Jason, Quick note to let you know that after I viewed this video 3 months ago and I was finally able to get out in the woods and use my new Hammock Gear Cuben Fiber Tarp. I utilized all of your suggested tie-outs except the trekking poles over the top of the tarp since we were expecting rain during the night. As the thunder storm started to blow, I was able to quickly shut the flaps without getting wet. Thanks for your tips and all your videos!
Jason, you are amazing and have taught me so much. Little by little I am employing your techniques into my setup. Thank you so much for your explicit instructions. Have a great weekend. Take Care
WOW! Thank you so much! I have been using a Jacks R Better 11x 10 tarp for over five years. I love the tarp, love the coverage, but I have never been able to figure out the doors. I have always staked them out and could never get them to close just right. I have lost track of how many videos I have seen but no one has broken down a tarp set up the way you have. I am going to try your idea the first chance I get. The pole spacer idea is brilliant. Again, many thanks.
Great idea about the hiking pole mods! Definitely giving that a try. I switched to the mitten hooks for the doors as well after "borrowing" your original idea with the clips and had the same frustrations that drove you to switch. One mod I did though was remove the actual clip part of the mitten hook basically just making them into a hook. So much easier to move on and off without having to deal with the clips and there is no way hey will come off due to the tension in the shock cord
Do it, I tested it out last week on the Virginia triple crown (your inspiration). Absolutely no drawbacks with not having the clips. It was great when it started thunder storming unexpectedly overnight and I had to deploy the doors real quick in that groggy 2am state, lol
hahaha, i knew i couldn't of come up with such a good idea by myself! I watched your video several times back when i got my superfly and basically combined yours and frozen's techniques after wasting a lot of time and money with other stuff. Thanks to you both for great tarp videos!
Another of good content in the whole beginner tarp series. I have the Duo asymmetrical hammock with surround bug net. I also bought a 10x12 tarp as extra protection against horizontal rain like we get in Florida. I think it is just nylon, which is pretty heavy, but strong. The door internal rig to outside stake is a super idea. I can always make tall stakes for flapping problem since I don't have walking sticks yet.
You could try attaching the two pullouts together so you would only need one pole in the middle to raise the sides. On each side attach the two pullouts so the line meets in the middle, then use the pole in the same manor. this way you have an extra pole to use for what you may need.
I'm new to hammocking and when my hammock arrives from Darien, I will give some of your idea a try. They look good and make a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing.
Didnt even finish the video before I went and got the Dutchware ridgeline. I camp off my motorcycle, and switched to a hammock last year. I always hated the tarp set up, having to recenter by untying and retying... This makes so much more sense... Headed out again next weekend, so keeping my fingers crossed the ridgeline gets here in time. And yes, I did finish the video after buying the ridgeline.
I am saving for a Warbonnet Super Fly tarp. I have seen that mod with the poles before, but you showed in detail how they were attached. My biggest problem so far is I don't use trecking poles, I use a walking staff. Stick would get pissed if i dumped him for some trecking poles and left him at home. I see what you can use trecking poles for like setting up porch mode or using them to set up a ground tarp config. More work in the back yard learning how to do this. Feels like the wilderness with four legged animals roaming till I cut the grass. I set my Blackbird XLC with a blue hardware store tarp in the back yard and Coal who is a Great Dane Lab mix wanted me to move over so he could get in :-) Learning a lot from your videos, thanks for everything. Bruce from the City of orange in Orange county California. '
I love posts like this. Good job and thank you! I think I'm going to use a lot of your ideas, but I'm going to splice everything to avoid the knots. =) When I was a Scoutmaster I did everything with knots (more to show the boys how knowing knots is useful), but now I'm all about the Dutch bling and how quick and simple it is. Also, I like a little more "V" in my tarp suspension so that I can have it straddle my hammock suspension and get lower to the ground (just requires a wasp on both sides).
