That handbook was written nearly a decade ago and the landscape of products (low-poos especially) and ingredients has changed a lot since then. Lorraine herself has even changed some of her opinions since she published it. Still lots of fantastic advise, and a great foundation, but certainly not gospel. Additionally, Lorraine Massey separated from the Devacurl brand and Devachan salons many years ago so they don't strictly follow her method anymore even though she was integral in the foundation of both. She now has a different salon she runs and a new line of simplified curly hair and grey hair products.

Thank you. It was thanks to you and Penny Tovar that I began to read and understand the ingredient lists. I'd thought using products from 'natural' stores (PCC/ Whole foods) would grant me the results I was looking for. BC of you two, I switched to Shea Moisture products and have been watching my hair slowly transform from frizzy damage to type 2 b/c, 3a. Loraine Massey hasn't had control of Deva Curl for a very long time. I think the handbook is an amazing start when you have no idea how to take care of your hair but you gotta play around with what works for you.
I went to a Deva Salon wanting a Diva cut. As she looked at my hair she said I would have to come back becuase I was using the "not allowed" products. I kind of felt insulted. She told me the products I couldn't use for a couple of days after she already scheduled the appointment. One of those ingredients was Creams/Butters. I thought to myself "Do you know what my hair would look like if I didn't use creams or butter?"..... I did not make the appointment, and my hairs doing just fine. 😏
Shannon Nicole sw they want your curls to be natural because waxes weigh them down and change the pattern or elongate them and it will interfere with the haircut because they cut each curl dry. It wasn’t an insult , she definitely should have explained why.
I got a horrible Devs curl cut at the beginning of March and when I let her know with photos why I was unhappy, she told me I would need to wait a month and let it grow out before she would "happily" fix it "for you." I liked the "for you" part in addition to the happily part. She also said I asked you to come in with second day hair and I feel like saying b**** I didn't have time to wash my hair and get it just so, I came in with it looking like it usually looks. I call that a deflection. Anyway, I said I'm not living with this hair for a month! and I started fixing it myself and then I asked for a refund and I'm still waiting. Deva my arse
Shannon Nicole sw I know im late, but its clear that Deva curl want their client to come to the salon with « naked » hair because it will be so much easier to have an amazing before & after picture comparaison and because you will think that they did a better job that they did since you came with frizzy matted hair
I will forever be grateful for the cgm because I had absolutely NO idea how to take care of my hair until I found a group on Facebook. It helped me sooo much, but I do not follow the rules to a T. I think it’s a great method, but everyone should do what works for them. Thanks for being so honest. Love your videos ❤️
My hair didn’t like Deva Curl. It felt SO dry, almost like hay. So now I use the Not Your Mother’s gardenia flower and mango butter curl defining shampoo and conditioner. I love it! And it’s free of all of the bad stuff
Girl, ain’t nobody got time to follow the CGM to the letter!!! 😂 I agree 100% w you. We all gotta do what works for our own hair! No two people in the world are exactly the same, why should hair be different? 🤷🏻♀️💜 Love your curls, ladies! Listen to them and be patient! 💆🏻♀️
With all the curly girl tips and tricks and "laws" going around out there, it is so great to have you here saying it's OK to just try to avoid harmful stuff and do what works best for YOU. Thank you so much for the alcohol ingredient tips! I was also surprised how much detail the book lacked with ingredients!
LOL, So I see you've met the CG police! They can be a little, um, abrasive. I love this video. It really explains a lot. I think your videos are an excellent supplement to the CGM. It was because of you, I committed to weekly deep conditioning and it really made a difference in my hair as I transitioned. Like you, I do not follow the CGM strictly (I love a good sulfate cleanser once a month.) But I do try to avoid all the other ingredients mentioned here including petroleum(mineral oil) and petroleum by-products like the isoparaffin NYM uses in their curl cream. I was so disappointed with NYM when they released a line of products dedicated to curls with ingredients many curly girls try to avoid. They listened to us and reformulated the mousse. Here's hoping they will one day reformulate the curl cream. Thank you for your wonderful content! You are the best!!!
@@goldenstar8406 Hi! C13-14 Isoparaffin. C13-14 Isoparaffin is a mixture of hydrocarbons (mineral oils) derived from petroleum. Petroleum-based products will cause the hair to shine, but will not allow the hair to be effectively moisturized and can lead to dryness and breakage.
