- The Curly Hair Community has created A LOT of Curly Hair Rules. Although they are all great tips... sometimes... enough is enough. Even I don't follow ALL of them. So here is my Curly Confessional...these are all of the Curly Hair Rules I DON'T Follow...
What are some Curly Hair Rules YOU don't follow? Leave me a comment below!
Disclaimer If you CAN follow all the Curly Hair Rules GREAT! DO IT! Most of them really do benefit your hair. BUT. I just want you to know that if you can't keep up with ALL of them, it's not the end of the world :) *

I was watching a natural hair video and the girl suggested "WATER WASHING" I was like..
*BIH YOU MEAN RINSING YOUR HAIR*
+Slummsweets S 😂😂😂😂😂🙌🏽
Slummsweets S Lmao😂😂
rinsing hair is a better alternative of getting rid of some build up with out adding more product to little cleanse the hair
Some people dont understand water only method, you have to first clarify ur hair no conditioner used and massage ur scalp to stimulate sebum and rub it on the length of the hair. No products are to be put in the hair just water and ur natural sebum and its a every day
Slummsweets S.... Lmao
Rules I break:
1) I don't always deep condition regularly .
2)Never had a protein treatment.
3)Never did a ACV rinse.
+Maddiebynature Ok ok! I'll allow all of those except #1!! Haha Gotta deep condition girl!!! 😜 ok I'll take that back.... if you struggle with damage, want your hair to grow faster or be healthier over all.... you need to. If your hair is already good as is.... I'll give you a pass. 👌🏽😁 Hehe!! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
BiancaReneeToday I'm definitely working on it 😂😂😂. I'm just lazy right now .
Maddiebynature protein treatment disagree with my curly hair. ACC rinse worked nicely for mine, but I don't live or die by it.
Maddiebynature same
I just did the first 2 after 2 years after my big chop. never did an ACV rinse, never will.
Basically do what works for YOUR hair..... some things will work that you see but not all of it. Ughhhh thank you Bianca, having a crazy life behind the rules
Some girls, in different groups on FB,,,are actually mean to you if you don't follow the "rules". I do whatever my hair likes. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life.
I never use edge control or sleek my edges with a toothbrush lol 🤣🤣
Me neither!!!
same lol.
I didn't even know people sleek their egdes :/
La Mauricienne a Nassau same, I think curly hair looks better when edges aren't laid
Lol
i don't use a diffuser 🤷🏽♀️
+1
^
Me neither
What is a diffuser
@@lexyself243 it's like blow dryer but you put something over it, it's for curly hair
I'm afraid a cold shower will scar me for life! #TeamHotShower
#TeamBianca!
Bianca beverly #Same
I will say on a day that is hot as hell with no AC...that cold shower be bomb! But I that whole ..."you hair is better when you run cold water"...ish... I find I like my hair better when I use warm water. :-/
Tairema Dailey Girl I am from Minnesota but I understand and agree with you!!
Bianca beverly same
I use warm-hot water
Where my curly rebels at?
My wash day is stupid simple. Shampoo, deep conditioner for 30 minutes, leave in, aloe Vera gel. Air dry.
iamkellij I always wanted to try just aloe Vera gel as a styler. Do u make ur own or buy it?
Rashad Heyward aloe vera gel doesn't have enough hold. Your hair starts getting frizzy and your waves/curls become flatter like one hour later. It works for some people, though. I used 100% pure aloe vera gel from a local brand.
Rashad Heyward also it could make your hair frizzier than normal if you live in a very humid place since it is a humectant. Just give it a go and see it for yourself I guess :)
I don't cowash AT ALL anymore.. in my first few years of being natural and transitioning I did but I did't realize how much I was stunting my growth. My hair gets build up VERY easily so I have to use a shampoo or ACV rinse. Another rule that I break is that I use silicones and sulfates sometimes.. I know it's a slap in the face to the natural hair community but it honestly doesn't really cause me any damage
Sometimes I just sleep with my hair on my non satin pillowcase lol
I'm going through menopause and night sweats are killing me....satin just makes me hotter. I tie up my hair periodically but that's it....
