- Judy Collins welcomes Leonard Cohen to her PBS TV concert performance in this video clip from January 1976. They perform Cohen's song, "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye," which Judy had recorded for her 1967 landmark album, Wildflowers.
This new encoding of the footage has better quality video and includes my new embedded ID tag. I have copied and carried over some of the comments from the previous posting. This footage is taken from a PBS TV program, broadcast over 30 years ago in monaural sound, and captured on a Sony SuperBeta hi-fi deck.
Am I the only one who feels a little sad that TV cannot be like this anymore? Thank goodness for the preserved recordings.
Verdens Salt I've been looking at MTv and VH1 hoping for some sort of retrospective. Sadly they quit playing music ages ago.

I feel the same. Times have changed. Now - you'd have to listen to Rap-Crap.
may Leonard Cohen live on in our hearts for ever. God bless you, Judy Collins.
One of the best duets I have ever heard.Judy's voice is angelic.
Must be one of the best duets of all time.. The artists compliment each other and do not interfere with the other voice.

Such a wonderful gifted man . Leonard Cohen had such a rich baritone beautiful voice like no other. He could draw you into his emotions and feelings like no other . R.I.P
This just breaks my heart. Just having a cathartic cry. So perfect, so gracious, so truly lovely. Goodbye Leonard.
No one else like you....Leonard Cohen! 'A thousand kisses deep' is one of the most beautiful songs ever written! I would love to hear this with you alone!
I've loved Leonard and his music since 1967 when I bought his first album. Now he is with the Lord of Song. Hallelujah! I will miss you more than words can express.
Rest in peace now o wondrous poet Leonard Cohen.
Pure gold from two amazing artists.
40 years ago and still well worth listening to.
This is the most beautiful but exquisitely sad songs I have ever heard.
Judy Collins was/is one of America's treasures!! Can't say enough.
So beautiful and painful. Thank you Leonard for the gift and the pleasure and thank you Judy for the inspiration and for allowing him in.
goodbye genius, cant believe you are gone
I have loved Leonard for almost 50 years he is irreplaceable.
A true artist, he and Bob the greatest modern wordsmiths ever.
Now i can look forward to the x factor karaoke Simon Cowell wannabes, great.
As he said we are all just "passing through"
Both are rare gentle and talented music lovers.
I love you Leonard. The music world was blessed the day you were born. Be a long time before there is another talent like Mr Cohen.
How many people in this decade can create and sing such pretty songs like this one? Not many. Bring back the prettiness we call music.
wonderful beautiful music from two of the best ever....
Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for the memories. ...Judy and Leonard you are much loved here but you know that....
I came to Leonard via my love for Judy. Thank you both. x
Thank you Leonard for your talent that made the world a better place to live and appreciate.
"Thats no way to say goodbye" But we all one day will have to.RIP .Thank you for sharing your life with us
I saw Leonard in 1980 then again in 2009...two wonderful highlights of my life..truly. and seeing him with Judy...well what words would be enough?
".. in a hotel room at Newport." "We sang it all night" If that had been anyone but Cohen those remarks would have sounded so innocent. LOL
It was always comforting to know that, somewhere in the background, you could hear and enjoy voices sweet as those of Judy Collins, and meaningful and awesome of poets like Leonrard Cohen's. Now that hate is among us, dividing us, creating walls instead of roads, it will be very missed the times of your peace and your selfsearching. Cohen: you leave us to deal with hatred, and your words are, now, essental in this earth.
Dark times are upon us. I knew joy and optimism as a young man, and feel sorry for the young now - they will never know what we assumed was our birthright; they can't feel the loss of what they never had...
It is SOOOOO comforting to be able to come here, especially now, and be reassured that I am not alone in my feelings of hopelessness. I have to keep reminding myself that we cannot truly appreciate the light until we are coming out of total darkness. Our nation is entering darkness now, but we will emerge into the light again. Thank you all for posting.
Beautifully said.

love this, no electronics, pitch correction, ect both trying it get in sync with the duet and a little awkward at first. he takes off running, she pulls the reigns a little and waits for him a little and then they get dialed in. like a couple of old friends/lovers getting back together
Leonard, thank you , by the wonderfull music, that you created for us.
R.I.P.
beautiful with Judy's amazing harmonies, really changes the song even more beautiful
I'm not a fan of what she added to this. She should have come in at specific times not through out the entire tune. That's my preference. I'm here to hear Leonard, not her.
I absolutely love the original recording of this song it really is one of my all time favorites. Mixed with Judy`s voice as others have said the harmony in this performance is straight from heaven. Very sorry to hear of your passing Sir, thank you so much for your gorgeous use of words and music, hope you are now with some of those you hold most dear:)
going to see Judy Collins this past weekend at a small venue, she still sings beautifully , lovely and flowing music to listen too, meditative
Leonard Cohen born September 21, 1934.
Thanx for the wonderful songs.
Wonderful man his voice gets better with age ,love you Leonard X
OMG, Legend!!! Amazing talent. Doubt that we will ever see such talent anytime soon!!!!
A wonderful man and creator of beautiful music. I will sorely miss him.
I love you Leonard and you too Judy.
Your music lives forever within my flute.
So good to hear this again ....they make it sound so natural ..
+Jeannie Campbell It's actually not that great. I would say that they had not rehearsed this for even a second.
Which is why it sounds so natural
Too bad you feel this way. Two of the finest songwriters and singers of the late 20th century. You are probably right about how little they rehearsed. It does not come across as a polished performance. But I think this is a positive.
All this quibbling about how imperfect this performance is! It's sincerity and heart felt depth overrides, for me, any deficiencies in harmony.
Thank you sir for writing beautiful songs.
Total class.joy to listen to this. Nobody producing songs like this anymore.
I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time
Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me
It's just the way it changes like the shoreline and the sea
But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie
Your eyes are soft with sorrow
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye... Rest in Peace, Mr.Cohen.

