It was 1989, my eyes were shut inside a dingy room living in squalor in total poverty , trapped and hopeless .I heard this song , two strangers stranded up the mountain because of a blizzard . I had no idea what this place nor this life was about yet Judy was able to beautifully tell a universal story of loneliness and hope . Now more than 35 years later , I’m still alive . Judy Collins is a great storyteller . This song is a masterpiece

From RPEEK: I heard this song once. I was driving a gas tanker in the frozen waste land of Maine, just a young buck truck driver..... Only once I heard it, but I never forgot it, and for years searched for a copy of it, always keeping it in my mind, and never never found a copy.. Finally I found it here, on UA-cam... Thank you so much.. God, I love this song...... God I love UA-cam..

I live in Ethiopia. I heard her music first in 1991. I was young and restless. Now I am nearly an old man and still enjoy listening her beautiful music. Brings lots and lots of memories. Oh, God. I wish I could turn time back to those days.

One of the most beautiful, poignant songs ever written. Judy Collins .. what a masterpiece! Thank you so much for all the wonderful music you have sung and written over the years. From "Pack Up Your Sorrows" to "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" , your songs have been the soundtrack of my life.

We just saw Judy sing this song live at the Boulder Chataqua Auditorium, in Sept. 09. My husband and I were astounded at her amazing voice, still just as strong as ever. The woman is 70, and she still had those pure high notes! This song made me misty-eyed, it was so lovely. She has a rare gift. Thanks for posting!

My wife and I saw Judy sing this song at Hudson Gardens in Littleton. It was at an outside venue, a beautiful evening under the stars. She was amazing, and the piano player and Judy were working perfectly together. As she got to the part of the song: “And the wind blew…” the wind gusted and blew the light curtains on the edge of the stage. They billowed and blew in the wind. She continued singing, and the piano player continued playing as if nothing had happened, but the audience was awed. It was the most perfect thing ever. A moment in time at a concert we will never forget.

I had no idea this was written in 1989! Judy's voice is like crystal and her gorgeous piano accompaniment whirls like snowfall--such a beautiful combination. I'm learning it for a tribute concert to her, and this video is wonderful.

This is the essence of beauty, of musical perfection, of a gorgeous vocal. Listen to the words and you feel the emotions Judy is conveying here with shimmering clarity. Hearing her sing, "You must know you're too good for him," gives me the chills every time. This is songwriting at its finest. Phenomenal!!

I am ever in the the debt of Judy Collins for this song ... for I I saw, heard, experienced her singing this in a cold, sideways, driving rain-blizzard at the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon in the early 1990's.
These moments are forever tattooed in my heart of hearts for this adventure and what it brought within this humble traveler of life.

Every year, whenever we have our first snowfall of the year, I always play "The Blizzard." It transports me to the "whirl of white powder" world that Judy speaks of in this song. This is my all-time favorite Judy Collins song and is one of the most gorgeous tunes I've ever heard in my life.

    Colorado, Colorado
When the world leaves you shivering
    And the blizzard blows
When the snow flies and the night falls
There's a light in the window and a place called home
At the end of the storm
One night on the mountain I was headed for Estes
When the roads turned to ice and it started to snow
Put on the chains in a whirl of white powder
Half way up to Berthoud near a diner I know
And the light burned inside, shining down through the snowfall
God it was cold and the temperature droppin'
Went in for coffee and shivered as I drank it
Warm in my hands in the steam as it rose
Sitting there at the counter was a dark headed stranger
Me and the owner and him keepin warm
Nodded hello and I said it's a cold one
Looks like there might be a blizzard tonight -
    And "yes", said the owner,"
There's a big storm on the mountain
Good thing we're open, we could be here for hours
There's nothing for miles and it's too late to get to Denver
Better not try for the summit tonight"
    And the snow fell
    And the night passed
And I talked to the strangers
    While the blizzard blew
Me and the stranger, you know I don't talk to strangers
I'm a private sort of person but a blizzard is a blizzard
And somehow I found myself saying you'd left me
Tellin' him everything I wanted to say to you
You know how it is when you can talk to a stranger
Someone your quite sure you'll never see again -
Soon we were laughin', and talkin', and drinkin'
He said "you must know you're too good for him"
    And the snow fell
    And the night passed
And I talked to the stranger
    While the blizzard blew
The stranger said "Love it can cry you a river -
Me, I'm a loner cause I can't take the heartache
And sometimes I'm a fighter when I get too much whiskey -
Here have a little whiskey, pretend you don't give a damn -
My cabin's up here on the side of the mountain
You can go up there and sleep through the blizzard"
I put on my parka, said goodbye to the owner
Followed the stranger through the snow up the mountainside
Woke in the morning to the sun on the snow
My car was buried in six feet of snow drifts
They dug me out, just the owner and the stranger
Sent me on my way when the snowplow had been by
And the roads were all clear and the sun on the mountains
Sparkled like diamonds on the peak to peak highway -
Then I knew that I would get over you, knew you could leave me
    But you'd never break me
    Colorado, Colorado
When the world leaves you shivering
    And the blizzard blows
When the snow flies and the night falls
There's a light in the window and a place called home
At the end of the storm

I heard this song for the very first time when I saw Judy here in Wilmington, DE, my home state, a few years back; she did an AWESOME concert, and I "discovered" this MOST Beautiful and enchanting song. This is my FAVORITE JC song, something about it "speaks" to me, is kind of a nice fantasy to meet up with a "Stranger" somewhere, chat all night while it's snowing loads outside, COZY! and to then "leave" with Him, and then AH what happens "NEXT"... to be continued...

Whether Judy talks or sings, her voice is just marvelous! There's so much passion, she pours her heart out into this song, so soulful and her inner beauty shines. So riveting! I am grateful to have been able to find her here. I dream of one day watching her actual performance. Her songs are a treasure. Sisters of Mercy was closest to my heart in those "difficult times" in the past. Can anybody please help where I can write her? Just to let her know how much her song kept me going back then.:)

This is one of the most beautiful singer-songwriter tunes I've heard in a long time. I heard it days ago on Vin Scelsa's show on WFUV (New York), and was rapt with attention the whole time. I still remember so many details from the lyrics. I had dismissed Judy Collins as "some folk singer from before my time" -- my mistake, she is timeless and excellent.

    • @dmaranan
      @dmaranan 8 років тому +2

+beijoso Indeed she is. This song has always deeply moved me, even though I first heard the song when I was far too young to really understand what it was all about, had never been to North America (let alone Colorado), and never been caught in a blizzard. The music and (what I could understand of) the words just seemed so poignant and hopeful, and THAT i could relate to. I'm so glad that 25 or so years after, I can reconnect with this song much more meaningfully than ever.

I actually have this song on a promo CD single from 1990. No where on the disc is it referenced as "The Blizzard". It is called "The Colorado Song", and the disc has two versions on it. "The Colorado Edit" and the "Album Version". As far as I know, it is actually called "The Colorado Song".

  • @betahifi
    @betahifi  13 років тому

The official title is The Blizzard. That's the title on the album CD, her "Voices" CD and her Christmas CD. When the single was released and distributed for radio play, it was re-named "The Colorado Song" because there was a tie-in with the Colorado Department of Tourism. For the radio track, however, they took a 7 minute song and cut and patched it together to make a shorter, 4 minute song. It was an unsuccessful effort, and the shorter "Colorado Song" never charted.
