I hate how the internet has come to a point where people think it’s necessary to give their opinions on others doing what’s comfortable for them and their lifestyle. You don’t owe anyone an explanation, your hair looks fantastic!!! 🤗
Hi, I too had similar experiences growing up half Asian in predominantly white Quebec. My hair once was stick straight is now a type 2 B wave. I’ve learned to live with it using a partial curly girl method. Now I’m tired of it and want to try a 90s layering and styling it with a blowout with Velcro rollers but scared to damage my healthy hair.
I just wanted to say I'm so thankful to you guys for being so open to listening when I get honest with y'all. It's not easy for me to talk about certain topics because of my past but I wanted to be here in case anyone's been through something similar. I feel this deeply in my soul: There's nothing wrong with your hair just the way it is. If you are curious about the Curl Girl Method here is my tutorial video of the process: ua-cam.com/video/CV_DPDJYZIk/v-deo.html
I have textured hair (I'm half Egyptian), my curls are mostly about between a silver dollar and a quarter in diameter with some that are about a nickel. I have had bad dandruff since I was born and trying curly girl only made that much worse. After watching the Manes by Mell channel I realized that the curly girl method was cultish and filled with logical fallacies (such as alcohol always being bad for hair no matter it's purpose). Now that I have found the right products I can now go for about a week without washing my hair without problems, style my hair in about 20 minutes, and do a "refresh" after I take my silk bonnet off in the morning in 1 to 5 minutes. Instead of hating my hair like I used to I LOVE my hair!
@@kessedihakim6222 Woww I’m glad you found what works for you!! True everyone’s an individual and you gotta find what you need. I’m very glad you wrote this comment it was very nice to read!! And congrats on that and finally loving your hair!! 😁
I have goosebumps - I also grew up in predominantly caucasian town, a girl I looked up to as my friend (beautiful, fine blond hair) also came up to me, felt my hair, and said "your hair feels like my dogs" and I remember it to this day - 20 years later. I wish I had youtube at that time to connect with people like you
Wow. Still remember Lauren who had fine blonde hair who would follow me around and admire my hair for being so shiny and straight. I’m thankful for her. I honestly didn’t even know people could criticise thick, shiny straight hair. 🤬
I also quit the curly girl method after I got acne, even after trying different products. It wasn’t worth it. Yet I don’t ever see people talking about products clogging pores. And without product my hair looked so good the first day but after that the style didn’t last.
I quit the CGM for many reasons: 1- it was time consuming.. like REALLY time consuming 2- one of the things they talk about is 'not to brush your hair between washes', we shed hair ever single day, not washing means you don't get rid of the hair that you shed. Naturally, when you brush before washing, you notice more fallen hair than usual. I knew that, but over time, all that fallen hair started making me very anxious, and I became too obsessed with looking in the mirror worried about bald spots. It was a very stressful situation 3- A LOT of products are needed. all those products felt so heavy, and my hair did NOT enjoy gel 4- I kept asking myself 'what if I have to go somewhere and I need to style my hair? all this hardwork is going to be lost' 5- this one is probably the main reason. I've always had a weak body. I get ill VERY quicky, so leaving my hair wet is a big no no. With the CGM, i had to, even if I diffuse, you only diffuse it half way through and let it air dry. That was one of my biggest issues with this method.
That last part is something I really resonate with. I have fibromyalgia so doing my hair is not something I can afford to use a lot of energy on (or money lol). But all these routines I see on UA-cam (not Jen's) are so complicated and take forever and so many products. I'm ready to give up on my wavy hair because of it.
@@ashanein I posted this comment 2 years ago, and since then, a few things have changed. I learnt more about my hair and how to care for it. I even found what products work on my hair and how to make it less time consuming.
as another asian woman who grew up as the "other" in a predominantly white community, this video really connected with me. thank you for sharing your experiences, i have always loved your videos and appreciate your openness and warmth 💕
Thanks so much for this. I’m Chinese and have hair like you described it! Not stick straight but a bit coarse and actually wavy. I am learning day by day to embrace the hair that I was born with!
Humans are obsessed with labeling people and things and putting people into boxes: you're either this OR that. Thank you for this video. I too feel shame for using heat on my hair like it's the "wrong" thing to do...what is that!? I'm so sorry you went through what you did with your hair. The people who truly matter will love you even if you're bald. Hold those ones close. Ditch all others. 💕
YESSS I love this sentiment! Love is so much greater than hair, and I would love the people I love even in they were bald for sure. I hope others would feel that about me too ❤️
I have relatively coarse and wavy hair, so I've been trying CGM for about 6 months, but I don't see any results... I thought about quitting it, but I didn't wanna feel like I was "cheating" on CGM. Watching this video, hearing you went through a similar journey as I did really does make me feel better!