An awesome example of why spontaneous, live music is so REAL. Both of these 2 were truly enormous talents whose sales figures, in the USA, on a national scale, never quite demonstrated. Posting this was a great choice.
My brother has died, I shall miss you Leonard.
I have lost a brother in spirit today, his name was Leonard Cohen. Since a child his music has always inspired me, it somehow reflected the way I felt and the message he sent in them was so very touching and he often made me cry. I loved him like a brother, though I never met him I shall regard him deeply. I will miss you Leonard, I cannot relate how much, I am deeply saddened at your death.
Songs, Menschen und Momente, die einen noch nach Jahrzehnten berühren... wunderschön!
amen.
This is PURE BEAUTY.
damn this is sung so beautiful that I'm crying
Me too. There's so much stuff that we have lost because we weren't paying attention at the time.

music from the heavens...
Very beautiful and poetic music. Just lovely!
chorei ouvindo, sinto uma comoção tão grande com as letras e melodias de Cohen, como farpadas tristes de epifanias no coração.
Lovely...I loved him so much!! Thank you for your contribution to a beautiful man who lived and shared his gift...from the heart.....
Many memories made in your wake. Many thanks.not a single Hallelujah lost.
I love it what a time, the wealth of great music, ideas, musicians and art. It is nostalgic to look back we another renaissance like that again. I listened to one song a stayed to listen to many more. Here to all you who shared this with me and all who may listen in the future

God bless you Mr Leonard Cohen thank you for all the beautiful music RIP .
Hey Leonard! That's no way to say goodbye! RIP :(
Beautiful. I was looking for a song to comfort me these past few days, and I just couldn't. For some reason, I was moved to hear the strings on Famous Blue Raincoat this morning, and it worked. It soothed the beast. I wasn't even aware at that point that you had passed. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your songs.

we hear you sister...

You have to be sad, as am I (I've been crying off and on for the last few days) but your sadness has to be measured against the incredible output of this fellow. He lived and he gave and he lived and he gave and kept coming back to give, and he did so up until his last album, which I haven't even heard yet.
Many many people and groups have done his songs, some better than he could have done them. I doubt that he resented that.
My fear though is that it's going to be a long time, probably longer than the time allotted to me, until somebody again comes to tie poetry and music into a reef knot.
Beautiful. So grateful to have seen you in concert, Leonard, in 2008 in Vancouver. What a wonderful night, and how gracious you were towards your fans and your band members. A real gentleman, and a real genius with words. Your music will live on, long after you are gone, and I am gone. Love you Leonard ! Judy Collins harmonized well with Leonard, in a different way than one usually hears it done, but superb.
No matter the flaws in this performance, I adore it. Two of my favorite artists.
my husband will be happy to hear this version he sent me Liaan Version. i see the original by Cohen alone as well...This is one of the nicest song ever....Sweet and Classic
Magical, just magical....but now it's come to distances. Thanks for posting

"Indeed; and how we shall miss you, Leonard Cohen... Thank you for immortalizing us all, forever, together, on paper!" ~js/November 07, 2016
One of Judy's often sung songs...written by Leonard.
Gorgeous! I love Judy's laugh at the start :)
Anna Weidner
A bit of a rusty start but soon they hit the sweet spot where Judy's harmony vocal meshes with Leonard's plaintive vocal. Magic!
R.I.P Mr. Cohen.
Much loved and missed
Beautiful
What a great duet!
Love both of these great artisits
Absolutely beautiful.
Never heard this version of LC's peerless song before. Thanks for sharing.
Good journey, Sir.
we'll miss you forever...
Lovely.
Be at peace, Leonard.
Thank you LC, for your beautiful lyrics and melodies.
So many years past...yet just like this morning...
💗💗💗 my first Leonard Cohen song 💗💗💗
Juliet Martinez -- 'Suzanne' was my first, this one my second. I miss him so much already... :'(
Anthea Rutherford, Suzanne was my second, but the first one I knew as an LC song. I grew up listening to this one on a Judy Collins record my parents had ☺
So long, Leonard...
Ich bin sehr traurig
Suis triste, chanson magnifique, Léonard repose en paix.
Прекрасный певец, прекрасная пара.
The great songwriters like Dylan write songs that sound like poems.
Cohen ( a published poet) writes poems that are also great songs.
And they are marvelous songs, even without the words. I din't realize that at first, the words being so beautiful and mesmerizing that the music seems to be just there as background. But as a guitarist, I leaned some of his early songs (like this one, "Suzanne" and others) and they stand on their own as works of art.
Another more innocent time
two masters at their craft
Hineni he was ready ..sad..
I loved them both
may he rest in peace...
so long Leonard thanks for letting us ride along. ...
Wow ive never seen this before! thank you so much for the upload. Beautiful
we miss u, sir
R.I.P Leonard and thank you. :-(
Leonard Cohen - Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
Yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
In city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
But now it's come to distances and both of us must try,
Your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time,
Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
It's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
Your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
Yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
In city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
But let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
Your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
Just fantastic historic and magical...
thank you so much for sharing!
Sempre é muito bonito ver um pai cantar ao lado de sua filha, lindo.
Beautiful song. It makes me cry