Bee is killing me with those glasses and the megahorn!! lmao!!! BianceRenee keeps it entertaining and informative :) You go ahead drop that knowledge gurrrllll!!!!
I just follow the "what my hair likes" method!!👊🏽.If my hair loves it I use it...if it doesnt I don't use it again. I listen to my own curls...and you!!😘
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU FOR THIS!!!!! I have been trying to follow the CGM for about 5 months now. Some things I was already doing due to my own trial and error. Trying to follow that book is almost impossible. There just isn't enough information in it. You will go bankrupt trying to find the right products. Everyone's hair is different & needs different things. I'm still having so much trouble figuring out my own. I thought I was doing great & sticking to the CGM pretty good just to find out I was unintentionally breaking so many rules. It's time consuming & expensive and unfortunately I'm having more bad hair days than good. It's an everyday struggle not to just completely shave my head. Seriously. Then out of the blue I have a good hair day and it's absolutely perfect. I'm telling you, the struggle is real. Anyway, thank you so much for this video you actually just clarified many things for me.
IndiaBatson hi beautiful blondie, would you happen to know if the wax In the Maui moisture Shea butter hair mask can be washed out with sulfate free shampoo? 🤷🏼♀️ I’ve looking into and can’t find the answer. I bought because both of you chicas tried it & like it then I found out about the wax.
@@Tabatha437 maui worked for me for a couple of weeks and I was using cantu shampoo to wash which has sulfates. However it really started to build up and my hair was so sticky and frizzy so I stopped using maui Hope that helps
😂😂 this was great! I don’t strictly follow the cg method either. I even have a couple of products with silicones that I use in moderation and it never causes any issues for my hair. I just use what works for me🤷🏼♀️
I started the curly girl method a few months ago because I wanted to be able to enjoy my natural texture and my hair to be a little less high maintenance than when I was straightening it all the time... And these reasons are the exact same why I stopped using the curly girl method!! My transitionning hair was getting a frizzy mess, and the different rules to follow was just giving me so much more work than before! Now I follow the 'do what the hell I feel like doing" method and it works wonders for me 😉
HAHAHA OMG you're hilarious, I was cracking up at this video. I'm at the beginning of this wavy curly transformation and your videos are the first ones I watched to learn more about what I should be doing. I love this video because there's so many 'rules' and its like who has time for all that....give me what works and gets me out the door in the morning. I have fine wavy/curly 2c/3a hair and so many of your *Bianca Renee approved!* products have worked really well for me too. Keep it up! :)
I don’t follow the CG method 100% either. I think it’s a good starting point, but you can alter it to work for your hair. Thanks so much for making this video, Bianca! You were the first UA-cam curly girl that I came across and inspired me to start taking better care of my curls! ❤️
I go to a DevaCurl stylist for my haircuts and she has this book in her waiting area! I skimmed through it and it definitely has some good advice! but I wouldn't ever buy it, most of the same stuff is online
Back before I did the research on how to grow my hair, I was washing it almost every day and usually using Pantene. I had this one patch of hair that always felt almost sticky and just weird. I didn't realize then that it was wax buildup! I honestly thought there was something wrong with me! After I learned about all the bad things to avoid and really started taking care of my hair, that buildup went away pretty quickly. If not for YT and channels like yours, I'd probably still be washing and blow drying, then flatironing every day. Seriously, you girls saved my hair!
I have just VERY recently decided I wanted to work on my curls and bring that back to life and I found this video extremely helpful!! Thank you so much! 😍
Omg, I’ve known from the beginning some of the products you used were not CG approved but I stayed for your personality and curl knowledge. In fact, it was your channel that inspired me to give up silicones, sulfates, and parabens so my curls can live their best life. The CG method is just too much effort lol. Besides that curl talk curl cream is my holy grail product for the moment. I absolutely love it. Just keep doing you.
Same! I don't need to follow any specific method, as it's too restrictive. The natural black hair community is what helped me learn about my hair, and as well as curly hair stylists, women like you, and my own experimentation. Rather just learn from different methods and do my own thing.