Sometimes??? I sleep without satin pillowcase alllll the time😂
I dont even OWN a satin pillowcase 😂😂
Aaaaaa a monster lmao
To me there's no rules when it comes it your hair. Use and do whatever you want in your hair.
Rules I break:
-I use a denman brush
-I use products that have mineral oils and all that other junk
-I don't eat healthy at all. I eat what I want (never will I ever eat healthy just for some long hair..not worth it)
-I use heat every now and then
-I go weeks without washing my hair (at least 3)
-I sleep on a cotton pillow case
Kinky Koily Kayla Girl!!!! You're on fire!!😂😂😂
Edith Wrilliyana I fell to the floor when she said mineral oils and all that other junk 😂😂😂
Rashad Heyward ikr.....i mean i use mineral oil too, my hair's ok
Eating healthy will prolong your life. Start small and then work your way up. Baby steps:)
There is no guarantee of that. Some of the longest living people technically did not live healthy. Ex. Mr. Spock vs Captain Kirk
She is the reason I finally understand my hair👌😍 I lovee her❤
Isabelle Larbi Druant same here
Rules I break with my 3c hair:
1. I don't cowash...hell i didnt even know what it was til now
2. Never had a hot treatment
3. I dont really know how to comb so... What is a protective style? 😭😂
4. I dont pre-whatever
5. I rarely deep condition
6. I rarely clip my ends
Well i think that's about it 😂 my hair been through tougher times so it'll be fine 😁😂
Curly Hair Rules I Break:
1. I don't sleep on a Satin or Silk pillow case
2. I haven't gotten a trim in a looong time
3. I have dyed my hair within the past year, however, i didn't bleach it but, i still dyed it 🤷🏽♀️
4. I also don't do protective styles unless my hair is looking super tangled and i don't feel like washing it.
5. Never pre-pooed. I honestly dont see the importance.
6. I also don't swear my coconut oil. It honestly doesn't really do anything for my hair, but I'm going to try detangling with it to see how that works!
I stopped following a lot of those rules due to me not having time for that lol 😂
+Kyelon Lee 😂😂💕
Exactly, I only have an hour or 2 to wash, condition, style and dry!
Me too 😂
Being honest... I do not follow any "curly girl rule", I just do what I think is the best for my hair, and what works for my hair which could be totally different to anyone else. :)
Staying away from sulfate-free shampoo is something I don't always do. I have dandruff and need a good seborrheic dermatitis remover shampoo. I can always add moisture back into my hair. I use lukewarm or cool water to rinse out conditioner. I do feel a difference. I don't use it from start to finish.
I break possibly the biggest curly hair rule daily and that's not starting at the bottom when I detangle
Ta_ TeaM same
I top to bottom detangle the hair at the nape of my neck. There's no other way to get those tangles out
I don't pre-poo or co- wash. It's not for me and takes a lot of time lol. I did want to give not protective styles a go because the air in Utah is super dry. That actually make oils my best friend some days. Thanks for reminding us that we're all not perfect and should just do what works best for our curls #Snapfam
1FrolishiousBaby I'm in Utah too! I'm transitioning because I couldn't find a stylist. Do you mind if I ask, who does your curly hair? And, I'm definitely with you on the use of oils here.
2380rsanders My mom did my hair growing up and I have attempted to have others do it and it ended poorly. Since November I have been learning my hair and taking care of it from videos like these. I found a woman in Draper that is DevaCut certified and she has been amazing at the two cuts and one dye I have had. I can give you her info. I'm also on Instagram. A friend and I have talked about starting a curly hair group in Utah foe tips, tricks and maybe product swaps
1FrolishiousBaby I'm in Sandy and I think I need a deva cut, can I get her information as well? My hair is so dry in Utah but I don't have time or money to do protective styles
I don't section my hair when I put my styler in, it's just an unnecessary hassle since my hair is short. I also don't use oils, I haven't seen it do anything for my hair. The only protective style I use are buns and ponytails. I co wash and shampoo, because sometimes I feel like my co wash didn't wash my hair as good as a regular (curly girl approved) shampoo. Love you Bianca ❤️
Idalis Calderon I dont section my hair either, I feel it just shrinks up my hair for than when I just apply it regularly.
