In the book, that's the point - a mean kitty can't do too much, and seeing that Church isn't the way he should be is there to subliminally teach Ellie that, say it with me Judd and everyone, "sometimes dead is better". That said, Judd also admits that teaching Lou about the existence of the evil place was a bad idea, but maybe that's part of the influence of the evil place, and also the perverse human incentive to do bad things with good intentions, et cetera et cetera... It's a really good book, anyway.
it says in the book that you will explain it to yourself and twist it so that it doesnt seem bad what your doing and thats why judd told louis to bury ellies cat, he probably told himself that ellie will be incredibly sad without her cat or something like that

And I moved schools only two years ago.
Whoa dude, I was his neighbor too - except at his summer house on Kezar lake back in the late '90s and '00s. I remember when he got hit by the van - we'd drive that road several times a day and had gotten VERY used to seeing him take his daily walks. We'd see him at "The Wicked Good Store" where half the town went to get lunch at least a dozen times every summer. His wife was friendlier than he was, as a 'neighbor', but the Kings were very cool to have around - they bought up a bunch of land just to keep it from being developed. So yeah, sup Stephen King neighbor buddy xD
I remember my mom telling me about how my grandpa would watch all these old horror movies like the old Frankenstein and he wasn’t bothered (he still does through programs like Svengoolie), but to this day, Pet Semetery is the only horror movie that actually personally scared him.
Nadia Marie umm, the best actor in the film is gage. The new remake is making Ellie die instead because it’s that hard to find a good toddler actor. Idk how they found such a good actor for his age but he’s amazing.
This is considered one of King's most brutal books, and the inspiration actually came from when King and his family rented a cabin up in Maine next to a similarly 18 wheeler busy road. His daughter, Naomi, lost her beloved cat Smucky first. The youngest of the King children Owen, who would go on to write Sleeping Beauties, almost suffered the same fate as Gage if it weren't for King scooping him at the last minute. The event shook up King so much that he sat himself down and wrote down what would have happened if he didn't save his son on time. It got the seal of approval from his writer wife Tabitha and off it went to the publishing house.
I always liked to think that Jud's story about his dog was him lying about bringing his wife back, not wanting to admit he'd brought a human back, but also wanting to warn him of the dangers of the burial ground. That's just me.
@@cameronhardy2920 Not at all... Norma dies half way through the novel, after Judd recounts the story about Spot. The novel goes into a bit of backstory about them as well, such as Judd being a sex addict and going out of town to buy prostitutes and Norma cheated on him with all of his friends out of revenge (this is revealed right before Gage kills Judd) while the theory may be possible with the films it is definitely not a theory relating to the novel.
Jud Crandall: Is distracted by cat while about to look where he knows Gage is with some sort of weapon. Jud's superior peroneal retinaculum: aight imma head out
Bruh just the words “Achilles’ tendon” reminds me when in Greek mythology and the Trojan war when Achilles cuts out someone’s Achilles’ tendon , ties a rope to it and drags him on his chariot so I get squeamish just hearing the words so that scene pretty much kills me
My biggest gripe with this movie is how over the top it is with every horror aspect of the story. In the book, all the creepy things about the micmac cemetery are initially very subtle. Like Church for example, he doesn't come back as an evil angry zombie cat, instead he's just much more "calm" than the usual, like he doesn't react a lot about anything, and walks in a funny wiggling way. Louis even says that he seems normal, but there's just something off. Same thing with Judd's dog, he says that during the time he was alive after the first burial, he was just a bit different, like his mind was somewhere else, or something.
@@severablegibbon Oh Lord don't even talk about that. There's some animals I'd mourn more than people. Like my current dog doodle. That will crush me but if my crackhead aunt dies I'm throwing a party. Animals bring me immense joy but people not so much.
Louis's death at the end was from his own idiocity. He easily could've avoided that by just not bringing her back, he'd seen the effects when bringing a human back already. EDIT: Since this comment seems to still be getting seen and replied to, I would like to state that this is no longer my stance. I am autistic and, at the time of making this comment, struggled with understanding emotions. I've managed to get better at it and do now see why he would act in the way he did.
I think that was his way of killing himself not being able to cope with grief after loosing his child and his wife, so he decides to spend one last time with his wife
but the way grief affects you makes you so desperate to see the person you love again that if you’re given an opportunity to bring them back, you’d probably do it, and tell yourself it’ll be different this time
The burial ground has an effect on you that pulls you back to it, it rationalizes every reason it can for you to go back to it. That’s why Jud told him about it even though he knew the effects it had, and that’s why he buries his wife
@@jenhpp it’s not the burial ground that does that. it’s grief and our inability to accept the finality of death. the reason pet sematary is so scary is because of the real life aspects of the story.
The saddest part is realizing the girl now has to deal with the death of her whole family in one week. Plus she had dreams that they would. She foresaw each and every death of her family and saw her brother die in front of her.
I remember reading Pet Sematary in middle school. I was sitting in the cafeteria during lunch when I got to Gage's death. Had to put the book down and hold back tears in the middle of the lunchroom from how sad and terrifying that part was. I can easily imagine books in my head, which is fun most of the time. But reading about a toddler getting flattened by a semi? Not so fun.
My mom figured out what was going to happen and tried to abandon the book. My dad made her finish it; they had been waiting for ages to get it from the library. I was a kid when the movie was in theaters. I “needed” a potty break and, by golly, I missed Gage getting hit. 😥