Bianca, I just wanted to say THANK YOU!! I‘m on a healthy hair journey and I try to recover from damage & you helped me SO SO MUCH. Thanks to you most of my curls are thriving again and I‘m feeling confident to wear my hair out again after a year of constantly hiding it in a ponytail, only 6 months after starting my journey. I don‘t know if I‘d be as far as I am know without your vids. I‘m so grateful & ily!! 💖💗
I will follow you & your Bianca Renee approved products forever! Lorraine did bring us the wonderful CG method, but I don't follow it strictly & my hair is still getting curlier every day! I think sulfates & cones are the main ones I care about excluding. Thanks for your honesty, great video as usual!
I Love you Bianca Renee because you're so adorable, honest and FUNNY! Loved your expose on the DevaCurl contradictions--adorably and always with humor (like the song, "just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down!"). The takeaway for me with this video is that although I won't get the book, I WILL continue watching Bianca Renee videos because I learn so much about the "curly girl" method, trust your knowledgable opinion and can always get a good laugh while I'm learning all that good information on how to get the most popping' curls! Thank YOU and keep up the GREAT WORK! Ms. ECstreet :)
I bought the book and didn’t feel like I got enough info. Found you and have since learned soooooo much from your videos. My curls are healthy and popin! I also get a DivaCut regularly. I’ll just stick to your vids from now on! Thanks girl!!!
good point! It's totally self understanding - at least for me - if something WORKS on hair ? Go for it! Even if isn't 100% CG. I follow Miss Bianca Method ;) greetings from Poland!
It’s not really. If I recall you co-washed and then used a gel. It was pretty easy. It’s been years since I wore my hair curly and today I watch all these “new” curlies and I can’t believe the amount of products they put in their hair! 😳
Hey, Bianca Renee! Thanks for this great video! I’m a newbie CG & am just starting my journey. I read the CG Handbook and loved the info about curl types and techniques. However, it did seem kind of strict with a LOT of do’s & don’ts. I’m 65 and have always been kind of a rebel. I truly cannot commit to NEVER having my hair blown dry straight again. I was sort of feeling like a bad CG until I saw your videos and several with similar content. Hair should be fun, a way to self-express and not a stressor. That being said, there are things to make hair more healthy which is a win/win without giving up everything and putting your hair in a convent. Thanks again & I’ll be watching you as I walk down the Swirly Road to the Land of Curlz. 💋
Thank you so much for this! I'm in my 2nd week of following the CGM, and to be honest I was a little overwhelmed with all the "rules", particularly about colouring, considering that my highlights are something I'm not willing to part with. I now know that I'll just have to give my hair some extra TLC and speak to my stylist about how to be more gentle with his foiling technique. Considering I washed, conditioned and then pulled it up in a bun 24/7, I'm pretty sure I'll see some great results anyway. Thanks again!
Hmm that was interesting.. maybe the book needs to be updated to be more specific. Everything I know I’ve learned from watching your videos so thanks for doing the research to make it easier for us curly girls👍🏻
This was an excellent video. While I have coilier hair than you and probably would use different products, just the sheer academic and informative nature of your videos has me a hooked & now a subscriber. I have about 10 pages of notes and have (o.d.'ed) watched your videos for 5 days now feeling like I need to catch up on how to take care of my natural hair. Thx
I am CG and I figured you weren't by one or 2 products you have suggested but that does not mean I haven't learned SO SO SO much from you! You have been way more help, especially the deep conditioner challenge. That saved my hair's life. You the best boo😍
The video was hilarious. I read the Curly Girl Handbook three years ago when I was transitioning, I needed all the help I could get. But I do not follow the Curly Girl Method. I learned a lot from the book and took what I thought was the best suggestions for me. I also got a lot of info my UA-cam influencers such as yourself, whom I have been watching for at least two years. You added for me what the book couldn't. Thank you BianceRenee!
I absolutely LOATHE Deva Curl products. Well, my HAIR loathes Deva Curl. Those products damn near destroyed my hair. Im protein sensitive and the Deva Curl line is LOADED with protein. C13-14 isoparaffin is not recommended because its a petroleum product. If you are not using sulfates, its difficult to cleanse it away because its not water soluble. It needs a surfactant to break it down. Same thing for all waxes. They are not water soluble.
