    Interesting fact
    The filmmakers were afraid that the little girl would be afraid of Boriss in makeup. Turns out she was quite taken with him and, in fact requested to ride to the shooting location with him.

    • @h.calvert3165
      @h.calvert3165 3 роки тому +228

      Both animals & children adored Boris. A friend of his invited him to a houseparty, warning her staff not to tell her little girl who he was, as she was afraid the child would be frightened. She got busy with her preparations, & Boris arrived unannounced. When she finally went looking for her daughter, she found her settled on Boris's lap, while he read to her. Later, she cautiously asked the child, "Did you like Mr. Karloff?" The little girl explained, "Oh, yes! And it's not just because he's so beautiful!" 📚
      Other friends had a huge German shepherd, which was so savage that it would scarcely let anyone outside of the family into the house. When Boris visited, it spent the whole time with its head in his lap, while he skritched behind its ears. After Boris had died, the dog's mom heard him raising an awful commotion in the living room one day. When she walked in to see what was wrong, she found that the television had been left on, & an old movie of Boris's was playing. The dog was going frantic trying to break into the cabinet to get to his old friend. 📺
      Check out his (grown-up) friend Cynthia Lindsay's book, Dear Boris, for many other such anecdotes! ☕

    The scene with the little girl is my favorite horror movie scene of all time. It’s so tragic because he doesn’t even truly understand what he’s capable of, doesn’t truly understand death, and kills the first and only friend he has. It wasn’t a murder. It was an accident. And a tragedy for both characters and the father. To me this movie isn’t a horror film, but a tragedy in which the monster is a victim

It think the movie scene because he's already faced people hurting them, so adds another layer to his character! The monster is the most misunderstood horror movie “villain.” Mary Shelley does a good job in having on examine their ideas and it’s a great philosophical book. One of the biggest questions of the book is “Who is the real monster?” The monster could have been a normal (though he’s actually quite smart and philosophical) person but the disgust and fear others have towards the Monster infuriate him. The story comes out to you realizing that the true monster of the story was Frankenstein himself and humanity as a whole. ALSO FUN FACT: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is actually considered one of the first science fiction books.
    (Don’t come for me though because I haven’t fully read Frankenstein but I have done a presentation on it and did some research)

      His appearance being ugly is also debatable, as we only get described what he looks like by people who are afraid and repulsed by him. Victor Frankenstein even says he build the creature out of the most beautiful parts he could find. Fascinatingly, people have different views on what he must’ve looked like based on their views on the book. I heavily emphasise with his feelings of loneliness and frustration, and therefore view him as just a really tall guy with weirdly coloured skin and scars all over. To me, he’s just another person who got dealt a shitty hand. But I also know people who do imagine him looking like a monster, because they view him AS a monster because of his actions later in the book.
      Idk I’ve always thought the interpretation of his appearance has been interesting.

      @softg0redraws745 2 роки тому +32

      Yeah, that is true. Especially since it's about as accurate as calling Victor by his last name. In the books especially the monster is basically born a baby in a hulking, adult body who can't speak and doesn't know much about the world around it. It's basically Victor's child, like you said and calling it Frankenstein would be like using it's last name, like how we do with Victor

      I think the problem with referring to the monster as “Frankenstein” is that it ruins the distinction and similarities between Victor himself and the monster, which is something I’d assume the book elaborates upon extensively.

Have you ever heard of a thing called a Defibrillator? You know, when you doctors bring you back from cardiac arrest (Which is basically death) using an electric shock?? The electric shock literally recharges your cardiovascular system and gets it pumping again. Your brain waves are electric charges. I think Frankenstein's Monster didn't have any bad intentions. Like with Maria he just wanted to be friends there was no way he knew that she would drown, he killed Fritz because he was bullying him, I don't know if why he killed that other dude but still. He's one of the nicer horror movie villains that didn't have any bad intentions.

      Though, I would agree that kill with Fritz was simply self-defense as he was getting harassed, the kill with the others were unnecessary, especially with the little girl(honestly, how can you not distinguish a flower from a little girl ;-;)

    The bit with the little girl and Frankenstein's monster is actually very similar to a scene in the Escape from Bizarro World story arch in Action Comics (Issues #855-857) when a black-and-white flashback shows Bizarro meeting a young girl throwing flowers off a balcony. He then throws the girl off the balcony similarly to how the monster in this movie throws the girl into the water.

    Love the daisies around your Frankie Monster on your shelf. And for years I imagined that edited shot - Maria Thrown Into the Water - in the most horrific way - and when I finally saw it I wondered what was the big deal.

    Technically the monster is kind of Victors son so calling it Frankenstein is accurate enough cuz it's the last name, I'll die on this hill 😂

    I love how James acknowledged that the monster never really had a name, people keep calling it Frankenstein but no one's calling it "Frankenstein's monster."

    Good video!!I have actually been to Frankenstein's Castle just outside Darmstadt, Germany in 1986. Back in them days the local US Army/Air Force units would dress it up for Halloween - was fun and interesting.
    Also, while growing up in 1960s-70s, I can remember seeing BOTH versions of the movie with the little girl being tossed into the water and not being tossed. Can remember the scene when the monster is playing with the little girl, then suddenly cutting to the father walking down the street with her in his arms, which (as a kid at the time) would always confuse me.

    'Now I know what it feels like to be God!'
    That line is frikkin' terrifying, from an existential perspective but also there are VERY few humans I know who would make good 'gods'...

    Hey man, I dont know if you still read comments on your old videos, especially videos this old, but I thought it would be cool if you did a Kill Count for Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Millers version of Frankenstein, which was recorded by the national theatre and is currently if fleetingly available on youtube. It is a far more tragic rendition with some phenomenal acting. I realise its not a movie, but rather a play, but it is still an incredible watch that I think you'll really enjoy.

    I have read the original book and it turns out where it ends with the Creature asks for a wife. Elizabeth was his adopted sister, and “Henry” was named Victor Frankenstein. The book is dark but lovely to read
