Judy Collins speaks for me. I played this record for my father to tell him how much he meant to me, a year before he died. She said t so much better than I could have and sung it so much more beautifully. Thank you, Judy Collins

Judy Collins has one of the most exquisite voices. Words can do no justice to it's utter beauty and ability to move the listener. Not only a phenomenal singer she's an astonishing songwriter. This has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

I first heard Judy Collins sing in 1967 and have listened to her singing and vinyl records ever since. Her vinyl record " Wildflowers" as the first on I ever bought. this song touches me as much as her singing of "Ave Maria" without choir.

I'm starting to cry just after listening to 2 songs from her!
All of the great folk singers................I wouldn't trade them for all the singers of today.
    With all due respect.

I met Ms. Collins in 2002(?) Bodles Opera House. What a show! What a Voice! She still had it. After being scolded by the wife of the owner; "NO PICTURES!" I got a friend to pass a note to her backstage, just wanting to thank her for her 9-11 performance and tribute song to the FDNY. The show ended & upon leaving I was ushered to an upstairs suite ,while being informed; "she wants to meet you"....It was like an audience with the queen. I was tongue-tied,;She was gracious & warm . Thanks Judy

Since I first heard Judy sing it in the late '60s, this incredible song has always filled me with a sense of loss beyond nostalgia and a sadness that is almost overwhelming, and still, it's beauty is irresistible.

When I listen this song I remember Greg Skorski. He was born in Glouster Ohio. He was my teacher, my friend, my father in Turkey. Sometimes, When we played the guitar with Greg, He always sang this song. He had missed his family, memories in Ohio. I learned so much things from Greg. Thanks Greg, to you touched my life. I will never forget you. You will always live in my memories.

Judy's song about her father is transcendent, eclipsing time and place and culture. My father died when he was young, barely 53, and I was young, only 22, and we too were set in time, and it was not until I was older than he was when he died that I had even an inkling of my father's longings, and the barriers that prevented him from seeing beyond the horizons that marked the limits of his imagination, horizons set when his father had died at 41, leaving my father, at 14, with no model of what it might be like to be an adult. And no sense that he could have dreamed and hoped, and might have made his dreams reality.

Judy sings lovingly about her father. I suppose most of us have fond memories
of our Dads. Mine was in two wars and assigned to the aftermath of a third. He
never said anything about his war experiences, but we sensed he was saddened
that the World never learned. I still remember, and love my Dad very much.

I get teary-eyed everytime I hear this tune. OF COURSE - I seek it out, and prep myself for the experience. Masochism incorporated. Let us continue to other gut-wrenching stuff from the 60s, 70s - I`m equal to the task. If anyone is in the same mindset, find Richard Thompson..

A good father must always speak of tomorrow, so to set hopes and joy into the heart of his children. If we only told the daily truth, life would be unbearable, even for children. They couldn' t grow in love and harmony.

    “Be Still My Soul”
The old song is back, the one you played in my childhood,
Hands stiff and awkward, with only a couple of chords to make it through the tune,
A man of silence at the piano.
Your sister taught you how to play the hymn you hummed
To all your children. Sleep, for us, followed our Father’s voice,
The last sound we heard and the first to wake us up,
A silent man, except for your lullabies.
We thought we slept in the arms of God.
    The only cradle we knew.
And now that I know you, after I understand what they did to you
And why you didn’t speak or answer questions,
I follow the hymn back to your heart, back to the arms
That held me next to a soul
Stronger than those mountains you left behind.
You gave me rest before I knew how much it cost you to love me.
And now, dear Father, waiting in the arms of that old song,
Carry me, teach me with your silent smile,
Beyond all answers and before all pain,
Hold me next to your quiet heart again
Where everything rests, without a word, in the hymn of these tall trees,
In the arms of this old world
Under the kingdom of your peace.
    V, Sue Tamminga

      My Father
Words and Music by Judy Collins
Universal Music Corp. (ASCAP)/ The Wildflowers Company (ASCAP)
      (Administered by Universal Music Corp.)
      My father always promised us
That we would live in France
We'd go boating on the Seine
And I would learn to dance
      We lived in Ohio then
      He worked in the mines
      On his dreams like boats
We knew we would sail in time
All my sisters soon were gone
      To Denver and Cheyenne
      Marrying their grownup dreams
      The lilacs and the man
I stayed behind the youngest still
      Only danced alone
The colors of my father's dreams
      Faded without a sound
And I live in Paris now
      My children dance and dream
Hearing the ways of a miner's life
      In words they've never seen
I sail my memories of home
      Like boats across the Seine
      And watch the Paris sun
As it sets in my father's eyes again
      My father always promised us
That we would live in France
