They lived an off grid lifestyle in the mountains. They didn't just not pay their bills. It's totally legal and fine to live without electricity or running water, as long as you know what you're doing. It's not the same as someone living in town and not paying their bills so their electric and water gets shut off. If you don't pay your bills and your NYSEG/water gets turned off, you're putting your kids in danger. People who live off grid have wood stoves and access to well or river water. If someone doesn't pay their bills that's an indication something is wrong with their ability to parent, hence why CPS would get involved. These situations are not the same. His adoptive parents are evil but living off the grid is the least of their issues.

    • @kellylavlin7463

Exactly. Biological parents would have their children removed but it's ok for adoptive parents.

heck my friend was not allowed to adopt because her house was under renos that were nearly finished but thing like the strips of flooring between areas were not done and a basement stairs handrail had to be put in.
she was told her home was inappropriate as it stood and the worker would not consider her for adopting even the age range she wanted which was into school years. this was a very old home in the city with all mod cons just a completely renoed from wiring through plumbing and roof.

Jaliek was from the town next to me. Chief Bell died late last year and I know his biggest regret was not finding out what happened to Jaliek. Every year he conducted a search or media outreach. I know his heart broke for Jaliek. His adopted parents are horrible people and should have the rest of their kids taken away. Kerr definitely did something to Jaliek. I hope someday the truth about Jaliek comes out and they find him.

It was such a heartbreaking story. I believe Kerr killed him that night when he supposedly run away. It makes me so angry and sad that they couldn't do anything to prove that. He was just an innocent boy and the system and the people around him failed to protect him. RIP beautiful boy

It's really too bad that Kerr's parents couldn't have been the ones to originally adopt Jaliek, they seem upstanding people - unlike Kerr and his wife, who seem like pieces of trash and no doubt killed the boy. I'm with the other comments - how on earth did these two people ever get to adopt foster kids wit no running light, plumbing or water??

    • @Presca1

Thats true, but Abortion is not an option, well it is but its objectively evil and people need to admit what it is, child mutilation/murder, that being said yes the poor kid had two shit scum biological parents, and wasn't able to find the right fit with foster familys with the later one likely ending up being a outright scummy killer.Adoptions also need better vetting.

Jaliek's story makes me SO mad. So many people failed him and gave up on him and abandoned him when things got hard. He was just seen as a way to make money or as a "look at what a good person i am for looking after this child" status symbol. Jaliek deserved better.

This angers me so much. His mom wasn't able to raise him so he was put through foster care but how on earth was the family he was adopted by not properly screened?
The Kerr's sound very dysfunctional from the start, having all the children sleep in the same bed for example. They should never have been allowed to adopt in the first place.
Perhaps the children were being sexually abused and they didn't want to be caught and that's why they got rid of Jelik before he could get help...
      Hope one day justice happens

Jaliek was basically placed in a home where he was treated as badly as those children found in California. The adopted parents will end up in jail some day, and everyone will say 'that should have happened years ago'.... This IS the fault of the system (social work, foster care).
These people should never have had any children in their home, the fact that they did is the fault of the state of New York.
I am in no way excusing the behavior of the adopted parents or saying that these people don't deserve a jail sentence, but the state is complicit in this issue.

I agree, however the state didn't help at all here. Telling a desperate family that they can't reverse the adoption because they can't handle a child sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. As a current foster parent, I wonder about all the negative comments about foster parents. We are completely vetted, finger printed, and evaluated before being certified. Although I dont agree with all DCS regulations required of us, I realize that the many policies and rules come from past experiences. The foster parents in our area seem to be wonderful people. Just saying. The good foster parents dont get a lot of publicity. It is not "newsworthy".