I totally relate to this, even my asian mom and aunties often compare my coarse frizzy wavy nor straight hair with the other asian girls with the sleek straight shiny hair. As asian living in Indonesia, being chinese with strict asian lifestyle, my mom always worry about my frizzy coarse hair. She is the reason i straightened my hair permanently in 5th grade and keep on doing it until senior high school. I am always so scared and nervous to dry my hair after swimming class at school. I would always tie my hair in ponytail eventhough it is still half wet, in order to prevent it from poofing. Until now, my hair is still either straight nor wavy. Im trying to accept my natural hair, but somehow at my university, all asian chinese girls has sleek shiny hair. I feel so insecure and i would always tie my hair in ponytail every single day to prevent me from straightening my hair and using heat all the time. Im trying to accept and embrace my waves, but it just so hard. These days, i have to straighten my hair and style it using heat. It is just so sad, i feel bad to myself, i just wish i could have a least decent straight manageable hair :(
The irony of being asked about your hair being like horse hair… in high school all the girls would talk about using horse shampoo to thicken their hair and make it shinier because all of a sudden that was the trend 🙃
I would give anything in the world to have super thick hair!! My boyfriend is Latino and his hair(the actual strands) are so thick. Omg I admire and envy his hair. My hair is half thick and half less saturated. But I do have curly hair that looks cute when I style it. But his hair is majestic.
Jen, I relate so much to everything! From growing up in an almost all-white community and getting racialized comments I didn't know how to respond to at the time, to my hair being coarser and harder to manage compared to white girls around me, to discovering that my hair was actually wavy as an adult and being drawn to curly girl, and to being too busy to do a ton as a mom of 2! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt journey with us, Jen! 💕 I've been in similar situations with my life living in a predominantly white community and having them give me "the look" for being different. I have similar hair and style preferences as well. There's absolutely nothing wrong for leaving it the way it is as well as changing it up if you feel like it. Do what makes you feel good. It's your hair (and your life). 😄 Sending you lots of love. 💖💕
Hi, My name is Stephanie , Steph short . I know I am just a nobody here in the comments , but I definitely would want to maybe be friends. If not I understand . I hope you know you are amazing no matter what anyone else says and you have a purpose in life 💗 Stay beautiful and know that you are worthy always . Hope you have a Happy New Year . You are beautiful the way you are and unique in your own way. Don’t forget.
I had similar experiences with you Jenn, I had people growing up telling me that my hair look like Hagrid’s (from Harry) and a squirrel tail when I would put it in a ponytail. I started the curly girl method around the same time as you, and it was really fun in the beginning. It really boosted my confidence in taking ownership of my own hair in its natural state. But yeah it’s tiring committing 2 hrs of doing the method plus my neck and shoulders would be sore the next day 😆 so I now I do it maybe twice a month when I want to treat myself. I don’t think of it as curly hair journey anymore. It’s my healthy hair journey and been the healthiest it has been in yeaaars!
That’s ridiculous that people judge you for something like this. There are more important things in life people should worry about, especially in their own lives, then judging people they don’t even know on what they do.
Thank you, thank you! I have been trying curly girl, devoted, for a whole year. After a myriad of products, wasted time, and the frustration of no brushing or heat, I think I feel okay to stop. Literally felt like maybe I didn't give it long enough but now I'm certain that I can quit. I think I'll curl my hair for the first time in a year tomorrow 😀 You're beautiful and sweet. Thanks for the encouragement and for being real!
Jen, I am a 23 Asian American and I know how you feel. Growing up, I myself realized and internalized the fact that my hair was different than most others around me. It didn’t bother me though because I knew it was just thicker individual hair strands & a stronger hair texture honestly than most peoples hair. I was proud of my hair and it’s ability to grow it out so strong, long and healthy. Therefore, I had a positive relationship with my hair and throughout my life have tried to educate those around me even at a young age that the way their hair just grows differently and is genetically different. This also remind me of a girl in middle schools who stared right at me during gym and said “why don’t you have any eyelashes”, I looked back at this aquatinted schoolmate and said, “I definitely do, it’s just hard to see them right now because the fact that my eyes shape is different and so the eyelash hairs naturally grow straight down and are also straight when they grow out not in a curled way like yours. She looked at me so baffled at the fact her I just gave her a legit answer and I will never forget that experience. I knew she wasn’t trying to be offensive, but it would’ve been better had it been phrased as a question and not like a statement.
This is how I want to raise my daughter! With pride in her body & love for herself, while also learning to words to speak up for herself when someone says something that’s uncomfortable.
Jen, this video means so much to me in so many different ways. I, too, am from the Midwest and grew up in a predominantly white area and I have shared similar experiences. I also grew up with hair that if I brushed it, it would poof up and look all wild. 2020, during the height of the pandemic is when I started my curly hair journey and there were so many products and so many steps and so many rules that didn’t work for me. Eventually, mid 2021, I decided that I was gonna do what worked for me and I found that all I needed was a curl crème that gave me soft bouncy curls/waves that didn’t weigh my hair down or make it too greasy or too dry. I appreciate that there are other people out there who, kind of, in a way, “get it.” Thank you.
