João Victor Abramides, It’s gets funnier when in the movie you hear on the radio that the military might be deployed to combat the bird attacks. While that is a good thing to do, I cannot help but laugh at the military trying to fight off birds.
Birds 2, what's a murder? Said with heavy 1930s gangster accent But for real, in vermont crows get large and fly off with small bags of trash from dumpsters
9:36 I think that the reason why this scene was silent was because this was an early horror movie. At the time of this release, Alfred Hitchcock was probably one of the few well-known directors who made horror/thriller movies. The average moviegoer wasn't used to seeing the image of a bloody corpse with it's eyes pecked out lying on the floor, and the shock was probably intense enough for most people. They didn't actually need scary sound effects of dramatic music to scare people with this kill.
I honestly think it was scarier without the music. It makes it feel real, if you walked into a room to find a dead body when you weren’t expecting one, there would not be music, you probably wouldn’t even scream, you’d just be shocked for a hot second. It makes the scene feel real.
I seriously need to watch this movie. I'm so in love with the fact that music wasn't really a thing in it. ESPECIALLY that they were able to do basically a jumpscare without it. So incredible
It’s awesome. Yes, it’s dated in ways (it’s nearly 60 years old though so that can’t really be held against it), but at its core it’s still a great movie with a unique plot and well-written characters. I saw it for the first time around 2009 when I was in high school, and I was still impressed by how well it held up. I’m actually kinda surprised it was allowed to be shown in school considering the scene of the man with his eyes pecked out. It’s pretty graphic.
While I understand being upset over Melony seemingly acting "weaker", nows a good time for a friendly reminder that strong female characters can still be strong and have moments of weakness. She'd been through so much at this point, it's understandable that she'd be in shock. Strong characters don't have to be strong all the time to be considered such.
Its a good tactic to scare the audience . Like Ripley finally being alone on the escape pod at the end of Alien (she was almost hyperventilating) the plot builds a character that seems unshakeable, and then finally shakes them at the climax. "The cool spunky lady is scared of the birds? Oh dang I better be scared of the birds too!"
Soooo happy for you guys. No really. Soooo happy. Loved this episode a lot. Great classy actors and beautiful appreciation of the old art of Cinema. Thanks James!
The Lone Wanderer Could be worse. I accidentally watched Jack (I think) Russell’s “The Devils” as a 7-year-old. It was the TV cut and not the X-rated version, but still.
Those cockatiels are so cute😊. Though I’m so sorry for the poor sound editor- I can only imagine. My brother owns a sun conure and trust me you can’t have a simple phone call without the bird interrupting. Edit-never mind they do interrupt. Man I miss the days I only babysat a cockatiel. They actually whistle and chirp instead of screaming like a toddler wanting ice cream.
I think you should give Tippi Hedren’s character arc a second chance. I understand what you’re saying about how the story took a strong willed woman and made her weak and frail. But put it in the context of the birds in the novel, which were really an allegory for the war planes that were flying overhead. What her character arc is showing is really the ravages of war. How war can beat down even the strongest person sometimes.
For me personally, it's the trope of the man taking over that bothers me. It takes away from the focus of her being worn down because the stakes around her don't change along with her (because when she gets weak, the man takes over so she remains protected even if she can't protect herself). It would've been far more impactful, in my opinion, if the birds killed Mitch and she left with the other two Brenners, a shell of the character she was in the beginning. With Mitch there, it's as if none of her breakdown matters since he can take care of everything.
@@thingthang2904 - Just because you're a Feminist doesn't mean that the misogyny you so desperately crave is everywhere you look. Also I'm not saying this because you're a woman, if you were a male Feminist it would still be a brain meltingly stupid observation.
@@goawayleavemealone2880 I'm not a woman and I'm not a feminist so there goes that. Every assumption you made (both about my character and my argument) is off. I never said Hitchcock didn't write female characters well. I didn't even say he wrote Melanie poorly. I never said Melanie is broken because of some man (nor do I believe it). I said that Mitch taking over and becoming a solution to Melanie's obstacles takes away from the impact that her breakdown has. Melanie gets weaker but the stakes hit a wall with Mitch there saving her. The trope doesn't bother me just because it's a trope. It bothers me because it becomes too convenient to the plot for my liking.
Yeah because this movie, for as good as it is, has a real problem of wasting time doing nothing with its concept, and then every now and then remembering that it’s called “The Birds” and so it should have birds. This movie doesn’t have nearly enough birds

