Hammock Gear makes some absolutely AMAZING gear. The attention to detail and craftsmanship that they put into their quilts and tarps is second to none in my opinion. They were my first choice when I was thinking of having a custom minus 10° UQ & matching minus 10° TQ made. Harry took time out of his vacation to answer my emails and helped me design a set of quilts that was exactly what I had envisioned. Both have a 5" tall baffle height to allow the massive amount of down room to loft . They made the Burrow TQ a custom short length, added mini Beastie D rings to the Incubator UQ to allow it to be attached to my hammock along the sides to better keep it in place as well as other custom elements on both quilts. They recently stopped taking requests for custom work so I'm glad I got them when I did! HG does awesome work and I totally recommend them to anyone looking for quilts. If anyone is interested, I have reviews of both quilts, as well as my 40° Econ Burrow in my channel..... Another great vid Cpl. !

I never thought I'd see the day the Corporal went ultralight instead of canvas and leather. I personally don't care for the Dyneema fabric stuff. It's prone to punctures by everything it touches and it crunches like a chip bag when the wind whips past it. I sold mine and went back to Silpoly/Silnylon as a half-measure. I hope you enjoy Dave's gear though. 😆 S/F

My 1st deployment I learned you can’t put a price on comfort... this is definitely something for those that enjoy such things. It’s not unobtanium! People still haven’t grasped the concept that quality and durable materials won’t always be cheap. I get folks can’t justify spending as much on something they’ll barley use BUT there’s a lot of us that will and won’t complain one bit.

I can see using this on the Appalachian Trail where it would take weeks if not months to travel-- weight being the primary issue. But I'm sold on the 10x10 tarp that excels at a multitude of origami type set ups with the tent configuration as my all time favorite.

Thanks for sharing this video. That tarp looks really nice. I bet it would be superb for cold weather. It would also be nice for generating some rain-free space, more so than the traditional, diamond-shaped rainfly. This would make it much more bearable to take extended shelter during a downpour.

When I leave a release loop (you called it a slip loop) on a line, I like to put a stick through it and cinch it down. That way if it snags on something, it isn't accidentally released.

Nice review Corporeal. I researched options for hammock tarps a fair bit and this has been my dream tarp for a while. I plan to upgrade to it eventually. A lot of commenters poopooing your review. Ignore them, you did a good job and are sharing your knowledge for free. This is a top of the line tarp, with top of the line materials, the raw materials are expensive and it requires more labor than other tarps. It’s ultra wide, and provides the best 360 degrees storm coverage. That’s why it’s as expensive as it is. But it is worth it. It’s not for everyone, it for those that can afford the best and want the best. People who love the outdoors and do long distances or those who have bad knees or backs etc will buy these ultralight products because it’s worth the weight savings to them.
Also, not a big deal but I believe they are called Hammock Gear, or HG for short, not HG Hammocks.
    Thanks for sharing.

The Corporal missed his calling as a Sears catalogue model. I recently discovered that duct tape only sort of sticks to parchment paper but doesnt lose its stickiness while doing so. I have also discovered that there is a fine line between "edc" bag and "kidnapping hobbyist" kit. I think the difference is the granola bars.

Tarps of this design are more spacious when the side panels are guy lined up and out. The result is an expanded interior with more space between you and the potentially wet tarp. It also improves air flow and tends to reduce humidity inside the tarp.

Well, great vid. It stows away smaller than a lot of mess kits. Definitely saves space in the ‘ol Alice pack! But what a price tag! You should check out the free soldier tarp. It packs down about as small and even with an aftermarket snake skin, you have enough left over for a couple or 3 fine bottles of aged bourbon!
Just a suggestion 🤔 one old vet to another. It will do all you showed here, you should check it out!