They do all that and still put kids in unfit homes with terrible people and then seem to miss all the signs their being neglected, treated terribly, or abused til the kid ends up like jaliek (missing and never found) or dead, so adoptive services and cps need to do better, like nurses and doctors you need people in these positions who care cause if they don’t, they end up lacking care compassion empathy and being negligent in where they place these kids, yes there’s great foster parents out there and yes that should be recognized but because of all the negativity of foster homes/parents the good gets overshadowed cause the negative outweighs the positive unfortunately, too many people in the foster system don’t care and hence why so many kids are failed

Story 1 is really interesting. I would like to know what was written on the letter. And if the the person that wrote it is not a suspect or person if interest, then they should really come forward. And why wait 34 years to write the letter? This leaves me to believe that the writer is related or very close to the person he/she is might be talking about.

that adoptive family is pathetic. that man killed him. And the last story sounds like a possible case of Dissociative fugue, which is apparently rare, but I heard of someone who did have it that I know. It's basically a rare psychological problem where the person gets amnesia that can last a day to weeks to months. A lot of times they end up traveling miles away and they don't remember what happened.

Stories like Jaliek's are truly tragic. As someone finishing up her PhD in psychology, my main work is with children who, due to psychological/biological conditions, exhibit significant behavior problems or emotional distress. Children like Jaliek need continued patience and compassion, and therapy and behavior support are also so, SO helpful. Children with special needs are also statistically more vulnerable to abuse by others - especially caregivers. Please everyone, be aware of situations like these and watch out for the safety of children who might be at risk for this kind of treatment. These stories really frustrate me and make me so angry with the foster care system (which historically sucks anyways). Ugh.

Miss kids case does seem to point in the direction of foul play. The fact that miss kid did not want anyone to know the identity of this individual makes me think he was very controlling and premeditated the crime if in fact there was one. This individual also might have forced her to take all the money in cash and might have even been caught on camera. Another thing is she said he was known to the family and they would all be surprised when they find out who he is. Which makes me believe he was not a person to be fond of.

Before all this happened steven lived a street away from my ex boyfriend (about 20 years ago) my ex told me on the 4th of July when he was a teenager he was shooting off fireworks during the day when steven came running out of nowhere at him and knocked him down yelling at him that his kids were sleeping. Everyone in town knows he did it, the guys creepy. He use to come into the store I worked and I always felt a rush of anxiety.

Oh my, Jeliek's so called adoptive parents are as evil as they are ridiculous. It might be funny if it wasnt so tragic! I mean have I missed something recently in our culture? Is running away to be with black people actually something kids are doing? Come on, its like the old childhood threat about running away to join the circus. I'm an adult with resources and transportation and I don't know how I'd run away to be with black people. I mean is there a location one could go and apply? It's ludicris that these so called 'parents' haven't been arrested and charged. Reverse the racial identies and say a black family had adopted a biracial boy who then disappeared following the same strange and suspicious behavior of Jeliek's adoptive parents. Then these hypothetical black parents say to the police well we think he left to go live with white people..? What? You can't tell me that those parents wouldn't have been charged convicted and sentenced long ago! These white parents need to be held accountable for their actions!

All of these cases are disturbing and tragic, but the final one, the disappearance of "Bunny" made me particularly sad because he was only three years younger than I was in 1978, and he could also have had such an interesting and happy life as I had these past 40 years, but this was denied him. The truck he stole was found abandoned in the woods - was that the last trace of Bunny that was ever found ? It always hits me when people go missing under mysterious circumstances in forests and woods, especially in National Parks. I am of course thinking down the "Missing 411" avenue, which you all most probably know of. Were Search & Rescue parties ever organised to scour the woods for any signs of Bunny ? The mysterious letter however may point in an entirely different direction, depending entirely upon the contents, which we of course do not know. I sincerely hope that the anonymous author will contact the police to put more light on the case, Bunny's relatives certainly deserve closure and information as to what really happened to Bunny all those years ago.

CPS should never lie to a foster parent like they did in Jaliek's case. Had they not lied that there was no legal avenue to reverse the adoption, his foster father may not have resorted to illegal means of getting Jeliek out of their life. Bureaucracy being governed by institutional incentives (try to get the parent to keep the kid at all costs) at its most tragic.
