This movie has one of my favorite first kills. It's mid day and the sun is shining, Kirk makes an all too real small stumble and runs directly into the killer. It doesn't just cut away after one blow, we see him get brutally beaten down and then that metal door slides shut. It's so removed from modern jump scare kills and it still strikes a nerve to this day.
The terrifying thing about that scene was the way he starts convulsing before being dragged off and that door closing. Horrific! One of the scariest death scenes of all time
The shot where leather face grabs pam like a toddler and her arms and legs are just flailing in the air is so iconic and terrifying. Like imagine being picked up by a giant psychopath like a child and being dragged to your doom with no escape apparently in reach. *chills*
I love Leatherface’s first appearance. There’s no buildup to a “monster,” no tension, no suspenseful music. It just happens. Which in its own beautiful way, makes frightening.
no music build up, nothing really to indicate these kids were about to become BBQ, even Leatherfaces reveal there was nothing but silence and what you think is a pig squealing that actually turned out to be Leatherface himself, still chills my bones
I really love that. The first kill is so sudden and shocking: easily worth the long wait. They took a similar approach to Franklin's death, which may well be the greatest jump-scare of all time.

I’m a psychosis patient. Someone who deals with hallucinations and delusions on a daily basis. Though some are as simple as hearing a knock on the door, some can cause me to spiral out of control, with manic mood swings, paranoia and sleep deprivation. This however never causes me to cause harm to someone else, and I used to implode instead of explode. I’m glad you spoke about the idea that mental health suffering humans are more likely to implode and be a victim, rather than explode as a perpetrator. It’s something pretty rare in films. If someone saw my symptoms on paper, they’d probably be at least a little afraid to be left alone with me due to the media representation, even though I’m not a danger to others and have never been deemed as such.
Fun fact: did you know that the creators of the movie actually hid leather face from the cast to get a real reaction out of them, which means it was the first time any of the cast seen him. Edit: If you watch their faces they are genuinely terrified.
Potterhead731 It apparently cracked up Leatherface’s actor too bc after Jerry genuinely let out that scream, his actor had to take a break for like 15 minutes bc he was laughing so hard
It's like how the cast of Scream weren't allowed to meet Roger L Jackson who did the Ghostface voice so they'd have more realistic scared reactions to the phone calls.
One of the reasons I love this channel is because of moments like at 5:59. James is such a diehard horror fan but so often takes the time to step back and acknowledge times when the genre splits from real life in ways that might be problematic or reinforce harmful conventions.
Fun fact: The scene where Leatherface cuts Sally's finger is 100% real as they couldn't get the fake blood to work and many other actors described working on the film as an absolute nightmare.
I mean, I can imagine. Filming in Texas summer, getting injuries because of low budget, with some people method acting absolute crazies and bastards. Doesn't seem like a great time lmao.
I love how he says, people with such disabilities are rather victims. that is so true. It is so nice to see that with his joking around James is actually a smart and down to earth person. he deserves more credit.
Well it’s the point of the whole franchise, showing how mentally challenged Leatherface was forced to kill people. He never saw anything wrong about it because that’s how his brothers and grandpa raised him.
@@ightjai because my friend was going to his appointment to get shots and he came back and said there was a van outside a house with three detectives and caution tape that all he told me
For those who are good at math/science and estimation. Analyze the hammer kills on the basis of estimated force, impulse, momentum, and impact parameter. I tried several attempts but all my values have been wrong. I estimated the hammer weighed 2.6 kg. I think my final velocity for the hammer and my estimating how much torque Leatherface applies to the hammers is what is preventing me from getting any part of the problem correct.
The chainsaw is more of a concept. How could we know they didn't kill more people with a chainsaw? I also like to believe that leatherface rarely used it to kill people(unless he was in full panic mode) and usually just used it to dispose of the bodies easier.
I want them to make a film about the truck driver where he’s just going about his business for an hour and fifteen minutes and in the last fifteen minutes it’s just the end of this film.
Let’s be honest, that trucker was the only character worth rooting for in this film, how many people get to say they whacked some chainsaw wielding maniac upside the head with a wrench
9:51 fun fact, Robert Burns is also a famous Scottish Poet and made very popular poems including “Auld Lang Syne” that is sang on New Years around the world. He is celebrated by eating Haggis on the 25 of January (his birthday) and sing some of his poems to remember the legend he was
Mentally that's what Leatherface is. He gets scared when Sally's friends keep coming into the Sawyer house like a kid would if a stranger walked into their house.
