- Bathroom ceiling fan roof damper vent installation. Installing a Broan RVK1A roof vent to eliminate the moisture going into the attic coming from the bathroom ceiling fan. It is important to keep moisture out of the attic not dump it into it. Moisture in your attic can lead to mold mildew and rotting out your roof decking.

I love that ladder it is my go-to ladder! I use it everyday. I would note try not to get it muddy because it makes it harder to retract and extend.

I agree, always use insulated flex so that you eliminate all the problems that he was talking about with condensation on the duct work inside the attic.

What are the differences between this flat kind and the curved shaped type?
Have you had any issues with your collapsable ladder? I was eager to buy one after seeing this video but there were several people who posted on Amazon that their ladders had collapsed on them due to the plastic rings breaking and they fell to the ground or got stuck on their roofs.
I do have a question how do you come up with an estimate? Can you make a video on that ? How much you charge to shingle, take garbage, etccc ??

I have a vent like that already installed in my roof. What is the adapter that twists into the vent called. Mine dosen't have one of those and I'm looking to vent an exhaust to it. Thanks

What happened to six inch steps that’s but with them vent I always have a full shingle under the vent then the sides don’t matter but the around the top you want a full shingle I leave I don’t put nails in the exposed area either but that’s what that foam double stick foam thing in the kit is for I would t use that either though I’m old school and like to do it my way because then I k ow I won’t get a call back hood work though keep it up I ordered on for my metal roof and I also ordered a pipe boot for my flu pipe and a cut pipe boot for my chimney stack and a boot for my shit stack with an extension kit and acouple mushroom tops then I’m venting my gables because I’m going over my old roof it’s a double wide mobile home
Absolutely love your videos but this vent is absolute garbage if you live where there's snow. It creates so much ice on your roof because the air coming out doesn't have a chance to properly evacuate so it creates condensation and melts the snow on the roof nearby the exhaust. You'd be surprised of how big an area it melts. I ended using longer pipe and going to gable end since I have a bungalow. Your explanation was bang on and perfect. How long ago were those shingles installed because you had no problems getting under them. When I installed that vent, my shingles (Owens Corning Duration) were 5 years old and I had a bitch of a time to get under them and I did it in the summer. In the spring I want to go and take that vent out since I'm now going thru gable end and I hate the thought of it.

Trying to figure out how to do mine. Just wondering, is there any downside of drilling a pilot hole from inside the attic where I know what to avoid? I can't guess the location like you did from feeling for the softness of the roof.
Absolutely not a problem to drill a pilot from the inside. I try to avoid hafting to go in the attic if I don't need to.
I will say just be cautious if you're near a Valley dormer etc that you're not going to drill a pilot into a voided area you can't access from the roof.

some of the cheaper ones don't last.
also Broans literature says that kit comes with a 4in to 3 in adapter....
what are they referring to(the adapter that goes on the vent)?
Duct tape is useless in the attic unless you want it to fail in less than a year. Better practice is to attach rigid ducting to that metal collar from inside the attic. Connect with sheet metal screws and seal with mastic and tape. If you can run rigid all the way to the fan that's the best. Also, if you don't seal the joint where the metal vent pipe twists into the fan hood moisture will leak out and get between the vent hood flanges and the roof and will wet the plywood. This will cause rot and mold.
Thanks for writing this. yeah 11 months after reply, but I just watched this video. I believe this kit comes with a foam sealer for that joint. Also, from reading, that metal tape is the proper tape to use as regular duct tape rots and falls apart?
@@clownchkn Yes, in the heat of the attic the glue on the tape dries up and turns to powder and the tape starts to leak. Good quality aluminum tape meant for sealing ducts is what is needed. A pail of mastic and a disposable paint brush will be cheaper for doing long seams. They both have their place.

anyone else notice the shingle overlay? Looks like 2-3" and staggard instead of running a step ?
No clue who installed this but yes it did not have enough offset.
A builder installed pvc pipe but ran it down to an elbow, turned 90° and ran it 18’. It filled with moisture at the elbow. It froze and built up till it cracked the pvc. Some inspectors either do t know what they are doing and shouldn’t or they get paid off. Lots of shoddy work in construction.
New construction is essentially garbage
I use a wire coat hanger in my drill and drill up and thru the shingles and leave the hanger poking thru then go up on the roof and find my hanger and cut my hole 🕳
Doesnt look like the shingles overlap too much, seems like an 1 inch at the most, NO GOOD! Should be 3 -4 inches.
How difficult is it with 2 layers of shingles? I bought 2 vents I need to add to the roof but I'm hesitant now and thinking about just hiring someone. I have done it before a long time ago.
You do it the same way you would with one layer. You only tuck it under the first layer. The only difference is you need to cut through the second layer to cut the deck and to get the pipe through. Cut the second layer before you cut the decking or it will give up your blade.

Why not seal the vent channels so they aren't ever an issue? Just load em up full of caulk or roofing cement imo
I think the hole you cut on the roof is too big.
Just to ask this??? That looks like a three inch vent pipe. So If i were doing this install I would use a three inch hole saw instead of you using a reciprocating saw. You get a lot better looking opening. Here I thought you always want to do a good job???? Here in cutting this opening you failed!!!

No. It should be fine. Any drops that do blow in during wind driven precipitation will dry out when the fan turns on. I’ve seen if it’s really bad roofers will install a flashing in front of the vent to redirect the rain.
I liked your video and I'm going to use all of your tips but removing all of those nails and work it from outside to make it only easier and not better, no reason to take those nails out and then hammer tons of nails down, that is compromising the integrity of the roof for sure, 2 minutes being in the dark hot attic (take a portable light with you!) worth it not to take all of those nails of and nail more back in and glue and patch, not a great idea at all.
not so sure code allows that vent to be that close to a stink pipe!
It does. Shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve seen it in my area. New homes with plumbing vents near bathroom vents.

Good video but;
You need an insulated duct for bathroom vent via attic, the one you used will accumulate moisture with time and clog airflow. Any duct via attic needs to be insulated, be it bathroom or dryer.