When audiences left the U.K. premiere at the Odeon, Leicester Square, London, they were greeted by the sound of screeching and flapping birds from loudspeakers hidden in the trees to scare them further. I have to commend you for this video. You brought the entire movie back to life as well as placed it in the context of the times (with appropriate humor). My parents did not allow me to see this in the theatre. When I finally did get to see it, it was the scariest movie I had ever seen. But what I didn't realize until now was how intricate and inventive was the plot also. This is what movie making is all about. Unquestionably one of the greatest movies ever made, IMHO.
A shout out should be given to this film for its special effects, especially the gas station scene, which was fantastically dramatic and impressively shot.
"ooh, pretty. what are they?" "love birds" "i see. good luck miss daniels" "thank you" I love the level of courtesy back then rather than throwing unnecessary degrading shade and sass you see nowadays.
It isn't that people weren't rude and demeaning there's just a HUGE censorship on a lot of stuff in old movies by Will Hayes and what is now MPAA (but like it was different but I forgot it's name) at the time who was a bit of a stick in the ass.
Kiammyfy you are confusing the image of society people liked portrayed in movies back then, with the reality that people have never changed and that era had more crime than our current era. The only difference now is that every butthead has a platform to spew their hate and anger, when before they would mostly be limited to their immediate circle or political party.
James being wholesome with gares (i think that was the gray parakeet's name) and saying "birds are smart, yeah!" was soooo cute and wholesome even for a kill count! 5 stars

You know James I chalk those strange reactions from 11:07-11:22 to Alfred Hitchcock’s unique sense of humor because as a kid and even more so now it’s absolutely hilarious to see the kids react this way great video as always!!
This movie scared me so much when I was little lol My grandpa watched it the day before my 4th birthday party which happened to be at a park. It took my mom forever to get me out because there were birds everywhere
On an episode of Eli Roth’s history of horror they were talking about the birds and I think they talked about how Melanie’s arc was in a way a metaphor for women in the 60s to be housewives and not have any sort of development of sorts if you know what I mean. It’s super interesting and I loved this episode Happy 2019 James!
Yeah. I just realised that movie is stealing the concept of "killer birds. " And then ... You realise... It sounds utterly absurd and Terrifying, If...you bring the Eagles, Vultures and Condor's into the picture.
Melanie going to the Brenner home with the lovebirds in that boat and then stealthily placing them inside is just like watching someone trying to sneak a bomb into a building without being noticed. It's a great sequence.
Is nobody going to bring up the fact that Melanie pretty much started stalking someone in order to give him two animals because he poked some fun at her one time?
thats how things are in the old days. from the 30’s-90’s people would often stalk people non-stop to drop off something & barge into peoples homes. these days stalking leads to jail or death
@@senorbusyman Don't you hate it when you're walking behind someone because you're both headed in the same direction and he calls the police on you and now you're headed to jail?

I have to commend you for this video. You brought the entire movie back to life as well as placed it in the context of the times (with appropriate humor). My parents did not allow me to see this in the theatre. When I finally did get to see it, it was the scariest movie I had ever seen. But what I didn't realize until now was how intricate and inventive was the plot also. This is what movie making is all about. Unquestionably one of the greatest movies ever made, IMHO.
This movie came out in the 60s… are you well into your 80s?
Maybe you can do a kill count on Final Destination franchise too. Their deaths are ridiculous, but hilarious

The first Kill Count of 2019! So excited for this year of content. Keep it up James and crew
Terrance S I used to make kill counts, but I accidentally deleted my channel.
A shout out should be given to this film for its special effects, especially the gas station scene, which was fantastically dramatic and impressively shot.
"ooh, pretty. what are they?"
"love birds"
"i see. good luck miss daniels"
"thank you"
I love the level of courtesy back then rather than throwing unnecessary degrading shade and sass you see nowadays.
The “good luck miss Daniels” is sassy though, it’s just in her tone.
I'm an actual Miss Daniels 😮 srsly that's my surname

I love the way the actors speak in these old movies. So full of class and poise.

Melanie going to the Brenner home with the lovebirds in that boat and then stealthily placing them inside is just like watching someone trying to sneak a bomb into a building without being noticed. It's a great sequence.
11:19 The truest depiction of horror in this video comes in the form of James struggling to understand children who don't wanna leave school.