I am always interested in the development of materials for the bushcraft/hiking/camping folk. Being associated with Synthetic slings for years, they come and go. Cubin fibers seem interesting. The first is that outrageous price. Comparable to that Cubin Ultralight Whiz Bag Fandango shelter. A couple more pounds and a hellava lot less money, enter the Super Shelter and its mods. For the gram weenies the cubin would be the way to go.
Anyway maybe Dupont is coming out with another fabric to beat the Cubin. Who knows. I guess if your pounding 50 mile days, the Cubin would be your pick.
Thanks again amigo for another good one
    Peace from Texas

My Aqua Quest Safari 10X10 weighs 1.6lbs versus 7.8oz, a savings of 9.2oz. That's amazing. However, the cost factor is quite prohibitive for the common man's wallet. That's $215 more to save 9.2oz.. I realize you get what you pay for...you just go through your pros and cons list and on occasion you have to bite the bullet. As I get deeper into my overlander vehicle conversion I'm running into a "wall" of exorbitant prices. I have an entire Composition book full of pros and cons lists. Great review Corporal Kelley!

Long time hammock camper here. Just a tip for those who haven’t used a tarp like this: if using with a hammock there’s rarely a need to stake so low. Just hang your hammock and tarp at your normal heights. The hammock will be safely tucked up under the tarp. The doors simply block the openings on either end of a regular setup.

Just so folks know, dyneema fabric runs about $30-40 per yard and is relatively difficult to sew. So, HammockGear's pricing on this is not all that outrageous. Now whether or not it is worth it to you is a personal decision. If you are a young buck that likes to haul a 60 pound pack including a heavy tarp, go ahead and rock on. I would rather have my 25 pound pack (total including food and water) for a 5-day trip and go that route. That means I will likely have to spend more on good lightweight gear, but that is my choice and one that I choose often. For the record, I dont have one of these tarps, but I have been looking at them a lot lately.

The 'cost' of quality can't be overstated, just as the 'cost' of bad quality can't be understated. Afterall in the service one's rifle is made by the lowest bidder and lives depend on it. So the same for the hard charging hikers, etc. Over the years the expense is averaged out and it becomes less expensive by the year or number of camping days. In short, a better value in the long term.

Nice review I'm still out on what I want they are all pricey for what they are ,I was looking at the warbonnet superfly which was around 270. After customizing .thought man I can get cubin fiber for that Jack it was a little higher looked at material 18$ for a half yd I needed 8 so they really only have a little over 100$ in labor .very worth it for quality professional work

If you like hiking up and over 11000 foot mountains like I do for a number of years you will likely work your way up to Dyneema. I heard it was originally used for racing yacht sails.

That is a great product, but for $350 for a tarp is ridiculous, would rather carry a blue tarp from Harbor Freight.

@@phillipparker8947 its worth it if you're a thru hiker that literally cuts their toothbrush in half to save a few GRAMS of weight. $350 is actually pretty cheap for dyneema, but yeah its certainly not something id expect the average once every 5 years camper to buy.

The primary benefit of a tarp is it allows you shelter without isolating from your surroundings like a tent does.

I'm a fan of Dyneema/ cuban fiber. I have a Z-Packs Duplex tent in camo that is made from Dyneema and it is quite a nice tent that is pretty light. Mine being camo is a little less see-thru than your tarp but it is still somewhat see through. I was recently gifted a hammock, and am going to look for a set up to go along with it. I think I will still mostly backpack with my tent setup, but after trying a hammock, I find I do like it too. Not sure if I want to spend the quite so much on a secondary setup, so I'll probably go with a silpoly tarp for my hammock

You have the tarp inside out! Use the 4 middle pole supports and give yourself more room inside. Look it up online. Works great for me.

This really looks interesting. Wonder about puncture resistance and a bit concerned about the see-through nature of the fabric. Would love to try it, but to be honest, since my long-distance trekking and camping days are now pretty much over, $315 for a tarp could be perceived as grounds for divorce.

Steven Hobbs from what I’ve read whilst they have great tensile strength they don’t have super great puncture resistance (depends on the thickness of DCF), nor do they have great abrasion resistance. But it’s highly waterproof and very light.