As an Asian American with similar hair texture I grew up in a much diverse area , this video brings so much perspective! I grew up going to school and I had a totally different experience- black girls used to braid my hair for me during story time in class/ and play with my hair during bus rides back in elementary school I loved it!. It really sucks you grew up with that type of surrounding. This video made me feel proud of what I have :)
I think it's somewhat a known phenomenon that strangers often touch black women's hair without permission, but I think this happens to Asian women, too! Strangers would touch my hair. And I even had people touch my hair and say "Asian girls' hair is soo nice" which.. I guess is a compliment but damn it felt weird like they were treating me like a doll. It was creepy lol. And I grew up in SoCal! So even in places where you think people would know better, there are some weirdos. I used to think my hair was thin cause my sister's hair was the stereotypical super straight, shiny, thick Asian hair. And then when I went into college, I had a white roommate and I touched her hair. I was like WHAT its SO THIN lmfao. So then realized that I didn't have thin hair, it's just "thin" in comparison to my sister's and other Asian girls' hair! So everything is relative. In American society, if your hair is coarse or thick, it's always in relation to *white* people's hair! Like, from an Asian perspective, white peoples' hair is thin and fragile haha.
I used to work for a Asian lady. She was 40 but she looked 27 and her hair was so thick and rich and I would touch it all the time and admire it. She would love it because she knew me and I would give her scalp massage 😆. But too be serious to me the most beautiful hair comes from Asian and Spanish people. My hair is curly but very poofy and don't listen.
I am always comforted by your honesty, especially because I happen to share many of the experiences that you had to go through. I also hope people would not be too strict towards influencers who try out different methods from time to time; after all, it depends on what type and place you are in, and certain routines may just be one of many trends that undergo changes. All the best in whatever you do Jen. Lots of love for my favorite beauty guru 😌💕
❤️❤️❤️ I love that I’m able to share the evolution of who I am and who I’m becoming online. And I’m thankful it gives others the ability to accept that in themselves too!
As someone with curly curly hair who also transitioned at the start of the pandemic, I’ve realized that strictly following the curly girl method isn’t helpful to learning about how to style your own curls/waves. And you’re right, it’s way too much pressure to never straighten or use heat tools! I’ve just stopped following the exact method and doing what works for me! I use shampoo, I use silicones, I use heat tools, I use my diffuser on high heat & high speed, I don’t plop, and I wash my hair pretty much the same from before (just with different products)-because that’s what works for MY lifestyle! I hope for anyone who’s felt too locked into these “rules” that you realize you absolutely do NOT need to feel guilty for doing what works for you! And you aren’t a failure if a full CGM doesn’t work for your lifestyle or if you like to flat iron your hair ♥️ it’s all about what works for your lifestyle & keeping your hair healthy!
Yes!!! And healthy hair is a huge spectrum as well, which I didn’t cover in the video. I can do a fair bit of heat styling and still not have split ends. So what really is “unhealthy”? It’s different for each person
As an East Asian I also have hair that’s more on the coarse side. I’ve always wanted more fine Caucasian hair because it’s more flexible and soft. But I’ve come to accept my hair and now I like it. I can bleach it a lot because it’s strong and my hair hold curls so well. I never use hairspray and my hair will stay wavy for a few days. I actually don’t like how my hair is so straight though. If it was fine it would be okay, but my hair is coarse and very straight when it dries so I feel like the ends of my hair look like pointy needles lol. If I style my hair straight I’ll use my blowdry brush so I can give my ends a curl
I dont see why you have to be so strict to a particular method. I use some of the techniques from the curly girl method when I want my hair to be wavy/curly, but I use heat when I want, blow dry it when I want, etc. It's a personal choice and no one should have a say in how u do ur hair.
I’m only halfway through this video, but I completely understand. I have naturally wavy/curly hair but the curly girl method is just too much and too time consuming for me.
I do feel like CGM is a bit of a cult, and there is shaming when people revert, which really is not acceptable. I’m really glad that you’re doing what works for you, your hair and your lifestyle ❤️.
The reason a lot of people develope acne from the curly girl products is that many have coconut oil and olive oil. Both clogs pores and feed yeast on your scalp which can cause dermatitis. 🙄 I learned after using cowash everyday. Now I use DermaE shampoo and conditioner with leave in conditoner, and only use cowash when my hair feels dry. Dermatitis(dandruff can be caused by excess oil not dryness.) One of the CGM UA-camrs had a guest speaker who was a dermatologist explain this. I only use steps from the cgm that worked better for my hair but not all - I don’t diffuse. I don't always air dry. I don't use gel, mousse, styling cream etc.
i have wavy hair and your curly girl method video inspired me to look into it because i never usually see Asian girls doing the method because of the typical straight silky hair. i never did end up trying it because it was a lot of time and steps i didn’t feel committed to do. I saw Function of Beauty at Target for a more affordable price so i got the one for wavy hair and after i wash my hair, i braid both sides and that’s how i achieve heatless waves that can last for a few days!!! Thank you for sharing your story and I’m happy that we are both able to find something that works for our hair and makes us happy doing it 🥰
Love you mentioned the neck acne. Just yesterday it dawned on me to wash my face and neck out of the shower after leave in is applied and hair plopped. This will hopefully relieve some of the acne on my neck. I am NOT a young woman and get this problem. Life is a learning experience. Do what feels food for you.