Good setup! I should add some shock cord to my tie outs, but for some reason I just haven't done it yet. Maybe after our West Virginia trip in 2 weeks!! lol
Best tarp breakdown I've seen on UA-cam yet. Great ideas, Dutch should be paying you for this video cause he just got more sales (from me) because of it haha.
Awesome video Jason. I've got a similar setup with HG CF Tarp and use Tarpfly/dutch hook for continuous Ridgeline. Stole the idea from Derek of ultimate hang. Andrew Skurka also has a great video on guy line setup without hardware. Allows for natural anchor points which has come in handy on several occasions.
Thanks for sharing your setup. I'm using a 12' HG CF tarp and I have a similar setup. I've been using 4 extra stakes and guyline for the doors but I like what you did with the shock cord and mitten hooks. Looking forward to your next adventure out on the trail!
Really good video. I have a hammock gear cuben fiber tarp with wilderness logics snakeskins (no doors). I'm tossing around the idea of upgrading to a HG tarp with doors. Really good tips, thanks for posting.
Great vid, always enjoy watching these kind of videos! Using a similar setup on my WB Superfly, I like leaving my lines attached to the tarp though. I'm trying out Dutch's slidelocks( think that's the name ) and so far they have been working great. keep up the great work!
Just found you channel and subbed - great content! Your clear explications and links to items in the videos are extremely helpful. Thanks for putting these vids up - I've got a lot of catching up to do. Peace
Great look at your setup. I have a tarp with doors also, and I use shockcords and mittenhooks as well, and I'm wondering if you've found a good way of deploying the doors in one side only? Sometimes the wind comes from one direction, and I'd still like to look out, or get the airflow in the other end, but if I close one side, the other side is floppy since I don't have anything to attach it to. On my corners I use lineloc 3's, which works out marvellously. I really need to get pullouts added to my tarp, cause that is a neat trick you've got there!
Yes actually, when that happens I attach the mitten hooks not in use to the loop I made on the zing it attached to the pullouts. So they are on the outside where I showed the holes used to secure the trekking pole. Hope that helps.
I have always just used knots yet find when my hands are cold, I would like some hooks to make things faster and more streamlined. Ordering the hardware to duplicate your set up. I prefer a continuous ridgeline not only to use the trekking pole mod but to take some strain off my tarp. Thanks again Jason!
Awesome ideas. I do have a question, in the event where you don't have any trees for whatever reason do you have a method of pitching the tarp on open ground?
You can use 2 tripods of thick saplings, one for each end. Each pole need to be around 8 feet long to give enough height for the hammock and still remain stable.
Thanks for sharing, I'm now googling 'Dutchware' products. Great ideas and I love the trekking pole idea of yours Atb Colin ans Mark from Ultralight nights Ps just suubed you
How long are the pieces of guy lines you keep on your stakes? Also thanks for all the amazing info. I started watching your channel about halfway through your hike of the AT and I’ve been a fan ever since. Keep doing what you’re doing, thanks again for all the informative content.
Love the set up and the dutchware used....similar to what I do, but haven't splurged on the cuben fiber yet.....can you give me your honest opinion about the noise of it in the wind/rain and and its see thru-ness, also, if its hot out could the sun potentially bake you in your hammock if one was to sleep late? Great video Jason!
The rain is a bit noisy compared to silnylon. See thru-ness doesn't both me, I always have my buff available to slide over my eyes if needed. I could see it being hot under the tarp in the sun, but I haven't experienced it since I always wake up early and get to camp before. Trust me though once you get a cuben tarp you will never go back to silnylon.
Thanks Jason! Also, glad I saw your vid about wolf and beam rocks.....just got back from Ohiopyle white water rafting with the fam and took my boys to both overlooks and flew the drone. The views were epic!