@@Xehanort10 I think Leatherface is the only real not evil slasher like he's basically a scared child trying to do his best for his older brothers (one who has been shown to hit and yell at him) and to make them proud of him. He's just probably really confused and if he was taken away and given the proper treatment he could be a harmless person.
i remember watching this movie for the very first time and the dinner scene felt like it lasted over an hour. i wasn’t scared at all watching this movie, but i couldn’t sit still when i was watching it. the suspense and unsettling nature made me think about it for days. fantastic movie
I decided to watch this because I’ve been OBSESSED with the Texas Chainsaw game. I’m honestly impressed with how much this movie influenced the game. Like literally THIS movie. Lmao.
Oh yeah it’s because the creators of that game only have the rights to this movie specifically, hopefully soon they’ll get more rights and more stuff can be added to the game
Fun Fact: Gunner Hanson who played Leatherface created the dance himself. The original ending was suppose to have him stomp his feet but when the filming was coming to and end, he swung the chainsaw around for fun and even Tobe Hooper liked that idea of him swinging it. So he let him do it in the final scene.
Fun fact: almost every comment is a fun fact and him and I are sick of it, it's a fun fact I admit, but make it different next time and just don't say the words fun fact, it's not that hard
This is without a doubt my favorite horror film. I absolutely adore the camera work, the creepiness, how the reveal for Leatherface was done, the snapshots in the beginning, just literally everything
I didn't think Franklin was annoying though and had a justified reaction. If the other characters were whinier they would've left. I would whine too if I got my arm sliced when I said don't let that guy in the van, my friends abandoned me, no one listened to me or trust my advice, etc. He probably would've survived more than Sally if he wasn't in a wheelchair since he knew something was off.
I love Sally Hardesty I legitimately just said I sympathize too easily and I said “I’ve” ever heard. Also how the hell do you like this channel with that name and profile pic. And another thing! You’re just wrong!
You do not need gore to make horror, this is still one of the most insane and brutal horror movies ever made. The whole experience left me feeling pretty crazy afterwards. Never will it ever be duplicated.
@@mikaeel_m3243I thought it was unsettling more than scary. I put myself in peoples shoes a lot so being in their spot wouldn’t be something I’d long for. I think the TCM game really shows what they go through.
That scene with Pam is absolutely horrifying. As if being impaled by a meathook isn't bad enough, she gets to watch Leatherface carve up her boyfriend with a chainsaw, and sees exactly whats going to happen to her. Shit gives me shivers every time 😖
@@Joeyk354 That was my First thought too, the first time I saw this I thought: "Hey this just like dbd, a Leatherface get's a first hook and than just proxycamps..."
I’m glad I finally learned more about Leather face through this video, I kinda like how he is not as evil as most iconic killers, makes him feel like he is treated more as a tool rather than an individual
God, James voicing Leatherface as just being real tired of these kids breaking into his house kills me, I love scary horror people acting like normal people. It's the same energy as Pennywise from the newer IT adaption being out of character but in full costume
The scene where Pam was caught by the Leatherface and got hooked like an animal in my opinion was one of the scariest scenes in a horror movie, it's so memorable and definitely a classic. Imagine trying to run for your life but then helplessly got picked up from the back and hanged by a hook. That's why this movie definitely one of my most favorites!!
Rhys Hamilton the actor Gunnar Hansen was actually pretty fast. For the chase scene in the dark, he had to slow himself down because he would catch up to her too easily
you're right it totally conveys the feeling of despair like getting hooked and killed yourself. Proof you don't need special effects and a big budget to make scary movies
It's weird how the final scene has become known as "the dinner scene", when it's never said in the movie that it's dinner. Given the time of day when Sally leaves the house, it's more likely it's breakfast.
Kirk's (the first) death is so memorable for me, because it just feels so real. There's no flourish to it or extra gore, just the thud of the hammer that sounds so realistic.
It was the death rattle that got me. Had a short phase where I'd venture to liveleak or read morbid stuff on the internet and the things bodies still do after death is horrifying. Especially if it is sudden.
As someone who advocates strongly (and has done full scale projects in my community) against the stigma of mental illnesses I sincerely appreciate the reminder you gave about people with illnesses or disorders. More often than not stigma harms those with illnesses and it leads to assumptions that anyone with a disorder or illness is violent. Just as James said, they are more often victims than perpetrator. Thank you for saying that! I know you won't see this but I love to see people reminding others not to stigmatize.
"they are more often victims than the perpetrator." Yet schizophrenics are still more likely to be violent. I hate these sort of phrases that try to change contexts.