When I first started my curly hair journey, my cousin recommended this book to me. I bought it, read it and learned a lottttt. Did I follow it 100%, no. I agree with you. It has a lot of positive information, but I believe it's more of a guideline or suggestion than this is how to take care of your curls. If a product is working for you, keep using it, if not, stop, and look for products that will. I follow your method for sure 💜
Haha I wished I could show you the screenshot I took from the bad & good alcohol list 😂 i really followed your instructions & waited the right time when you go cute and shot it 😁
Thank you Bianca! You're one of the few curly hair gurus who still gets "sciencey" with product ingredients and I appreciate it. I'm a geek so porosity, product ph balance strip testing, etc., was my thing. I've also done alot of research, made DIY's, watched UA-cam videos, read books, my introducion was The Science of Black Hair by Audrey Davis Sivasothy, participate in forums and Facebook groups and on and on. I've never read Lorraine Massey's book either and am guilty of playing in the sulfate and silicone ponds every now and again because I know what I'm doing. I agree with you that books and information available are guides, not the Bible. You owe me nothing, keep doing what you're doing. You have a great spirit and I enjoy your content. 👍🏽
So I refuse to use just my fingers..but follow everything else, that I know of lol But then again, I think they're against gel and that's the only thing that will tame my frizz.
I'm here for the Bianca Renee Method! Woot! Thanks girl for the curl info... I should've started taking better care of my hair a loooooong time ago, but never learned how. I appreciate your insight, wit, and experience.
Lorraine Massey sold her company a few years ago. The styling cream is a product that didn’t exist when she controlled the company. Love you Bianca Renee!!
Girl!! Your glasses! Whoo! Look amazing on you!!... but thank you for pointing out the contradictions. Also thank you for your videos bc honestly i also have never read the book. I learned about my curls just from you. So thank you!!!!!!
Bianca made me laugh so hard when she was like "wait wait let get cute first before you take the picture" the she posed LMAOOO her smile was cute thoooo :)
When I started my natural hair journey last year the first thing I heard of was the curly girl method. I was so confused by it that I just never followed it and it seems to work for me, just doing my own thing. Of course influenced by Bianca Renee today 🙌🏽❤️
Lorraine Massey started Deva Curl products but through the journey the others in the company started deviating from her recommendations, this is part of the reason why she broke away from DC and now has her own line that sticks to strictly what she recommends- see curlyworldllc in IG for more info💜
I bought the book about three years ago. It was an eye opener to me because I never realized there was a curly world out there. My hair is much curlier now. I learned from the book but learned much more from people on you tube, including Bianca Renee. I usually learn about something then do what works for me so I don’t follow all the CG rules. The first rule to go was cowashing. I use a wide tooth comb, never use heat but just because I am usually in a rush and blow drying seems like it would take too long. I think most people don’t follow all the CG rules. We do what works for our hair and our life.💕
The are a lot of ingredients that don’t sound like what they are, like paraffin (think paraffin wax), same with carnuba wax (also goes by another name that is in almost all the Maui moisture products) and same with a silicone known as silantrol or something in the Shea moisture products. I suggest looking at sciency-hair blog. There are also different chains of ingredients which determine if they are water soluble, water dispersible, or insoluble, etc. Or ingredients that can be washed out with other combined ingredients. Bad news is you have to wash with sulfate most of the time (or a combo of a couple other sulfate free ingredients) to get the waxes and silicones off.
I've been natural 2.5 years and i never followed the cg method, i do however follow the Bianca Renee Method and my hair is flourishing lol if it aint broke y fix it 😋
Here I am with hair/curls that are nothing like yours binge watching your videos anyway because you are so adorable and entertaining, not to mention informative. Thank you!
Excellent Advice!!! I am just now really digging in and figuring out how to get the best of my curls. I was not born curly, but as the years have passed and children birthed, I somehow got the curls - and some of the info is too much and overwhelming, I LOVE your take on it - exactly how I feel. People ask me if I follow it, and and I just have to say - ‘No, but I have learned so much from the concept, method, advice from others. I basically take away what I’m willing to do and do the things that work for my hair. It’s a great jump off point.’
wonderful video! I am new to the whole CG method and am so overwhelmed......not anymore....thank you for being so educational and having a wonderful sense of humor, especially for us newbies!
