Yeah
Funnily enough, I think a lot of people my age got exposed to the idea of Blacula through The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, which portrayed Dracula as an elderly black man (although more inspired by Redd Fox)
Grim: Why do you insist we watch this stupid thing?
Billy: Am I the only one who understands the complexity of this cinematically ambitious masterpiece? This movie isn't stupid! You're stupid!
Grim: (crying) Oh Billy why, You shouldn’t have said that
Yup that's where I first heard of him, I thought he was an invention of the show at the time lol

“Dracula don’t suck blood, Dracula scrape and lick!”
Dracula; Now Dracula going to separate y'all from ugly to dummy. You ugly you ugly you ugly you a dummy.
"we don't want to deal with slavery"
"we didn't want to either, but we had to"
lmaooo what a legend
Because slavery in America existed in the 70s. My eyes have rolled so hard that I can probably create two halves of a snowman with them.
@@codynoth4183 Wow so true. Black people definitely haven't had to deal with the after effects of slavery for 200 years!
*ignores systemic racism, redlining, and generational wealth disparities*
@@nlamaa America is the only country that has done anything to try and mitigate what it's done in the past. Slavery existed far before America seemingly "invented it" and if you think wealth is a "white person privilege" you're just as racist as anyone you claim to be.
Actions speak louder than words and black communities have been regressing more and more in the last 20 years than anything "slavery" could have done.
@@codynoth4183 ?
@@codynoth4183 Nothing in that statement implied slavery to be taking place currently (in the 70s). Moron.
Choosing to have him willingly walk into the sun when he's lost Luna/Tina again for good is a beautiful choice. He dies as a heartbroken man in love, not the monster they made him. Enormous praise for William Marshall as one of the best Dracula to ever grace the screen!
This makes me cry every time I see it. He's got nothing left to live for...
EDIT: or Unlive for... 🤣
He kills innocent people, so yes, he was a monster.
Really appreciate the comment on how Blacula's poise appealed to white audiences. As a Black woman I've been told so many times how "well spoken" I am, like how does one take that.
That’s always such a back handed and micro aggressive comment bc they never tell white people how “well spoken they are.”
You take it as if black people don't speak well and you do. Instead of getting offended when you're told that, maybe get upset that your people sometimes speak like they've never read a book before.
@@DavidKen878 nice job making a micro aggression into a full on one.
@@user-ht5ce2it3z It's not a microagression if it's true.
@@DavidKen878 no it’s not your simply just racist, and you either don’t wanna acknowledge it or your proud of it
I love that they have a genuine reason for the name Blacula. This movie shocks some people when they realize that it actually takes itself seriously and it's not some silly parody.
People mention this move as being black sensationalism when in reality it uses it as clickbait to get people interested and actually shows an interesting story. Both Blacula and the main character guy were black but they were both pretty cool and badass. The movie had a bunch of other stereotypes but I think it really tried to play it serious
Dude it's a legit movie that did so much to add dignity and real stuff. He's like Denzel. It's absolutely a masterpiece
Honestly how I came across it but genuinely enjoyed it
I will always prefer kill counts for more obscure cult films than the latest boring remake of an established franchise. Glad that you’re giving Blacula some recognition, truly one of the defining blaxploitation films.
So true, I remember when James did sleep away camp and that's when I realized how awesome those obscure kill counts are over the usual Halloween remake or whatever
Black-exploitation..... I disagree, all races use violence and drugs, even depicted in many movies.
White-exploitation.... next time i watch taxi driver and godfather, fuck it, even fight club lol. Even that term i disagree with.
Movies are art.
Whole point is, regardless of views, black cast...
So i don't see how that's anything other than empowering lol.
Edit: Also an honor to have an amazing character such as Dracula being played by a black man.
If anything if racists were evolved, they'd have a problem giving such a kick ass concept to someone of that background.
I mean, i'm not buying that it was made as a movie to put down black people. Beyond crazy for anyone to think that.
No way people were more woke and PC back in 1972 compared to now. Black exploitation, pfffft.
@@Prof.Pwnalot The fact you make a comparison of blaxploitation and "white-exploitation" at all is foolish. You very obviously don't understand the subtly of racism and how systemic racism works. You're a troll, but you must be educated regardless.
"So I don't see how that's anything other than empowering lol." Would you say the same about forced bondage then? Consisting of ONLY black people? Is slavery empowering?
Blaxploitation films are often riddled with stereotypes and harmful misconceptions. They were made to appeal to specific audiences in mind and made with low budgets to make a quick profit. The problem is not that black people are in a movie, as you claim it to be. The problem was that they were in this KIND of movie, cheap, without care. This was released in 72, but all throughout the 70s we have movies such as Alien, A clockwork orange, Star wars.. Where's all the black characters in those movies? They weren't getting hired for them.
Your bait is not intriguing nor in the littlest sense funny. The sadder part is no one took it, so now you're left with only this to read. Go back to the 4chan forum from whence you came.
@@memesarekeem Imagine somebody unironically crapping on 4chan as if it wasn't the last bastion of free speech on the internet and didn't deserve heaps of praise for that element alone. Many would say that you ought to go back to Reddit whence you came.