@@rexviperfan not true While there have been recorded cases of schizophrenics being violent, I personally know some schizophrenics and have done extensive research on this subject. I know that doesn't mean much on the Internet, however the fact remains that schizophrenics are heavily stigmatized of being violent. Perhaps unmedicated and untreated, they *can* be violent, but in normal circumstances they often are not. I get what you're saying, but feeding into the stigma that they are prone to violence is just as bad.
@@commanderweebsterz ; We are talking about unmedicated schizophrenics (or other psychosis), specifically when they are in a manic or psychotic state. They can be unpredictable and aggressive when they are unmedicated, but return to normalcy when they get meds. There are obviously many cases of this happening, I even know of/are related to several who were extremely violent for years when they were off meds. These obviously don't make the significant portion of those with psychosis, but the portion that do can be *terrifying*, so it makes sense to use them as a model for horror movie villains. Anyways, my point really is that I don't like when truth/reality is buried by presenting 'alternative contexts'. It's like, two things can be true and not contradict each other, but to present one to discredit the other, it just doesn't sit well with me at all.
In one of the conventions James went to recently, he met the semi truck actor himself and he said that his character ran to the sheriff who was working with the Sawyers and as he said "They told me to either join the club or get in the pot and I chose to join the club". He even played 1 of the chili judges in TCM2, the one holding the triangle the lady rings before announcing Drayton as the winner, so he was a ringer for them to win the contest lmao. Crazy to know all that 40+ years after the fact
Good on James for stressing the disconnect between portrayals of mentally unwell people as villains in horror movies and their more prevalent victimisation irl (in fact, not only are the mentally ill more likely to be victims of violent crimes than perpetrators, they’re also more likely to be the victim of a violent crime than neurotypicals). It’s by spreading awareness and remaining conscious of this fact that we can allow these films to remain entertaining, without letting them create implications that seep into real life. It may be a small thing but it’s great to see from such a hardcore horror fan.
The funny thing is a whole lot of mentally ill and disabled people absolutely love Leatherface. He's relatable in how he's abused by his family and he's cool and intimidating and uses a chainsaw as a weapon. I have seen multiple pieces of fanart of him wearing an autistic pride pin.
As amazing as these films are, I really do find them heartbreaking to watch. I’m usually not disturbed by horror movies, but seeing someone with a severe mental disability taken advantage of and abused really gets to me. It’s evident he doesn’t even know right from wrong; I don’t see him as the villain, but rather his family. Not a huge fan of Texas Chainsaw 3D, but the ending was pretty satisfying.
I know this comment is old now but if you see this you may enjoy this: me and my dad happened to watch this right after watching the satirical Tucker and Dale VS Evil, which portrays that the stereotypical hillbilly serial killers are actually just innocent dudes getting into accidents and are very nice dudes. So when we watched this we were LAUGHING our asses off cuz with that frame of mind, we were like “this movie is about a mentally challenged man with an artistic hobby removing home invaders!”
@@lateforthesky151 it’s very good! And the timing of watching it just before watching a movie where every victim is breaking and entering this dudes house could not have been more fitting!
Leatherface is a pure villian. An absolute monster..a no mercy killing machine who clearly takes pleasure in torture and murder. He treats his human victims like cattle. With all that being said. His brothers are despicable. Nubbins loves dead things, carcasses and he loves slicing his victims so they slowly die. Cook is a paranoid schizophrenic psychopath. Mental illness runs RAMPANT within the Sawyer clan. But not just mentall illness. Psychopathy, necrophilia, cannibalism, murder etc. Imo the only Horror family that rivals the Sawyers and may be even worse are the Firefly's. Both despicable but to me Firefly's are even more evil. Cause there's not much sign of mental illness within the firefly's. Just pure evil.
What I've noticed is that some of the most infamous and influential slasher horror movies don't actually have that many kills or gore at all. It's just pure atmosphere and suspense. I love it.
I feel like having more kills just means more characters and more characters just means less time to spend on any of them. So they just feel like boring idiot meat sacks, which makes for a cheaper or more forgettable film.
@@sexuallyactivetoyotaprius3454 it can still be a redeeming quality to have cool kills and gore in a horror or thriller movie especially slashers & body horror films
Slashers were all about the suspense and build up more then body counts, at least until Friday the 13th came along and made it a murder fest with tons of onscreen blood and gore. Just about every slasher movie in the 80s followed this formula, even the sequels to movies that inspired Friday the 13th such as Texas Chainsaw, and Halloween.
I've always found it hilarious that three people walk into a random house for no good reason and Leatherface is just kinda defending his home... Although the chasing out the door and brutalisation probably doesn't count towards the defending...