For initial transitioning it is great but it really depends on your curl type. I could see a difference in my hair for the better following CGM. My first forays of non-sulfate or non-silicone was DevaCurl and unfortunately it did not agree with my hair, I started shedding more than usual so I stop and had a big chop. From then on I still continued with CGM and my hair started growing healthier however all these good products has started giving me build-up. I have decided to take few tips from CGM but that's it, I used stylers, gel, curling cream and combing my curls. I'm 1 and half year into transitioning and I decided to use water-soluble silicone shampoo for proper scalp cleansing.
I'm doing my best to follow the book, but like you so poignantly mentioned, the book's rules are not 100% specific on ingredients. I also didn't know about the isoparaffin until very recently. I have heard the book pre-dates a lot of the products in the Deva line, and the early products followed the method. Now, I heard that Lorraine Massey isn't a part of the product R&D any more. This might be why "her" products now have "avoid" ingredients in them. I'll still watch every video and follow you on IG. Promise!
Girl same the CG method is literally the Vegan Diet for haircare! It’s too limited and has a one size fits all approach that limits people’s hair potential. Check out the Curl Ninja too! She’s a licensed cosmetologist who has great input in porosity and ph levels from her own experiences doing many wash n gos!

Girl, ain’t nobody got time to follow the CGM to the letter!!! 😂
I agree 100% w you. We all gotta do what works for our own hair! No two people in the world are exactly the same, why should hair be different? 🤷🏻♀️💜
Love your curls, ladies! Listen to them and be patient! 💆🏻♀️
Watching a video of Bianca coming for Deva curl products was at the top of my list on my day off today, too funny!
Lmao!!! I technically was defending the products but saying how good they are even tho their naughty.... 😏🤣😋
Deidra Connor What’s in the curl cream?
@@goldenstar8406 Hi! C13-14 Isoparaffin. C13-14 Isoparaffin is a mixture of hydrocarbons (mineral oils) derived from petroleum. Petroleum-based products will cause the hair to shine, but will not allow the hair to be effectively moisturized and can lead to dryness and breakage.
Deidra Connor Thanks!
I noticed NYM products had stuff not good for the hair. I was disappointed since they have affordable products
@@KirschmanS Me too! They were one of the first curly products I bought. I still love the NYMN Linseed Chia Conditioner!
I don’t follow it. I follow u girl lol. Love love u and this video
🤣 awww thank you! I’m honored ❤️
I totally agree
Bee is killing me with those glasses and the megahorn!! lmao!!! BianceRenee keeps it entertaining and informative :) You go ahead drop that knowledge gurrrllll!!!!
I follow the BiancaRenee method and my hair looks great! Who needs the book when we have you to set us straight. Love your videos. ❤️
The Curly Girl Handbook was my first step into caring for my (What?!! I have curly hair?!!) curls. But, Girl, I 💗 💕 ❤️ your videos! Keep ‘em comin’!
I just follow the "what my hair likes" method!!👊🏽.If my hair loves it I use it...if it doesnt I don't use it again. I listen to my own curls...and you!!😘
Tbh same. I also don't follow it completely, lol. I'm trying to do better though! But I still probably will not full commit to it.
Coleen When you can’t go cg friendly because you broke af
Same i take some things from it but if i follow it completely... honey my hair would probs suck lol
I never followed the CG method, only the Bianca Renee method
Because she does not own deva curl anymore. she hasn't in almost a decade
@Flower8 she now owns curly world lcc
I’m dead 😭💀😂😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️❤️❤️
Me too! Lol
However it really started to build up and my hair was so sticky and frizzy so I stopped using maui
Hope that helps
Keep it up! :)
🗣 You are an OG! I love you & your amazing personality. Your hair is Flawless & you look so Beautiful 🤗😍.
Totally did the screenshots! 😂❤️
Amber Tanielle Murdoch I think that was my favorite part of the whole video 🤣🤣
I have just VERY recently decided I wanted to work on my curls and bring that back to life and I found this video extremely helpful!! Thank you so much! 😍
Funniest video of her ever😂😂😂the tone with the glasses reading the rules, the big bottles of alcohol, the best curly hair UA-camr ever❤️❤️
Literally going to the salon to start my curly hair journey and who comes up but the curly queen herself! It’s a sign😍😋😂
Alicia Smotherman good luck! Enjoy your curls!