I'm digging the trek pole idea. I don't use trekking poles while hiking, so would two tree branches work as well? I also dig the mitten hook idea. I have hooks as well, but without the extra clip. As mentioned below, it's much easier to unsnap with one hand and also in winter while wearing gloves. Also, for the tie outs, I've seen a few people integrate the shock cord directly to the line as a fail prove backup in case the shock cord snaps for any reason. The way it is set up now, if your shock cord snaps in the middle of the night for any reason, that corner of your tarp will be flapping around until you adjust it. I'm definitely trying out the trek pole idea, perhaps with some branches. Thanks for the idea.
Hey Frozen, Great mods and content. Have you used/considered Niteize Camjam to anchor the tarp beaks from each end of your snakeskin stuff sack to each tree? It would eliminate carrying a full length ridge line. Would you recommend the camo print for more privacy when changing or is it the same translucence as the green? Are the doors a 'should have' or a luxury? Many thanks #44
Haven't tried the camjams but I don't know how that would work to center tarp. I think the camo print is pretty nice but extra weight and costs. I'm happy with the color I have. It blurs everything out enough that you cant tell. I usually get dressed under my quilt anyway.
First, great video, thank you. Second, is that the 11 or 12 foot version. Which would you get if buying again and what size hammock do you use with it?
Love your mods on this!! I just bought the same sleep system:)))). I'm so pumped!! I want to do the same....How long is the string for the side pull outs? Also, how long is the bungee cord for the tarp doors. Thank you so much!!
Really cool, Frozen, and I'm not even a hammock guy (here in Brazil the hammocks available here and the tarps are just so bad... ), but I liked the video nonetheless.. I was wondering, you think that in mountain situations you could use your tarp as your shelter and you lay in the ground with a ground sheet? I mean, not just mountain, but any situation that you wouldn't be able to hang a hammock: deserts, mountain ridges, etc. Thanks
Thanks for the great video. I just started hammock camping and love it. I have been hanging my tarp the same way with one exception. I am hanging it over the ridge line. Is that wrong? If so, please elaborate. Thanks
You can do it either way. Whatever works for you. With cuben fiber tarps (they are 2 pieces taped together at the top) i worried about the line cutting in and abrasion. But yes it doesn't matter you can do it either way.
Thanks for this video! This is super helpful, and extreamly easy way for the door management. Also, I lime how you listed all the materials in the info. One question, do you recommend a length on the shock cord to use on each door? Thanks for all of your great videos.
Excellent video! How dry does your gear stay under the tarp on the ground, or do you hang it and do you get much spray coming from under the tarp in higher windy rains?
It really depends. On rainy nights where the wind is calm everything stays completely dry with good site selection (not camping in a water run off), with high winds sometimes and rain, sometimes i'll just hang my pack over the the suspension of my hammock at the foot end. No issues either way. This video has gotten a lot more attention than i originally thought so I might discuss my hammock setup and what I do in different situations.
Outdoor Adventures please do a hammock setup video. I'm new to hammocking, and videos like this are really helpful for me. Thanks for sharing your videos!
Have you ever used just the shock cord in a continuous loop on your tie out and connected them to hooked stakes? I have found this to be a very quick set up and no need to take all the time to wind up the tie outs to your tent stakes. Can you think of any reason that using only the shock cord tie outs would be bad for your tarp?
Frozen, I am brand new to the hammock world. I have a couple of questions. How long are your guy lines from the tarp to the stakes? How long are your shock cords on the doors? Thank you for the help!
How wide is it when the doors are closed? I am thinking about using this tarp for hammock camping as well as a ground shelter system for two people. Thank you for the informative Video!
Can't tell you specifics but I feel it could fit 2 people comfortably. Laid flat the tarp is 8'6" wide but I've never gotten the chance to have a tape measure during set up.
I have yet to get a tarp, been watching videos about them trying to decide which one to get. I really liked your video and explination. Why not run the ridge line under the tarp?
I just ordered a tattoo like this, and I would like to know the length of shock cord you used on the doors. I want to order some mitten hooks and cordage.