When I watch this movie I take it as a “don’t ever trust ppl and don’t ever intrude” 😂 you might get lucky and find what you’re looking for but you might piss off a leatherface as well lmao 🤷🏽
From Leatherface's point of view killing Kirk and Jerry was probably self defence but impaling Pam on the meat hook, forcing her to watch him chop up Kirk's body, sticking her in the freezer and killing Franklin when he heard him and Sally shouting for Jerry obviously wasn't. Earlier in the film Drayton tried to warn them because he knew his house was near Sally and Franklin's granddad's house. "You don't wanna go messing around no old house. You don't wanna go messing around other folks property. If some folks don't like it they don't mind showing ya." Basically "Don't go near my house or my little brother Bubba will make you wish you hadn't."
What kind of response is this? I think it’s visceral and horrifying. It would definitely make a plethora of different people have “nightmares” regardless of the release date. Jeez.
You can see the total despair and desperation on her part, specially when she was driven to the point of offering herself to the Sawyers. Too bad(and perhaps good too since it shows that the Sawyers are not perverts) that the trio brothers has no interest and all they want is to play with their meal before killing it.
To explain why the truck driver may have jumped out of the truck instead of driving away, I would say he probably thought Leatherface could either break in or chainsaw though the door faster than he could start the truck/ drive away.
It was probably more based on reality. The driver probably didn't take off out of there because he couldn't due to the braking system on that truck at the time and such a hard stop. The brakes wouldn't release, so he couldn't floor it.
Ed Vazquez and if you pay attention to the camera movement during the final shots of the film, it’s because Gunnar Hanson was waving the chainsaw too close to the camera & Tobe Hooper was dodging the heavy instrument

It was the death rattle that got me. Had a short phase where I'd venture to liveleak or read morbid stuff on the internet and the things bodies still do after death is horrifying. Especially if it is sudden.
Fun Fact: That's actually a brutality in Mortal Kombat X.
@@rexviperfan not true
While there have been recorded cases of schizophrenics being violent, I personally know some schizophrenics and have done extensive research on this subject.
Idk why but I just hope the truck driver survived just because he seemed so innocent and didn’t need to get involved with that madness
In one of the conventions James went to recently, he met the semi truck actor himself and he said that his character ran to the sheriff who was working with the Sawyers and as he said "They told me to either join the club or get in the pot and I chose to join the club".

If some folks don't like it they don't mind showing ya." Sally’s actor deserves more credit, she’s so amazing
When she was freaking out when she was about to be killed by the grandpa, that was impressive acting
@@SB-ew3bk totally agree!! She genuinely sounds terrified in the final act! A great example of a scream queen!!
You can see the total despair and desperation on her part, specially when she was driven to the point of offering herself to the Sawyers. Too bad(and perhaps good too since it shows that the Sawyers are not perverts) that the trio brothers has no interest and all they want is to play with their meal before killing it.

Me when im the last survivor in dead by daylight and i can attempt an escape.

The local idiot FAX
Also the most likely reason leatherface was added to dbd
When I first saw it, I was like, "Ohhh, so THAT'S where they got it!"
I love how James doesn’t even care if we give him shit for the kill count and he just says, “ don’t worry about it it’s fine.”
Love how James is not afraid to say when a movie isn’t not good.
To explain why the truck driver may have jumped out of the truck instead of driving away, I would say he probably thought Leatherface could either break in or chainsaw though the door faster than he could start the truck/ drive away.
And they were panicking
another reason is that the truck takes a while to get going since it was made in the 60's (or thats what ive heard)
@@PIZZA-kv1js doesn't matter. Hold the door shut and floor it. No one is stopping a truck from driving off lol
@@slammysammy9555 hard to drive off when half your wheels are sawed and slashed
It was probably more based on reality. The driver probably didn't take off out of there because he couldn't due to the braking system on that truck at the time and such a hard stop. The brakes wouldn't release, so he couldn't floor it.
Fun fact Jerry's screaming and reacting was legit gunner stayed away from staff so he could get legit reaction
Ed Vazquez and if you pay attention to the camera movement during the final shots of the film, it’s because Gunnar Hanson was waving the chainsaw too close to the camera & Tobe Hooper was dodging the heavy instrument
“Well where are all these darn kids even coming from? Gosh, I moved to the country side to get AWAY from hoolagonry!” Love it
He was probably thinking "Drayton and Nubbins will kill me for this."
As a Texan. I can firmly say that this is a usual Tuesday in August.