As another Asian girl your story about hair really connected with me! My hair used to be straight then it got curly and I didn’t really know how to deal with it… thank you for this video 😊
I have been through something very similar. I started the curly girl routine and eventually gave up. Can you please do a daily hair routine/styling routine of what you now use and do and how you do it. It’ll be very useful and appreciated :)
Just left a comment on your cgm method video, had no idea you made this video! Makes sense what you’re talking about!! I definitely don’t follow it all the time either…there’s sometimes I miss straight hair, so I’ll blow dry with my round brush like I used to (just no straightener) but also use the leave in conditioner I usually use with the cgm method so my hair won’t be so frizzy. Almost as good as straightening my hair. Thanks for sharing what works for you!! So sad to hear of the harsh remarks you got if people thought you weren’t doing the method.😢 maybe because I’m coming later to the game - most wavy hair accounts I’ve been following are Asian, and they seem way more relaxed in doing this method. From them I learned it’s better not to use too many products because it doesn’t work for wavy hair; just 1-2 products after shampoo/conditioner is plenty. And I definitely diffuse, can’t stand air drying my hair. Ill only plop/microplop my hair at the most, then diffuse to dry. Been thankful for the perfect hair care towel for helping dry hair quicker. If I have time, I do enjoy getting my natural waves as I struggle with curling irons in general, much prefer my hair straight if I’m gonna style it other than cgm lol. I’d been eyeing the function of beauty products and was hesitant with the mixed reviews I’ve read on target, but encouraged to hear of your good experience with it!
I am a Korean adoptee and grew up in the Northeast. As a baby, I had extremely curly hair, which was extremely humorous due to my (white) family also all having curly hair. For most of my childhood, my hair was that sleek and shiny Asian hair that everyone thinks of. Up in the Northeast, people didn't really bother me or my family about my adoption and there were many other minorities where I grew up.Then I hit puberty. My hair got extremely thick, frizzy, and very coarse. I hated it. I just wanted to have the sleek, shiny Asian hair that everyone thought of. And then I moved to the Southeast US, where I was pretty certain that I was the first Asian person most of these people had ever met. Despite this, I would somehow get confused with any other Asian person in the same vicinity. I was treated like a perpetual foreigner. Still can't tell you how many times people tell me that "your English is really good". I had many identity crises. I was also an emo kid and dyed my hair different colors constantly and I was still getting confused with any other Asian person in the same vicinity. It was very important for people to know that I was 'me'. Fast forward many years later and working at a salon, I had been blonde very many years on end. I loved it. I feel very comfortable being blonde. I never wanted dark hair again. And when COVID started kicking into high gear and the attacks on Asian people started to sky-rocket... I didn't want to be Asian at all. I very recently chopped off a lot of hair and dyed it dark, as blonde was too much upkeep since I don't work at a salon anymore. But it really made me realize how much I didn't want to accept being Asian. I didn't realize how much trauma I had about my hair and my hair surrounding my identity. I'm slowly but surely starting to accept my hair and my Asian-ness! It's very comforting to hear of another Asian woman who has also struggled with her hair so thank you for sharing your story!
Jen! You made this video and this has been me the last few months. I’m a teacher and seriously I’m just not trying to be taking 1 hour to get curly hair. Lol. I’m a long time fan of Function of Beauty! I got lazy and now I just use the premade formulas from Target and I haven’t turned back since. I use the wavy formula with the scalp and anti-frizz additions and if I want to do wavy hair I can like do what I need to do for that and if I want straight it works too!
Sorry you experienced that. Some kids have no filter and little girls can be so mean. I think your hair is beautiful. And i think slightly coarse hair is a blessing because it can be much stronger and you can grow it longer than girls with very fine hair.
My sister told me that curly girl method people have actually been racist towards asians on their forums, accusing them of faking curls with perms and all
I'll admit, finding CGM gave me the push to learn how to take care of my hair better. No one in my family taught me how to do that and my hair never looked or behaved the same as my peers' hair. I stopped adhering to CGM after a month, but I don't regret doing it.
This is why I like UA-cam, you can’t connect as well on short videos, I always felt I was so cursed with my hair and did not know you experience this too.
