  • Marshall Headphones On the Road Season 3, Episode 1
JESSE MEETS HIS HERO, BILL WARD
    Los Angeles, California
Jesse decides that for his next rock 'n' roll road trip he wants to investigate his first musical love -- the original, authentic heavy metal sound from the UK, as pioneered by his heroes Black Sabbath in the 1970s. Before he sets off on his journey of discovery, Jesse invites one of his biggest musical idols and inspirations, Bill Ward, drummer of Black Sabbath, to meet him at his rehearsal space in LA. Jesse learns what it was like growing up in Birmingham, how Sabbath got together and changed rock history, and most importantly, gets some tips on where to go and who to meet on his trip to the UK. From the bands, and of course the roadies, to the journalists, the groupies, the designers and super-fans, Jesse endeavors to deduce why it all started in the UK, and in particular in the Midlands. He sets out to discover what made it different from everything that had been before, and why it has continued to influence musicians all over the world ever since.

as for the comments about Bills playing, he play's almost everyday depending on schedules , if you haven't heard Accountable Beasts then you won't know but Bill did most the drumming on there and the parts he didn't record himself he still wrote the parts. I'm tired of seeing people saying he's not able to play or not in good health, if you don't REALLY know then how can you spread lies ? this is why he is waiting for an apology to this day from Oz. every time I see a post like that I want to break my keyboard over your head. ... just sayin .. Bill is a great man probably one of the nicest of the original founding members you could ever meet.

5:22 I'm pretty sure they wrote and rehearsed material for the Paranoid album there. When he said "did our second album," I believe he means this, as it was recorded elsewhere.

hes older, playing drums like hes 19 at his age could kill him, drums are a workout if your playing with passion. singing and chilling playing guitar is totally different.

Greats Hard Rock bands from Birmingham:
Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, Witchfinder General, Quartz, Jameson Raid, Handsome Beasts... aarrrghhh - there must be dozen's of others I can't think of right now. When London was pissing around with punk and New Wave and New Romantic crap - Birmingham was breeding Heavy Rock into Heavy Metal ;-)

Im sorry but Black Sabbath was not even close to the first punk rock band. The Stooges, The Velvet Underground, The MC5 ,The New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers all literally laid the foundation for punk rock. Every punk rock band that followed after them was heavily influenced by those bands such as the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Dead Boys, the Damned, the Buzzcocks etc etc etc

I have one huge problem with this episode.
    Heavy Metal.
Why in the world does he keep referring to Black Sabbath as Heavy Metal? Or Heavy whatever?
They are Hard Rock ... period!
Sure, they have a heavy sound, but I do not know of anyone back in the '70s who called them Heavy Metal.
Only someone who wasn't old enough to listen to Black Sabbath in the '70s would keep bringing up the Heavy this or Heavy that question.
It's not a question! They are Hard Rock. Case Closed.
    Otherwise awesome episode :-)
    Sabbath rulez!

You're misled. Either you haven't listened to enough of their music to understand that it is in fact VERY heavy, or that you don't understand what constitutes heavy metal music. The coining of the word "heavy metal" literally came from people trying to find words to describe what Sabbath sounded like. Listen to tracks like Cornucopia, Black Sabbath, Electric Funeral, Under the Sun. Then come here and say that they aren't metal.
