Great video. The best technique for this topic.. Short and clear. Love it. Only comment. Exhaust pipes for range hoods need to be rigid duct. Also, I'm concern about condensation in the winter due to the lack of insulation. Inside the pipe will condensate a lot in the winter and might even leak inside the range hood.

For a better video on installing the vent cap watch "How to Vent a Bath Fan Through the Roof" on this old house channel. This is of course not a bath vent fan but the application of the cap is still the same. This installation is not ideal. Also we are required to only use hard smooth duct for the range vent... as grease can build up overtime on any time of flex vent and cause a fire or just general inefficiency of the range itself.
If bottom is caulked, it prevents any water [from condensation or other source of moisture] from properly existing out the bottom of the vent collar. Water will dam up and find its way to sub-roof/attic.
Nothing specials. Any type of screws for wood or metal with flat head will work. I was used Self-Piercing Lath Screws just because I have it already in my car. www.homedepot.com/s/Self-Piercing%2520Lath%2520Screws?NCNI-5

Very nice tutorial. Will this work in Chicago where it snows? I'm just worried that snow will bury the vent holes. Thanks in advance for responding. I subd to see more or your vids.
I’m in Michigan. Where my vent is located on the roof is an area that gets drifting so the snow can get quite deep. All the exhaust vent covers I looked at locally from the usual big box store were too short and would get buried in the snow. I got my vent from Ventilation Maximum in Quebec Canada, I’m close to the border so I just drove over to Ontario and picked it up at a local hardware store. It works great. You can probably order online.
In a colder climate you’ll want to insulate your ducting to prevent warm moist air from condensing when it hits cold attic air and then dripping back down into your fan. 👍🏻
Hey, Putting sealant on 3:20 on the bottom front part of the vent for condensation cause issues? I saw many videos where the bottom part is not glued to let it run down naturally. What are your thoughts? Glue the whole thing down or just the top/left/right sides to the roof?
I have a roof vent installed, the person who did it cut a 6.75 in square hole in the decking. What do you recommend the best way to attach the 6" vent tube to the square hole? What is do you call that metal strip you used at the end of your video to secure the tube?
Same square hole was in roof plywood at customers house when they ask me to install a new microway. The Home Depot have a square metal plate with 5" or 6" hole. Here is a video and you can see this plate: ua-cam.com/video/uYJBzu5zqtk/v-deo.html
Thats not right, you are supposed to take the full shingle out above it and make the cut. That way you do not have the bow in the middle of the shingle when you slide the flapper vent in. Also, if installed correctly, you do not need to goop it like you did. Thats so much tar!
@@FixitAll "Didn't feel like it" is where all half-assed work comes from. Sealant will fail before the hard parts do, which is why it should never be the first line of defense.