Idalis Calderon my hair is long and super thick, so I have to section my hair (in 4s) but I wish I didn't have to, it takes more time and work.
it sounds like we break the same rules (except oil. i love jojoba oil) with those rules, i notice NO change or at least significant change. when i was transitioning from heat i did all that but i cut it out. they're too extra for me and i'm LAZY and i like a clean scalp.
Having curly hair is easier for me than when I used to battle it into being straight. I wash it, condition it, pop some product in and leave it to dry naturally and bam 💥 done!
Having straight hair meant washing it, drying it for 25-30 minutes and then straightening it for 30 minutes!! 😱
OMGG THE OILS PART IS SOOO TRUE 👏🏾👏🏾🗣 ion like using oils either 😂 && ion see the point in " sealing " bc 99.99% of most leave ins is OILS 🙄
Thank you for finally explaining what a Pre-Poo, Co-Wash, and protective style is. As a newbie in this curly hair transformation, I know nothing and your videos have helped me so much in figuring out what I need to do for going all natural for the first time in 25 years 😬
Thank you for being honest in this video because everything you mentioned in this video I was wondering if I just HADDDDD to follow those rules!!! Your the best!!!
So I'm just now discovering you a few weeks ago!! Yo this video was EVERYTHING!! I've been natural all but 2 yrs of my 35 years of living and my hair always grew long and full without all this extra. I was happy about the whole natural hair movement but it pissed me off when I couldn't find a good shampoo ANYMORE. I do none of this and I find when I do all this extra stuff my hair gets stressed out. Protective styles I used to do more when I was younger but even with my curly fro and styles my hair still grows. I hate all the oils in my hair. It does nothing. Shampoo and conditioning every week and put some product that hasn't changed and gives me moisture and I've only found 3 so far is all I need. Whew Chile you're my new hair bestie
I love this video!! I love how honest you are and how you do encourage people to love their curls!!
Rules a break:1.) I don’t pre poo2.) I don’t rinse with cold water 3.) I don’t Cowash because I literally get waaay too much buildup and conditioners do that too often
Soo happy about this vedio especially the co-wash one!love you💙💕
I feel this video! ! I don't use coconut oil and I don't prepoo. I keep it really simple and my hair thrives. Thanks for putting it out there to do what works for you, so folks don't get caught up!
I'm so grateful I found your channel I started taking care of my hair recently and I became overwhelmed at some people's routine. I like to keep things simple, effective, and manageable. You give great advice and have opened my eyes to a new path in my journey. Thanks boo! Keep on rocking on!
such an interesting and different video, rather than "DO THIS OR YOUR HAIR WONT GROW" lol
Rules I DONT follow:
1) I don't ever sleep with my hair covered
2) I don't sleep on a satin pillowcase although I own one
3) I hate and basically never use cold water either
4) I rarely put oil in my hair
I was so excited for this video because I feel so guilty when I don't do or forget to do certain things
Good advice. Love all the information provided. Gonna try the one product rule and no oil. Your hair looks beautiful always and your personality shines.
As someone who is getting back into caring for my curls the past few months, I have to say, this video helped me SO MUCH. I never dove into CGM and have always just kinda treated my curls intuitively because I like a simple routine. I don't follow most of these either, so thank you for the realness of this vid! It put my over-anxious and overwhelmed mind at ease and showed me that sometimes, simple is better 💙
Hahaha! Love video! We have similar hair texture and I don't do any of the same rules. I believe it all about what your hair needs. You took words out my mouth "protective hair style". What is that!
your eyes & complexion are stunning! What's your makeup routine cuz your skin is so smooth & radiant!?!