I think you should have the freedom to do whatever you want with your hair. Dont listen to what ppl say, just enjoy everything God has given to make you who you are ☺️💕
I didn't know some Asians had this experience with white people questioning their hair. Story of our lives in the black community.😂🤦🏾♀️ I had my hair in an afro puff once at work and literally my white friend came up behind me and "pet" it as she walked pass. Literally pet it like a cat or a dog. I said "this isn't a petting zoo". She looked embarrassed and flustered. Maybe it's just a Midwest thing because I'm in the Midwest too. Needless to say, that was the first and last time I wore my hair like that. Also, I've always envied the STREGNTH and the ability to achieve "glass hair" of Asian hair. We usually can't see the beauty in what we already have. Thanks for the video. Great topic.
It most likely didn’t work for you because you don’t have a full head of curls. Yes straight hair can follow this but you’re not gonna see results like curly hair will.
I can definitely relate to your experience Jen. As an Asian girl growing up in Florida, I could relate because I almost never saw other Asians with naturally curly hair. I honestly felt like a weirdo for not having the “normal straight” hair expected of Asians and Asian girls in general. Luckily my mom has the same hair texture as me and knew how I felt so she was able to relate
@@frmheadtotoe Just enjoy what your mama gave to you, :) It is so nice to hear from you and I am so happy that are you enjoying motherhood and married life
Finally! I thought the same thing! When I was researching the “curly girl” method I came to the conclusion that essentially it is the ingredients in the products you’re using that you need to be aware of and once you cut out all those unnecessary ingredients your hair will thank you and be it’s best version of its self whether it’s curly or not. Thank you for sharing your experience!
It depends on your definition, you really need an actually deep understanding of the science behind it to know what's necessary or not. I have found that much of CGM is based off of logical fallacies and miss information. A chanel you may want to check out is the Manes by Mell channel, she always explains the what's and why's.
Having tried curly girl, I feel like it's good for a base and to take what works for you and tweak it. I know there are some that are die hard curl girl and like to make this known 🙃 not the most helpful. Glad you have found what works for you!
I just think whatever you do, you look great in your own skin. They can say whatever they think of you, their opinions are just opinions. I am Asian and even I have stick straight hair. I still received comments from others that if I flat iron my hair even though I told them I have straight hair naturally. Sometimes, you should just ignore or mental block them like I do. And I feel how you feel because I now live in a predominantly white community in mid-east. But I appreciate for sharing your thought in your videos and clarify to others the misconception of Asian hair structure vs what they think.
I have a mix of different hair types ranging from 1c to 2c depending on where the strands of hair are. I tried CGM and quickly stopped purely cause it doesn't fit my life and personality. I am a low maintenance type of person. I dreaded hair wash days cause of how time consuming it was, and don't get me started on the cost of trialling different products. Although with CGM, my hair looked great first day, however the next day it wasn't the same. And to again maintain the waves/curls you have to refresh your hair. If i need to, ill just braid it before sleeping and next day i have great braided waves. I feel like haircare should be based on priorities in life. I love my hair when i just wash it with shampoo and condition, use some leave in oil when its damp and that's it. If you are a low maintenance person, generally what you were originally doing will be the best option.
Both my parents are mixed race but I am super white-passing. I grew up in a majority Asian city in the US. I longed for my hair to be thick and pin straight like the popular girls at school. My mom practically begged me not to get a straight perm lol In my mid 20s, I accepted that I have curly hair and found the CG method. Honestly I couldn't get with it. I had way too many fairy knots if I finger brushed. I have fine, thin hair so brushing in the shower would cause me to lose clumps. My hair would be a giant grease ball. It was so gross. I'm happy with the simple things I use now.
Your hair so beautiful 😍 😊I can totally see where you’re coming from. I’m from India. Although I think Barbie hair is kind of a compliment actually ❤ I grew up in Germany and Denmark and coming from India, and all the all the other girls had fine, blonde hair and I had thick, dense hair.
Before there was talk about inclusivity on film and TV there was YT and Jen was one of the OG. I too am an Asian who was very caucasian communities and seeing Jen on YT felt affirming in ways that I didn't really understand at the time.
I have thin wavy Russian hair and am so jealous of hair like your Jen! Also tried the CGM and I don't know, one has to have a looot of time to stick to it lol. I love my hair to be curly but not at the cost of my precious time. Oh well. Also, my scalp is quite oily too so I have to wash my hair more often.
