I am a woman so i can see the love and admiration she had for James. I'm sure it was very difficult for James to have this addiction and feel he was letting her down, no one really knows the hurt that went on and yes its sad that they couldn't stay friendly especially for the children, he broke her heart without meaning to and she can't get over it and he can't look at her with the guilt and that is the bottom line. I don’t like hearing the recordings of this song by James and other women he married after Carly. He spoiled it for me when he did that. I always thought it was a special song for him with Carly. The things he has said when her refers to Carly , which is rarely, make me think he never really loved her. I guess he couldn’t when he was addicted, though. An addict only lives his drug of choice. It’s a shame she didn’t get a chance to be with him after he kicked his addiction.It seems unfair to her.

I first heard this song on a Linda Rhondstadt album. I love it. I used to sing it to my 3 boys when they were babies. It moves me as much to this day as 37 years ago.
I used to sing this song to my parakeet Root Beer and now sadly he's at my ex-girlfriend's house. We split custody and I'll see him again in two days. I cry myself to sleep listening to this every night.

this song has so much sentimental value to me. im in my thirties now but my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma (how ever its spelled its a type of fast spreading lung cancer caused by asbestos) when he was 26 and i was 5. He used to sit on my bed each night and sing this to me and play his guitar. i didn't know it at the time, but he was actually saying goodbye to me. i listen to the lyrics now and understand what they meant to him. "u can sing this song when im gone" he died @ age 29. :'(

What a waste! I have had a couple of bad times but I can't help but cry when I hear this song. They were so good good together. What's up w/our life? Why do we seek others and not understand what is in front of us? They were so good in Mockingbird! All knew they were so much in love! I wish I had had just a piece of this in my life.

There really is something about Carly's singing that is so special. Much as I've loved listening to other versions of this song, there's a quality that complements and yet also counterpoints his singing. This is the version I'd like to say the final farewell with.

I don’t like hearing the recordings of this song by James and other women he married after Carly. He spoiled it for me when he did that. I always thought it was a special song for him with Carly. The things he has said when her refers to Carly , which is rarely, make me think he never really loved her. I guess he couldn’t when he was addicted, though. An addict only lives his drug of choice. It’s a shame she didn’t get a chance to be with him after he kicked his addiction.It seems unfair to her.

Oh....I'm grieving my husband's passing this morning. He was tired from fighting cancer and dementia. I can't sing the blues anymore.
Now James won't talk to Carly because he asked her to stop talking about their marriage. He didn't mention her in his book. She tried to get him off drugs all through their marriage and when it finally ends his new girlfriend gets him off drugs and he has been clean ever since. Very sad.

81780joe I have older siblings so I grew up with their music. I'm only 42. Born in 1972. But grew up with them and it is terribly sad about the heroin. No girlfriend or wife ever "cures" an addict. For whatever reason, he was able to get clean with the new woman. Not Simon's fault.
If memory serves, that was James and Carole King, not Carly Simon... I may be wrong, but I can't find it with the two of them. Which is too bad...

I feel the same nostalgia, the melancholy feeling that the chance of being loved has slipped away, with no one to blame but yourself. Then again, I think for most people life is too short to find love and let it sink in long enough to do any good. At least we can enjoy the pleasure and pain of the song.