I just wanted to share this as I just noticed this tonight. Many co washes do have a soap or suds agent in them it's just not harsh so depending on which co wash you use it deffintly is not just washing with conditioner.
Your hair is beautiful and I love your videos. I'm working on obtaining more moisture and elasticity in my hair, along with length. Loving your honesty about what you do!
This is so relatable. I barely follow all the natural hair rules
I appreciate this video SO much! Takes a lot of the stress off! Thank you!
I feel like doing all of the extra rules like oils and all that stuff is for people who have damaged hair and need it but after you get to a good point with your hair you don't have to be so extra with it
Thank you so much for being you!! I really appreciate all your help they have made a difference with me not g iui being up on my curls
Loved this video! I felt so identified with it. Thanks for sharing it to us.
Bianca you’re the only one I follow. I love and appreciate all your advice and honesty. I don’t follow any of the rules you just mentioned, but I do wear protective styles. Thank you 🎀
i always use a denman brush but i'm trying to stop since it takes too much hair out
Rules I don't follow:
1. Never Go wash
2. No Prepoo
3. Don't trim every 6 months
4. Rarely Oil scalp/seal with oils
Yeahhh...I never pre-poo or really use protective styles...#guilty :)
Notifications squad! Snapchat squad! All of your videos are amazing!💙
SAME
Thank you! I appreciate your honesty ✨
I think it’s really all about the hair products especially the no silicone no parabens and no sulfate! But I am just getting started on my natural curly hair. So I will try using all the rules first! Thank you for all the great advice.
Omg no pineapple that's the one thing I thought you would do on the reg. Lol love this video but I'm not big on the protective styling either
I love your videos, you are teaching me so much about my hair!
I love the whole one product idea
I'm so glad I found your videos! I have very curly hair ( 3b/c), and have never really known what to do with it. Recently I decided to be proactive and learn how other women care for and style their curly hair. I even learned how to trim my hair, and have layers! I love your tips and product recommendations. Thank you so much!!
As a mama of 3 young mixed kids, I so appreciate the simplicity of your approach!
i dont do any of those EXCEPT "protective styling" . I cant always leave my hair out lol
Ya girl has blue + purple in her hair so I cowash once every 5-6 days, but this is a "shampoo" laden with oils and gentle surfactants like coco betaine. it's from renpure, it actually does cleanse but does not strip + i try to use it sparingly and ONLY on my scalp in the coldest water i can stand because i don't want my color to wash out
Rules I break:
I wear beanies and hats lol
I touch and play with my hair a lot
I straighten my hair a lot (not because I don't like my hair, it's fun to me)
I don't use ECO gel
Uhhhh I don't
-ACV rinse
-Sleep with a satin pillow case EVERY night lol
- Co wash
- oil
- protective style
- deep condition as I should
- pre poo
Then I wonder why my curls don't last for shit
Lol I do all of these and my curls dont last for shit either 🤷♀️
Hey girl I agree with you I don't follow all the curly girl rules either esp. The wash with cold water . I do however use an oil occasionally. Thanks for your tips they're helpful
Your hair is so beautiful!!!
Love your hair with and without bangs, both lol gorgeous x
Me too. I only use 3 products, shampoo, conditioner and styler. I hate oils!
omg I love you! I just recently discovered the "curly hair community", and it's been overwhelming. What about NOT brushing your hair?? I've seen so many people say that
hey bianca can do do a video on the products that u use for your hair, like the favorites
I'm with you..I use shampoo, conditioner, once a week a deep conditioner, leave in conditioning creme and gel
1. I use a deman brush 😮
2. I use some products that are not CG friendly 😮
3. I sometimes use medium heat to diffuse 😮
I use a regular towel on my hair.
lipstickngore if u want to use a towel maybe try a microfiber towel!
🙀
Good God, noooo!! 😱
Soso Lydia same 😊 but I wear a bonnet 🤣
I'm 3b/c and coconut oil CAN be used as a great styler. And yes co wash can cleanse the scalp if massaged properly.