i also stopped doing cgm after a few months bc it just took too much time and effort. :// i grew up around lots of other asians and i also used to have the nice straight shiny hair until i hit puberty. i was the only asian girl i knew who looked like a lion. 😭 no one could figure out why my hair suddenly became so wavy until i googled it much later in life and realized hormones can change your hair like that (wild!!). my mom took me to get my hair straight permed for 3 years in a row so i could have the nice straight hair like everyone else did. i found out about cgm at the beginning of 2020 and decided i would try it because everyone got such nice results. i did it for about 5?? months and only the hair in the front half of my head would get curly but the whole back would be in that in-between wavy and curly and that just made me look like a mess. and also it took so long to do all the steps and wait for it to air dry so i just stopped doing it. now i just use sulfate free products and air dry when i can and it seems to be doing fine and maybe even getting straighter which is kinda funny :D
wow, it's absolutely inspiring to know that so many others went through what I did. my whole family (both my sisters and mum) have beautiful sleek 'stereotypical asian hair.' however, after i turned about 10, my hair became frizzy and coarse and soo soo poofy. i began to hate it and my self esteem went down 📉 during your video, i actually gasped because one of my 'closest' friends also said the exact same thing. 'Your hair is like a horse's tail.' Thank you so much for this! We need to normalize asian girls with different hair
Honestly, I did the same thing. It was fun to try in 2020 when I had all this extra time. Now I'm in grad school and doing a teaching residency. I don't have that much time. I still use a cowash, but I'm straightening my hair so that I can just ignore it for multiple days. I just don't have time for anything else.
not hair related but when i was in elementary school i got teased a lot for having a “big butt” and full lips. in the 90s/2000s the super thin curve-less figure was in and i certainly did not fit that bill as a latina. i find it funny how those things are very much in style now. i WILL have the last laugh 😂😋
Yeah it’s pretty silly how body styles come in and out of fashion!!! I always was teased for being too skinny and depending on the situation, it was either a good or bad thing. I mean, best thing I ever did was to stop caring what others said about my body altogether 🙅🏻♀️
My twin sister and I have wavy hair, and my younger sister has curly hair that she likes to drown in shellac. My baby sister wears her hair in a bob, so it's been a long time since I've seen her with long hair. I think it was a little wavy.
Girl! As a Middle Eastern person. This entire video made me feel seen! I had thick curly hair as a baby that I got for my father that went totally straight as a child. And I mean my hair was pin straight! Light, straighter than my own sexuality. During puberty, my hair began to get confusing? It was like a stick, heavy blanket against my neck! I didn’t know what to do with it. I didn’t have white girl hair, but I also didn’t have an Afro you know? So it was just fake and weird! To add to that, I had severely oily scalp. I was literally washing my hair every day because of the hormones! Wow wow! This entire video made me feel seen. Are you Middle Eastern? Because holy shit I’ve never even seen a video of anyone describing my hair! I would literally go to swimming and I would come back with this thick blanket hanging down my back that I couldn’t even blow dry because it wouldn’t blow dry straight!
I kinda stopped the curl girl method too. It was exhausting!! I have two small children😅 But I learned so much from it and with the products I use now my hair stays curly all day when I do overnight heatless curls. My hair could never hold a curl for long with all the silicones in my products. Now I have more volume and curls whenever I want😆 So my curly girl experience was a success for me, although I only stick to the products and not the routine😅
i think i have the same concern with cgm. it is super time consuming and with me being in PH i can't not take a bath before i go to work because, I work out as part of my morning routine which will sweat me up like crazy (PH is a very hot country to begin with) then have to take a bath then prep for work.. with this alone i consume about 4hrs of my morning.. then add another one for CGM.. also i cannot use leave on conditioner or any leave on products in my hair because it triggers my acne.. But I cannot straighten my hair always or even blow dry it bec it got weak after I had covid (idk why) that I easily loose hair and now have fewer hair strands. So im stuck with.. I have to live with my wavy hair but cannot commit to a full CGM method... and cant go under hair "reconstructions" (like rebond or perm). and we all know how hair contribute alot to ones physical appearance..
I'm so sorry you had to deal with rasism in childhood. I wish I knew how to care and style curly hair when I was a student. And now I know how to manage it but I prefer to spend my free hour to relax after a day with toddler 😂
I’ve been following you for a long time, and honestly, I don’t think the CGM was meant for you hair, which is probably part of why you didn’t like it. I think right now there are a lot of people who try it thinking that some frizz or general issues with dryness or coarse hair means that their hair is curly, but the CGM, or even curly-haired styling that wouldn’t be considered CGM approved, isn’t meant for every hair type. I don’t follow the CGM as someone with 3c-4a hair, but for a lot of us curlies, it’s a 4-5 hour time commitment every time we wash our hair
I agree: it's a good method but it's so time consuming, tbh, and I'm not even a mother, I just don't wanna spend a whole hour just for this process. I have tried it and yes, the curls are beautiful, but it's not something I wanna do on a daily bases. Plus, my neck doesn't really thank me when I do it. For me it doesn't worth it, tbh
an asian with oily scalp and lots of dandruff? tangled ends? what do you guys use to deal with this??? any leave in i put IN MY ENDS makes my scalp itch. i used to have a TON of hair but it's all fell out bc of this dandruff problem. cannot let hair air dry or i'll get dandruff :(
Please try anti fungal shampoo! It helped me. Also if you can fix your diet and eat more fresh fruit and veggies will help. Try to avoid white carbs and sugar. Good luck
Idk if you are still looking for this, but you might want to look into kinky curly knot today leave in conditioner. A lot of people with wavy/curly hair and sensitive scalp like that one.