@@FrozensAdventures I saw the shock cord that you bought, I was just curious if you knew the length you cut the cord for the doors.no biggie if you don't
I'm currently choosing between the 10' or 11' Hammock Gear Tarp with doors for my ENO Sub6 hammock. I'm leaning towards 10 feet since it'll save weight and I plan to have a continuous ridgeline to adjust the coverage. Does anyone have advice whether 10 or 11 would be best? The downside of 10 is if things are too cramped.
Daniel, I ended up getting the 12' Ridgeline Tarp from Hammock Gear with doors. I wanted the extra space so I could be under it during rain to cook, etc. Testing it out on the AT this weekend!
Hey there Jason, might you be able to comment on how long your ridgeline is? Mine is pretty long and am thinking i could cut it down in size and not have so much extraneous cordage. Would love to get some idea of what you've found to be adequate for your outdoor adventures. Thanks!
I think mine is 20-25 foot. But it's zing it so not a big weight reduction. Sometimes I extend the Ridgeline past the tree I'm using and I have a great place to hang stuff to dry.
Trying to understand what you mean. The pole nods attach to some zing it with a prussik. The lines are attached to the pullouts on the side of the tarp. Let me know if that answers your question.
Trying to understand what you mean. The pole nods attach to some zing it with a prussik. The lines are attached to the pullouts on the side of the tarp. Let me know if that answers your question.
I run my ridge line under my tarp and it gives me a place to hang clothes and gear and gives it a nice crease and it’s more stable. Would there be any issues doing so with this tarp? I’m looking into getting one for sure. I also use prusik knots for ridgline as well Thanks
I can't speak from experience. But I DCF is taped in the middle so it might cause abrasion over time. I would honestly leave it above the tarp. Maybe someone else can weigh in.
I've incorporated alot of this in my UGQ Winterdream Silpoly. Now I'm starting to look into a DCF tarp...probably with doors too. Any suggestions? How long is yours?
I noticed that your mesh snakeskin was one piece. All the mesh snake skins I have seen come in 2 pieces where you get that bulge in the middle. If I'm correct about this where did you get it? Good video! Real nuts and bolts info for many.
It's technically called a sleeve, but check the description box of the video. It has everything I used in this video. If you're on mobile. It's on hammockgear.com under accessories.
Finally...someone who explains every piece of their tarp set up in detail. Very simple and nice set up. Glad to see they got your new tarp out to ya.
Yup the cat cut was wrong and they ended up making me a brand new tarp free.
LawnDad came here to say this, now I don’t have to. Cheers mate
Jason,

+ChrisfromFL glad it worked out for you! Love hearing that people can use ideas they see in my videos to better their setup to make things easier.
I like your prusik not tie outs for pole mod. I’ve been thinking of doing the same, good to see it in action, thanks for the vid!
Jason, you are amazing and have taught me so much. Little by little I am employing your techniques into my setup. Thank you so much for your explicit instructions. Have a great weekend. Take Care
I this is the best tarp video out there. You hit on a lot of good tips. Good idea on the trekking pole spreader!
Great Call with the Hiking Poles I have never seen that done before.
Awesome setup. I like what you did with the trekking poles and the tarp.
I’m definitely going to start hammock camping instead of tenting after watching your videos! Thank you
I do both these days. Enjoy
Do it, I tested it out last week on the Virginia triple crown (your inspiration). Absolutely no drawbacks with not having the clips. It was great when it started thunder storming unexpectedly overnight and I had to deploy the doors real quick in that groggy 2am state, lol
Nice! Hmmm, where have I seen this idea before? :)
hahaha, i knew i couldn't of come up with such a good idea by myself!
Probably silnylon or silpoly. Even though it's a little heavier it packs down much much smaller than cuben/DCF
You could try attaching the two pullouts together so you would only need one pole in the middle to raise the sides. On each side attach the two pullouts so the line meets in the middle, then use the pole in the same manor. this way you have an extra pole to use for what you may need.

I have this exact tarp and am setting it up now. I cannot thank you enough for all these "mods".