I really like your explanation of the blacksploitation genre. People are usually quick to point to its negatives and not many people talk about its actual positives
Feel like it’s worth mentioning that when the funeral home owner mentions that the other part of the gay couple was white, and then he doesn’t get many white folks in his funeral home, that was actually a bit of a commentary on segregation in funeral homes, which is something that still happens to this day.
It does!? Wtf thats pretty insane.

The scene where the vampire cabbie runs in slow motion towards her victim really traumatized me as a kid. My mom was truly pissed at my dad for taking me and my brother to see this movie...LOL! I was only 7 yrs old back in '72. It's really cool that James covered this truly underrated film!
My dad and uncle felt the exact same way when they saw the film in theaters too lol
Me as well. That scene is really scary.
One of the scariest scenes in horror. Chills 😳
I love the fact that Mamuwalde, Dracula, Gordon, and Sam are all played by recognizable Star Trek guest stars.
Now if only skillet joined in
The fact that James had to say that movies have been speaking about social issues forever is insane. He should not have had to say that but then again internet.
The culture war has made movie discussions more stupid.
I think it depends what he's referring to when he says that. Alot of movies and shows nowadays don't approach social/political issues with grace, but instead shove them down your throat or present them in a negative, counter-productive way, (offering no real solutions or examples of how to be, but instead yelling at the people, usually in the form of a blanket statement, that they suck). If any criticism for modern movies/shows is dismissed because "shows and movies have always had politics in them," then it kind of misses the point of the criticism in the first place. Approaching these issues as black and white, metaphorically-speaking, is a bad thing to do, and shoving messages down the throat of the audience without nuance, or by interrupting the story, is a bad way to approach those topics.
There are definitely some who are against any social issues being presented whatsoever. If those are the people who James is referring to, then I agree with that.

Same with this white kid. I loved this movie. I thought it was really scary and well done. Same with New York. You probably remember Chiller Theater with the 6 fingered hand. I grew up in New Jersey and we got all the NY stations.
I love it when no-budget films like this and Basket Case are more honest about showing what their respective cities looked like back in the time the film was made. It’s like we’re witnessing the unveiling of a time capsule that was buried behind the romanticised interpretations of said cities