Same! I don't need to follow any specific method, as it's too restrictive. The natural black hair community is what helped me learn about my hair, and as well as curly hair stylists, women like you, and my own experimentation. Rather just learn from different methods and do my own thing.
Notification squadddd!!!! My curls and I thank you for your advice and wisdom!!! 😘😘😘
I love you and your channel! ❤️ I have 4a and 4b curls. You have helped me so much with my hair. I never knew about deep conditioning before you🥰.
Lol so did I!!!!! Too funny!
I will follow you & your Bianca Renee approved products forever! Lorraine did bring us the wonderful CG method, but I don't follow it strictly & my hair is still getting curlier every day! I think sulfates & cones are the main ones I care about excluding. Thanks for your honesty, great video as usual!
Lol Bianca, when you posed showing the alcohol lists I died😂😂😂 and then took the screenshot the way you asked😂
Ms. ECstreet :)
Girl you got the snapchat filter glasses you love 😱🔥
Love this ❤️🔥
I bought the book and didn’t feel like I got enough info.
Just got home from work, already liked, and ready to watch!! 😁
Does anyone follow the curly girl method??? It’s a tad unrealistic.
I feel like the CG method is too limited, I do my own method😂
Ha Ha Ha the hair tie handcuffs had me dying!!!!!! Great video, great info, and great punch lines. 😂
Bianca Renee: “The Curly Girl Handbook”
My brain: “CuRlY gIrL tHe HaNdBoOk”
Me too lol
This was an excellent video. While I have coilier hair than you and probably would use different products, just the sheer academic and informative nature of your videos has me a hooked & now a subscriber. I have about 10 pages of notes and have (o.d.'ed) watched your videos for 5 days now feeling like I need to catch up on how to take care of my natural hair. Thx
When you literally retake the screenshot so that Bianca Renee looks cute in the screenshot cause thats what she asked you to do! 😘😘😘
🤣🤣🙌🏽
I am CG and I figured you weren't by one or 2 products you have suggested but that does not mean I haven't learned SO SO SO much from you! You have been way more help, especially the deep conditioner challenge. That saved my hair's life. You the best boo😍
i follow the BR method 😂😂 aand my hair is doing greattttt (im transitioning) just loving the results
@@paulinemoira8442 the creator of this vid
Same problem. God it made my hair dry and yucky and sticky and just a whole mess
That explains why my hair feels weird and weighed down when I use the NYM curl talk cream. lol
You're the best...the cutest...the funniest...most fun to watch. And the most informative!
I mean....who is ready for a Bianca Renee curly hair product line to come out cuz...i know i am!!
Lorraine Massey sold her company a few years ago. The styling cream is a product that didn’t exist when she controlled the company. Love you Bianca Renee!!
I’m sorry but when she brought out the vodka it had me freaking WHEEZING
🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️
Thanks Bianca because you already know i don't have the time to do research. I love you!
I think the owner of Devacurl changed and the ingredients also changed-- not sure tho
We do what works for our hair and our life.💕
BiancaRenee Approved 👍
Bianca: it means that I BiancaRenee ....
APPROVED 👍
ME: makes sense 🤔
Thank you!
*thank you for being so honest and real with us on your thoughts💖*
Excellent Advice!!! I am just now really digging in and figuring out how to get the best of my curls. I was not born curly, but as the years have passed and children birthed, I somehow got the curls - and some of the info is too much and overwhelming, I LOVE your take on it - exactly how I feel. People ask me if I follow it, and and I just have to say - ‘No, but I have learned so much from the concept, method, advice from others. I basically take away what I’m willing to do and do the things that work for my hair. It’s a great jump off point.’
When she had the bad alcohols up and she said “hold on, wait till I get cute” had me laughing so hard 😂😂
wonderful video!
Promise!
Thank God, finally a well balanced review of CGM. My clients act as if they're part of an occult so I'll now keep this link close by to send them.
Frances Keller Couldn’t agree more with this comment. Ever since I found curl ninja I stopped following the CG method altogether
brown knuckles Me too literally. It’s too one size fits all and just very extra
Someone finally says it! never cared much for the curly girl method. Only thing I faithfully was avoiding sulfates, etc