This is exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you so much for going into the details, an excellent vid.
Good setup! I should add some shock cord to my tie outs, but for some reason I just haven't done it yet. Maybe after our West Virginia trip in 2 weeks!! lol
dude...trecking pole pull out......MIND BLOWN....wow....so simple....awesome!!!
Best tarp breakdown I've seen on UA-cam yet. Great ideas, Dutch should be paying you for this video cause he just got more sales (from me) because of it haha.
same here! im about to drop some bills on dutch myself. jason should be a damn embassador for him 😅
Awesome video Jason. I've got a similar setup with HG CF Tarp and use Tarpfly/dutch hook for continuous Ridgeline. Stole the idea from Derek of ultimate hang. A lot of good points. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Take care, Al
Great vid, and thanks the tip, now to try to invest in a tarp 😉 I have a tent, but I need to lighten the load by at least a 1/3 due to my disability.
Jason That’s slick Bro. Very nice.
This is great! Awesome set up! Thank you for sharing your ideas!
Great vid, always enjoy watching these kind of videos!
Using a similar setup on my WB Superfly, I like leaving my lines attached to the tarp though.
I'm trying out Dutch's slidelocks( think that's the name ) and so far they have been working great.
keep up the great work!

+Woods and Hills welcome to the channel.
Awesome! .... Great idea with your trek poles! Love your videos :)
Thank you, several good ideas here i'm going to put to use.
Great video! Lots of useful tips. I love experimenting with my set-ups. Always after that "perfect" one.
Keep up the good work!
Great video I just bought this tarp and can't wait to try it out.
Great setup, I am definitely gonna try them out. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome tips! Learned so much!
Loved the video! I'm going on a trip in 3 weeks and will be utilizing all your tips.
Fantastic how-to. Thank you for sharing.

Hi. How long are the bungees on your doors? they look to be about 18". Thanks.
How long are the pieces of guy lines you keep on your stakes? Also thanks for all the amazing info. I started watching your channel about halfway through your hike of the AT and I’ve been a fan ever since. Keep doing what you’re doing, thanks again for all the informative content.
I like 4'. If you head over to warbonnet a cottage hammock and tarp vendor, they have a great video on the recommended length of all lines.
You you can use sticks just be careful of slippage.
ah great point thx
great ideas have to give em a try

Get 1 foot bigger than your hammock.
Thanks for sharing! Great vid!

+Lucas Jorge I could technically use it as a bivy. But id be worried about ground insulation. I'd have to fill up my pack somehow and sleep on that.
Thinking about getting this HG tarp but in the silpoly for my WBRR
awesome video. what is the benefit of having doors on a tarp?

Frozen, very helpful. Dutchware ridgeline link no longer available. Can you send me you link to purchase dutchware ontinuous ridgeline?
Thanks for this video! This is super helpful, and extreamly easy way for the door management. Also, I lime how you listed all the materials in the info. One question, do you recommend a length on the shock cord to use on each door? Thanks for all of your great videos.
I’d love more detailed info on the trekking pole mod for the panel pull outs...
A video for this is coming out tomorrow.
THANK YOU! THAT'S REALLY COOL!
Probably be a LOT of stretch and sag to the tarp when the wind blows.
Great job very helpful. On the pole mod do you use the prusik knots on the end guy out lines for porch mode? Or do you not every setup porch mode
Porch mode I use the D rings and put my trekking pole tip in the guy line hole.
They get tied back. If I'm using porch mode it's good weather usually.
Frozen, I am brand new to the hammock world. I have a couple of questions. How long are your guy lines from the tarp to the stakes? How long are your shock cords on the doors? Thank you for the help!
Check out the addendum video. I have all the info for ya. It's linked in the video description and top right.
Outdoor Adventures I checked it out! I appreciate the response! Thank you so much!
Great video!
Is it possible to use the trekking pole mod without a continuous ridgeline on the tarp?
That's a good question. Not really sure on that one.