@@DeadMeat how do you determine which ones to kill count?
@@sebsignat8286 he aint gonna reply
You’d be shocked
@@sebsignat8286 Sebs, from all my James and Chelsea (Dead Meat creators and main stars through this channel and their other forms of entertainment, ie podcast, etc) listening and watching, I'm fairly certain they pick films based on two things: Input by fans through emails/comments and James' own desire to do certain films, like this one in Blacula. He's done kill counts based solely on fans outpouring and constant badgering for certain films and other times he's done films based only on what he likes. It's just a mish-mash of all these things combined. I personally love it as we get great historical lessons like Blacula, but also the main franchises as well. It really helps to keep things fresh.
edit - to add also that James has talked about how he sometimes struggles doing the long running franchises that never were that popular (like Leprechaun franchise,) because they don't bring in a lot of views, which hurts the channel. He still does them, but I'm sure there's a strategy behind when to release Kill Counts that he knows might not get the most clicks. There has to be major consideration within the Dead Meat team about this as well.
Funky Presentation, My Man! Seriously, you paid great respect to this piece, and I appreciated your time and energy. Blacula is a fun movie, and a good time's guaranteed. Your threads look pretty sweet and your dance moves, well, they were dance moves. I enjoyed another great kill count. Thank you!

JAMES, I've been a fan since your first year. Thank you always for your treatment of this movie, Bones, and Def by Temptation. It's awesome that you recognize them as "just another fun movie with cool kills" as well as acknowledge them to be influenced by the experiences of the people and subject to the injustices of the industry. I love to see someone outside our demographic value it as "normal"/regular culture (because it is!) without erasing it's importance or impact. And you bring them back with a younger audience. Serious, dude, to you and your whole team (Chelsea has picked some good ones, too) good work.

Any time we try to recognize something like this as "normal/regular culture" we're called racist because "YOU TOTALLY DON'T GET THE IMPORTANCE OR IMPACT THIS HAD FOR BLACK PEOPLE YOU RACIST!"

I used to think this movie was wild as a child, as an adult, I have so much respect for it. We've been fighting to be seen and included for a long time (still are) and the fact that they did this and did so seriously is amazing when you think about it. They mixed social messaging with reality and entertainment. Hopefully more folks will know about this movie after being covered on the channel!
I respect what you're trying to say, however I disagree. In a world where hip hop is the most dominant music genre, and black lives matter riots seem to rule the country, I wholeheartedly disagree that blacks are "still fighting to be included". Maybe that comes from the fact that I live and breathe hip hop. Hip hop is my culture, and there's thousands of rappers telling their stories to a mainstream audience. As well as the very casual racism thrown at whites in rap culture, id say blacks have undeniably left an incredible mark on the world that will last for centuries

I was honored to work with William Crain on an early screenplay for "The Fighting 99th" and to meet William Marshall at a Famous Monster's horror convention held at Universal Studios where Michael and Janet Jackson were shooting "Scream!" Good times.
It’s great to see you covering older movies on the Kill Count. “Scream Blacula Scream” was an excellent sequel too!! For more early 70’s vampire movies, try “Count Yorga Vampire” and “The Return of Count Yorga”.
Edited to add: I’m glad I’m not the only one who laughed out loud when Blacula threw the garbage can at that cop ha ha.
Just want to give James and crew props for venturing outside your comfort zone in terms of cinematic eras. I know you’ve expressed trepidation about covering areas like international film, but the Kill Counts for this and Dracula have such great historical footnotes and should give you confidence to branch out (wherever you desire). I know modern American movies are likely always going to drive more views, but for whatever it’s worth, I love the content related to vintage and obscure films and a lot of us appreciate the work you put into that research. It doesn’t go unnoticed.
William Marshall had one of the coolest voices ever.
The first time I saw William Marshall perform was as Dr. Daystrom on TOS Star Trek. He was brilliant, very talented actor and he is awesome in this film as well.

As someone who is somewhat hearing impaired, I appreciate the humor in the music descriptions. Please please please keep doing them.
The "who scored the kills" breakdown is probably my favorite 'extra statistic' during The Numbers since you started introducing them. I understand it's not always useful in movies where almost all of the kills are the work of one character (such as slashers), or comparing films to earlier entries in their franchise (... again, like slashers). But I would love to see you use it again when it fits.
