I have both snake skins and prefer the mesh over the cuben fiber one. I take the tarp down with the mesh and then put it in the front pocket ( Mesh pocket ) of my pack so it can semi-dry out during the day. If it was a really rainy night then I will hang it some time during the day when I take a lunch break. The cuben fiber snake skin is used with a cuben fiber tarp. With the cuben fiber tarp I can shake it and a lot of the moisture on it will shake off of it. My main complaint with the cuben fiber tarp is that it's really loud during a rain.
I agree, I like the mesh a lot more than I like any solid snakeskin. I don't really have too much of a problem with the noise of the cf tarp, but I do understand those that do.
Really wish I had gotten this instead of my two piece mesh skins-- purely for the fact of the bubble in the middle is always a p.i.t.a. to deal with.. especially when windy! Great review by the way.. these are now on my short list.
Great video! IMHO the only advantage to Cuben fiber is durability and lifespan. Mesh will inherently be torn up first. I have both as well and for the money I can buy several mesh compared to one cuben. I myself prefer the mesh.
Thx for the video. Asked the question on HF about 6 weeks ago. I went with mesh even though I’m going through a Dcf buying frenzy. Any other cuben videos would be great. I’ve seen your backpack vid and now I’m considering. Hang on.
When i first saw it, I was like dude! I spliced that. I noticed the weight of the mesh HG sleeve as well. I wonder how it is so light? It has to be a .5 mesh then? If the cuben is .51, and the exact same amount of fabric is used... Only other explanation is that either the cuben with the olive green coating is heavier than .51, or they are taping cuben scraps together to make the skins, adding weight with the tape.
I have owned 4 cuben skins and one mesh, I think two them were taped scraps, but no big deal of course. I do think it is interesting though. I am assuming that mesh is .67 nanoseeum, so that means that the ".51" cuben weighs almost double that...
Awesome, I had never heard of them. I checked them out and they look pretty good, they use the right fabrics, I'm just not sure how they get them so wide. 74" is really wide!
I just received my HG winter palace today and got the mesh snakeskin. It was a pain to try to get on. I'm wondering if I got one that was not sized right because it was pretty hard to get on and wasn't long enough leaving about 2 ft hanging out. I contacted HG and hopefully they can help.
Have you ever tried the luffa wash thingy mod? You cut the string on the inside and it unfolds into a long net like a snake skin. I tried it for my Blackbird XLC and it works. It doesn't have any ties at the end, it is just a long net tube. I guess you could fold over and sew in a channel for some shock cord. thanks for the video. Thanks fro the reply. I am mostly a back yard camper :-(. My son gets me out once a year to Mammoth lakes or Yosemite backpacking. Next year I want to try hammock camping. He is a big tent camper so the discussions have been interesting. I have been watching a lot of UA-cam to learn about tarps and hammocks. Then try it in the back yard. Hoping to get a Superfly tarp. The loofah net gives me something to practice with. Here is another option for storing a wet tarp. ua-cam.com/video/THckcO7A9ng/v-deo.html It is probably one of those things you have to use for a while to give it an honest chance. Most people try things once or twice then give up on it. I can see the advantages you pointed out to a single snake skin over the two piece ones. Thanks for the videos, I am learning a lot from them. Bruce from the city of orange in orange county California
Maybe a silly question, but do you think it would harm the tarp to keep it stored (at home) rolled up the way you do in the morning? I liked your technique.
Great and informative video ! I have been considering a snake skin (as well as a better tarp, plus hammock, plus suspension, plus continuous ridge line for the hammock, and one for the tarp, plus etc., etc., etc.,....LOLOLOLOL !!! Aren't we all ? LOL !), and am glad that you covered this aspect. My question is... what is the differences between the Cuban fiber, sil-poly, and sil-nylon traps (materials) ??? Do you have a video covering that aspect of the tarps ?? Any information on that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Keep up the great work !!!
I have a Hammock How-To series, in one of them I cover tarps. I'm not sure if I go into the different aspects of the material, I'll have to go back and give that a look and see if that might need to be revisited! Thanks!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Thanks for reply. Do you just wrap your Dutch bling (stingerz, ringworms, etc) or other metal hardware up with the tarp in the snakeskin? I'm a little worried these could rub on tarp. Also, what's the meaning behind "Spiguyver"? I remember the show MacGuyver but where does the spider come in?
that's really cool skins one day I want to try a hammock got to hold alot of weight. but being my back prob can't sleep on my back the pressure but being a hammock off the ground should take off some pressure hope so been a long time since I sleep on my back. but good video. god bless
Spiguyver Backpacking nice, It should be here tomorrow just in time for my next trip. I’m all about anything that can save me time setting up & breaking down camp! That means more time on the Water!!
Photo-bombed by the Law! LOL. No respect for video content. Hey, can you flip the tarp inside out before putting the snake skin on to help dry (assuming its condensation your working on)?