The undead little boy in this movie is hands down one of the most unsettling horror movie killers I can remember. Especially when he's accepting he lost and is just almost casually walking away saying "No fair. No fair." Just evil. Very effective.
That's exactly what the story is about how our hearts can't accept grief and loss of a child or a loved one to the point where we think we can bargain with existence itself at any cost, which is wrong hence the title - sometimes dead is better. PS Stephen King actually rented a house near a Maine university when his kids were infants next to a road with heavy traffic that had killed off so many pets, and there was a fucking real pet sematary in the woods, AND his kid almost ran out in the road !! It's in the foreword of the book it could have happened to King himself which is why he think it is his most tragic book ever.
Horror movie trope starter pack: •Moving to a new house, mostly because of a new job opportunity •The house/town is haunted/cursed/creepy •One or both parents are dead/die, or are just useless/pointless • Little children/teenagers •Ancient Indian burial ground •House/Building burning down •Freeze when something comes at you or make bad choices
Gage’s death made me cry, I’m actually glad they changed it to Ellie instead of Gage in the 2019 version...sorry, I didn’t want to see a baby die again
@@spencermcbride3881 Ohhh... Interesting. I've always wanted to see something come back and not be suddenly evil for no reason. I got pretty excited because it looked like they were going to go that route in the remake last year, but... then they changed their mind 2 minutes after the girl came back and they just didn't. Really a letdown.
I really wanted to see the bull, as well as wanting to know how they brought that giant 1000lb bull over the dead fall and all the way to burial ground and dug a grave large enough to bury him. Also mad about Jud's dog being mean.
Karia_Winchester the book leaves how they got the bull to the burial ground ambiguous because Jud says something along the lines of “what the Sematary wants, the Sematary gets”. Like how Louis can only climb the deadfall when under its control, but normally it is too steep
The German name of the movie is 'Friedhof der Kuscheltiere', which would translate to 'Cemetery of the cuddly toys' ... So as a kid I thought this was a movie about thrown away toys coming to life and attacking the ones who threw them away xD
@@RequiemPoete IKR!?!? Seriously his dialogue on the phone "I played with Mommy now I want to play with you...." is SERIOUSLY MESSED UP. Bravo, Stephen King. Bravo.
@@mitchellneu I mean he captures the desperation any parent would naturally have in that situation. And the denial that "maybe my son will be different." Few things tugged at my heart more than the little demon shitling yelling 'no fair...' and I didn't even think it was his son in that thing.
I haven't seen this for many years and I don't think I ever fully appreciated just how good that kid who plays Gage's acting is. He's able to play cute and creepy with equal ease. Like I legit feel sorry for Gage when he gets injected with the needle even though he is a member of the previously but no longer exactly dead but not quite alive either guild. They're thinking of a shorter name. What about when he stumbles? That's such good physical acting from a literal toddler. Does he even understand such concepts as a 3 year old? What about biting poor Jud in the throat? Does he know what that means? I can't stop thinking about these things. It's like Linda Blair in The Exorcist. How does that not mess her up royally?
It takes so much to make me think a child is cute (I don't like children pls don't ask) but lil' Gage actually tugged at my heartstrings, especially when he died. His little "no fair :(" as well as the music?? 2 hit fuckin' combo right there
When I was growing up we had a cat named furby who looked just like this cat. He would even get in fights (as a Tom cat that isn't fixed that's normal) and would have big open wounds and even part of his ear torn off so that made him look even more like a zombie cat. Unlike most tom cats he died of old age and at home where most cats just disappear to die. He was a special cat and my sister's first pet.
Ivany 299 Nah but he did spook me while right after I was done watching this a few weeks ago. I go down to get some coffee and he’s just standing there.
Striker 8 I mean all the resurrections happen in the pet semetary obviously U can inference some kids started it up and stuff, but like thats what the hainted area is names the whole movie revolves around it
Zelda is the scariest character I've ever seen, and Jud's death was the most gruesome I've ever seen. This movie will always stick with me...imagine if it had better acting???
Zelda is the reason my mom refuses to watch this movie again lol. She saw it once after it came out and never again. She only read the book twice after watching the movie.
19:12-19:17 OH. MY. GOD. I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT SCENE IN 7 YEARS. My brother and I were flipping through channels trying to find something to watch and my brother put the channel to this movie. And he stopped at this scene right here (I remember I thought the kid was a doll. And we didn't know what movie this was so yeah). Ever since then I was afraid of standing next to any bed and I had night terrors about that scene. 7 years later and I now know where that scene came from.
*When your cat looks awfully similar to the cat in the movie* OOF! My most liked comment yet! Didn't think so many people watching this video have a Russian Blue cat 😂
He changes the rules depending on the series. He counted the existence of a zombie as a kill in the rec series. He didn't to that here or in zombieland
IS it just me or is Rachel's zombie makeup AMAZING! Like that gushing exposed eye socket looks SO REAL, it really looks like an exposed bone under her skin layer! Are there any behind the scenes about it!? Why does no one really talk about this?
I'll give this film credit for having the balls to kill a fricking baby! It found a way to beat A Quiet Place, Halloween 3 and Silent Night for doing that. 13:23, you're right about that!
I live in Maine. And I got to say, I am fed up with all the people burying their dead pets in my backyard thinking it’s gonna bring them back to life! And I live in an apartment complex!
Gage’s death made me cry, I’m actually glad they changed it to Ellie instead of Gage in the 2019 version...sorry, I didn’t want to see a baby die again
Did they really change it? Huh. I read the book a couple years ago and I found it incredibly sad, but I also think it's better if Gage dies because it adds a different tune to it. Again I hate babies dying but it works better for the story.

