen on tv” I think it’s that weird fish tank with the plush animal thing around it.....
The dislikes are from the unapproved products
I have a 5g tank with my BETTA in it and some of the things you got I have in my tank keep up the good work on your UA-cam videos 😀😀
Is it ok to have aquarium snails or small carbs with them? Like from pet smart or pet co
It depends, I got one for my tank with my betta and she killed it but yours could be different. :)
My bettas never liked having companions of any kind. The only one that tolerated a small snail or crab was Blackberry (about 10 years ago), but all the others I had killed the crabs.
Don’t put crabs or craws in with then but you can use shrimp or snails
We always had a snail with our bettas. Kept the tank super clean. Made the mistake of having 2 snails and ended up giving the Betta a lot of eggs to snack on.
I'm glad you said something about the cups, I work for the company and would be ashamed if our cups looked like that. I do know right now the company let go of many people and associates are super overworked and understaffed so things don't get finished. However, they were really bad and if the Betta's were housed in tanks this wouldn't be an issue to begin with!.
I have that 3.5 gallon tank it works great!! I totally recommend it!
So do I it’s nice
6:08 it’s a good tank I have it for my sisters betta, the filter is like an overflow filter and doesn’t have a lot of movement for the water just like bettas like, I recommend for sure
It’s true the betta leaf hammock is ok but imo floaters and tall big leaved plants are better

Thank you for the help! Setting up a new tank for my bettas. Getting rid of my 1 gallon bowl
I surprised you didn't mention indian almond leaves or leaf extract
Love ur channel u inspired me to get a betta fish keep up the great work 👍

I’m new to keeping betta tanks and went for silicone plants straight up. I have found no problem with them at all, my betta loves the silicone plants.

Bc they can’t be bowled together with most fish, that’s why they keep in those
Can you do a video about how to take care of a blind betta?
One thing you can do is start teaching lid taps to your betta. My bettas have learned that two taps on the top lid of the tank means food and they all come rushing out so that may be something to help make sure they eat
Hi there! I have a video on my channel about aging bettas. You may find it useful. Feel free to check it out.
I LOVE your vids!!! You are a betta cel
eb!
I can't add videos of my betta LOL
You definitely are awesome at educating us on how to care for a betta. Your videos are so helpful.
I'm 14 just got My kuhlis in and i found out that they will be with my till my 20's
My betta loves the betta log but after
a few weeks the paint started to come off and float on top of the water and my betta would eat it so I took it out
I have the log but I've never had the paint come off O.O

Hey can you please respond i have watched you since 4k subs🥺
I would get it A net. Not a fish net but a female betta named “Annette” 😂
First time beta owner and I appreciate this video so much! Thank You🙏🏽