I'm with you on the protective style thing!
I have started growing my hair for a few months now and I find that protective styling does indeed work. I do comb twists a lot and I leave it in for maybe a couple weeks and when I take them out my hair growth is amazing.
OOH! You should try the Function of Beauty Custom Shampoo and Conditioner! It's probably not meant for curly hair, because there's no styling product included, so I don't know about using a gel or cream or anything, but I still junk it would be interesting to see a curly girl try it!
Serena Mc Function of Beauty has silicones in it :((
you're curls are so cute! you make me proud to be a 3b!
New subbie💕 you're personality is everything
Sometimes I shampoo, I use deep conditoners, cantu curl cream and hair gel. I do sleep on a cotton pillowcase and I use a towel lol
Love this!!
I don't do do either of these either except co-washing. I love co-washing!
Love this so much 😍
Hahah! I love your honesty ❤️ I don't follow these rules too, you're not alone! But I want to try to prepoo with righteous roots, I heard a lot of good things about this oil.
I don't even do any of those except the first one.
Love that the shirt saying goes with the title of this video lol "SAVAGE"
I do not do the cold water rinse and I do not pre-poo. That's just things I don't have time for. I tried both a few times and it was time consuming for me.
Awesome video, just love your videos...soooo many rules :-)
Bianca, thanks for your Video! Totally agreeing that not every „rule“ is necessary, like I don’t wash my hair with cold water 😂 but about co-washing, yes it’s basically skipping shampooing but there are also cleansing co-wash conditioners (like the one from AsIAm, which is great as it cleans the scalp without being as harsh as a shampoo and it’s awesome for detangling!) just wanted to add that 😊 anyways thanks for this encouraging video @bianca ❤️❤️ xxx from Germany
I am 🤣🤣🤣....if you’re a minimalist with that awesome collection of supplies, I have no idea what that term means anymore!
I love watching you! You are just too too adorable!
I love this! This video made me subscribe. I started looking into the natural curly hair care because my hair is very dry and damaged from bad habits (daily washing, using the cheapest hair spray I could find). I just want to have a routine to get strong, healthy hair. I don't have the time or resources for allllll the rules.
This is totally me.....I don't do anything as a routine and I literally just wet my hair put some "guck" on it and hope for the best.....I do need to find my thing though!! I would like to stop the shrinkage a frizz....I do use some of the products you suggest....I guess I want to start taking my hair seriously ....you have hair that is closest to my texture ...so I am glad I found you on here....Thank you for the tips!
I also don't do many protective styles. I like rocking my curls too much. After years of wearing my hair up bc I couldn't manage my hair, it's nice to finally wear it down.
Great video... I know some people say rinse with the coldest water you can stand ... I tried that and my hair was soooo dry. I prefer shampooing with lukewarm water and rinsing with cool water.
I agree on the cowashing 😂 i alternate with sulfate free shampoo and suave naturals conditioner
I follow the "rinsing your hair with cool water" because it's summer (and humid), so it feels nice anyway. This might change when fall and winter come. 😘 I totally get why you don't use protective styles a lot. Your curls look amazing when they're free!!! 😂
I don't cowash and I also don't pineapple my hair when I sleep even though everyone says you should. I also don't moisturize my hair everyday. Maybe like every 3 days
I use hot water in showers and I dont always use scrunchies. I sometimes do a normal hair tye
I never use a styler
I break pretty much all the rules you mentioned except I have been doing a kind of pre poo since I've been doing a scalp message with some oil before I wash my hair and I do wear protective styles for work since wearing my hair out is not the best option for my job.
I have noticed my hair is thinning due to protective styles so back to wash and goes.
I still use shampoo. I never co wash. Only protective hairstyles when I have to work. There are a lot of curly hair rules that I don't follow.
Absolutely love you ! 😂😂😂 what are some of your go to shampoos and conditioners ?
