How I built an adjustable putting green for practice in the off season

  • I wanted a high end customizable practice area for putting and I could not find one on the market to buy, so I built my own. Here is a quick look at how I did it, just incase you would like to do something similar yourself. This putting deck has 4 floor mounted jacks and 8 air pump jacks not to mention built in LED lighting!

    Very clever! If you used linear actuators instead of jacks you could just have a few buttons on your wall instead of the drill.

      that could create some smooth breaks on the green

    This is an excellent setup, I will be trying my best to replicate this in my basement! Thank you for sharing!

    Great design! Couple questions. 1. Does the attached middle section run all the way from front to back? 2. Are the left and right sides attached by hinges on two sides (middle and to the hitting area)? 3. And you said in comments you would maybe change and use 3/4” plywood. Seems like this would not have the flex that 7/16” probably has which gives a smoother curve as opposed to just a slanted floor? Hope you get this, thanks!

      The floor is secured in an upside "T" shape where the hitting area is not adjustable. The corner floor sections are only attached by long hinges on the inside, allowing the outsides to tilt up. 3/4" would be more stable, but I get your point about allowing some flex. Mine has held up good with 7/16" and I have used it a lot, just creeks a little now from all the use. I probability could use a few more screws to fix, but it is not that bad.

    Great setup. Does the platform significantly increase the noise when hitting balls into the sim? Re-installing my sim in garage after moving. Interested in copying your design.

    This is a great build and thanks for showing it as give me ideas for the basement. Love the idea of the jacks. What type of air pump jack did you use? I like that being permanent underneath instead of cutting foam and having to install/remove it when you want to change things

      I just went with air jacks off amazon. Also, the hitting area is perminate on mine. The foam underneith is for shock as mats on concrete break down joints pretty fast. Thanks fpr the feedback!

    Awesome build mate. Quick question. How do you walk on it when a corner has been risen. How have you made it sturdy?

    • @scottloudon2787
      @scottloudon2787 10 місяців тому

      Good question- I have the holes in the end where the floor is lifted the most, so I never walk past the holes into the weakest corner. Standing in front of the hole (to get balls out) is almost directly on top of the jack's below so it is solid there.

    i am just seeing ur putting green idea. Wonderful indeed. I am looking to do something similar. Did you nail down the two side pieces of plywood that are adjustable? I likely wont adjust mine; just a right to left side and a left to right side.
    Also, did you use all 2x6 for perimeter and 2x4 for middle studs?
    Thanks in advance for you time.

    • @scottloudon2787
      @scottloudon2787 Рік тому

      Yes, 2x6 ends and 2x4 centers. I only screwed down the center floor board and the two side boards only attach with hinges so the outsides can lift. If you are going to make it flat, you can throw in some sand bags to add subtle breaks and make it awesome.

    Absolutely awesome! On the adjustable panels of the subfloor do you have to be careful walking over them or is there enough support? Are only the center sheets fastened with screws and is the turf secured to the plywood or free floating?

      @professionalgolfinstruction  Рік тому +1

      If you weigh over 200 lbs I would recomend 1/2" boards. If less the 7/16 should be fine. Mine is not 100% strong but it is enough to support me moving around on it just fine and I am 185 lbs.

    I love your video and would like to make the same adjustable putting green. Is it possible to acquire some more details about the number of floor panels you use. When the adjustable floor panel rises is there a gap between that panel and the floor panel that is screwed down? There doesn’t seem to be any bump between the screwed down panel and the panel that is raised up and I wonder how you achieved this nice transition?

      I used ling flat hinges. They sit flush with the boards. You can also make a space and flip them over as the small space will not show once you put the turf on. My turf is thicker than indoor/outdoor carpet too so it wont show little things like that. Good luck!

    Looks like this was posted a year ago. I’m going to start my indoor setup soon. About 10x10 area. Anything you would do different now?

    • @scottloudon2787

      It all depends on the level of players who will use it and the space it will be used in.
      If you have the space, use it.

    I am very interested in doing this and I may have more questions in the future, but do you know about how much this costs to build, thank you!!

    • @professionalgolfinstruction
      @professionalgolfinstruction  2 роки тому

      About $300 plus turf (this varies greatly based on quality). If I would do it again, I would use a 3/4" plywood/OSB for the floor so it maybe more with that upgrade.

    How did you install the air wedges under the turf and how far from the holes did you install them?

    • @scottloudon2787
      @scottloudon2787 Рік тому

      They just lay flat and I ran the hoses through the side rails and the bulbs are on the outside (before I put the cap on them).

    Do you have any issues with the turf creasing with using the air jacks or car jacks? Also I would love to have a schematic of this build

    Great looking setup, just wondering how your turf is fitted. Is it glued to the plywood floor

    • @professionalgolfinstruction
      @professionalgolfinstruction  Рік тому

      Thanks Craig, the company I bought the turf from (forever lawn) used a double sided tape around the edges (accept where the air pillows are).

      Sorry Rick, I did not make any when I built it. It is the same as any deck, but with the joists 8" apart.

  • @ScooterBateman
    @ScooterBateman 2 роки тому

    So the sub floor piece’s are not connected to each other?

    • @professionalgolfinstruction
      @professionalgolfinstruction  2 роки тому

      The hitting area is all connected to the joists and one another. The front has 2 pieces (left right and that are connected with hinges together, but not to the joists.

    • @professionalgolfinstruction
      @professionalgolfinstruction  Рік тому

      @Simon Blake the 2 side floor boards are connected to the center one with long hinges. That way they can lift on the outside to create the angle. The center floor board is screwed down to the floor joists to it will not slide when the outside floor boards lift.
