Yeah, I have watched Frozen's video on it a couple times, it looks good. Not sure when he'll be doing the tarps again, I think the response overwhelmed him a little. I've been really happy with this one so far though!
I carried this tarp on my AT thru hike attempt this year. It keep me out of the snow, sleet, and rain in late Feb & early Mar. and held up to some pretty high winds. Love this tarp!
John did you get the 11ft or 12ft? And what size hammock do you have? I am getting a hammock setup to hopefully replace my tent setup. I plan on thru hiking the BMT in the near future so wanna stay light so that's why I'm looking at dcf.
The poles really do open it up! And it's easier than trying to find ways to stake out the panel pulls. And I'm always carrying the poles anyway, might as well put them to use. Thanks!
I have the same tarp. So far a really like it. Another thing i have done with the doors is , if i am close enough to my tree i run the door lines around the tree trunk. This has given me a lot more coverage in non blowing rain to lay gear out and let air in during warmer weather.
This is a great video and you happen to use the exact same setup i do with my Silnylon House Fly from ENO with a few mods. For the pull-outs, i use 2 pairs of Dutchware clip-on’s. They work extremely well. I also don’t use the guy lines they gave. Instead i attach simple shock cord loops to each of the end points on the tarp and then use a Dutchware ringworm to connect the shock cords to the stakes with the guy lines attached. I like this method better because i also use a mesh sleeve and i don’t like having guy lines in there with the tarp. I prefer to wrap the guy lines around each stake and pack them away. I’ve never lost a stake since the guy lines are always attached to them and it makes it so easy to pull out of the ground when they are attached too. When i can save up $500 I’ll upgrade to the Camo palace tarp which is essentially the same thing but half the weight but 5 times the cost. I paid $70 for the ENO House Fly on 50% Christmas sale and the 2 pairs of clip-on pullouts were about $20 shipped from Dutch. The weight of my current tarp setup is 28oz. Until i can save up the $523 for the tarp setup i want, I’ll have to find other ways to save the 16oz. Apart from the weight savings, it’s also worth mentioning that Dyneema does not wet out at all like SilNylon does. I don’t even want to know what my SilNylon tarp weighs when i have to pack it away in the rain. It must be double. While my Duplex has no issues with water and simple flick before packing away and all the water is off. Thanks again for the great video and what a awesome piece of gear! Keep ‘em coming.
It's not cheap by any means, and it is hard to justify the cost vs weight savings. But if you can do it, I don't think you'll regret it in the long run. Thanks for watching!
I like my UGQ tarps. The Hex Hanger 12 and the Winterdream 12. My Hammocks are both Dream Hammock Sparrow models in 11 feet. I need a UGQ tarp in 11 feet. My favorite two trees would be better suited with an 11 foot tarp.
When I upgraded from a smaller tarp, I chose the Warbonnet Superfly. It's a wonderful tarp, and it's available to buy where I live. I would've had to add so much in shipping, vat and custom fees to buy a tarp from the US that buying one that's already expensive just isn't feasible.
I have the same tarp. A good option to secure the doors in a closed position is what’s called a “double - hook apparatus” from Zpacks. You can clip both doors to the hook and then use a single stake to secure them closed. Buy two and you have a very lightweight and quick solution.
Hey Mark. I picked up the HG Journey last year before I hit the PCT. I cycled through a few different tarps over the years like you did before going for the full coverage tarp with doors. The Journey is basically just the sil-poly version of the Palace and I really like the extra space for gear storage and the ability to do all my camp chores under cover if needed. I really wanted the Palace, and will likely upgrade at some point this year, but couldn't afford the extra expense as I was gearing up for my thru hike. Also, the Dyneema tarps are a little noisier in wind and rain but that's not a big deal to me. I will say this though, having a larger tarp with better coverage does NOT mean you can relax your pitch protocols and get sloppy with technique. The extra material makes for a bigger sail in strong winds and there were more than a few nights when I had to get up in the middle of a rain soaked night to fix a hasty pitch that didn't hold. And I still managed to get soaked a couple times due to poor tarp alignment and/or line management.
Great point! In the wind those extra tie outs are vital, and there will be times that using the panel pulls out to stakes rather than using the poles over the top will be a better choice. Thanks!