+Mrgeekmedic since Cuben tarps are taped I fear it would ruin it. Easier to center also. And the pole mod wouldn't work if it was underneath
Awesome video...
what diameter zingit is the way to go?
I just ordered a tattoo like this, and I would like to know the length of shock cord you used on the doors. I want to order some mitten hooks and cordage.
See the tarp addendum. That linked. Everything you need is there.
@@FrozensAdventures I saw the shock cord that you bought, I was just curious if you knew the length you cut the cord for the doors.no biggie if you don't
Love your videos.......:). Have you tried Superfly from Warbonnet?
I have not, but my friend has it. Lots of coverage.
Can one use solely shock cord to tie the tarp down to the stake in the ground?
You can but it will flap a lot in heavy wind. I don't recommend it.
@@FrozensAdventures Thanks a lot.
Good info
Thanks
I understand in the wind and rain, those tarps/tents are loud.
Sold! I'll take one :)
Jason, did you get the 11' or 12' tarp? love your videos!
I have a 10' hamock so I got the 11' tarp.
Thanks! If you did it all over again, would you still get the 11'? Appreciate you taking time to respond!
Get the 11 in case you ever decide to go with a 10 foot hammock.
Daniel, I ended up getting the 12' Ridgeline Tarp from Hammock Gear with doors. I wanted the extra space so I could be under it during rain to cook, etc. Testing it out on the AT this weekend!
Very clever
Did you have to add the continuous ridgeline and prussik knot adjustment feature or can you order it from hammock gear like that?
You can order it from dutchwaregear.com search for CRL
Outdoor Adventures do you have the soft shackles or tato tarp connector option for the Dutch ware continuous ridgeline?
@@geech08 soft shackles for me
I saved some weight by using more zingit and less shock cord.I forget how much exactly but at the time it seemed significant.
+jerryj bloodworth great idea! I'll have to look into that.
thats a larka head knot wheb you just pull the loop through a fixed eye loop. nice tarp.
Lark's Head
Girth hitch
Hey there Jason, might you be able to comment on how long your ridgeline is? Mine is pretty long and am thinking i could cut it down in size and not have so much extraneous cordage. Would love to get some idea of what you've found to be adequate for your outdoor adventures. Thanks!
I think mine is 20-25 foot. But it's zing it so not a big weight reduction. Sometimes I extend the Ridgeline past the tree I'm using and I have a great place to hang stuff to dry.
Maybe this is a silly question but what do you do if you just want to deploy the doors on one side? Hook the other ones to the side pulls?
+Sam Smith yes that's exactly what I do. It helps prevent condensation that way as well.
Ordering that tarp...are those points you used for pole mod the door tie out pints or extra guy outs..seems std guy out is one?
Trying to understand what you mean. The pole nods attach to some zing it with a prussik. The lines are attached to the pullouts on the side of the tarp. Let me know if that answers your question.

Outdoor Adventures did the tarp come std with a total of four side pull out attachment points?
Yup pullouts should be standard.
How are the shockcord guylines in tough conditions? My only fear about using them is realizing I made a big mistake halfway through a stormy night.
Never had a problem
I run my ridge line under my tarp and it gives me a place to hang clothes and gear and gives it a nice crease and it’s more stable. Would there be any issues doing so with this tarp? I’m looking into getting one for sure. I also use prusik knots for ridgline as well
Thanks
It's on hammockgear.com under accessories.
briliant!
Do you think these same mods would work on their sil poly version with doors?
And how much weight would it add?
The weight of the mods is about 3 oz at the most but yes it will work with any tarp material.
Setting up my new Tarp and want to reapply your door idea....What size shock cord did you use on the doors 1/16,1/8th ? Thanks
+Hiking with Yowie I believe it's 1/8th because you want some tension when you deploy the doors.
How long is your shock cord on the doors?
I go over all the lengths in my tarp mods addendum if you need more info. I think I linked it in the suggest videos.