His wife was friendlier than he was, as a 'neighbor', but the Kings were very cool to have around - they bought up a bunch of land just to keep it from being developed.

Man, that's some heavy shit
He almost destroyed it he was so worried that he had gone too far. Tabitha convinced him that it was too good not to publish. She was right.
@@starkman78 Tabby was also the one who dug the first few pages of "Carrie" out of the trash all those years ago when Stephen thought it was a mess.
Must be nice to have a writer wife who knows a publisher. -_-
He only published it because of a deal with a publishing company he had before he could switch to a different publishing company

I always liked to think that Jud's story about his dog was him lying about bringing his wife back, not wanting to admit he'd brought a human back, but also wanting to warn him of the dangers of the burial ground. That's just me.
i’m pretty sure there’s actually a theory that related to the book about this actually

It kinda bummed me out when jud died, since hes like a nice old granpa to the family

I swear, Gage is like one of the most adorable kids I’ve ever seen. Weird to think that he went on to play Aaron in full house
They scored with the casting. Miko Hughes was old enough to have some acting skill, but he was so teeny tiny that he could believably play a toddler.

He was a damn good actor! (Especially better than his dad's actor.)

The baby was the best actor in this movie by far. His little sad face and “no fair” were adorable. Give that baby an award.

Or him saying " I want to play with you"
That baby is my favorite character, hes so cute the lil murder baby
That's exactly what the story is about how our hearts can't accept grief and loss of a child or a loved one to the point where we think we can bargain with existence itself at any cost, which is wrong hence the title - sometimes dead is better.
PS Stephen King actually rented a house near a Maine university when his kids were infants next to a road with heavy traffic that had killed off so many pets, and there was a fucking real pet sematary in the woods, AND his kid almost ran out in the road !! It's in the foreword of the book it could have happened to King himself which is why he think it is his most tragic book ever.