Thru hiking is an exercise in weight management and nobody wants to add heavier stakes to an already heavier tarp. In those times when I want/need more staking power I can make wooden stakes, add rocks (which is a popular work around on trail) or even double and triple stake particularly troublesome tie-outs. I also did a lot of tying out to shrubs, bushes, pipes, roots, whatever. LOL
I have a Warbonnet minify. It's perfect for me. I usually don't camp in bad weather, though. I have had a freak thunderstorm come in once and I had to pitch that thing real low. I'm in Indiana and our weather isn't that bad.
I'm in Indiana and just has a trip with severe weather so we do have nasty thunderstorms. I am looking at this tarp purely for the weight savings alone over the sil-poly dutchware tarp with the internal pole mod. It's a great tarp but weighs twice as much as this one.
Mark, I’m glad to see your open presentation. I have 2 tarps, both from Cooke Custom Sewing. They are silnylon. One is 10’X12’, and the other is 10’X10’. They have tie down loops all the way around all 4 sides, and back and forth across both centerlines. There are also 4 loops at the center, on the under side for tying around a pole or paddle. Lastly, there is a center loop on top for a line to pull it up. I like the dyneema, but wouldn’t give up all of those loops to get it. As I look around the inside under your deployed tarp, I can’t help but notice the translucence. It looks like a greenhouse. Thanks for the comment. The dyneema is much less opaque than any color silnylon, and it does have a bit of a greenhouse effect, but if there is any breeze and you set it up so the breeze flows through it's not bad at all. The biggest differences, other than weight, between the two are the packability and the noise. Silnylon and Silpoly pack down much smaller than dyneema, and dyneema is much louder. It has the "tin roof" type of effect.
I thought I'd love the trekking pole, pull out set up. But as soon as I saw those pointy tips wobbling above my $425 tarp, I could not get them down fast enough.
I've got the 12 that I can actually use with my RR. The OEM pullouts aren't exact but i didn't specify upon purchase as i bought it to use with my Darien in Summer. Made a custom stuff sack that follows the contours of the rolled Dyneema versus stuffed sil. (HG might wanna consider offering this...jus' sayin). All in all though, great tarp and another great review even though there's no drone footage lol.
I love my HG tarp, but mine started to delaminate at the 5 year mark and I baby mine. It's way more durable than I expected for abrasion. Zero resistance to punctures, lol, but I kind of feel these are a 5 year investment before they will start to fail.
Interesting, wonder how many long term tests there are out there? How many nights did you get under it? 5 years isn't a bad run, but for the price you'd always hope for more. Thanks!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 I can't say how many definitively but I know that I've had it out at least 80 nights a year. My Superfly on the other hand while much heavier, looks the same as the day I got it. I definitely got a good run out of it either way, but these days I use the Superfly unless I'm going on a long trek where weight is more of a concern.
Maybe someday I'll get an UL tarp, I'm stuck in "bushcraft mode" so mine are a bit heavier. Currently I use DD Hammock tarps which are polyester, so a bit heavier ;).
I've never heard about anyone having a failure with a HG DCF tarp aside from branches and whatnot. Zpacks yes (don't get me started) but not HG. My only concern with that tarp is that it has that seem. I'm sure it's fine but at that price point it's something to consider.
Nice review. I have had the standard for 5+ years and then the hail got it, so yes that can happen. I had a bunch of pin holes all over the tarp. Broken leaves were driven into the fabric. So, would I get another? I did! And still love it. Thinking about the Palace for the winter though.
Just found four holes in my HG dyneema tarp. Kinda odd as it's been babied. They patched easily, but it was mildly concerning. I do use mine in the exact same manner as you do though, it's just easier. It's also nice to settle on one tarp for all trips.