The curly girl method was originally started because curls respond to treatment differently than straight hair. It has evolved over the years, but the basic technique still relies on getting more moisture to curls because their structure is different. If you have basically straight hair, the curly girl method isn't really as needed in that area. It's confusing why you would ever have needed it to begin with. But everyone is free to do what they like and what is best for their hair.
I’m Korean, adopted and grew up in a primary Caucasian neighborhood. I feel like I had the opposite experience. Girls were ALWAYS jealous of my hair. They were jealous that my hair was like Barbie. But Barbie was a BIG thing when I was growing up.
Gee what has the world come to that you have to explain to the world how to look after your hair! I mean sharing tips is one thing making people feel like a bad person is ridiculous
“Good hair” is such a strange concept. Hair is good the way it grows. We don’t need these headache-inducing rituals that suck up so much of our time & money.
I don’t get straight hair people wanting to try the CGM 😅 you have it already easy with straight hair why complicate your life?? I wish I could get out of the shower and don’t have to apply gel and so on!
I can only speak for myself but as a naturally wavy-haired person, I wanted to see how much curl potential I could get out of it! It was fun to try a new routine and the curls were really exciting. Now I know I can try both, but I do definitely feel so much for the girls who depend on routines like CGM to maintain healthy curls, especially seeing what it takes!
I hate how the internet has come to a point where people think it’s necessary to give their opinions on others doing what’s comfortable for them and their lifestyle. You don’t owe anyone an explanation, your hair looks fantastic!!! 🤗
Hi,
I too had similar experiences growing up half Asian in predominantly white Quebec.
My hair once was stick straight is now a type 2 B wave. I’ve learned to live with it using a partial curly girl method.
Now I’m tired of it and want to try a 90s layering and styling it with a blowout with Velcro rollers but scared to damage my healthy hair.
she never had curly hair. stop the cap
People are extremely rude.
Is your hair styled naturally for the video?! It looks amazing!!
It's been a long journey! Thanks!!
I had trouble with the style keeping after day 1 too! It never looked as nice even when I followed all the “rules” for second day hair
I quit the CGM for many reasons:
1- it was time consuming.. like REALLY time consuming
2- one of the things they talk about is 'not to brush your hair between washes', we shed hair ever single day, not washing means you don't get rid of the hair that you shed. Naturally, when you brush before washing, you notice more fallen hair than usual. I knew that, but over time, all that fallen hair started making me very anxious, and I became too obsessed with looking in the mirror worried about bald spots. It was a very stressful situation
3- A LOT of products are needed. all those products felt so heavy, and my hair did NOT enjoy gel
4- I kept asking myself 'what if I have to go somewhere and I need to style my hair? all this hardwork is going to be lost'
5- this one is probably the main reason.
I didn’t see results for about a year and it got better years after. It takes time
I’m Filipino and have thick wavy hair, that’s more straight on the bottom and curlier on the top. I’m still learning how to style it day by day :)
Right? 😆
Yep! Mane N' Tail 😂
Thank you for the encouragement to love my naturally thick (& not super straight) hair 😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Oh that’s amazing your hair had the chance to get so much healthier! And squirrels have beautiful tails am I right? 😅🐿
That’s ridiculous that people judge you for something like this. There are more important things in life people should worry about, especially in their own lives, then judging people they don’t even know on what they do.
Right?!?! Didnt know there was so much drama about how you style your hair.
I had the same experiences as a small child and an adult! I didn't handle it well and felt ashamed. Now I just embrace it.
Love your attitude 💗
Totally get it ❤️ I’m so glad you found a curl crème and system that works for you! Honestly the best routine is the one you do
As an Asian American with similar hair texture I grew up in a much diverse area , this video brings so much perspective! I grew up going to school and I had a totally different experience- black girls used to braid my hair for me during story time in class/ and play with my hair during bus rides back in elementary school I loved it!. It really sucks you grew up with that type of surrounding. This video made me feel proud of what I have :)
What a beautiful experience to reflect on 🥰 I actually love when people play with & braid my hair. It’s one of my favorite things!
Same here.
Curly girl made my roots a hot mess. I was afraid to try new things but never found products I liked. I do my one thing now and I love it.
I really love those blow dry brushes!!!
I have flexible and soft hair and it's Hell to style. Always limp and poofy
Hey i dont even have kids, curly girl method is so frigging time consuming lol
i have wavy hair and your curly girl method video inspired me to look into it because i never usually see Asian girls doing the method because of the typical straight silky hair. i never did end up trying it because it was a lot of time and steps i didn’t feel committed to do. I saw Function of Beauty at Target for a more affordable price so i got the one for wavy hair and after i wash my hair, i braid both sides and that’s how i achieve heatless waves that can last for a few days!!! Thank you for sharing your story and I’m happy that we are both able to find something that works for our hair and makes us happy doing it 🥰
That’s my favorite old school heatless waves trick!!! French braided pigtails 👧🏻
I'm quitting CGM too, i was searching for videos here and your video gave me so much to think about! I seriously agree with all you said
It most likely didn’t work for you because you don’t have a full head of curls.