TwentyOneTwelve Thanks!
Great comparison review! I can see advantages to both. Thanks for sharing!
i like the mesh snake skin. May have to look into that myself.
Great demo!

It's a great pack! I have quite a bit of DCF as well!
This was a good test thank you and really loved the hair cut.
Pretty cool to see something I made in your videos. (CRLs from UGQ).

Hi Mark I want to thank you for your great videos. I ordered a hammock and tarp from Hemlock Mountain Outdoors which is a cottage company from PA.

Spiguyver Backpacking I will let you know. It is about 6” wider than the Chameleon wide .
Spiguyver Backpacking Good Morning I did some research Ripstop by the Roll in NC sells silpoly in 75” widths
Crazy, very good! I am not Sure what's better for me to make by myself 😊 thank you for this Video. I will try it with mash! Greatings from Berlin
I like it with mesh best. I have a few of them now and prefer the mesh. Good luck! Thanks!

I agree with you, their sleeves are a little tight on the palace. There are others out there who make some with a little more room.

Yosemite and the Ansel Adams wilderness around Mammoth are both amazing areas! I'm hoping to get back out in that area next year!

Do you think your Hammock would fit in the cuben fiber skin?
Very Interesting... Liked your vid.... good experiment and comparison. I'm going with Mesh Now... Thanks
The mesh is the best choice, in my opinion!

@@SpiguyverBackpacking1, Thank you, Brother !!!
Happy to help!
Is it necessary to use a continuous ridgeline with snakeskins or can you use a dual/split ridgeline with snakeskins?
You can use a snakeskin with dual/split Ridgeline. I've done that on several tarps. Thanks!

Wish you would have weighed both after you rolled them up..im trying to decide between SilPoly and DCF tarp with doors.
The SilPoly is significantly heavier, even in the membrane that mine is in, without doors, than the DCF tarp with doors.
Either one, a good piece of hammock kit. Thanks. ZZ.
Just ordered the mesh, thanks.
very educational thanks for the comparison.
I have a mesh snakeskin coming with my new tarp. Was looking for dyneema but didnt see it available. Now I feel I lucked out. How durable is the mesh?
I haven't had any of my mesh ones have any problems with durability. I am careful not to drag mine on the ground though.
Spiguyver Backpacking Awesome! Thanks for the great comparison video!
How do you attached the skins with a continuous ridge line?
I put the tarp and CRL up, then put the skin on over both of them. Thanks!
what hammock do you have for your little one?

Ok I'll do that thanks. God bless
I'm not seeing them on the HG site yet. Any word on when they are releasing them for sale?
your absolutely right ty!
Are you sure the Cuben fiber skin was completely dry before weighing it?
What are the dimensions of your sil poly?
I have a sil poly that is the UGQ 11'WB, and it's 132" x 116", and a membrane UGQ 12' that is 144" x 116". Thanks!
I was referring to the one in the video? Do you know the dimensions of that specific one.
That's the 11'WB one.
The mesh is resistant ?
The mesh is pretty tough and I haven't seen any issues using it for a while now.
how about turn into cuben fiber snake skin inside out
Great review I just ordered 1. I love camping with my hammock!!! Check out my channel sometime....
Sweet, I have one on each of my tarps!