have you tried this in porch mode? of course you'd have to take off the pole mods but what I'm really wondering is if the extra width of the palace as opposed to the standard makes it hard to get the side high enough to really be able to sit and have a good view out. Like you I have the Standard w/ doors and a Palace (also have a Standard w/out doors). I don't use the Palace often enough. Great tarp, just seem to grab one of the Standards by habit. How do you find the HG mesh sleeve fits? I find it kind of tight...
I do find it much tighter on the palace than on the standard. I can easily slide it on and off the standard, but need to actually gather the palace before pulling it over, and do it by section. Thanks!
Does the continuous Ridgeline take away from the length of the tarp at all? I was thinking of going with a shorter tarp (11 foot with doors for my 11 foot hammock) but I'm wondering if that would be cutting it uncomfortably close. -Thanks
I've got the same thing and paid 700 for it, over a thousand with tooling but I did over buy on the gadgets that you can use with it. I love it though... But I feel like I paid way too much for it now, maybe they got to me a little bit? Speaking of the money. I'm not cheap, I will buy whatever is the top notch stuff anytime but the more I think I might have paid twice to much, the more its starting to burn my ass a little

Have you seen Outdoor Adventures new light AF cuben fiber tarp? I would like to get a cuben fiber tarp customized to fit the new Dutch Bridge hammock so when I'm sitting in it I don't have any problems of the poles hitting the side and it comes about 12 in from the ground when set up. Don't know if it's possible for you to help me with trying to come up with the dimensions and size. I know I'm looking for at least 12 in. If you could help would be grateful.
I think the bigger size is on the horizon, until then this will work okay, but you have to be very careful on the pitch of it. I can run some numbers by hanging my hammock and tarp and see what I come up with. How soon are you looking for this?

Bigger tarps (and tents) require a more secure anchor. Bigger stakes are a must (more, sometimes, too).

It will, but it does need to be set up a bit wider and higher. The doors won't completely close set up that way.

Use porch mode a lot. I just use the poles fully extended and it’s fine.
Do you still keep your Dutch hardware (e.g. stingerz and ringworms) attached to a dyneema tarp when you pack it up in a snakeskin or stuff sack?
I do keep my suspension attached all the time. I wrap it around the outside of the snakeskin when I roll it up.

If you connect the corners of the doors BEFORE you set your stakes, it seems to set up better if you're looking for more end closure

I do like the green. I have the Duplex in Camo, it does provide more privacy, but I'm not a fan of the camo really. Thanks!
Does the continuous Ridgeline take away from the length of the tarp at all? I was thinking of going with a shorter tarp (11 foot with doors for my 11 foot hammock) but I'm wondering if that would be cutting it uncomfortably close. -Thanks
Can this design be potentionally used without the trees and hammock?
I've got the same thing and paid 700 for it, over a thousand with tooling but I did over buy on the gadgets that you can use with it. I love it though... But I feel like I paid way too much for it now, maybe they got to me a little bit? Speaking of the money. I'm not cheap, I will buy whatever is the top notch stuff anytime but the more I think I might have paid twice to much, the more its starting to burn my ass a little

Have you seen Outdoor Adventures new light AF cuben fiber tarp? I would like to get a cuben fiber tarp customized to fit the new Dutch Bridge hammock so when I'm sitting in it I don't have any problems of the poles hitting the side and it comes about 12 in from the ground when set up. Don't know if it's possible for you to help me with trying to come up with the dimensions and size. I know I'm looking for at least 12 in. If you could help would be grateful.
I think the bigger size is on the horizon, until then this will work okay, but you have to be very careful on the pitch of it. I can run some numbers by hanging my hammock and tarp and see what I come up with. How soon are you looking for this?

You staked it out too wide. The doors close fine, even great with a proper set-up. It's a hammock tarp not a car cover.