Haha truthfully my mom still denies to this day that her hair has natural wave. I told her, I got this from you! 🤣
@@frmheadtotoe Just enjoy what your mama gave to you, :) It is so nice to hear from you and I am so happy that are you enjoying motherhood and married life
My mom told me the same and she chose never straighten. She just shampoos and conditions then adds mouse every day. Her hair looks good.
You shouldn’t care about what others think. I think you look beautiful with curly hair and it’s your life.
Having tried curly girl, I feel like it's good for a base and to take what works for you and tweak it. I know there are some that are die hard curl girl and like to make this known 🙃 not the most helpful. Glad you have found what works for you!
I just quit CGM bc of my personal lifestyle, was fun while it lasted tho! Love you sharing both sides 💛
Oh my god this hit me to my core. I had a lot of people call my hair horse-like. Even to this day people keep commenting on my hair negatively.
Aw 🥲 I’m both sad and glad to hear it wasn’t just me! 🐴 But also horses do have beautiful hair too!!!
I've been watching you for years and I love these videos that I can relate to so much as an adopted Asian women.
Amen, sis. Feel u all da way. (I South-Asian,Pacific Islander, with wavy hair).
Both my parents are mixed race but I am super white-passing. I grew up in a majority Asian city in the US. I longed for my hair to be thick and pin straight like the popular girls at school. My mom practically begged me not to get a straight perm lol
In my mid 20s, I accepted that I have curly hair and found the CG method.
This is a great video. I couldn't stick with the curly girl method. I really like the options of wearing my hair straight or curly.
Your hair is beautiful!
Following the curly girl method was fun for a while but in the end I just wanted my hair to feel hydrated and i missed silicones.
Me too! My hair loves silicone
i also stopped doing cgm after a few months bc it just took too much time and effort.
'Your hair is like a horse's tail.'
Thank you so much for this!
Thank you for this video ❤️
not hair related but when i was in elementary school i got teased a lot for having a “big butt” and full lips. in the 90s/2000s the super thin curve-less figure was in and i certainly did not fit that bill as a latina. i find it funny how those things are very much in style now. i WILL have the last laugh 😂😋
Yeah it’s pretty silly how body styles come in and out of fashion!!! I always was teased for being too skinny and depending on the situation, it was either a good or bad thing. I mean, best thing I ever did was to stop caring what others said about my body altogether 🙅🏻♀️
@@frmheadtotoe agreed! learned to embrace my natural features and refuse to be ashamed if something about myself isn’t what’s on trend 💕
Ahhhhh thanks for sharing this pretty momma, this Asian chick has wavy hair too. ❤️😘😘😘Sandy
My twin sister and I have wavy hair, and my younger sister has curly hair that she likes to drown in shellac.
My baby sister wears her hair in a bob, so it's been a long time since I've seen her with long hair. I think it was a little wavy.
The one thing i dumped from curly girl method is not combing or brushing after a shower. My hair is so tangled so fast it was the worst
Let’s be honest, a lot of the toddler years are spent with messy hair in exchange for lots of hugs ❤️ Gotta take in the moment as it comes!
@@frmheadtotoe so true!
I have to comment before it starts to say I did too!!!
I started doing the curly hair method the moment I dyed it blond bc with my natural hair, you wouldn’t notice how dry my waves were
I hate the CGM does not work for my curls at all!
Just want to say you are beautiful and hope you are filled with God’s love and joy =)
an asian with oily scalp and lots of dandruff? tangled ends? what do you guys use to deal with this??? any leave in i put IN MY ENDS makes my scalp itch. i used to have a TON of hair but it's all fell out bc of this dandruff problem. cannot let hair air dry or i'll get dandruff :(
Please try anti fungal shampoo!
Wow! You're children are so big now! I remember when Aria's hair was just a little black tuft. I feel old :D
I still remember her little tuft too 🥲 but it just means our memory is still good haha
@@frmheadtotoe Haha yes, that’s a good sign 😅
I'm happy to meet you. Wow! I love you
Thank you for sharing!
Wow, kids are the meanest...
The moment i started cgm i came across this video
“Good hair” is such a strange concept. Hair is good the way it grows. We don’t need these headache-inducing rituals that suck up so much of our time & money.
Super random but where is your headboard from?
I’m so sorry 😞
Do you still use Vegamour?
I’m not using it at the moment but I still recommend it for those who are having hair thinning/fallout issues!
💕💕💕
Girl, it’s literally just hair
It’s not that deep
I was waiting for something like this!!! Your best option is to make an account with Promo-SM.
Gosh. The racist things ppl say. 😖
Are you really not talking about my life? Instead of yours? 🤣🤣🤣
I think your last sentence exactly explains your first question. Grass is always greener on the other side and all that.
